Finance Tips: Because Common Cents Isn't

Don't be shocked dear readers, but when I'm not out shopping, I do try to balance my checkbook and count my pennies. These are mundane tasks, but as necessary for living well as searching out thrift stores for my beloved Chanel. If I could outsource the task, believe me I would. But sadly, I can't afford it. And, let's face it, no one cares about my money as much as me! Last time I went to a financial advisor, they tried to sell me a bunch of "load" mutual funds that would've netted them a nice commission with questionable ROI for me. Instead of taking the sales advice, I bought a book on financial planning, opened a low cost brokerage account and made some thrifty investments in no-load funds. These days, instead of buying books, I'm more inclined to surf the Internet to find savings tips. One good free resource I have discovered are tips from Women & Co. You might want to check out their new worksheet, Set and Achieve Your Financial Goals. Believe me, I am studying it for tips! As Voltaire said, "Common Sense Isn't." Neither is Common Cents right now.

Recently, I asked Women & Co. to share with our readers some simple tips for financial fitness. Following are their recommendations. If only Gov. Schwarzenegger and the California legislature had used these tips, perhaps the state of Cali-fornia would not be on the brink of disaster.

Assess Your Health: Gather all important financial statements and review what you own, your assets, and what you owe, your liabilities. Look carefully at how you’re putting your hard-earned cash to work – what you’re earning, spending and saving. Then set aside some time every few months to file important papers and keep them organized.

Know Your Numbers: Your credit score is a key indicator of your financial health. It’s a primary criteria used by lenders to determine your likelihood of defaulting on a loan and that may impact your ability to get many types of loans, including a mortgage. Request your free annual credit report from each of the 3 major credit bureaus at http://www.annualcreditreport.com/.

Set Your Goals: Once you know where you stand today, set goals. Short-term goals are those you’d like to accomplish within one year (e.g., pay off credit cards); mid-term goals, within 5 years (e.g., make down payment on a new home); and long-term goals, 5 years or more (e.g., save for retirement). Write these down, using the worksheet from Women & Co. to help you clarify and prioritize your financial goals.

Protect Yourself: Maintain appropriate insurance coverage; keep your beneficiary forms for your 401(k), IRA and insurance up-to-date; and put your wishes in writing by executing a will, living will, power of attorney and health care proxy.

Conduct Annual Check-ups: Review your finances at least once a year with your financial advisor. Keep in mind that life transitions such as having a child, getting married or divorced, or moving to another state, often bring with them financial, tax and legal implications.

Remember financial well-being requires on-going maintenance to stay in shape. This summer, I am taking a resolution to dust off my old Jane Fonda fitness tapes and work on balancing my budget (again :) ).

The Cultural Reset in Action: Consumer Spending Has Changed

Pictured: A Vintage Top Value Price Sign, this is the new shopping metric

Good morning readers! I just came across an interesting report on consumer spending in the midst of this recession that I want to share with all of you. Management One, a Specialty Retail Blog just published an interesting article about how consumer buying trends have changed, and for the better. They call it a consumer retrenchment. I call it a collective reset of the "buying button." Recently, Visa reported that consumers are now using debit cards more than credit cards. And the study goes on to note, that frugal is now in "vogue." They even call the new age fashionista the recessionista.

What’s going on is unprecedented, at least in my experience,” said Allen Questrom, former chief executive officer of J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Federated, Barneys New York and Neiman Marcus Inc.

So what's going on dear readers? We all just got a little wiser and started exercising the power of the purse. Congratulations. We are shopping smarter. The new differentiator is value along with the best price. This is something I keep harkening back to when I report on sales here on the blog. Let's face it--the sales are everywhere now. When I started this blog, some major retailers were just beginning to drop prices down to more affordable levels. Now, the sales are more common and rolling out on a regular basis. So, it's not enough for me to report on just the sales. I'm also trying to give you a heads-up on where the best value for price is, sale or no.

In my humble opinion, some fashion retailers that do provide value for price are H&M, Zara, Loehmann's,Norma Kamali for Walmart , good designers on sale and thrift/consignment stores. More of us are going out thrift shopping than ever before. On my last trip to the Canoga Park Salvation Army, I actually saw a limo in the parking lot.

So keep up the good work savvy shoppers. Remember, you don't have to swing at the first pitch, er price tag :)

PS--if you have a Circuit City in your area, check out their recent sales. They have some unprecedented buys on laptops. Over the weekend, some of the California based stores were even selling off iPods for 50% off the retail price.

Pss--The Barney's New York sale has begun. From 6/29 to 7/08/2009.
Barneys New York has taken an extra 25% off already reduced prices on selected clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children, plus stuff for the home. The sale is in store as well as online.

Sunday Savvy: The Best Weekend Sales

Pictured: Charming sign about the value of shoes from Cinderella, Salinas, California.

Good morning my dear readers! Happy Sunday. I'm writing from glorious Salinas, California where I have been visiting family this weekend and enjoying the art of chillification. While roaming the streets of Old Town Salinas, I came across this fabulous sign quoting Cinderella, "One Shoe Can Change Your Life." Here at The Recessionista, we believe that is absolutely true! (In our case, it's one New York Times article.) We just don't want to pay top dollar for that life changing shoe. And, we know our readers don't either. Fortunately, this week kicked off some pretty amazing sales that we all can benefit from. Here's a run down of what's on The Recessionista radar system for good value.

Gilt Groupe: Women's Designer Sale starts online today. Great high-end looks from famous runway designers for less.

Neiman-Marcus (affectionately nicknamed needless mark-up by some) is kicking off their summer sale. Everything is further reduced by 25%. Some items are now as much as 55% off. The sale is for both men & women's items.

Pictured: Lulu Guinness gorgeous leather vanity case, 50% off and perfect for traveling.

Lulu Guinness Online and New York store: Nearly everything in the store ( 394 Bleecker St , 212-367-2120) and online is on sale until stock runs out. Spring/Summer ’09 is 30% off, and both Holiday/Resort ’08 and the vanity collection (which never goes on sale!) are 50% off. These are great deals on fabulous Lulu pieces. Lulu was my first eBay purchase ever, when I was a looking to get one of her bags for a lot less. The is a great way to snap up a classic without battling and bidding with other eBayers.

As predicted, Tracy Feith goes on sale at Target.

And the last great sale alert, Century 21 New York has started their clearance sale. This one is for fashionistas in the New York/New Jersey area, but I know tourists in NYC can also benefit. When I was on the Canadian TV show 16:9, the host mentioned how she loved shopping Century 21 in New York.

I want to close this Sunday Savvy post with a farewell to 80s style icon Farrah Fawcett.

Pictured: Remembering Farrah

I actually saw Farrah a few times in Los Angeles out and about on the town. One time, I spotted her at her beau Ryan O'Neal's gym in Brentwood. To me, she always embodied an effortless kind of California chic. She was one of the first celebrities to go out dressed quite casually and without much fan fare. The opposite of someone like Posh Spice today who steps out ready to be photographed and is ready styled. If you haven't seen her documentary on her battle with cancer, do try to check it out. Her spirit really shines through in the piece, and to the end she showed she was no dumb blond. Rest in peace Farrah.

PS---for another great perspective on Farrah, read an interview with Norma Kamali, the designer that made the red swimsuit Farrah was photographed wearing in the best-selling poster.

Zara's Semi-Annual Sale Starts Today: 50% Off

Good news for those of us looking for good deals. Zara is kicking off its semi-annual sale today, Thursday, June 25th, in all its stores across the US. This is one of only two times per year when the entire store is 50% off . The sale includes suits, dresses, shoes and bags. To check for a Zara location near you, click here.

I'm a big Zara fan. They have always had great Chanel and Pucci inspired pieces for less, for savvy shoppers looking for high fashion on a low budget. Whenever I traveled to Europe, I would make it a point to stop into Zara. When I first visited Zara in France, I was blown away by the selection they had at a low price point. I'll always remember waiting with a line of French women to get into the Zara fitting room area. Outside of H&M, I had never seen anything like it.
Zara has stores all over the world, in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. If you don't know about Zara, you might want to give their styles a look.

Beach Bag Essentials: Something for Everyone

As someone who lives at the beach year round, I feel uniquely qualified to talk about beach bag essentials. When I escape to the local sandy shores for a day of chill-laxing, my bag is usually overflowing with goodies. Typically, I need extra sunglasses, my music via my cool iPod, a cover-up or sarong, and finally stacks of books and magazines. Where ever you are reading from in the world, I am sure you are the same. So in my search for the best prices on some of my favorite beach bag items, I came across some great stuff over at Overstock.com that I want to share with The Recessionista's readers. Overstock ships internationally, so whether you are going to Brighton Beach, Miami Beach, Long Island, St. Tropez, Glen Lake, Michigan, Bondi Beach or other sunny shores, you can take advantage of these deals.

Pictured: A selection of well priced cover-ups and beach essentials from Overstock.com.

One cool thing I spotted immediately is the great selection of cover-ups and sun protective items they have. There are chic wide brimmed hats plus good sunscreens. It's important to be relatively incognito at the beach after all. I'm there to getaway, not to do a "meet & greet." A huge hat and Jackie O shades are the keys to escape for me.

A fashionable beach tote announcing my presence as being "cool" is also essential. I love some of the vintage looking bags that Overstock has. Check out all the colors, styles and materials. Everything from straw to plastic.

Pictured: An assortment of colorful beach totes

Pictured: One of my favorite beach looks. A colorful straw bag. These are $19.99 on Overstock.

But the pièce de résistance, the cherry on the cake of my day at the beach is the entertainment gadgets that I carry with me. This is my final must-have for a day of relaxation. I need my Oasis, Beatles, Paul Weller and Collective Soul on the iPod and at the ready. Without them, it's just not the same. You can't enjoy lounging at the beach without listening to Carnation a few times.

Pictured: My entertainment items for my beach bag include the essential iPod, books and maybe even a good digi- camera.

Most of the Overstock.com items are offered at 60% off department store prices. Their domestic shipping is usually just $2.95. And they now ship to over 35 countries around the world so all recessionistas can enjoy a great bargain.

So, what’s in your beach bag?

Click here to shop as my guest. Beyond the Rack ships worldwide to Canada, Europe, and Asia. Check their site for shipping details and rates.

There are also some goodies in the Beyond the Rack online store for Dad if you are still looking for something on this Father's Day. However, if you haven't shopped for Dad yet, I highly recommend sending him an Amazon gift certificate via email. Your gift will reach him in time and he can get what he wants. :) I don't know about you readers, but I have a very hard time shopping for Dad. The Recessionista Lives Large for Less: Todd English's Beso Hollywood

Pictured: Eva Longoria & Todd English's Beso Restaurant in Hollywood, CA. Value in an unusual place.

If any of you saw my appearance on ABC-TV Los Angeles yesterday, then you know that it has become my raison d'etre (reason for being) to find the best for less. I get alot of notes from blog readers all over the world, asking how can that be done? Well, it basically comes down to doing some research, talking to people in the know and testing out new places. You have to be a bit adventurous and remember to try places that are not necessarily known to be on the frugal living rooster. One of these is Beso Hollywood. Beso is one of the new hot places in town. It's Eva Longoria's restaurant with Chef extraordinaire Todd English. Typically, when you think of the celebrity chef partnering with the desperate housewife, your first thought might be "pricey." I know mine was. But Beso has surprised me.
Pictured: Beso's Chef Todd English and owner Eva Longoria

Last weekend our recessionista posse checked it out and enjoyed some fine fair. Using special Recessionista interrogation techniques, honed with the help of my desire to say within a low budget, I called the Manager of Beso and asked a few questions. After all, local phone calls are cheap. Beso General Manager Paul Pierce graciously answered my questions and helped to uncover a couple of great entertainment specials in the Hollywood area that are worth giving a shout out about as Father's Day approaches. (Remember, this is a technique you can use in any city, in any country. Simply, call the restaurant manager, and let him be your guide to the best values. The manager wants your business, so he or she will be happy to talk to you and tell you what the specials are.)

First up, let's start with a discussion of the Beso Menu. Prices range from the cheap and cheerful to the more pricey. Obviously, the dinners are twice as much as the starters, and this is true about any restaurant.

Pictured: The reasonable price of appetizers and salads at Beso.

However, what we found so gratifying and recessionista-friendly about the menu, were how delicious and filling the starters were. The flatbreads, guacomole, Taqueria, and salads can easily make a meal with prices ranging from under $10.00 to $14.00. These small plates are delicious and for a reasonable price, you get to enjoy mixing with celebrities while dining on affordable food in a beautiful atmosphere. I'm not a big celebrity "gawker", but every now and then I do like the feeling of rubbing shoulders with the stars without paying the full price :)

Another way to enjoy Beso for less is to go on Monday night. Every Monday night, you can enjoy half price bottles of wine & champagne (if the bottle is priced at over $60) along with the purchase of food. If you are a wine lover, this is a great way to sample some good wines from around the world for less. I would recommend ordering a nice bottle of Pinot Noir along with the "Margarita" flatbread.

The last cool thing recessionistas need to know about Beso, is it's located right next store to the Pantages Theatre. This provides a great opportunity for entertainment + great food. Did you know that the Pantages does a lottery for $25.00 for front row tickets 2 1/2 hours prior to each show? So for the 8 pm show, the lottery will be at 5:30pm. Here's the deal. Each day, 2 hours prior to show time, people who present themselves at the Pantages box office have their names placed in a lottery drum and then thirty minutes later, names are drawn for a limited number of front orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. ID is required to purchase the tickets. Check the Pantages website for additional details. If you get their early to enter the lottery and you win, you will have 2 hours of time to kill before the show starts. What to do? Swing over to Beso for some cheap and cheerful appetizers and a little people watching. If you haven't already made plans for Father's Day, dinner and a show on the cheap would be a great way to treat Dad on his special day.

Remember, you can check for theatre deals in your city by using website Theatermania, or just checking your local theatre's website. Usually, all specials are listed on their website.

PS: To enjoy some cheap & cheerful recipes from Beso, click here. Todd and Eva recently featured several great recipes that can be made for under $10.00 in People Magazine. This way you can enjoy a taste of Beso from where ever you are.

Welcome KABC LA TV Viewers!

Pictured: The Recessionista blogger at home with all her shopping bargains. Some vintage, some thrift or "pre-owned", some new, all below retail.

If you're visiting here for the first time welcome to my blog. If you watched ABC-TV 7 today, you saw me do a scavenger hunt of thrift stores, the Salvation Army and retail store Walmart. The hunt was on for high fashion at a low price in the Los Angeles area. Read on for more of the deals I have found, plus invitations to designer shopping clubs on the right navigation bar under, The Recessionista's Top Picks.

I'd like to thank the Salvation Army Canoga Park , Walmart Canoga Park and the National Jewish Women's Thrift Stores for letting me loose in their stores to go exploring for bargains! The hunt for the deals is never ending. I'd also like to thank some other stores I visit and shop at in Los Angeles that we didn't get to bring cameras to, but which you may wish to check out. They are: HauteSeconds in Santa Monica, DecadesTwo in West Hollywood, Kohl's Torrance, H&M and Loehmann's. Thanks for reading & good shopping!

PS--Special thanks to Larissa & Lisa at KABC-TV for letting me "shop smart" on camera.

Groupon: A New Way to Find Discounts

Hey Readers, have any of you heard of this new way of finding discounts, called Groupon? I recently came across it on Facebook as an ad. I was intrigued and signed up to receive deals in the Los Angeles area. Here's what this cool new idea is all about. Groupon offers a different deal every day, ranging from gift certificates at restaurants (50-60% off is typical) to huge discounts on services ranging from mani-pedis to spa treatments to sports and cultural events (Cubs tickets in Chicago.) Groupon arranges these discounts with the offering business. Everyday, a number of special offers known as Groupons (coupons for groups) are sold via the website. When Groupon sells their targeted amount, the campaign succeeds and everyone who signs up for the deal gets it. Below is an example of how it works.

Pictured: A Sample Groupon, a Massage at a NY Spa is offered for $75.00 (50% off) if 60 Groupons are sold by June 21.

To date Groupon is up and running, in Washington, D.C., San Francisco , Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York. So far, over 130,000 people subscribe to their daily newsletters. If you have tried Groupon, drop The Recessionista a note and let us know how you like it. For best results, I advise checking the offer on Groupon with YELP! to see what those who tried the restaurant or spa think of it before you buy it on Groupon. If it's not highly rated by YELP! users, then it's no bargain, no matter what the price is.

I use YELP religiously for restaurants and I swear by it. Recently, I followed a great YELP review to the Blue Dolphin Italian restaurant in Katonah, NY. It was cheep and cheerful, and some of the best Italian ever. This week, I'll be trying the Groupon + the YELP combo to see how I do. It's worth a try to save a few pennies. Especially with the weekend coming. We all want to go out, we just don't want to pay full price. Groupon may be an option for helping to find some good deals!

JIMMY CHOO BRINGS GLAMOUR TO H&M THIS AUTUMN

Pictured: Jimmy Choo for H & M Sneak Peak

Great news for those of us with Champagne tests on a beer budget. High-end shoe designer Jimmy Choo is coming to H&M. Jimmy Choo is the latest designer to realize that their designs should be more accessible via a lower priced line.

The collection will be available from November 14 in around 200 stores across the world. It is the first time that H&M is collaborating with an accessories brand, and to celebrate Jimmy Choo will extend its design vision for this collection to women’s clothing to complement the accessories. And good news guys, this collaboration includes a men’s collection of shoes, bags and accessories.

“We are privileged to be among the fashion greats who have been affiliated with H&M so far, and to be designing a collection appealing to fashion savvy, street smart women, and to be including some great pieces for men, too. Jimmy Choo will bring to H&M a sophisticated, fashion forward, accessible and glamorous collection – the perfect party pieces to buy now and then wear out that night!," notes Tamara Mellon, Founder and President, Jimmy Choo.

The famous Jimmy Choo shoes will be at the heart of the exclusive collection for H&M, but there’s more. Jimmy Choo has also become well known for its bags, and for H&M there will be a whole range of accessories to complete the look.

The only bad news, the lines at H&M will surely be long. I need to start planning for Nov. 14th!

Summer Scents for Less

In addition to the perfect swimsuit, beach totes and vacation spots, I have been getting a fair amount of reader mail about perfume. Alot of readers are wondering about where they can buy their favorite scents for less. As we all know, designer perfumes can be pricey. I can only tell you what I have found for discounts for the scents that I love. I am very picky about my perfumes, and I like a light touch. I don't want anything overpowering that will clear rooms or announce my prescence long before I actually make an appearance. Haven't we all suffered at one time or another from smelling a perfume that just "reeks", yet the wearer loves to spray it all over themselves several times a day? Hopefully, this post will give you some cheap and cheerful ideas for summer scents and help you to dissaude some of your perfuma-holic friends from making bad choices. Remember to try the tester before you buy. And check the prices on those testers. I like to try the scents at upscale shops and then buy them at better prices. Sneaky perhaps, but it does help, my budget. So here are my favorites:

Feragamo's Tuscan Soul

This is a VERY light, citrus scent. Perfect for the summer. The perfume has notes of bergamot and petit grain lemon. If you can't afford to take an Italian vacation this year, conjure up the next best thing with this sunny scent reminiscent of Tuscany. It can be bought for 21% less than it is sold for at Fergamo at this Perfume website (or on eBay!). This week Feragomo is having a sale, so you might check to see if they have discounted this one yet. It's quite a refreshing summer surprise.

Petite Cherie Annick Goutal

This light scent smells like PEARS. I fell in love with it at Nordie's. It's so very unique, and never overpowering. It's another scent that can be worn all day in the heat of summer to keep you cool. However, I don't buy this for the retail price of $80.00. I've been buying it on eBay for $49.99. It also sells on Keenzo.com for $38.00. That's over 50% off.

Jo Malone

My final favorite is Jo Malone London. It retails for about $90.00 at high-end stores like Saks. It's not offered for much less on their website, but if you purchase from Jo Malone.com you receive complimentary samples of 2 fragrances plus free shipping. My favorites are the Orange Blossom and the Lime Basil. Everyone now and then, I treat myself to these. I shop for them on eBay, but haven't had alot of success there.

What is your favorite summer scent? And where do you look for it for less? Let The Recessionista know by posting a comment.

l really can't remember the last time I turned off the PC and the Blackberry to take a real vacation where I tried to use a beach lounge chair and just do nothing. Can you? The Recessionista's Take on Summer Swimsuit Styles

Summer is officially here and swimsuit season is in full bloom. Recently one of The Recessionista's readers wrote to me with some interesting questions about summer swimsuits and how the recession many affect their design and manufacture. Following is my take on the how the current economy will influence the swim suit styles for women.

Q. Will women be buying 'safer' swimwear in a soft economy since they will likely be wearing it closer to home, at the backyard pool or swim club, instead of on a vacation at a resort?

A. My take on this is that we are seeing a return to the conservative one piece suit. We are going from roaring 20s" let the good times roll wear" to more frugal, less flashy wear in general. Swimwear will follow this overall trend. I predict lots of Ann Cole one piece suits from TJ MAXX and Marshalls and Gap swimwear (on sale for $16.00-$29.00 bucks on Gap.com). Check out the swimwear in the new Matthew Williamson H&M collection to see more examples of this. He has great one-piece suits, with cut-outs for detail.

Pictured: Check website Smart Bargains for great swimsuit discounts

For a great looking vintage looking suit, check out Los Angeles' very own Esther Williams' suits. She has recreated the great vintage styles from the 40's and 50's for alot less. And who knows better about a great suit, than the former queen of the MGM swim pictures? I know my fellow blogger, NYC Recessionista also has talked about how great the Esther suits are.

Pictured: Back to the Future: Esther Williams' Classic Sheath Swimsuit on sale at her website for $79.00.

Pictured: Esther Williams' Suit in Fuchsia. This style comes in a variety of colors and floral prints.

Click here to see an example of one from Gap I just bought. Those who know me, know my favorite exercise is Aqua aerobics. So, I stock up on suits at good prices as I go through them quickly.

Q. Do you foresee the suits being made with more or less fabric?
A. I think lower in the back, but higher in the front (like the Gap swimsuits). About the same amount of fabric, but covering the body in a different way--less low cut, breast baring, maybe not cut as high on the hip either like the Gap suit.

Q. Do you forsee fewer designer suits at affordable prices?
A. No, the designers are available for less, so you can still have them. I just bought a $112.00 retail Miracle suit for $29.99 at Marshalls. And by the way, I love my Miracle suit. It works and is very slimming. I also saw designer suits at Loehmann's and Macy's for deep discounts. Designer suits at discounters will sell briskly. When we are lucky enough to find a good one, at the right price, we are not going to let go of it!

The high-end Norma Kamali $300.00 suit will continue to be attractive as an investment piece. When I meet Norma at her store in New York, she told me that she had research that showed her high-end suit can last for 20 years. However, if you are just looking for a stylish suit with the Norma Kamali design, remember her swim suits are coming to Walmart soon (this month to be exact) for $15.00 to $20.00 US. Check out Norma's new eBay store for her high-end swimsuits at discounted prices. I love the idea of buying direct from the designer at a discount.

Check out her one piece Neon-poly jersey swimsuit selling for a starting price of $150.00 at her eBay store!

Clearly, whether you're on a stay-cation, a fur-cation (enforced furlough) or at a swanky resort on a traditional vacation, there are some great swimsuits out there for good prices. We've come along way baby. Check out a swimsuit from the 1920s to see what I mean.

David Beckham in Armani Briefs Unveiled at Selfridges Today!

Pictured: LA Galaxy Star David Beckham signs Autographs at Selfridges.

I was so curious about how the appearance of soccer superstar David Beckham went at Selfrigdes earlier today, that the Armani PR folks sent me some cool video. Here is it. They gave him a very 1920's vintage look with the slicked back hair in the photos. I'm thinking F. Scott Fitzgerald's Gatsby when I looked at the pose and hair. What do you think? Underwear never looked so good. Take a look at the video below. I love it when the commentator ask Becks if he dieted for the photos, and he is all, like no, not really. He's on the soccer diet out here in LA people.

My favorite thing about the whole event is that Beckham meet some of his younger fans and was kind and gracious to them. And they can't even fit into his underwear yet!

Pictured: Beckham meets a young fan, not yet a wearer of Armani underwear. This is called "seeding the market" to develop brand preference later. :)

This isn't earth shattering fashion news, or a great bargain, but it sure is entertaining. After all, The Recessionista can not live by coupons alone! I can only dream about my next shopping excursion in the UK at this point. May it come soon, and include my own trip to Selfridges. I need to start looking for coupons now :)

The Recessionista's Wallet Rejoices! June 11th sales and coupons!

Pictured: BCBGMAXAZRIA Friends & Family Event

Did any of you realize that June 11th was such a summer sale bonanza? I'm sitting here trying to figure out what is going on with all these various sales starting on Thursday June 11th. First I found out Becks was going to be over at Selfridges shilling Armani undies, and now the savings just keep coming. Go figure. If any of you readers go to Selfridges and see Becks, please write in! OOoOO is probably too busy over at some Louis Vuitton auction buying needful things to give us an update :) Just kidding, love to OOoOO , he is a particular favorite of mine.
As luck would have it BCBG is kicking of their friends and family sale tomorrow. I'm giving you a scope here, as official word will hit the streets tomorrow. If Victoria B is not too busy over at the underwear event in the UK, she might even stop in for BCBG goodies. Here are the details:

Dad, I still need to get your Father's day gift, but I will. I just have to uncover the best savings first :) Give me time. I'm on it.

And finally, I had to reorganize the office over here at The Recessionista HQ. It was one of the worst days of my entire life! Worse than going to my high school prom, so that gives you the flavor of it. Papers everywhere. Stacks of shopping receipts. Gift items. In short, massive chaos. And the tax stuff was still lying on top of the desk. Fortunately, I was able to pull myself back from the edge of disaster with some folio filing stuff from Office Max. So now, I'm on the OfficeMax mailing list, and low and behold, they are having a sale too. A sale with, a fabuless coupon for extra savings. This is a good one if you need major supplies, like an office chair etc. That's if you're spending like 60 hrs a week chained to a PC like moi :)

Pictured: OfficeMax sale coupon

Here are the details on the OfficeMax sale. From June 14 to June 20, OfficeMax will be hosting a huge furniture event where customers will receive 40% OFF of office furniture in-stores nationwide. Shopping for a Good Cause: Those that Sell and Give Back

Pictured: The SoHo Stroll Shopping event is coming this week in New York City. Proceeds will benefit the homeless.

Today's post is all about how you can remain fashionable by shopping for a good cause. Even in these tough economic times, there are some retailers who are giving a percentage of their profits to worthy causes. I want to give each of them a shout out and encourage you to check them out. These merchants are going onto The Recessionista's Honor Roll for Giving Back.

First up, The SoHo Stroll, June 11 to June 13 in New York City
Starting this Thursday, The Association for Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (A.C.E.) and The SoHo Partnership will sponsor a three-day shopping event to benefit New York City’s homeless men and women. The SoHo Stroll will take place from Thursday June 11 to Saturday, June 13 at venues throughout SoHo. The event will give shoppers special access to discounts and promotions offered by participating restaurants and retailers. The list of contributing designers is truly amazing. I'm lusting after the goods just reading the listing of participants. And the best part? All proceeds will benefit the SoHo Partnership. Visit the SoHo Stroll’s website for the up-to date list of promotions from neighborhood businesses. To participate, all you need to do is purchase a $20.00 admission bracelet at one of the Stroll's booths or select locations. I wish I could attend virtually.

Pictured: Shop Distinction owner, Berta Lippert. She gives me a new reason to want to shop: donating to worthy causes.

If you haven't heard of Shop Distinction, you will want to check it out. There is even a virtual tour guide on the site to help you shop. So what's so special about this site? Berta Lippert's Shop Distinction is an online Handbag & Accessories boutique offering celebrity fashion trends and items for sale at great prices. But that is not the best part. The best part is that while you get a great bargain and look fashionable, part of your purchase price is donated to helping fight breast and lung cancer. I am so impressed by the owner of this company. Ms. Lippert has a unique business approach which combines her passion for fashion with a sincere desire to help others.

The Shop Distinction website specializes in runway-inspired handbags under $100. The bags and accessories have been featured on the popular Gossip Girl TV show. And despite the slow economy, part of the proceeds of EVERY sale, EVERY day go back to organizations seeking cures for breast cancer and lung disease. When asked why she is giving back, Ms. Lippert explains. "In the spring of 2004, my mother and best friend were both diagnosed with breast cancer and had their operations within hours of one another," said Lippert. "So I wanted to create a website that reflects two of my passions; great clothes and breast cancer awareness." I love it, this is socially and fiscally responsible shopping at it's finest. And how cute is this handbag? Seriously, it reminds me of Isabella Fiore's style. But it's only $59.95!!

Pictured: Shop Distinction Floral Summer Bag

Two other retailers I want to recognize are:

Dermelect Cosmeceuticals for donating money from their skin care products to the Melanoma Research Foundation. Their products were formulated jointly by medical professionals & licensed estheticians to help women battle the demon, of, you guessed it, a*g*i*n*g. With more of us "spa-ing at home" during the recession, their products are a great option.

Pictured: Dermelect Spa at Home Kit

I also like that when you order from them you get free samples in the box and free shipping on orders over $50.00. These are the type of perks we like!

And finally, I want to recognize Buffalo Exchange for donating money to environmental causes. Buffalo Exchange has been a secret weapon of college kids for years. The store is founded on the principle of recycling fashion. The Exchange was one of the first stores that bought, sold, traded, and took clothing items and accessories on consignment. Today it's a million dollar business bringing affordable fashion to the masses for over 25 years.

Pictured: Buffalo Exchange, Guilt-Free Fashion and a Bon Prix!

These are just a few great options for socially and fiscally responsible shopping. I'll be posting more in coming posts.

This Week's Fashion Round Up: Some Events to Help with Father's Day Shopping

Pictured: David Beckham and Giorgio Armani at the fall/winter 2009/10 Emporio Armani Men's shows.

Word up bargain shoppers! Some important events are happening this week around the globe to help make your shopping for Father's Day a little bit easier and well informed.

First up, if you live in London, you are in for a serious treat. Soccer Superstar David Beckham, formerly of Manchester United and now with the LA Galaxy team, will be making a very personal appearance on June 11th at Selfridges Oxford Street in London to preview the new Emporio Armani Underwear Fall/Winter 2009-10 campaign. Armani is seriously one of the best designers in the world, and I applaud him for doing the lower priced Armani Exchange line (which is having some great sales), but the draw here is to see the gorgeous Beckham in person. I will be sending fellow blogger OOoOO a telegram to let him know. Check with Selfridges ( I love their shopping, including food & wine) for details. The first 270 customers to purchase three pairs of Emporio Armani men's underwear from Friday 5 June will meet David Beckham in-store at Selfridges Oxford Street on Thursday 11 June. Will this set off an underwear buying frenzy?

Pictured: Clairborne by John Bartlett easy summer living look

In the US, new Clairborne for men designer John Bartlett will be teaming up with Project Runway's Tim Gunn for a menswear workshop on June 11th in Chicago, IL. The event is entitled, "
Building a Wardrobe Workshop" and will show how you can mix and match pieces from the new Clairborne collection to get the most value for your dollar. To get event details, check out the designer's Facebook page and RSVP. I wish I was going, I'd love to have the opportunity to get style tips from these two, free of charge. Tim is great on Project Runway. He is always encouraging and supportive. John Bartlett is lucky to have Tim out there with him. Hopefully, there will be more of these events around the US. If so, I will post the details here for my readers! There will also be Pop-up shops with "Duds for Dad" in NYC for Clairborne for men .

Ideeli will be offering Samsonite Black Label luggage for sale, starting Tuesday, June 9th. To check it out, click here. They will also be giving away a Longchamp bag this week, so watch for that. Here's a little preview:

Pictured: Coming attractions Ideeli's Longchamp Bag Giveaway will start soon. Stay tuned.

For Woman, there are some great sales going on this week. At Gilt Groupe
Moschino Cheap and Chic jewelry is on sale.

H&M’s Summer Sale starts June 10 at H&M around the globe!
Stock up on trendy pieces at H&M’s summer sale starting June 10th. Select summer styles starts as low as $5.00.
$5.00 is soooo Recessionista friendly.

In Los Angeles, a NEW H & M is opening on June 11th , at noon PST, at the Westside Pavilions Mall. This location will carry clothes for women, men and teens. The first 100 shoppers in line at the grand opening will receive a free T-shirt and an H&M Access to Fashion Pass with a random value of $10, $25, $50, $75 or $100.

Those are all the sales that are fit to print....for now. Watch this space!

The Recessionista's Op-Ed: Yes, We're Still Shopping. It's called Retail Therapy.

Recently, a study in the UK confirmed something that I have known in my heart for some time. That is, when under stress, depressed on even broke, women will still shop. As Jane Austen, might have said that women will continue to shop irregardless of economic circumstances is a "truth universally acknowledged." Recessions and Depressions will come and go, but the shopping will go on. Psychology professor Karen Pine, from the University of Hertfordshire has been doing a number of studies about how various factors (including the time of the month) influence women's spending habits. I have been reading her studies and I must admit, I find them extremely interesting and affirming. Why affirming you say? Well, because I myself am still spending. I know myself. If I have a bad day I am likely to go shopping. Even if it's just for sport (i.e. window shopping, not actual buying.) It's retail therapy, and sometimes it takes my mind off things. With my current shopping, I am just trying to do it as wisely as possible. That's why I started this blog.

Here are some of the findings from Dr. Pine's studies on women and spending:

  • 79% of women say that going on a spending spree cheers them up. This indicates that some women use shopping as an emotion regulator to numb themselves to negative feelings or dissatisfaction with life.
  • Research also revealed that an intense emotional state, high or low, is often responsible for sending women to the stores.
  • Hormonal fluctuations, psychologists say, may lead to women spending more than they can afford, buying unwanted goods or feeling out of control with money.

Dr. Pine likens the use of shopping to regulate emotions to the use of drugs or alcohol. "If shopping is an emotional habit for women they may feel the need to keep spending despite the economic downturn," she said. "Or, perhaps worse still, if they can’t spend we might see an increase in mental health problems such as anxiety and depression."

My take on this is that people still need to treat themselves to some rewards. I've been calling these The Recessionista's rewards. This is why I am still tracking the sales, going to Loehmann's, checking out the shopping clubs and getting excited that Norma Kamali is now at Walmart and I can buy a great dress for $20.00. I've also been seeking out contests I can enter to get free stuff. Some of my friends are amazed by my dedication to the task. But ladies, and men too, we need our treats, our rewards. Something to give us a lift. Like some of the people in Dr. Pine's study, I believe "pretty things" will ultimately uplift me. I think Celia Birtwell was the one who said that if given the choice, she would choose the "pretty." Especially, if those pretty things don't break my budget.

Pictured: Depression Wear: Hoisery in the Midst of the Great Depression

Did you know that in the great depression sales of women's stockings soared? And in this recession, that trend continues. Overall hosiery sales rose 2.3% this year, with Spanx seeing a 77% increase in sales compared to last year. Leonard Lauder, the chairman of Estée Lauder, has also observed that when the economy is in the tank, sales of lipstick are up. We still want that $10.00 tube of lipstick or gloss to make us feel better.

This is where planning becomes the key. I think the real problem here is impulse shopping and overspending when you feel down. All I can say, is take a minute and think about that price tag. And if you can't resist, and you get it home, only to discover it's not all that, then take it back!! Yes, you can exercise your power of the purse by doing returns.

And beyond shopping, remember to take a periodic inventory of your finances and your budget. Like any other relationship in life, in order for it to be a success, a good relationship with money requires constant communication. I'm saying this as I prepare to communicate with my bills, my checking account and my investments (lately I hate to look but I have to do it.) If you're looking a resource for some free tips on investing and managing your money, check out Citi's Woman & Co. webpage. They also have some great newsletters and fact sheets there for your reference.

Yes, we have our emotional shopping habits, but we don't have to be ruled by them. Not in The Recessionista's Regime!

PS--I stopped in the H&M store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles today and they still have almost all of the second Matthew William collection in the store. Apparently this store received two shipments. I treated myself to the yellow silk print tunic that I have been coveting since I saw Margareta wearing it at the launch party. And yes, I got it at the H&M price not an inflated auction resale price. Yay me!

Sunday Savvy: Essential Summer Style

Pictured: Style expert Lloyd Boston of Fine Living Network, "Closet Cases" helps a viewer find the right fit. We like that in a "style guru."

Happy weekend readers! Summer is officially here and alot of you have written in to ask the eternal question, "What are some essential summer wardrobe staples?" Fortunately, we got some help answering this one from Lloyd Boston, Jones New York Style Guru and star of Fine Living Network’s ‘Closet Cases’. He has put together his list of 5 essential summer pieces. His picks are stylish, practical and supplemented by my finds that are easy on the wallet.
Personally, I always find it of interest when a man tells ladies about essential style must haves. But at this point in life, I've heard enough worthwhile tips from Clinton Kelly (TLC) and Carson Kressely on their respective shows not to ignore these types of things. (Clinton and Carson, if you're reading, please let us hear from you! ) Because of his affiliation with JNY, Lloyd offers his tips with accompanying pieces from the Jones of New York line (now on sale at your local Macy's.) Recessionistas, if you look for Jones at Macy's, look for your in store savings pass in the local paper!

Remember, Lloyd's tips are applicable to other lines as well. Use your own savvy and pocket book as a guideline on how to best implement. So without further adieu, here are his top five:

Numero Uno- “White Denim is a MUST for Summer, it's as close to universal as you can get, next to your natural bare legs.” Notes Lloyd, "Anyone can wear white if worn appropriately. To make sure there is no see-through, choose a denim like this one!"

Pictured: JNY White Pants now on sale at Nordstrom's for 33% off, reduced to $58.00 from $89.00.

Two- “Stylist trick- Nude underpinnings will not show through even your lightest weight whites this summer so be sure to have them on standby by for any occasion!” This is an important one, because even white, yes white shows through on white. Be sure to get yourself a good nude bra, and nude undergarments for summer wear. As Tim Gunn has show numerous times on his Bravo show, foundations can make a big difference. (Tim, anything else we need to know? -:)

Three- “Summer is all about bold, intense color- the hottest and easiest way to start sporting this look at your next summer fete with one item and pair with white to cool it down.” I agree with this one whole heartily. Look at the gorgeous bright colors we just saw from Matthew Williamson at H&M. I love a great turquoise or bright pink top in the summer, with a pair of white jeans or capris. Here are some good options for tops from the JNY line that I like.

Pictured: Jones New York Blue Twist Top from Nordstrom's

Pictured: The JNY classroom T-shirt with the bright green apples & shopping bags. Only $20.00 at Macy's and 100% of the profits will be donated to Jones New York In The Classroom, a non-profit organization supporting teachers and education.

Pictured: JNY Printed Tank in Plus and Regular sizes, on sale at Belks.com for only $17.98, reduced from $75.00.

Pictured: A bit of flash, the JNY Hydrangea Boatneck top.

Four- “Wraps are a year round essential. They travel perfectly for those unpredictable airplane temperatures and then easily transition into an elegant evening wrap, when the sun goes down during a wonderful dinner by the ocean.” Jones New York offers a great year round wrap (see below) in 11 beautiful colors. A great way to dress up a garment you've had for years, or simply add a touch of color.

Pictured: A great finishing touch for less, the JNY wrap comes in multiple colors for only $34.00.

Five: Get some cool sunglasses!!! You can buy several pairs for cheap at your favorite retailer or discounter. I call it the "made in the shade" look. In California, I stock up on sunglasses year round to give various pieces different looks. I have everything from my Gucci (bought at auction for a discount) Jackie O, "do not disturb" glasses to my vintage Ray-Bans. For me, the sunglasses are like mirrors of my soul. And, did I add, they make a stunning head band at times. I am rather found of wearing them on top of my head. I wear them perched there, almost as much as I wear them to shield my eyes. In Lloyd's opinion, “Whether you are heading for a day at the beach or just to a brunch with your girlfriends, a simple, yet elegant pair of sunglasses add the finishing touch to any look this summer!” True dat.

Check out one of my fashion favorites, Grace Kelly in her white rimmed glasses. This look is timeless. You would never guess its 30+ years old. Love the turban for hiding beach or bed head, with the cool shades.

Pictured: Traditional wear, Grace Kelly wearing Sunglasses at the beach

Pictured: Completely anonymous sunglass wear: Marlene Dietrich wearing her shades, indoors at the Paramount Commissary.

Pictured: Susan Sarandon at the Oscars in Sunglasses: Don't be afraid to wear them at night, if the look is right.

Pictured: Sunglasses as shopping accessory

As you can see, Sunglasses come in many, shapes, styles and of course prices. You'll find them everywhere from eBay, Designer outlets, H&M and of course Jones New York. Shop well and wisely.

OMG! Tracey Ullman to host CFDA, Look out Designers!

Pictured: Tracey takes off as Muccia Prada

Fans of Tracey Ullman know she has spoofed designers Donna Karan and Prada. So how delicious is it that she is going to host the awards for Council of Fashion Designers of America awards on June 15? As soon as I read this, I started laughing. I love it! I only hope the show will be televised. I also understand from reading Huff Post that my favorite recessionista, Michelle Obama will be honored at this year's awards. It's too good. I feel the winds of change blowing through CFDA, and I love it. Begone the era of designers catering to only celebrities and high society. This year, we are going to see some real people taking the stage.

Check out this picture of Tracy spoofing Donna Karan designing Supreme Court robes for the justices. I mean it's true, from a fashion perspective, how do you solve a problem like Scalia?

CFDA, you just don't know about Tracey! Maybe she'll bring Macca and Stel--l l---a-a-ah- along too! :)

Around the Web in Fashion + News You Can Use

There are a number of cool things in fashion and contest land for The Recessionista's readers to take advantage of this week. First up, the free stuff! The venerable Women's Wear Daily is offering their readers the chance to vote on who you think the CFDA best designer is for 2009. Those who vote will be entered into a contest to win a trip to New York Fashion week this September. Click here to read the details and to cast your vote. After all, it doesn't hurt to take a chance. Plus, I find it fun to look at the fashions from the various designers. Nothing like a little free escapism into the world of fashion. It's a good respite from stressful news in the world. This is what I call "mind candy." I also like the idea of a People's Choice Award for fashion. This is a good chance to let the fashion industry know what works and what doesn't. It's an important reality check for the designers. So it you have a moment, you might want to check it out.

Next up, the New Gap CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Khaki Collection is about to hit stores on June 16th featuring designs from Vena Cave, Alexander Wang, and Albertus Swanepoel. Below is a little picture preview of some of the pieces. I'm anxious to see the sleeveless 1920's inspired looking khaki dress in stores. I was a big fan of the first Gap White Shirt collection featuring Rodarte and Thakoon. I didn't really fall in love with last year's shirts. So, I'll be interested to see how the Khaki collection really looks.

Pictured: The New Vena Cave Khaki Collection from Gap for Summer

There's actually a video on YouTube premiering the entire collection. Warning, the video is a snoozer, so don't watch it and try to operate heavy machinery :) However, you will hear and see the designs right off the rack. Click here to watch the Gap CFDA Khaki collection's scintillating preview. Bring a good strong cup of coffee or tea along to view :)

In answer to reader's requests, I'm letting you know that the new Norma Kamali Summer collection of dresses in now in most stores and on Walmart.com for order. Fellow fashion blogger The Budget Babe also loved NK's summer collection. All the dresses are $20.00.

And finally, only in California the first self-proclaimed Recession Survival Seminar is about to launch Sunday, June 28 in San Diego, CA. It's called .... wait for it " Recession Survival Resources and Solutions, including Housing, Food and Work." A long name and a rather large claim.

Pictured: A New type of Trade Show: The Recession Help Expo coming June 28 in San Diego, CA

I don't know if this type of seminar will be helpful, but some of the links on their website might be useful, so I am posting it here. Here in California, I am becoming keenly aware of how hard hit our state is and that state budget cuts of a drastic kind seem to be on the way. So, I don't think it's a bad idea to offer something like this. I am adding these to my Google alerts tracker to see if other Recession Survival conferences pop up on my radar. Is this the new convention/trade show now? Maybe it needs to be. What do you think readers?

The nice thing about this sale is that Beyond the Rack does ship worldwide, so all Recessionistas can benefit from the stylish savings. Just check their shipping rates, so you are aware of the fees before you buy.

PS-- I've had a couple questions today about WHEN the new Norma Kamali line is coming to Walmart online. The pictures of the new fashions are going on the site now, and hopefully they will be available for order soon. I will post an update when they are there.
