Super Bowl Sunday for Non-Football Fans: A Few Alternatives

Yesterday, one of my best friends gleefully reminded me that this weekend was Super Bowl Sunday. Everyone who knows me, knows I don't really care about watching the Superbowl. Am I alone in this? I think not. The whole experience is just not for me. I don't care for the chips, dips, chicken wings, etc. festivities. So if you are one of the few, the proud, the non-football fan fashionistas, you may be looking for some better ways to spend your Sunday. Here are a few suggestions:

If you live in Los Angeles, check out the Clever boutique's " I Don't Eat Buffalo Wings, Drink Budweiser and Watch Football Sale" shopping event. I love the title of this one. The boutique is offering a 25% off coupon to all those who come in tomorrow to shop the sale instead of watching the game. The coupon is attached here for our Recessionista readers. If you're not in LA, check out their website.
Pictured: Clever Boutique's Shopping on Super Bowl Sale and Coupon

In years, past , I have made it a point to visit some of the area's most crowded venues on Super Bowl Sundays. Its always a great time to check out sales at the local mall. Typically, there is lots of parking and the mall is deserted. It's my own private shopping event! Malls across America will be open and deserted. Lot's of good deals abound for those looking for Valentine's gifts. It's a good day to take time to look for a great dress, top or special evening out outfit for the big day. Here are a few special sales for your consideration:

Arden B. has some great deals on Valentine's wear for Recessionistas looking to stay fashionable on a budget. Get Free Shipping on all orders now through 2/14 when you use coupon code VDAY09.

Amazon also has some great specials organized by price for you to check out.

Check out the shopping clubs' sales on our Recessionista's Top Picks on the right side of the blog page.

Another Super Bowl Sunday survival tip is to check out a special movie or "chick flick." Especially a newly opened movie, like Renee Zellweger's "New in Town." You won't have to wait in a line to see it, and you can enjoy a discount on a bargain matinee showing.

Pictured: "New in Town" Movie Poster, courtesy of Lionsgate Films

For more great movies deals, check out Amazon's Indie and International Movie titles sale. There are some great films here for 54% off of their retail prices. There are some great movies offered here like, "There Will Be Blood", "The Queen" and "The Kite Runner."

If you're not snowed in and are brave enough, it's a great day to work out at your local gym or get a spa treatment. My gym is usually sparsely inhabited and there is no waiting for equipment or a swim lane.

And finally, if you're not busy checking out the game, enter our Giveaway for the City Girl Apron. There's still time to win this beautiful and fashionable cooking accessory!

The Recessionista & Shop Suey Partner to Bring You a Taste of Paris!

Pictured: Recessionistas throughout history have enjoyed cooking at home while wearing a fashionable apron. Picture courtesy of The Recessionista Historical Museum

Lately, I have been spending alot more time in my kitchen at home. Why you may ask? Because I am living and cooking Recessionista style. Yes, dear readers, I have curtailed my love of dining out in order to strengthen my budget. I have also found that I really enjoy cooking. It relaxes me. The BFF has also gotten on board with this trend. He has cut back on our dinners out at our favorite French restaurant in Beverly Hills. And really, that is my own fault. After all, he now reads the blog and tells me he is trying to lead a "Recessionista lifestyle. " So, in our current economic climate, we've been been tuning into the Barefoot Contessa more, taking recipes from the Hungry Bear blog and enjoying alot of the great entries from Epicurious. This winter season, I've been making Beef Bourguignon. Its a great way to use up all the red wine in the house that starts to go bad. With this delicious french stew, a cheap and cheerful bottle of vino plus some nice French bread, we can still dine like Parisians without leaving home. And there is nothing like a beautiful and stylish apron to make spending time in the kitchen more enjoyable. Below is an adorable Eiffel Tower print apron designed by City Girl Aprons and sold at the Shop Suey Boutique. After all, today's Recessionista wants to cook in style. To help our readers get in that spirit, we are giving away this gorgeous Apron. Just subscribe to our newsletter by Feb. 5th to be entered into this apron giveaway.

A Modest Proposal: Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Pictured: A 1920s Vintage Valentine Card from Webweaver Vintage Cards site

Happy Sunday Recessionistas! I'm pleased to say that I survived a tough week and have found the courage to be frugal to start thinking about Valentine's Day. Yes, economic slowdown or not, Valentine's Day is coming and it must be celebrated. The thought of it is actually lifting my spirits. Although some of the economic news has been grim this week, the thought of hearts and flowers offers some welcome relief. The day of course is named for that poor Christian martyr Valentine. Of poor Valentine, really nothing is known, except that he died and the lovers' day was named for him. Much later, the day signified the exchange of love notes and love poems. Today, the holiday is completely mass-merchandised and is marked by the sometimes lavish and pricey exchange of gifts. So if you are practicing "recessionista-living", the question is how can you celebrate the day without spending a fortune? I have a few thoughts for our readers and I will be sharing additional tips as the day draws closer.

Make your own Valentine card!
My little sidekick the Recession-Niece-sta is already working on her cards. Every year she buys red construction paper and the lacy paper doilies. She traces her hearts, cuts them out and pastes the white paper lace doile over it and writes a cute message. We all adore the art work and the thought. Here's the link to a site with some great tips on making Victorian Valentines.

Book your restaurant reservation at a Restaurant with a Prix Fix menu
Traditionally, Valentine's Day is one of the busiest days of the year for dining out. Many restaurants are already booked. However, if you are still thinking of going out that day, check out all the "recession-friendly" menus and specials now springing up. I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway this week and spotted the banners for the Brix Wine Bar & Restaurant's new "recession-menu." The menu features 3 courses for $20.00 Sunday to Wednesday from 5:30 pm to 9 pm. The Marmelade Cafe also offers their early bird dinner Monday to Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm for $14.95. Check Google for specials like this in your city. There are many specials like this available and you can find them on Topix, Yelp, Chowhound and other sites that list them.

Enjoy a delicious meal at home
Check for some great recipes on the web or from your favorite cookbook and just enjoy a feast at home.
One of my favorite recipe sites is the Hungry Bear Blog. She has some wonderful recipes there, plus step by step directions and photographs to help your prepare them. I get hungry just looking at this blog!

Shopping deals on special Valentine's Gifts

Valentine's Gifts
for Ladies, check out some special jewelry:
Pictured: The Yummi Glass Murano Glass Heart Rimmed with 24k Gold

I'm a big fan of these beautiful hearts. They dress up any outfit and they are timeless. They retail at Henri Bendel and other fine stores for significantly more than they do from eBay sellers or from the Yummi Glass website. Check both sources for a good deal on these pieces. There is still plenty of time to order for less.

Pictured: HauteLook is featuring heart earrings and pendants from Erica Anenberg on sale Jan 28-29th

You also might want to check out HauteLook's sale on the Erica Anenberg heart jewelry today. Very cute pieces at reasonable prices. Click here to shop the sale.

Dean Harris Jewelry from Target is on sale. This was a really great collection that is now on clearance.
Check out the Pearl Pod and the Silver Wire Citrine Flower earrings.

Valentine's Gifts For Men:

Keep an eye on the Gilt Groupe sales this month. There is some great menswear at nice markdowns.

If you live in NYC, this is a VERY special sample sale on Name Brand watches that we got a hot tip on!
Tourneau is hosting a Private Sample Sale of new and pre-owned Famous Brand Name Watches as well as a selection of designer and estate jewelry all from 50% TO 70% OFF retail prices.
When: Saturday, February 7th through Thursday, February 12th
9:00am to 6:30pm Daily
Where: Soiffer Haskin, 317 West 33rd Street, (Just West of Penn Station between 8th and 9th Avenues), New York, NY

And finally, if you're shopping for your favorite guy, watch sales on DVDs, electronics and movie passes at big box discounters like Cost-Co and Sam's Club.

For a wide selection of Valentine's Gifts on everything from jewelry, lingerie and electronics, check out Amazon.com. If you take the time to plan in advance, you can score some nice deals by pointing and clicking from your home PC. :)

And just for some free fun, check out The History Channel's website on Valentine's Day quotes, sayings, love letters and free cards. Romantic Recessionista that I am, I especially love the story of the Brownings.

Pictured above is the actual letter poet Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett. He wrote, " I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett, -- and this is no off-hand complimentary letter." He touched her heart and won her love with nothing more than his words, some paper, ink and a nominally priced postage stamp. Now that's priceless.

Armed with her woman's intuition and innate sense of style, former Vogue UK accessories editor, Tamara Mellon, sensed the need for feminine but wearable shoes. Thus, she approached Jimmy Choo, a couture shoemaker based in London's East End, to help her realize this vision, and in 1996 the Jimmy Choo label was launched. Noted for being equal parts luxurious and practical, the Jimmy Choo collection met with instant success and garnered a cult following of fashion's elite.

Remaining true to its principles of classic beauty, undeniable elegance and unabashed sexiness, Jimmy Choo expanded in 2001 to include handbags and small leather goods. Each piece is created with the same exquisite craftsmanship Jimmy Choo gave to his custom couture shoes. Led by creative director Sandra Choi, the creative team scours the corners of the globe, finding inspiration in everything from ancient Indian wedding dresses to hand-embroidered Belgium lace.

The resulting pieces prove Ms. Mellon's hunch was correct, and her statement true: "It doesn't matter what you are wearing-if you have good shoes and a good bag, you'll look right."

Stay tuned and Ideeli will notify you when they start accepting entries for this giveaway.

Another Fashion Victory: Jill Biden in Reem Acra

With all the buzz about Michelle Obama's great inaugural looks, alot of us (namely moi) forgot about our brillant second lady, Jill Biden. She looked stunning in a strapless Reem Acra. In live polling on her look on Huff Post, readers are giving her gown a big thumbs up. I also love that she wore boots with her dress at the inaugural parade and lunch.
There's nothing like these beautiful fashions to provide some welcome relief from the recent economic reports. Great style on a special day from Mrs. B at the ball :)

At Last: The Inauguration Ball Comes Alive. Michelle's a Vision in White!

Pictured: Dancing to "At Last", Flawless Style: Michelle Obama in Jason Wu

The waiting is over. The inaugural gown has been revealed, and I love it! I'm watching the Obamas dance while Beyonce's sings the classic "At Last." What a graceful and beautiful moment. The way her long train is twirling as she dances is like an old Ginger Rodgers or Eleanor Powell ballroom dancing scene. Michelle is wearing a white chiffon, one-shoulder gown covered in rosette like appliques and beading by Jason Wu (former Tim Gunn student at Parson's). The waiting is over, the first lady of style has arrived!

Earlier today, she wore an lace overlaid Isabel Toledo coat and sheath dress. I read that 13 seamstresses worked to make that dress through the month of December and that the coat was lined in Pashmina. While the dress was high-end couture, true to her Recessionista roots, Michelle complimented it with green J. Crew gloves. Nice touch. Once again, she made fashion accessible by wearing pieces that all of us can enjoy.

Pictured: Michelle Obama, wearing an Isabel Toledo dress, and President Barack Obama on Inauguration Day. (AP Photo / January 20, 2009)

Rock on Recessionista!

For more information on Michelle's inaugural style check Robin Given's column from The Washington Post. Ms. Given points out that Mrs. Obama has helped both Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo achieve name recognition in a tough economy without spending millions on advertising. What a great gift she gave these two designers.

Newsday.com has a nice write up on Michelle's inaugural outfits and a poll where you can vote on your opinions of her picks. Click here to vote. I already cast my votes. Its a big thumbs up!

Simple Pleasures: A Soothing Bubble Bath and Some Great Music!

Pictured: Bath & Body's Sweet Pea Shower Gel

Lately, I have to admit, I've been feeling a "might glum." Sunday I had to force myself to sit down and pay all my holiday gift bills. Fortunately, due to my fervent bargain hunting, the bills were actually not that bad. Yay me! I wanted to treat myself to something luxurious, but I did not want to spend lots of money to have some comfort. That's when I decided to treat myself to a soothing bubble bath using some life saving "Sweet Pea" bath & shower gel from the Bath & Body Works. I have to say, I forgot what a guilty pleasure a nice bath is. Lately, I'm always rushing around and jumping in and out of the shower. Often times, its the shower at my gym, that I use the most. I always remember when I used to go visit my great Auntie in Massachusetts. She'd always say, "Why don't you just relax, and have a soak? ". I love the expression " a soak. " So my Recessionista tip du jour is to treat yourself to a nice, long soak with some bubbles. Its truly a cheap and cheerful delight. This week is the big semi-annual Bath & Bady Works sale online and in the stores. Most of the prices have been cut at least 50%. The bottle of Sweat Pea bath gel that I enjoyed costs $5.00 USD. Some of my other favorites also on the sale are Lime Verbena, Mango Mandarin, and the Pomegranate. As each day brings stressful economic news, it helps to have these survival tools on hand.

If you are reading from outside the US and don't have a Bath & Body to enjoy, check out Boots products. I'm a big fan of their
Bergamot Shower gel. Bergamot is the super soothing, citrus scent in Earl and Lady Grey teas. Its extremely fragrant and relaxing. Also, check the Body Shop's annual sale. Their products are available globally in the UK, US, Canada Japan, Korea, Australia, France, Switzerland and more. Just check their website.
Pictured :The Body Shop's Annual sale is on now. Little treats at reasonable prices to lift your spirits.

Their ginger body scrub and peach shower gel are special favorites of mine. Right now, if you order online, you'll enjoy free standard delivery on all orders. That's pretty attractive during the cold weather season!

Finally, Perricone MD is having some winter specials you might want to check out if you still have some Xmas $$$.

And there's nothing better than lighting a few candles and turning on some great music while you're relaxing. If you haven't downloaded Edna P. Guinan's Recessionista Mix you need to check it out! Also, Oprah.com is offering a free download of David Foster's America's Song written for the Inauguration. And be sure and check out all the great music from this week's Inaugural concert on YouTube. Its inspiring.
And the price is right. Its free.

The Real-Life Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Suit: New York Teachers in Norma Kamali

Pictured: A Real Sisterhood of the Traveling Pant Suits: The Teachers at Gramercy Arts High School in New York, NY in Norma Kamali

Earlier this week I wrote about Hillary Clinton and her self-described "sisterhood of the traveling pant suits" which she paid homage to at the Democratic convention earlier this year. And today I'm writing about some real-life heros, the teachers at Gramercy Arts High in New York. This is a story near and dear to my heart as my mother taught school for 35 years. She did it because she loved it. And growing up, I always remember her struggle to look stylish on a teacher's salary. She was always looking for a bargain, but it was harder then because it wasn't chic at that time for high-end designers to do lower priced versions of their fashion lines. Today, all that has changed. The pictures below show a variety of beautiful women in all shapes and sizes wearing Norma Kamali's wonderful $35.00 suits. The designer notes, ""My goal is to help women build self esteem, as well as a strong commitment to education." Not to mention a dedication to helping these ladies live the Recessionista lifestyle. Norma Kamali's low-priced suits are easy on the eyes and the pocket book.

Pictured: Affordable Chic: The Teachers at Gramercy Arts High School in New York, NY

If you are interested in checking out these well-priced looks, they are available through Norma Kamali's partnership with Walmart. My "recessionista" advice is order them online if you are interested. NK is not available at all brick and mortar Walmart stores. Furthermore, this recessionista has a hard time parking, standing in line and just generally finding a place to stand at the store chain. The online experience is much more aesthetically pleasing :)

To browse the collection online, check out Norma Kamali's website. The career skirt in the collection is now on clearance at Walmart online for $14.00. The jackets are no longer available online, but I did see them in the Walmart stores on a recent shopping trip. Another good deal from the collection are the handbags which are now on clearance. Not all are available online, but there are still some in the stores. If you are reading from outside the US, many of the NK collection pieces are for sale on eBay from sellers who will post outside of the US.

To learn more about supporting the New York City public schools, visit www.pencil.org. Many business leaders like Norma have built relationships with Pencil to help the NYC schools. To learn more about becoming a Pencil partner, click here. I love the Principal for a Day® concept. I would love to govern and lead a Recessionista Regime! :) Norma Kamali for everyone would be the first order of the day!

Recessionista Regime? Hillary on the Hill

A Brillant Hillary in Turquoise

So before heading to work this am, I had to check out some of the fabulously entertaining Hillary Clinton confirmation hearings. There's nothing more exciting than some very tired senators trying to scramble for something salacious or any appearance of impropriety about Mrs. Clinton. As I drank my morning coffee, I thought , "God help this woman make it through this Spanish inquisition." At this point, I want only one thing, a Recessionista Regime. And I want it now. I want Hillary out there representing us abroad with her "sisterhood of the traveling pant suit" and I want Michelle with her new "Jackie" style in the White House. I think these Recessionistas will do us proud. Hillary may not be a trend setter, but she is wicked smart. And at this point, being wicked smart is just the kind of trend setting I want to see on the White House staff.

Hillary's campaign shirt showing off her "no-frills" pants suit.

Pictured above is her campaign shirt with an image of one of her "traveling pant suits". I mean seriously, you never saw Hillary in a Valentino couture jacket ala Sarah Palin out there on the campaign trail. She's been recessionista-ing it all along. She takes a few basic pant suits and mixes them up with various colorful scarves or sweaters draped over her shoulders. She has a few basic pieces of jewelry that are classic that she trots out. My favorite thing she does is mix up her solid pants with a bright coral or azure jacket. Remember in the debates when John Edward mentioned the color of her jacket? Unbelievable. Although she has been taken to task quite a bit for her style, I don't care. She's extremely competent and hardworking. I say this based on her record as a New York senator. Yet, because she is a woman, her fashion choices are fair game. Enough. I don't recall anyone taking Dick Cheney to task for wearing navy for 8 years with the same tie my brother wore at his Catholic prep school as part of his uniform.

Hillary has a job to do and she is not a full-time fashionista. She is one of a new breed, the few, the proud, the Recessionistas. Go Madame Secretary!

For those of us who still have Christmas money to spend, or who have returned presents they received that they did not really want, there are a few note worthy New Year's sales to let you know about. Although many of us are already on our New Year's budgets, the prices offered by these retailers will hopefully not break your budget resolve. That's why I am passing them along. Golden Globes: Recessionistas on the Red Carpet?

Pretty in Pink: Demi Moore in Dior shows classic style at the Golden Globes, picture from InStyle.com

One of the local TV shows here in Los Angeles this week predicted that we might see Recessionistas at this year's Golden Globes. Indeed, it was suggested that the whole ceremony might be on the "downlow" this year due to the economy. So, I'm here in LA watching the stars walk the red carpet and there is nothing Recessionista-like about the stars' fashion choices. What is shocking is how one entertainment network is trying to present cheap alternatives to what the stars are wearing. There's nothing worse than a guy wearing eye makeup in a gold lame jacket telling women what to wear. Just my opinion. And what's even worse, is tomorrow am, this guy will be on TV critiquing every single choice these poor actresses made. Don't you listen to him ladies!!! Consider the source. There is something just so wrong about a guy wearing a gold lame jacket and spiky hair talking about Coco Chanel's tailoring techniques. I wanted to place a 911 call to Anna Wintour at Vogue. "Anna come quick, there is a heathen here in LA talking about Coco!! " This guy actually thought a Chanel "Camellia" flower was a Magnolia. It was just one fashion atrocity after another.

Cameron Diaz in a Pink Chanel Gown picture from InStyle.com

So as I said, I haven't seen any Recessionista dressing here. What I am seeing is stylish dressing courtesy of Reem Acra, Oscar de LaRenta, Dior, Chanel and J. Mendel. This is Hollywood Recessionista-ing. By that I mean, I don't believe that most of the actors paid for their gowns or jewelry. This is the ultimate in Recessionista living when people give you things. The fabulous Susan Sarandon just laughingly admitted that her jewelry is going back tonight at midnight. What's so cool about watching the Golden Globes (if you're in "Recessionista lock-down" spending mode) is that you get to live vicariously. The show provides all of the fashion, none of the guilt. You just get to watch the fashions and it doesn't cost a penny. Its guiit- less glamour. Check out Angelina Jolie's serenely simple elegance in this beautiful gown without an ounce of "bling."

As Billy Crystal used to say when he did his Fernado imitation, Jessica looked "mah-ve-lous."

If you're looking for discount fashions & accessories from Golden Globe designers, they can be found today on the Gilt Groupe. Their sales today include clothing from Globe designer Oscar De LaRenta (still pricey, but discounted) and jewelry from Amrita Singh. Click here to join Gilt as our guest.

Recessionista in The White House: Michelle Obama Goes to Town

First Lady & Recessionista Mrs. Obama in her under $150.00 USD Black & White Market Dress on "The View" (there was no fighting that day, so she may have been smiling in relief :) )

Like Longfellow Deeds, who in the midst of the Great Depression, went to town (NYC, not Washington) in Capra's classic "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" to bring about change, the Obamas have headed to Washington in the midst of the Recession. Like many Americans, I am hopeful that they will bring about the needed changes and reach out to working Americans just like the hero of Capra's classic film did during the Depression. Tonight on the NBC Nightly News, they featured a report on Mrs. Obama and American fashion. As I've said before, I believe Michelle Obama is a Recessionista. I love how she publicly mentions the prices of some of the clothes she wears. After all, a good bargain is worth shouting about. She revealed on the Tonight Show that she had chosen J. Crew for her TV appearance rather a higher-priced designer. In another interview, she mentioned that she was wearing a $30.00 dress from the Gap. She has shown us that fashion can be affordable, accessible and very stylish. Tonight on the NBC Evening News the reporter posed the question " Will Michelle Obama's style habits have an impact on American designers and consumers?" To me, the answer is a resounding YES! Witness my own mother running out to Target to purchase the Thakoon trench coat. Now, my dear mother has never bought clothing at Target before in her life. But now, she feels like its okay, because they have the same designers that Michelle Obama wears. Also, she has been reading how Mrs. Obama shops at the Gap, H&M and other lower-priced stores and still looks terrific. So now, she's willing to start checking out these new options. And don't think she is alone in this thinking.

So what do I expect to see from the new first Lady? A mix of classic styles and a mix of the discount and the high-end. Like Jackie Kennedy with her three strand pearl necklace (costume jewelry) she will be adding her own classic touches to her everyday dressing. We'll see everything from her classic sheath dress & pearls look, to taking the kids to school outfits to high-end couture at the Inaugural ball. Its exciting to see someone who obviously enjoys style make smart choices.

Taking a look back at other Inaugural gowns, you can see how they really do set the tone of the times. Its interesting to look back in the Smithsonian Archives to see First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's Inaugural gown. Her dress is a rather austere lavender (called Eleanor Blue) buttoned up for the times, long ball gown.

Although she was First Lady for three terms, Mrs. Roosevelt only had one Inaugural Ball Gown because FDR canceled the full-on Inaugural balls for his other two terms. Interesting idea, huh?

Compare Mrs. Roosevelt's gown to Flo Harding's early 1920's "let the good times roll " gown.
This dress has hundreds of tiny beds in elegant patterns sewn into it. I saw it years ago on display at the museum in DC. Truly beautiful.

I couldn't find a picture of the what the the elegant Grace Coolidge wore to her pre-Depression ball. But per a note about the Smithsonian exhibit on CNN.com its noted that she wore " a flapper-like red velvet number." Below is another dress she wore during the Coolidge administration, rocking flapper elegance with a big, loud shout-out of red chiffon. Its interesting that Mrs. Coolidge had such stylish clothes, when her husband was sometimes called "frugal Cal" and publicly chided for his perceived stinginess by the press. His wife's clothing allowance may have been his one indulgence.

Having taken a look back at the past, I look forward to Michelle Obama's fashion journey as First Lady. She's bringing frugal back with a whole new look. I can't wait to see her Inaugural choice. As you can see from the above photos, the First Lady's Inaugural Ball gown does paint a picture of the times and the economy.

In the Midst of the Recession There are Still Some Pearls to Be Found

Enter the Museum Way's Contest to Win this Beautiful Multi-Color Pearl Bracelet

In the midst of this Recession, its good to know there are still a few pearls around. There's nothing like a good strand of pearls to lift your spirits or make you feel timelessly stylish. I'll always remember the photos of Jackie Kennedy in the White House wearing her triple strand pearl necklace. It was a beautiful accessory to all her gorgeous Oleg Cassini suits. Years later, when the Pearls were sold at Christie's, the world learned that the beautiful necklace was costume jewelry. But it didn't matter. Jackie had created the perfect illusion. Her Pearls added just the right touch of class to her image. Today I hope someone else is enjoying them. A good strand of Pearls can be worn forever and with a wide variety of fashions. They are the perfect ageless accessory.

All of this leads me to the topic of today's post. I have discovered that a little gem of a company in Boston called Museum Way Pearls is having a contest to give away the above pictured Multi-Colored Pearl bracelet. Return to Target: More Thakoon & Hayden Harnett

Pictured: Thakoon for Target's Open Back Black Sweater, $26.99

So I had to sneak over to Target this weekend since I am back home in Los Angeles. It was really bothering me that my mom got the last Thakoon canvas coat at the North Carolina Target store . Luckily I was able to snap up the last coat in my size at the local Manhattan Beach store. To my surprise, alot of the collection was gone in the store as well as online. Considering the recent economic gloom & doom reports, I was surprised that consumers are spending so quickly on Thakoon. (Of course some of it is on eBay at inflated prices. Target Addict has noted this on her blog & has some good advice about it). The shibori dresses, many of the cardigans & the cyber floral dress are sold out in the stores and online. I don't think a GO line has sold out this quickly since Jovovich-Hawk. While visiting the store, I came across one little gem that I hadn't seen at the other Target stores & I wanted to let my readers know about it. This is the little black sweater pictured above. Its so elegant and classic looking. It has 3/4 puff sleeves, a rounded neck line, and a little dip in the back that is open, but not too low cut. A great value for $26.99.

Pictured: The Back of Thakoon for Target's Open Back Black Sweater, $26.99

The open area in the back of the sweater is actually not as low cut as it appears in the picture. Its placed higher on the back, and its more of a peek-a-boo opening. It can definitely be worn with a bra and it's elegant, and not too revealing. After picking this up, I cruised over to the handbag section to check out the Hayden Harnett bags. Some of the bags are quite pretty, although I have to admit I did not fall in love with them all as I did with the Anya collection. That's just me. I am an AH groupie.:)

Here's a shot of the selection and the Target ratings from customers.

Some of these are just not the right size (too big) for my taste. However, I do like the Canvas Hobo bag with the colorful blue & gold leaves. Its the right size and a good price. Since I am on my New Year's budget, I did not purchase , but I will keep my eye of this one in case it makes it to the sale racks.

Pictured: My favorite of the Target HH Bags: The Hobo Canvas Bag at $39.99 US.

Surprisingly, the piece of the HH collection that I am most enamored of is the darling umbrella in the same blue & gold print as the Hobo bag. Its very cute and something I actually need as the winter rains will most certainly be plaguing California for the next 60 days at least. Too bad this & the Thakoon coat don't match :) Deep frugal fashion sigh.

The Hayden Harnett for Target Umbrella: $22.99 US

So that's my part-deux review on Target's Thakoon and my opinions on Hayden Harnett.
Shop wisely readers, and if you want the pieces try to get these at Target instead of paying inflated eBay prices. Both collections seem to be very popular with Recessionistas.

Shopping for the Recession-NIECE-sta: Children's Clothes

Pictured: Children's Sales for Mimi & Maggie and NEST for Jan 6th & 7th, 2008 at HauteLook

Over the holiday season, my little 8 year old niece reminded me that she also loves fashion. As we munched on a few homemade cookies together, she looked at me straight faced and said, "Aunt Mary, if you are the Recessionista, then I am the Recession-Niece-sta." How smart is this child? I am still in awe of her little play on words. But then I thought about it, and I had to acknowledge the truth of her statement. She is an extremely fashionable little girl (think Kitt Kittridge type looks) and due to the great shopping skills of her family members, her fashions are always purchased at a reduced price. So how does one shop wisely if they have a Recession-NIECE-sta or a fashionable child in the family?

Here are a few tips for frugal fashion finds for little ones:

1) H&M. I buy alot of the kids clothes there. They are so reasonably priced AND they are age appropriate.

2) eBay: I have purchased many nice Lily Pulitzer dresses for the Recession-Niece-sta there at deep reductions. Also, some sellers only sell children's clothes.

3) Kohl's : Very cute little kids outfits and there is literally always a sale or a coupon to be found to make the prices drop below retail. For my nephew, we always buy alot of Green Dog stuff at Macy's. The prices are unbeatable for boys wear.

4) Shopping Clubs: I've been buying her some great fashions lately at online shopping clubs. Today is the Gilt Groupe's Lucy Sykes sale. We've been waiting for this one. Alot of the little girls dresses are $20.00 to $30.00 US. I've already bought her a New Year's Lucy Sykes dress. She loves to have unique stuff like that to wear to school or out on her social events. HauteLook has also been featuring kids' clothing. Two weeks ago I bought the Recession-Niece-sta an adorable Baby Lu-Lu dress for about $20.00. This week they will feature Mimi & Maggie plus NEST. Click here if you want to join to check these out.

Pictured: Lucy Sykes Girl's fashions on the Gilt Groupe on sale until Jan. 5th

5) And finally, there are some great sample sales to be found for children! Last year, I got her a great children's coat over at sample sale in West Hollywood. It was about $40.00 and a truly great value. She's still wearing it. I check Google every so often to get kids sample sales updates.

I'm off to call the Recession-Niece-sta now to see what she is doing on this fine Saturday. Probably playing with her new Project Runway fashion kits (yes, they make these for kids now!) or her "Spa Factory". It really is a whole new generation :)
