Sunday Savvy: Witty Womenswear at Gilt

Pictured: Gilt Groupe will be offering Chloe, Derek Lam, Temperely London and Thakoon on sale today at 6 pm PST, 9 pm EST

Sunday is finally here. And it's definitely my preferred day of rest. It's extremely hot around most of the country and a general malaise seems to have set in. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am not up for running around in the heat, including shopping or errands.

So good news for those looking for a low maintenance deal. Gilt is having a sale later today on a group of amazing women's designers.
Chole, Derek Lam, Thakoon and one of my personal favorites, Temperely London will all be on sale later this afternoon or early evening. I can't say for sure how low the prices will be, but it's definitely worth a look. As most of us know, retail price for these designers can be in the stratosphere. So, it's worth checking the sale to see how low their designs will be discounted. Click here to join Gilt to check it out.

Bracelets, or any chic accessory are a wonderful way to revitalize an item you may already have in your closet, or add a special touch to a new piece. I like to hear them jingling on my wrists as I move along. It makes me feel good. Like maybe I have some secret money stash or something. Illusions and visions of coinage can be so important. It's almost like a personal ka'ching with each chic stride I take :) The Ettika bracelets are a nice compliment to the Plenty by Tracy Reese sale this Friday, August 28th on GILT FUSE. Personally, I would pair the bracelets with one of my favorites, a Tracy Reese Maxi Dress like the one below. I may have to just check tomorrow to see what Gilt sells this little gem for.

Anna Wintour a Recessionista? She's Heading to Macy's Queens for Fashion's Night Out Sept. 10

Pictured: Vogue Magazine's Guru Anna Wintour is Heading to Macy's

Last night, I was TV channel surfing, being something of a night owl/insomniac, and I came across Vogue Editor Anna Wintour's appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Anna is the alleged doppelganger for Meryl Streep's character in "The Devil Wears Prada." Is this a myth or truth? Only Vogue staffers know for sure. On Letterman, she displayed a wee touch of Meryl's movie bite when she told Letterman about shorter pants that would display his love of colorful socks better. But what I found most interesting about the whole thing is that Anna is out making media appearances pre-Fashion Week to promote the event and the Vogue documentary, The September issue. Interesting to see a magazine editor on a talk show before a MAJOR fashion event that is evolving in the midst of an economic downturn ( a downturn that is not going away as quickly as hoped.) But even cooler than turning up on Dave's show, is the fact that Anna will be hoping over to Macy's in Queens on Sept. 10. I LOVE THIS. Anna will be working the economic stimulus by trying to get consumers into Macy's. While at Macy's she will be signing T-shirts. How delicious is this? A low priced item, a Fashion Night Out T-shirt, will be signed by Anna for the first 50 customers. I understand one of Macy's mainstay designers Michael Kors will also be on hand. Macy's is one of over 700 designers, retailers, and brands participating in Fashion's Night Out events on September 10. Eventually, this event will go global with events to be held around the world. T-Shirts for all! But will there be accessible, affordable fashion for all? Stay tuned. When the Queen of Vogue pops over to Macy's, and not the one in Manhattan's Herald Square, you know the times really are a chang'in.

Check Anna's appearance on Letterman on YouTube in case you missed it. Anna talks about Fashion's Night Out on Sept. 10th and the united attempt to get people back in the stores. Dave asked if the prices would be dropped in order to get consumers back. When Dave asked her what could be bought for $20.00, she mentioned lipstick! Mm...is that Chanel lipstick? Anna, we should talk. There might be a few more things other than lipstick that could be recommended. :) This is the raison d'etre of The Recessionista.

Take a Leap: Frog's Leap Wine on Sale at RueLaLa

In the The Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam the poet wrote that all he needed to be happy was "A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread--and Thou." To these wonderfully true and wise words, I can only add, "Woman can not live by fashion alone." Yes, fashion uplifts me, but every now and then, I need something a bit stronger. Something like say, an exquisitely chilled Chardonnay or a berry scented Pinot Noir. Sales of wine during this recession show I am not alone. Wines priced under $20.00 are on the upswing in the downturn. So good news gentle readers, one of Napa Valley's treasures , Frog's Leap wine, is going on sale tomorrow at RueLaLa.

Pictured: My imaginary PC screen that could dispense Pinot Noir to me, as I blog. Team Recessionista is working on this design.

I will be front and center at my PC screen tomorrow shopping the sale when it starts at 8 am PST, 11 am EST and 10 pm CST in the US. If you live outside the US, look for Napa's divine Frog's Leap wine at local stores in your area. A simple Google search should tell you where you might find some of this reasonably priced nectar. Even without the RueLaLa discount, it's still a cheap and cheerful find. Many bottles are priced at $30.00 US to $40.00 US (the Merlot Rutherford and the Sauvingnon Blanc). I will be on the look out for a pricier bottle tomorrow at a discount, namely their Rutherford Red ( a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cab Franc) which usually retails for $75.00 US. I want the Rutherford Red to become "Recessionista Red" at this sale. The Frog's Leap Rutherford Red has been rated a "90 plus wine" indicating excellent quality. I am also a fan of their lower-priced Zinfandel. Think Boysenberry overtones and smooth flavor with a hint of pepper and you get the idea of the zin sin :)

Overall, I recommend Frog's Leap as rich, complex wines. The winery is very eco-friendly and has a philosophy of organic, dry farming, which is reflected in the bottle price. If you can't find what you're looking for at RueLaLa, click on over to Wine.com. Tomorrow is the last day of their 1 cent shipping sale.

Pictured: Wine.com is have a 1 cent shipping sale

To quote The Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam once again:

"And if the Wine you drink, the Lip you press
End in what All begins and ends in--Yes;
Think then you are To-day what Yesterday
You were--To-morrow You shall not be less. "

Drink up Recessionistas for tomorrow is another day of working, scrimping and living! We shall not be less, we shall just spend less :)

Saturday Sales: Time to Get Your Shop On?

Happy Saturday readers! The weekend is finally here. How relieved are we? The working week, is well, just so much work. :) I'm so over it. Although we heard from several sources that the Recession is waning this week, including the venerable Warren Buffet, I don't think we are all out of the woods yet. Why do I say that? Well, here in California unemployment is at an all time high, and the sales signs are up just about everywhere I turn. So, if you are still shopping, and trying to put some of your hard-earned money back into the economy to give us all the requisite "stimulus", then I feel it's my duty to tell you where some of the best sales are. Here is what is on the Recessionista Radar system for this weekend:

Barney's New York annual warehouse sales are in flight. Here in Los Angeles, this is the final weekend of the sale. That means the lowest prices will be available. In the past this is when I have cruised into the sale and made my selections on the 80% off rack. My shopping trophies include my Marc Jacobs little black dress purchased for $40.00. In LA, the sale is downtown at the convention center. In NY, the sale just started and you can find it at their Chelsea Co-op: Barneys Warehouse Sale, 255 West 17th Street, (between 7th and 8th avenues); 212-450-8400

Rachel Pally is having a sample sale in downtown Los Angeles. As readers know, I am a Rachel Pally fan. Her designs are stylish and comfortable. On sale will be Spring & Summer 09 plus previous collections including White Label. Prices will be 60-80% off of the retail prices. SATURDAY, AUG. 22... 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., SUNDAY, AUG. 23... 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Here's the address Rachel Pally, 2301 E. 7TH ST. SUITE C100 , LOS ANGELES, CA 90023

Accessible to everyone are the Macy's One day sale and the Kohl's sales going on now. I have to give it up to Kohl's for their new fashions for fall. I'll be blogging more on those soon. Meanwhile, check out this Dana Buchman necklace on sale now at Kohl's . Yes, I bought it, because it reminds me of Coco! :) It's very Coco-Less, because it's only $20.00 US.

Pictured: A look I love: Dana Buchman Coin Necklace on sale at Kohl's

If you're reading from the UK or EMEA, give the New Look sale a look. Many new reductions have been taken. I love New Look. I have to get it a look and see if any of the Giles Deacon stuff is left :) I do see a few of the Giles Jersey dresses on the sale

Was £20.00 Now £5.00. £5.00 for Giles, not to be sneezed at!

Pictured: The New Look sale has begun.

I'll be listing more deals soon on my The Recessionista's Top Picks column on the right nav. Remember to stay savvy at the sales :) Check my summer sale tips for more on how to stay strong while getting your shop on!

Forget the Right to Bare Arms, Everyone is Talking about Michelle's Right to Bare Legs

Pictured: Mrs. O in her vacation shorts. Scandalous or normal living?

Did you know that there were actually polls on the Internet this week talking about if Michelle Obama should've worn shorts on her recent trip to the Grand Canyon? Sure, she is the First Lady, but it's been hotter than hades (old world term for Hell) there and around most of the country. So yes, I think she had the right to be comfortable. According to the Huffington Post, they received 13,000 opinions on Michelle's shorts. In their survey , 59% of readers said she was looking just fine in those shorts. Some readers thought maybe the shorts could've been longer, but c'mon she wasn't running around in Daisy Dukes ala Jessica Simpson.

What I found even funnier than Michelle wearing the shorts, was President Obama not wearing them. He knew what might happen after the tempest in a teapot unleashed over his "Mom Jeans." There he was standing overlooking the Grand Canyon in 100 degree temps in his long pants. I mean this is out there in Arizona people! That's the desert. Being President is a lonely thing. I mean the guy literally has to sweat it out in the court of public opinion.

Pictured: The President stays covered up even in Arizona

Readers, do you wear shorts in the summer? Do you think that world leaders should be allowed to wear shorts? I think JFK wore them when he went sailing off Cape Cod.

PS--If I had Michelle's legs, I would be wearing the shorts! :)

Project Runway Returns: One Day it was on Bravo, the Next it was on Lifetime

We waited, we hoped and we prayed, and tomorrow night our fashion prayers will be answered. Project Runway returns to the airways on the Lifetime network. We can only hope the show remains the same. I can't wait to hear Tim utter the words, "This worries me." Some of the best moments on past seasons have been when he said these words to contestants like Vincent, Kane, Kenley and Santino. Despite his gentle warnings, his words usually fell on deaf ears. You could tell from their reactions that they did not believe him. Kane loved his Vegas showgirl look, Vincent thought the glue bottle was necessary and Kylie thought the mermaid, fish scale gown was beautiful. Tim really should learn not to interfere with genius! :) Genius I say!

So, mark your calendars fashion lurvers. Tomorrow night, our favorite designers from past seasons will face off for a fashion showdown. Project Runway airs Thursday August 20 @ 8pm ET/ 7pm Central on Lifetime. To stay up to date on all things runway, check out one of my favorites, the Project Rungay blog. Tom and Lorenzo tell it all! :)

New Tim "bon mots" from tonight's episode:

"This looks like a Halter Diaper"
" The Big Butt thing is a Big Butt Thing"
"Oh, just let it go...."

P.S. I am loving that Runway is in Los Angeles this season at the Fashion Design and Merchandising Center downtown.

The Changing Face of Fashion: Technology Arrives + QVC Coming to Fashion Week!

Pictured: Reem Acra meets with Fashion Bloggers via Skype

The face of fashion is indeed changing. In addition to more designers offering low-priced lines and making their designs accessible, the designers themselves are now becoming more accessible. How? Elementary my dear readers, technology. Although Skype, the internet service which allows for free video and phone conferencing, has long been used by Internet "kewl kids" like moi, high-end designers are now adopting the service to connect with their buyers and target market. One example of this trend is the video conference Reem Acra held with bridal bloggers and the Editor-in-Chief of Brides.com, Michelle Preli today. Using technology, Reem was able to literally "phone it in" from overseas while the bloggers were at her showroom in NY inspecting her beautiful designs. Some of you may remember Reem Acra on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style last season. Reem has long designed beautiful evening gowns for the Emmys, Oscars and other special events. Below is one of my favorites, the breath taking blue dress Christina Applegate wore to the Emmys in 2008.

Pictured: Christina Applegate in Reem Acra

It's so cool that now she is meeting with bloggers. Reem, call me! I know how to use Skype. I'm all jiggy with the technology :)

Another designer who has long been using technology to interact with her clients is Norma Kamali. NK was one of the first designers to see the limitless potential of the Internet. In keeping with her visionary use of the web, Norma has launched a new service where clients can receive live consultations via Skype calls or even receive a video call from the award-winning designer during a
“Try Before You Buy” party. Check with the NK collection for details.

Pictured: Two of my favorite NK retro swimsuit styles. NK please send!

At no cost to the host, the Norma Kamali Collection personal shoppers select pieces that match the lifestyle and body type (very important) of party goers and ship a trunk full of designs to try on and experience in person. This sounds like an invaluable service if you are considering anyone of her various swimsuit styles. Norma has been known to make guest appearances herself!

Designers reaching out to the masses via Skype and private parties are all signs of the changing times, but wait, there is more. And this is my favorite one. It's so delicious. Rachel Zoe is going recessionista by designing a line of fashion accessories for, gasp, wait for it ...QVC! Yes, Rachel is moving from celebrity styling to mass marketing on the QVC site and bringing it to the inner sanctum of all that is holy, NY Fashion Week. Her line of jewelry, scarves, sunglasses and bags for QVC will be shown at NY Fashion Week.

Pictured: Rachel Zoe in her "do not disturb sign" sunglasses and leopard print coat as seen on her Bravo show.

I had heard the rumor that Rachel was going to do a low priced accessory line at several of the consignment stores that I scour in Los Angeles looking for vintage vogue pieces. But QVC? Who knew. Move over Max & Miley, Fashion Week is about to go bananas.

Giving it up to the Gap: Nothing Keeps you Cool like Cotton!

Pictured: My Gap 100% Cotton Recycled Top

Good morning readers! Just time for one more cuppa coffee before I return to the working week. I've just returned from the Big Apple, New York City. I had a great time, but I have to tell you, New York was hot! The heat was a far cry from the moderate temperatures that I enjoy here in Los Angeles, near the beach. I arrived in NY with my LA Maxi dresses, business clothes (black pants suit) and assorted casual Ts and tops. But I have to tell you, nothing kept me as cool running around the city as my 100% cotton, Gap "Fluttered T-top" (pictured above.) So this is my tip du jour. If you find yourself in the hot zone, put on some comfortable 100% cotton. Nothing breathes like cotton, to help keep you cool. Even when it's 100 degrees. This little top is now on sale at the Gap for $24.99 US. The tag on the top noted is was made from recycled fabric, so kudos to Gap for being eco-friendly.

Another comfy top, although it's a a blend of cotton and rayon, is this little floral pin tuck top. To me, this is reminiscent of the 1940s floral look with the little patterns against the solid background. This top is super light and sheer. And, it's on sale for 50% less that it's original sale price.

My final Gap tip is the current $20.00 savings offer on their new 1969 jeans. Check it out at Gap.com. Everyone can use jeans for summer or fall fashion. This is a look that has been in style since Levi Strauss launched them in the late 1800s!

Pictured: Savings on Gap's new line of jeans at Gap.com

For something comfortable and pretty to put on your feet, check out these Badgley Mischka sandals marked down from $268.00 US to $75.00 US at private shopping club Ideeli. Click here to shop Ideeli as my guest.

Pictured: Beautiful discounted Badgley Mischka sandals

I don't recommend these for heavy duty walking, but they add an elegant touch to any summer outfit for going out or even entertaining at home.

Mad for Plaid? Egads!

Pictured: A bad flash back, a replica of my catholic school plaid uniform

So, I just have to say it. What is up with the fall plaid trend? I was strolling down Fifth Avenue in Gotham City today enjoying all the needful things and window shopping, when there it was. I stopped in my tracks. A very upscale retailer's window display was full of....plaid! And not just any plaid. The display showed a plaid jumper that bore an eerie resemblance to the jumper I was forced to wear by my mother at St. Bartholomew's Catholic School. Most shocking of all, in addition to the bad memories, was the price tag. The jumper was not cheap. It was over $100.00 US. So I just have to remark upon this trend, what is going on with all the plaid? What's next? Will the plaid jumper take over Rodeo Drive, the Mall of America, shops on Oxford Street, boutiques along the Champs-Élysées and more? Plaid has already hit the racks in the new Miley and Max Azria collection at Walmart. And, it's selling out. The plaid tops by Miley & Max are "no longer in stock" online.

Pictured: Miley Cyrus plaid top from her Walmart collection.

There are also half-bred, hybrid plaid garments rearing up. By this, I mean a garment with a solid top and a plaid bottom.

Pictured: A Fire Buffalo Plaid Dress from Macy's

I just don't know what to think about this. Do I call Sister Hilda and tell her to recycle all the old plaid uniforms because she could make a fashion statement and maybe a little cash? Or, do I get into the spirit of the season and run to my favorite plaid retailer, Burberry, for tasteful fall plaid cover once it hits the sales racks?

Readers, what do you think? Are you loving the new fall plaid trend, or are you also having a bad school uniform flashback? I've already sighted plaid at Topshop, Juicy Couture, Macy's and the Gap. Were any of you forced to wear plaid as children?

Farewell to Eunice: Classic Style That Was More than Skin Deep

Pictured: Eunice Kennedy Shriver in a fashionable tennis look

I'm glancing through the morning news today and I see the venerable Eunice Kennedy Shriver has passed away. She was not considered a style icon, but she had a classic style that was more than skin deep. When I think of Eunice, I think of a sporty classic look, and Talbots' preppy style. I'll always remember at one of Governor Schwarzenegger's victory celebrations how she stepped onto the stage toting her Hermes Kelly bag at the Century City Plaza hotel. She looked like she was holding on to that bag for dear life, and I loved that. If I owned a Kelly bag, even if I was a millionaire, I would hold it the exact same way. Her big heart matched her big pocketbook.

Farewell sweet Eunice. You showed us beauty that was far more than skin deep. And you helped some kids with special needs that otherwise would've been left behind. Thank you.

Summer Style: Anna Sheffield Jewelry, Denim and a Woodstock Contest

Pictured: NY Designer Anna Sheffield' Big Bang collection of jewelry

This just in from The Recessionista Radar system: NY jewelry designer Anna Sheffield is collaborating with Target on a jewelry collection that is about to hit stores in the US on August 30. The line features delicate , sterling silver pieces. Here's a little sneak preview. The images look nice, but I'll have to wait to see the real deal in the stores.

Pictured: Anna Sheffield for Target earrings and charm bracelet

Based on the pictures, I like the images of the delicate drop and playful stud earrings plus the charm necklaces with multi-chains. I just entered to win the Country Living Giveaway for Anna's Target locket. Country Living is giving away 15 of these lockets. Click here to enter. This is the type of Victoria era replica that I love! I also entered to win the jewelry certificate prize on Anna's site. She does a $300.00 monthly giveaway on her site in exchange for your subscribing to her news list. Here is the link to the Big Bang necklace page, the monthly giveaway is in the upper left corner of the page. I'm all about the free!

Pictured: Anna Sheffield Locket Giveaway from Country Living Magazine. I could see this on Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte. This piece retails for $49.99.

The Target collection will rang in price from $19.99 to $79.99. Anna Sheffield is best known for her upscale Bing Bang line. I've always liked her line, but didn't have $500.00 to spare for a new necklace. Sorry, Anna, but that's Chanel jewelry money there for my Coco savings slush fund. Just a matter of personal taste on that one, but when I spend hundreds of dollars I want the classic look. Now I can cozy up to Anna's jewelry without spending hundreds via Tar-jay. I did blog on Anna's Big Bang line previously, when it was on sale at Ideeli for far less that retail.

In other news, props to Barneys for offering to recycle Denim. This is so eco-friendly. During the month of August, if you bring in a pair of your old jeans, Barneys will recycle them. In exchange for the trade-in, you will receive 20% off a new pair of jeans.

Pictured: Barneys will take your old jeans, and give you a discount on new ones.

I like this angle. When you think of all the old jeans sitting around that are out of style, or don't fit anymore, this is a good way to put them to use. This offer is valid in the month of August at Barney's C00Ps and flagship locations.

And if you want to keep your jeans, check out Ideeli's Woodstock Contest. You might be able to put those old jeans to use to dress up like a cool hippie at Woodstock. Check the Ideeli blog for details.

Sunday Savvy: Great Designers on Sale

Happy Sunday readers!!! I'm hoping everyone survived another long week and lived to enjoy a good Sunday detox from the working week. As is my "wont," I am refueling with a good cup of extra strength, fully-leaded coffee and looking around at the sales and fashion news. This week brings some great bargains for those of us struggling to stay fashionable while keeping costs down.

First up, there is new Norma Kamali in store and at Walmart online. New summer dresses in two new styles, strapless and shirred tank dresses have just arrived. I have my eye on the above pictured leopard print tank dress for only $18.00. There are also some versatile slim jersey pencil skirts and new "Henley" tops just in. My only word of caution here is this. I find NK for Walmart runs small. The reviewers at Walmart online agree. So, I would advise sizing up. For the price, leave your size vanity behind.

Next up, you can find classic Vera Wang for less at two shopping outlets. Her boutique line, Vera Wang Lavender Label is on sale at discount designer club RueLaLa today. The styles are classic, with beautiful tops and dresses offered for up to 80% off. Click here to shop as my guest.

For more deals Vera, check out the Simply Vera line over at Kohl's. It is on sale today too. You'll see the similarities between Lavender Label and the simply Vera designs. There is no doubt, these are Vera's patterns, not just her name that she licensed to Kohl's.

My final deal on a great designer for less is Eileen Fisher at shopping club Ideeli. I just ordered some of her pants from the sale. Her clothes are so comfortable. The fit is free and fluid. Perfect summer wear. Her designs are never going to stick to your body in the heat because of their loose and airy fit. The fabrics in her collections are the key to this ease of wear. Pure linen, washable stretch crepe, and soft knit hemp are the fabrics from which her comfortable fashions are sewn. Click here if you want to give the selection at Ideeli a glance. I'm happy to share, now that I already ordered my stuff !:) The Recessionista motto on sales is always, " Me first, then everybody else!" Yes, shopping is a selfish business. Check out this tunic jacket reduced from $285.00 to $45.00.

The deals are out there! The latest designer to join the budget brigade is Rachel Roy. She has launched her new lower priced line called Rachel Rachel Roy (nice reuse of her name here ) backed by Jones of NY. The contemporary Rachel Rachel Roy line, is now available at Macy's online and in 85 of their stores. The line is priced at $59 to $299 for sportswear, $79 to $199 for shoes, up to $195 for jewelry, and as much as $109 for handbags.

I like this "democratization of fashion." It's great to see more wonderful designers at affordable prices. I hope to see more of this trend at New York Fashion Week. Dana Thomas has an interesting article on Huffington Post this week about the changes striking the fashion industry. I don't think the fashion industry is coming to a halt or being killed by greed, but rather, experiencing a rebirth. Fashion should be for everyone. And, I think we are getting closer to that mass accessibility and affordability. As Norma Kamali said when I met her, "The design has no price."

Target Snaps Up Wearable Art: Rodarte Collection for Target Coming in December

Pictured: The Rodarte designers Laura (in stripes) and Kate Mulleavy at Pasadena's Huntington Gardens

A lovely early holiday gift has just arrived: the announcement that Pasadena designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy are doing a line for Target that will be on the racks in December 2009. I'm so excited about this one. I bought their white shirts from their Gap collection a few years (2007) ago. I still treasure my scoop neck white top with the little bows are over the bodice. It's so beautiful.

Rodarte is well know for their vintage inspired, romantic looking dresses from their runway collections. Their models sometimes look like little Degas ballerinas walking in their tulle.

Natalie Portman is a Rodarte lover and has worn their classic styles to film premieres. Check her out below in this 1920s inspired frock.

Only a few sketchy details have been reported about their Target line. According to British Vogue, the line will be a 55 piece collection. It will be part of the Go Collection, so I am hoping that is will be sized for more than teenage girls. :) I have hope for that, since the pieces in their Rodarte collection and their Gap line have been sized appropriately. You can see that below in the pictures of the sisters in their own designs with their models.

Many Rodarte designs retails for thousands of dollars. So, I look forward to seeing their Target line for much less. If you live outside the US, take heart. You know the whole line will find its way to eBay.

Watch this space for the Target collection images when they are available in November. It's good to see the democratization of fashion marching on. Now we just need Walmart to announce a new Norma Kamali holiday collection. :)
