Hot off the Press: Discount on the DKNY Cozy as seen on Kell on Earth

Deal alert, the colorful and versatile DKNY "Cozy" wrap is on sale for 10% off its retail price on the DKNY site, when you join the site and become a member.  When you visit the site, check out the cool "Cozy" video. The video was a collaboration between DKNY and Kelly Cutrone (star of Bravo's Kell on Earth).  Its a great piece of marketing.  You get the energy and the street vibe of NY married to the chic of DKNY. After all, that is what DKNY fashion is all about, New York Heart and Soul.  If you haven't seen it, the cozy is the perfect investment piece since it can be worn a variety of ways, for one price.  The Cozy owes much its precursor, Norma Kamali's "All In One Top."

Pictured: A few ways to wear the colorful DKNY cozy. (Photo courtesy of DKNY)

Click here to check out the Cozy video, and get in on the savings at DKNY.com.

If you're on the West Coast, catch Kell on Earth on Bravo tonight, Monday March 29th at 10 pm PST/9 CST  to see the behind the scenes look at the making of the video on the streets of NY.  Also, join us on Twitter to ask @BRAVOTV to not make this the last season of Kell on Earth (use the hashtag #Kellonearth.)  Sure, Kell on Earth has some rough edges at times. I hate to see the interns with the dark circles under their eyes, but hey, that is at least real.  For myself, I am sick of the multiple versions of the Real Housewives of xxx City (NY, Atlanta, Orange County,New Jersey).  None of these ladies like each other, few of them hold jobs and watching the endless in-fighting is getting painful.  Enough of the table flipping, the wig pulling, the cat fighting and name calling worse than any high school clique. Give me the story of a real women trying to hold her business together during the recession any day.  I prefer the real to the Botox. Any day, any time.  Bravo, are you listening?

Treesje Handbags: Why Celebrities Carry Them and Love Them

Pictured: Tressje Handbag Client,  Actress Krysten Ritter poses with handbag designer Laura Darrah at Saks Fifth Avenue. (photo M. Hall)

This Saturday, Treesje handbags hosted a special event at Saks in Beverly Hills.  Always in search of a better handbag, at a good price, I decided to check it out.  What I didn't realize is that Treesje is a celebrity favorite.  I was astonished by the collection of towncars, Bentleys and Rolls Royces in the Saks parking lot. Apparently, everyone loves a deal on a good handbag!  Saks shoppers received a new piece from Treeje's Sweet Little Goodies collection of leather cosmetic cases as a gift with purchase of a Treesje bag.  Those little bags usually retail for $98.00, to get one for free was a good deal.

Pictured: Mena Suvari with the silver Jovi bag, (Photo Credit: StartTracks.)

I sighted actress Mena Suvari from the film, American Beauty, at the elevators near the Treesje display with her shopping bags.

Have you heard of Treesje? This small boutique line of handbags is designed by two Los Angeles designers, Laura Darrah and Shelia Nizzarian.  I was fortunate enough to interview Laura and learn how these two designers were able to launch their collection of bags and gain such an elite cliente. Laura tells me, "We meet as bridesmaids at a friend's wedding. We named our handbag line, Treesje, after the friend."  The line was launched in 2005, and one of the first to discover it was LA trendsetter Lauren Conrad.  She started carrying the bags before she was on the hit show The Hills.  She loved the uniqueness of the bags.  I asked Laura, what is it that makes them unique.  She replied, "I think its the blend of edgy funky touches plus classic influences.  Plus, we are two designers, so you really get two perspectives." One of their top sellers, the Jovi bag was influenced by the classic style of one on my favorites, Chanel.

Pictured: One of Treesje's Top Sellers is the Jovie bag. (Photo by M. Hall)

The Jovie bag is a cross body bag style, inspired by a 70s Chanel bag that had cross strap. The cross strap style makes it easy to carry across the body, with the weight falling on the hip. Other popular styles include the carryall bag with stud hardware,  their classic satchels in bright colors, the "Parker" hobo and the "Monroe" bowler bag (definitely lustworthy.) Clients include: Blake Lively, Gwen Stefani, Jessica Szohr, Scarlett Johansson, and Katherine Heigl.

Pictured: An assortment of the Treesje bags in bright colors and more traditional styles. (Photo: M. Hall)

I asked Laura what the hot trends are for Spring in handbags. She notes that bright colors are very hot. We'll see more "acid yellow", hot pink and teal being carried. Also, gun metal hardware, rivets and studs are on trend accents for spring and fall.  The Treesje bags are distinctive for their hardware touches. Studs, metal looped zipper pulls and belt buckle closures are signature touches.  As for prices, the bags range for $98.00 (Sweet Little Goodies) to over $500.00 (carryalls).  The price of the bags reflects the workmanship.  This is not "pleather" all bags are made of genuine Italian leather.

Pictured: All Treesje handbags are made with genuine leather. (Photo: M. Hall)

I asked Laura about warranties on the bags, since the bags are not cheap.  She notes, "All our bags come with a 1 year warranty.  Look for the warranty card inside the bag.  If there is a problem with the bag, you can use the warranty."  All repairs are done by the designers in their Culver City offices.   So how can you get Treesje for less? Laura says, "Look for sales at the retailers who carry the bags."  Retailers include: Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Saks,  Luna Boston and Kitson US.  The bags are also sold outside the US at retailers in Canada, London, UK and select stores in Japan.  For discounts, look for them on Bluefly.com and of course, eBay. My best savings tip on these bags is to look for them at a great site called The Guiltless Purse.  They have the best discounts I have seen on these bags.  So look around a little bit, you can enjoy Treesje styles, but not pay retail :)  Watch for more Saks Treesje events across the US, and the deals offered there.

People StyleWatch Deals. Savings on Shabby Apple, 1928 Jewelry and more!

Pictured: This retro-chic style dress is a featured deal from Shabby Apple in People StyleWatch this week. It's 20% off with the code from  People  Stylewatch.  (Photo courtesy of Shabby Apple, via People StyleWatch.)

So one of my guilty pleasures are my subscriptions to People and People StyleWatch.  I don't pay the newsstand price for the magazine, I buy it via Amazon.com magazines where I get it very deeply discounted.  One of the good things about StyleWatch is the special deals and coupon codes for readers in each issue of the magazine.  Its a great way to get some quality items using the offers that People is able to negotiate with vendors.  This week, there are 21 deals featured including the above pictured Casablanca dress from Shabby Apple.  This dress channels old 1950s Christian Dior  style with the bow tie, and the high wrap shoulders.  It retails for $86.00, but with the style code, (stylewatch20off)  you get it for $69.00.  Of course, I had to test drive this, and I ordered it for myself.  I'll let you know if its as good as it looks when I receive it.

This week there are 21 special deals offered via People StyleWatch.  Deals are from LA's ShopRobertson.com,  SINE NY, AU 79 Jewels, and one of my favorite Project Runway designers, Kara Janx.  Remember Kara's Kimono Dress and Michael Kor's complimenting her on it? Deals range from clothing to accessories, to jewelry to bags.  Definitely worth a look, since there are some quality items with savings as much as 30%  off  of retail offered. Some of the accessories might work for prom or as Mother's Day gifts.  There are savings on one of my favorites,  1928 Jewelry.  Check out this beautiful flowered cuff from 1928 Jewelry.

Pictured: This 1928 jewelry cuff, can be purchased for 25% off using the PeopleStyle watch code. (Photo courtesy of 1928 Jewlery, via People StyleWatch.)
The PeopleStyleWatch deal is a discount of  25% off site-wide at 1928.com by entering "People25" at checkout,  expiration date is : April 12. 2010.  One thing I have noticed is, the deals seem to go quick, so if you like it, and the price is right for you, order.  I tried to order something last week, and puff, it was gone, I was too late!  Check it out and let me know what you think? Will you shop for others like Mom, or for yourself?  That is the eternal question.

If you got People magazine this week (April 5th), did you see that two celebrities were spotted wearing dresses from H&M on the red carpet? Kate Mara looked amazing in the $39.00 Red Rosettee Dress from new H&M Garden Collection.  Jessica Lowndes wore a black sweetheart neck black H&M dress for $49.99.   I love that celebs are seen wearing these inexpensive looks and that they look, luxurious.   Here's to more of the chic n'cheap!

This is good news  for savvy shoppers.  I have long enjoyed shopping at the Off 5th chain, although I still enjoy the sales at the high-end Saks Fifth Avenue store.  The reason is they stock quality goods, the staff is helpful and its enjoyable to be in their stores.  After all, sometimes shopping for the best deal is hard work, and Saks has always provided a pleasant shopping experience for customers.  Hot on the heels of the news about their expansion of their outlet chain, some other great things are going on at Saks Fifth Avenue that you may want to take advantage of.  Here's a little Saks round up for my savvy readers.

Emporio Armani Shows Customers Classic Looks to Beat the Economic Blues

Pictured: A beautiful Armani lacey top with black trim that can also be worn open as a jacket (Photo: M. Hall)

Emporio Armani and ELLE magazine partnered tonight to put on an exclusive runway event of their Spring/Summer 2010 collections for men and women.  Most of the attendees were longtime Armani customers, and I was impressed that so many of them turned out after work to see the styles.  Of course, it is Mr. Armani, so the talent of the designer is a considerable draw even to those tired from working all day.  ELLE magazine Style Director, Kate Lanphear was the master of cermonies for the small, intimate event. Kate kicked off the show by acknowledging  how the Internet, blogs and the immediacy of information and style knowledge and has made people more educated about fashion.  And the tough economy has made those educated consumers more choosy than ever about what they purchase and wear.  Although the prices at Armani have not dropped due to the current recession, the designer's classic style does help to transcend the economic malaise. If you buy Armani, the odds are you'll be enjoying it for years.  In my opinion, Emporio  Armani has always been on trend, but not trendy.  There is nothing "faddish" about Armani fashion, and that was clear in the selection of styles shown.  According to Ms. Lanphear, Armani style still speaks to customers and in the current economic climate, "its all about investment pieces."  The styles shown,  emphasized classic jackets, pants and amazing synthetic fabrics which customers actually got to give the "touch test."

Pictured: Customers at the Rodeo store were encouraged to feel the fabrics on this synthetic blend dress with the beautiful scalloped layers. This short scalloped dress with flat sandals appealed to customers of all ages. (Photo: M. Hall)

To extend the life of basic pieces, Ms. Lanphear emphasized the importance of wearing different accessories and shoes.  There were plenty of accessories on hand, beautiful statement necklaces, flat sandals, heels, fringed handbags and roped scarves worn as necklaces and Armani's trademark big "Berlin" sunglasses.  For summer, classics for women included white jeans, tuxedo vests or jackets intermixed with tees or basic black shirts.  For men, Ms. Lanphear showed off what she called the "Grandpa Chic" look, even acknowledging that some of the men's styles had an almost "amish look."  Most in the crowd, self included, didn't really think this was the kind of thing they would pay Armani prices for.  One man said he was more likely to buy a basic black shirt with a high foldover neckline and black jacket, than the  red colored jacket shown with short pants. Still the colored jacket with the short pants was appealing and well done, as you can see in the picture below.  The short pants are just not going to be an investment piece for most men.  Ditto the colored jacket.

Pictured: The menswear new look, short pants, colored jacket with black shirt and tie.  Model Patrick strikes the pose with ELLE's Kate Lanphear.(Photo M. Hall)

Of course, to really get the rundown on Armani fashion, I wanted to talk to the people who wear the clothes.  After all, for any designer its all about the customer.  The amazing thing about Armani is that even though prices are high, the brand enjoys tremendous customer loyalty.  Their customer service is also praised by their customers.  I asked some of the event attendees, what is the Armani  "Why to buy?"   Los Angeles resident, Doris Littman told me, " I shop at Armani because I  know it is going to look good and feel good."  She emphasized that she loves how the clothes make her feel. Attendee Patti Ladd had a different reason for shopping Armani.  She told me, " I like Armani because its always classic from one season to the next."

Pictured: Fashion Friends Doris Littman and Patti Ladd are longtime customers at Emporio Armani. (Photo M. Hall)

Of course, being The Recessionista, I had to ask, Ms. Lanphear from ELLE if she recommended any Armani wardrobe staples as "go to " pieces for those of us on a limited budget.  She said, "I think a blazer or jacket is the best piece to choose.  And you can mix it with different accessories and shirts to update it."  She also emphasized that Armani offers a variety of blazers from the "boyfriend blazer" to tuxedo jackets, to short jackets.  There are many choices to suit customer's individual styles and proportions.   Off the runway, and onto the racks, I had my own style picks! Here are some of my needful things.

Pictured: A silk seafoam top with jeweled collar necklace

Pictured: Lustworthy:  The leather scalloped cream jacket, this in on my watch list.

As beautiful as it is, most of us, can't afford to stock our closets full of Mr. Armani.  However, they do have sales at Emporio Armani and here's a little tip on how to find out about them. Follow Emporio Armani Sales (EmpArmaniSales) on Twitter.  This Twitter ID is not associated with Armani, but it does give out some great information.  Check their sales updates.

As frugal times continue, fashion classics are making a much needed come back and Emporio Armani, and Armani designs, transcend time.

Jen Awad Brings Color and a "New Look" to Los Angeles Fashion Week

Pictured: Jen Awad's striking hot pink cocktail dress with roses. ( Photo courtesy of Jen Awad., Photo by: Jen Zeitlen)

Last night Jen Awad showed Los Angeles a new look at 1940s styles.  Just as Christian Dior was determined to give women a "New Look" after the somber styles of World War II by bringing out a collection full of cinched waists, full skirts, and jackets with big buttons, Jen Awad brings that new look style to women in 2010 looking to break away from the somber charcoal and gray of some fall runway collections.

Pictured: Christian Dior's "New Look" style from 1947.  A tailored jacket showing off an hourglass figure with a full skirt.

When I saw Jen's collection, I could just imagine Rita Hayworth in Gilda or Gene Tierney's Laura walking into the future wearing her pieces.  I felt like cheering when I saw her models coming down the runway.   There's no need for the mourning shrouds and the extreme goth looks shown by some of the other designers.Who wants to cross over to the dark side?   I had the chance to talk Jen after her runway show about what inspires her and her vintage vogue collection. She told me, " I love the 1940s, the structure of the clothing, the top stitching and the embellishments. In my collection, I was trying to bring that aesthetic in with a futuristic sense.  The hourglass silhouette, old school materials like georgette, pearls and wool suiting, these are the elements I wanted to bring in."

Pictured: This dress gives new meaning to the term, dripping in pearls. ( Photo courtesy of Jen Awad.,Photo by: Jen Zeitlen)

Many of the pieces in her collection have fabric rosettes around the collar for decoration.  I asked her why she added all the roses.  Jen notes, "I just likes the concept of roses. In last collection, I had a print “ called drunken roses”  on some of the pieces.  I like the feminine touches like a oversized, glamorous bunches of roses."  That's why she choose roses as enhancements on her dress collars, necklines and on the body of one of her evening dresses.

Pictured: Ring around the rosey, roses decorate the neckline of a beautiful Jen Awad dress. ( Photo courtesy of Jen Awad,Photo by: Jen Zeitlen.)

Pictured: Calling Joan Crawford, Jen Awad, flutter sleeve teal dress. ( Photo courtesy of Jen Awad.,Photo by: Jen Zeitlen)

Even though the economy is slow, I think women are still buying things within reason that uplift them and make them feel good (witness the recent Target Liberty of London sell out.)  Jen Awad's Fall 2010 collection definitely comes from a very positive place, with red, green and bold blues--no somber black and browns here. She says it is her goal to "send a  positive message."  Designing and picking the colors in her collection is a very emotional, joyful process.  She tells me, "Its about what pops and what looks good."

Asked about her design perspective, Jen says, "I designs within the lines of a women’s silhouette, the hourglass is important, and women need their bodies back. Its ok to be feminine." Amen sis-tah!

Watch this space for more information on Jen's designs and where they will be sold.   This young, designer is still in her twenties and only graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in 2008.  When people scoff that LA Fashion Week is just a wanna be without originality, designers like Jen Awad show that although smaller, Los Angeles runways can still offer plenty of style. She has done  impressive work in a short period of time. Her collection was bold and refreshing, offering a "new look" at some classic styles.

Kell on Earth Puts on a Heavenly Show for Alternative Apparel at Los Angeles Fashion Week

Pictured: The Carnivale view of all the Alternative Apparel models after the runway show. (all photos by M. Hall)

A little order descended on LA Fashion week tonight in the form of PR maven Kelly Cutrone's production of the Alternative Apparel show.  The party actually took place following the fashion show, not during it (nice improvement over some of the other shows.)  The show started promptly after seating and things appeared organized with actual lists of the clothing being modeled sitting on the chairs. Celebrities arrived on time and were friendly.   The whole tone was low-key, but completely professional.

If you haven't heard of Alternative, then its my pleasure to introduce you to one of Los Angeles' best fashion houses with a unique blend of style and California cool.  Alternative has elevated the simple t-shirt from couch potato wear to a fashion-forward staple. Actress Carla Gallo, who starred in HBO's Carnivàle  arrived at the show in an Alternative T-shirt dress.  She praised her dress from Alternative as very comfortable, and based on her favorite fashion piece, surprise,  a T-shirt!

Pictured: Actress Carla Gallo in an Alternative T-Shirt dress with pockets hanging just above the hem.

Pictured: Actor Michael Rady from Melrose Place,  attended the show and said his fashion tastes run to comfortable T-shirts and denim.

Pictured: Nikki Reed (Twilight Saga) and Krysten Ritter (She's Out of My League) came out to support Alternative.

Although the celebs on the red carpet (Shenae Grimes, Ayla Kell, Bree Turner, and Jason Silva) wore the styles Alternative Apparel has become famous for, the runway show was pure vintage. Tonight's show was like stepping back into the past, specifically Depression era America.  I could see Bonnie Parker wearing the beautiful  floral dress, or the sweaters and caps.

Pictured: My favorite vintage inspired look from the Alternative collection, the Limited Edition Floral Dress with belt and two-toned period Oxfords.

For menswear, there were plenty of newsboy caps, thermal crews, simple slacks, work boots and even suspenders. My guess is that most men won't wear all these pieces together, but will mix and match them, probably without the newsboy cap.:)
Pictured: The layered look, with a sweater, jacket and pleated trousers with work boots.

Its interesting that the show was inspired by classic 1930s Americana and the style of an old time carnival. Entitled, "The Show Must Go On" the Alternative show was like looking back over your shoulder at vintage styles and simpler times.  The lines were sharp, fabrics looked comfortable and soft, and everything appeared uniquely comfortable. The effortless style is purely intentional.  Alternative Chief Creative Officier and Founder Greg Alterman notes that his collection is "all about street-wise sensibility with an edge. These pieces are chic, smart, and practical, a much needed response to the current economic client and global value shift in the fashion world."

Pictured: A simple thermal tee with vest, newsboy hat, riding pants and amazing equestrian boots.

There was no pretense about this show, although it did have a whimsical touch.  As the picture below shows, the collection was literally a circus of key trends and styles with the brand’s signature vintage softness.

Pictured: A more whimsical item, the eco-racerback tank, feathered headpiece, nude waist cincher, silk & feather skirt, nude fishnets and cream ankle period boots.

If you're interested in learning more about Alternative Apparel, check out their website.  They are a having a super sale, with markdowns as low as 75% off of their retail prices. I love how some of the tees are named for areas of Los Angeles like Echo Park, Silver Lake and Topanga.  There are many of their comfortable tops on sale for as little as $9.99.  In LA, Alternative is known as a very recessionista-friendly brand.  And their Fall/Winter collection makes it clear that more affordable styles are on the way.

PS: I have to mention that show producer Kelly Cutrone was very accomodating.  In fact, she was asking those of us taking pictures if we had everything we needed. She even graciously posed for a photo for The Recessionista, even though I am sure she did not want to.  You can tell, she likes to be behind the show, not out front.

Pictured: Kelly Cutrone was the Alternative show Director delivering a quality, professional show.

Thank you Kelly! :)

The Recessionista Reviews Jodi Arnold's Collection for The Limited. Simply Amazing!

This morning I took a little trip out to The Limited to see Jodi Arnold's new collection for the chain.  I had not been to The Limited in years.  Not because I don't like their clothes, I do.  I just don't wear the professional suits and dresses they are known for into the office anymore.  Times have changed, and some days, I am working at home from the computer wearing my best sweat suit or jeans and a t-shirt.  So, I haven't thought I needed to stop into The Limited for "the real sale" as their old jingle advertised.   Jodi Arnold bought me in, and what a wonderful surprise.  Her collection is quite simply amazing, and not just because of the price point, but because of the quality and the handwork on each piece.  I have long admired the designer's work.  Her trademark touches include embellishments with beads, embroidery or applique, beautiful detail around the neckline to highlight your face and lovely prints.  All these touches have been incorporated into her Jodi Arnold for The Limited collection at a reasonable price point.  The most amazing thing about this collection is how well-made it is.  The garments are not made of purely synthethic materials (polyester) with hems that are just serged with a zig zag stitch as some of the "budget lines" are.  The sizing is Misses, not Juniors and the size range is from 0 to 14.  The beading and sequin detail on the tops is hand sewn.  I had the opportunity to meet Jodi Arnold in Los Angeles and talk to her about her The Limited collection.   She told me she was very pleased to work with The Limited and that team at The Limited was wonderful to collaborate with.  That team work definitely comes through in the garments.  According to Jodi, she delivered her designs to The Limited and they were able to source them through their large network of suppliers to bring the overall price down.  Best of all, her designs are carried by all The Limited stores, in all markets, not just a select few. The super soft tops in the Jodi Arnold for The Limited collection are made of Modal fabric.  This is a fabric that draps beautifully and is supersoft.  It is also resistant to fading and shrinkage, which is good news for shoppers who want to make their designer investment last.   I bought the two tops picture below, and I love the feel of them. My friend Maggie who worked for both Calvin Klein and Michael Kors inspected them and confirmed that the embellishments around the neckline were stitched by hand.

Pictured: My two new purchases, the Beading Medley top and the Back Necklace top.

I had the opportunity to talk to The Limited store manager, Jessica Hartnett at the Redondo Beach store. She told me, "We're very excited to have Jodi Arnold's designs in the store.  Some visitors don't know her work, but when they see the clothes, they fall in love." Jessica tells me new pieces are due into The Limited stores in April.  I asked her what the top seller from the collection was.  She told me that the Embroidered Print dress is the one most customers are taken with.  Its easy to see why.  This little dress is a subtle charcoal gray color with accents of red applique around the neckline, and a red print above the hemline.  The  neckline accents are an asymmetrical scroll of chiffon swirling above a scoop neck.  Delicate pleating around the waist ensures a slimming fit.  Take a look, and see for yourself.  This one is a steal, particularly since it is made of 70% silk and 30% linen.  This can go from the office to an evening out.  With just a touch of linen, this will breathe well for spring and summer wear, without turning into a wrinkled mess.

Other pieces in the collection that are standouts for the beautiful sparkle they bring to the wearer are the Sequined One Shoulder dress and the Flutter Sleeve romper.  I'm not a big fan of the one piece romper but the Jodi Arnold one is very well done with delicate flutter short sleeves, cute buttons with little loops instead of button holes and a comfortable drawstring waist.  There are shorts in the collection now, with pants coming soon. Definitely try on Jodi's pants, because at The Limited if you like the pants, and you buy one pair , you will get $25.00 off the 2nd pant. If you are a  credit card holder at The Limited, you get free hemming on your pants if they need shortening.  There are other savings available at The Limited too that you can use to save on the Jodi Arnold collection. If you open a credit card account at The Limited, then you save 15%. You also receive Virtual Dollars with a purchase, so I will get savings off my next purchase at The Limited with a coupon I received today when I purchased.  The Virtual Dollars coupon is good for $25.00 off another purchase of $50.00 or more at The Limited on the dates on the coupon. More savings on future purchases are available if you take the survey mentioned on your sales receipt.  I see more Jodi Arnold for The Limited in my future.

The last thing I love about Jodi Arnold for The Limited is that the pieces can actually compliment the pieces from Jodi Arnold NY that I own because there are commonalities in the color palettes.  I have some investment pieces from Jodi Arnold NY, like my Currant Colored Knit Wrap (below) that will go very nicely with my new  The Limited collection  lavender beading medley top.

Bottom line, Jodi Arnold for The Limited is a great designer at a great price.  You won't see pieces of this quality from a big box retailer.  If you haven't stopped into The Limited in a while, you should check it out. I say that because I think when something good is offered to consumers at a reasonable price point, consumers need to send a message to the store that we like this and want more of this.  I wish more consumers had done that with the Celia Birtwell collection from Express.  That is what I call the "power of the purse."  I don't need more garments with serge stitched zig-zag crooked hems in my closet, made of polyester puckering at every seam priced at only $9.99.   What I think we all want is more stylish garments, that flatter us and don't send us into debt.   Jodi Arnold for The Limited fits the bill.

If you're interested in learning more about this collection, check out The Limited's five city tour with Jodi.  When I talked to Jodi she told me," I really like meeting my customers."  At her recent sale in Los Angeles, she spent time welcoming buyers and talking to them about their style and their color choices.  She takes all the feedback and preferences of her buyers into account when putting together her designs.  I wish more designers would go out on the road and talk to the ladies who actually buy and wear their clothes.   If you live in DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas or St. Louis, you're invited to meet the designer and receive some special savings.  Savings, a word we love at  The Recessionista!

Project Runway's Gordana Gehlhausen headlines LA Fashion Week's Project Ethos Event

Project Runway Season 6 contestant Gordana was the headliner at Friday night's Project Ethos LA Fashion Week event at the beautiful old Music Box theatre on Hollywood and Vine.  Her collection was rich in vintage styling, layered looks and even classic knitwear. In case you don't remember Gordana from last season's show, she worked on the Macy's challenge with Irina as part of the winning team, and won the challenge to revitalize an old wedding dress.  For me, her best moment on Project Runway was when she showed this absolutely gorgeous evening dress (pictured below).  A dress in this style and design was part of the collection she showed at the Project Ethos show.  This dress is a show stopper and belongs on the red carpet.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Gordana after her LA Fashion Week show and learning a little more about her design perspective.  Although she did not win Project Runway, Gordana was definitely the star of the show at the Music Box on Friday night.  Indeed, Project Ethos held her show back until after 11 pm. so that everyone could see her work.  Even late arrivals were still in time for Gordana.  I asked Gordana how it felt to be the star.  She said, "It feels good to have something that people want to see." And they did really want to see it.  Crowd reaction to Gordana's collection was more befitting of a rock star than a fashion designer. The crowd was on their feet, rocking to pulse pounding music and screaming as her models walked the runway.  It was quite a change from the reserve and business like atmosphere of New York Fashion week.

When she did Project Runway, Gordana was living in Charleston, SC and running her boutique GOGA. Now, she has relocated to San Diego, CA and is a Southern California treasure. She still has her GOGA boutique in South Carolina, but has opened a second boutique GOGA boutique in  San Diego's Gaslamp district.  You can see GOGA by Gordana online by visting her online store, ShopGoga. A native of Yugoslavia, Gordana grew up in Bosnia.  Her eastern european work ethic is visible in every line of her work.  She tells me, "I make everything in the collection. All the samples are personally made by me.  All the jewelry is made by me."  Clearly, Gordana puts a lot of herself into each collection.  That attention to detail showed in her runway collection at the Project Ethos show.  The collection was inspired by her recent trip to China.  She was particularly taken with what she saw in Mongolia and the layered styles she saw there. She tells me, "You'll find lots of layers, textures, and tribal influence in my designs. "  Of her new collection, she says," I like creating clothing that is high fashion, elegant, and wearable.  You can always accessorize with a beautiful necklace to dress up a cute tunic or dress down with a simple knit scarf."

The beautiful long black, knit dress she showed (pictured below) is a perfect example of a simple style that can be dressed up with earrings or a cuff bracelet.

The price range for GOGA by Gordana ranges from $150.00 for her simple dresses to $4,000 for her haute couture looks. Her beautiful knits are currently featured in the spring/summer issue of  VOGUE Knitting magazine. If you're in Southern California, check out her boutique, GOGA by Gordana, located in the historic Gaslamp District on 4th and Market Street in San Diego. YELP! reviewers have given GOGA high marks for customer service and style. Some viewers of her collection at LA Fashion Week compared her work to  designers Anna Sui and Adrienne Vittadini.  Those are good designers to be in the compared to.
