NEW A|X Armani Exchange in LA, Emporio Armani Red and Special Giveaways

Pictured: A|X Armani Exchange's Asymmetrical Ruffle Top (photo courtesy of Armani Exchange.)

EXCITING NEWS!!!!  If it wasn't exciting enough that some of Armani's magic style is available in a lower priced lined called  A|X Armani Exchange, we just got a new superstore in Los Angeles on Robertson.  The store is humongous.  Only in LA- LA Land ( and I say that because I live here, and I say it with love) would you find a store like this.  This new store is located in the formerly ultra-luxe Armani Casa home design store, the new A|X store has been made-under to resemble a low key Hollywood nightclub, covering 6,600 square feet with raw concrete floors, chrome fixtures, and blue fluorescent bulb lighted displays.  It's all about the blue lights, right? :)  And I'm not talking about a blue light special here.  I'm talking affordable Armani!

The selection in the store is sophisticated and fashion forward. Selections include hand selected seasonal pieces ranging from premium denim and stylish t-shirts to casual dresses, blazers, outerwear and a full spectrum of accessories.  But here is the best part, prices start at at $25 US.  Of course it's all lustworthy!  Above is one of my favorites, the Asymmetrical Ruffle Top with faux wrap and ruffle at the hem.
Because I know all my readers are not here in Los Angeles,  A|X Armani Exchange has generously offered me some gift cards to give to my readers in the United States.

Pictured: The Get: A|X Armani Exchange's Gift Cards (photo courtesy of Armani Exchange.)

I have two gift cards for $100.00 each, that can be used in store, or to shop online at A|X Armani Exchange.  Two lucky readers will be able to shop for free for a selection of  Men's and Women's clothing + accessories.  But wait there is more!  I will be giving out a wonderful runner up prize.

Pictured:  Runner-up prize: Emporio Armani  Diamonds Parfum (photo courtesy of Armani )

One lucky reader (and this can be someone outside the US)  will win a new bottle of Emporio Armani's DIAMONDS Parfum.  The Parfum was given to me when I attended the Emporio Armani in store fashion show at the Beverly Hills store.  It's a fantastic scent. The scent retails at Bloomies for $58.00.  DIAMONDS was created by perfumer Thierry Wasser. The fragrance is categorized as a gourmand floral, featuring top notes of lychee and raspberry; middle notes of rose, freesia and lily of the valley, and a base of vetiver, cedar wood, patchouli and vanilla.  I personally love it, it's very light and I like the unique floral and raspberry notes.

Pictured: the "RED HOT" Tee is one of the special series Emporio Armani and (PRODUCT) RED T-shirts for spring-summer launched this month. (photo courtesy of Emporio Armani )

If you have seen the May issue of French Vogue (with Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep and Penelope Cruise), you'll note that the new Emporio Armani (RED) T-shirts were featured on the cover. The stretch cotton T-shirts, which together with eyewear and watches are now part of the Emporio Armani (PRODUCT) RED collection, are white with short sleeves and a ‘V’ neck.  With a body hugging fit, they have two different serigraph prints on the front with the words ‘(RED) HOT’.   Part of the profits from the Emporio Armani RED products go to the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.   Oh Mr. Armani, how do I love thee, let me count the ways: A|X Armani Exchange, Emporio Armani Red, DIAMONDS parfum and those outlet stores too!

Now, here's what you need to do to try to win an A|X Armani Exchange gift card for $100.00 US or the DIAMONDS parfum. To enter to win, just leave a comment here by May 9th, and let me know what you would buy if you could go shopping at A|X Armani Exchange for FREE!  Please leave your email address like so (giorgio at yahoo dot com) in your comment so we can reach you if you are the lucky winner.
Let me hear from you! This one is too good to miss!

Launching May 20: Fashion Against AIDS collection at H&M

Pictured: Dresses from H&M's  Fashion Against AIDS collection (photo courtesy of H&M)

Despite outrage earlier this year over H&M allegedly dumping clothing, the brand has been cleaning up their act with some good deals.  On May 20th, H&M is launching a "Fashion Against Aids" collection with 25 percent of sales to be donated to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects. The collection, as befitting it's namesake, is rather somber looking.  Don't expect bright colors, or prints like those in the Garden Collection. The black and white print dresses above are an example of the collection's rather austere look.  There is a lot of denim, black and white, and some animal prints.  Note that the collection will be part of the Divided line, so it will be junior sized.  The collection will be for both girls and boys and offers clothes and accessories plus tents and sleeping bags.  As with all of H&M's house brand collections, the prices are reasonable. For women, there are maxi dresses, bohemian looking wrap blouses, and even a short sequined jacket.  I'll definitely have to give it a look when it arrives in stores.  I'll be anxious to see if the fashions are as good as the cause they support.

Pictured: These Boho Chic wrap tops from H&M's upcoming collection will be priced at USD 24.95, GBP 14.99 and EUR 19,95 (photo courtesy of H&M)

The Recessionista Reviews Zac Posen for Target

Pictured: My local Target, freshly stocked with  Zac Posen today.

In case you haven't heard, Zac Posen's Target collection is in stores today.  Armed with extra strength Java, I headed out to my local store to check out the goods.  Many of the dresses (included the ones I found posted early via the web) had already sold out by 7 am PST, but there was plenty on the racks at my local store. Here's what I saw on the racks, tried on and liked for delivery style + value. Regarding the sizing, not everything runs small, that is a bit of misinformation in my opinion. The bottom line is that some dresses are cut to be form fitting and really skim the body.  These are the safety-pin gown, the snap tape dress, and the two piece ruffled dress.  For those pieces, I would say, yes, experiment with the sizes.  I heard women in store saying they had to size up in those styles.  The rest of the collection is more true to size, and you don't have to be a size 0, 2 or 4 to look good in the clothes.

Pictured: The Zac Posen Snape Tape Dress is one of the more form fitting pieces, it's also quite short.

First up, if you are getting ready for prom, good news, some of these dresses will be great for you.  A good value is actually the two piece ruffled dress. Although it's priced at $80.00 it's really a 2 for 1.  The skirt with the little ruffles is detachable from the straight lined, strapless, boned bodice dress.  I preferred the dress in black with the midnight blue detachable skirt, as the two colors together were striking. The dress also comes in red.  If you can wear it, or have something to wear it to, this is a good looking dress.  Here's the inside of the dress held by helpful fashionista Stacie.

Here's the same dress with the detachable midnight blue ruffled skirt attached.

Pictured: The two piece dress, with the detachable midnight blue ruffle skirt on.  Price $79.99 US.

I liked the Safety Pin dress, but I don't have the occasion to wear a dress with a full train like that.  Also, the print does look a little louder in person. You have to be bold to carry it off.  Again, it might make a very cool prom dress, or special evening out dress.  It is already sold out on line.   I bought the scarf with the saftey pin print on a cream background for $24.99.  I think it's a good way to sport some color, and dress up an existing wardrobe piece.   I liked the Tie Dye Tack dress, but I felt it was too much like a swimsuit cover-up or a big tee shirt.  As for the Chambray Blue tie dress, I have no words. Ditto the Chambray Bermuda Shorts. Nothing special there.

For my own wardrobe, I  bought the Black Sweater Dress because I like the off-the shoulder style, and the flattering fit. You can be a little curvy , and this will still be flattering in my opinion.  Also, for $50.00, you will get more wear out of this Little Black Dress that the gown, the two piece dress, or the Floral Print Brocade dress.  The Sweater Dress can be dressed up with good pearls or great costume jewelry for a very rich look. The off-the shoulder neckline is what makes it distinctive, and it really reflects Posen's style and higher end designs.  For the same reason, I bought the Tuxedo Body Suit in black & white knit.  I love the flattering fit, and it will go nicely with the Stella McCartney Tuxedo Jacket already hanging in my closet.

Pictured: This tuxedo body suit looks much better in person than online.  It looks more like a sweater, than a top and is sweater weight. It's already sold out on Target.com.

The Polka Dot Print dress is darling with the bright trim around the seams for accent. It's just a bit low cut, and short, so it's a matter of personal taste. The Sailor Dresses are attractive, but probably not for everyone.  No surprise, they look very different on the rack than they do in pictures of it worn by Nicky Hilton :) The colors are bold, and the edge stitching around the neckline is a zig-zag surge stitch.  Personally, that is not for me. Although I like the design of the neckline, and flutter sleeves, I'm not wild about the print and the way it's made. Although it's only $39.99,  you can find more attractive designer dresses, for that price.

Pictured: The top of the Sailor Print Dress.

I did like a lot of the tops and shirt in the collection, especially the Polka Dot Print Pleated shirt ( I just don't want to iron it!)  I didn't buy the tees, as I didn't like the mark of Zoro big Z branding on them.  I don't like to wear the designer's logo/label on my chest. They got my money, I don't need to be a walking billboard too: )  On the swimsuits, they are er, interesting.  With the exception of the Gold Halter suit, the fabric is pretty skimpy.  The other one piece swimsuits are cut low in the front, and down to the crack in the back. For me, these are not suits you really want to swim in. Too bad, because I liked the tie-dye print.

Pictured: The Red Moto Red Leather Jacket with lots of Zippers is approximately $200.00.

Finally, on the Red Leather Jacket, I just don't know.  The piece is cut small, and it is priced at $199.99, the top price in the collection.  I have a problem paying that much for anything from Target. The Tuxedo jacket, pants and Brocade Floral Dress were not on display at my local Target.  If you saw them, leave a comment and let me know what you think.  My fellow shopper Stacie had gotten the Brocade Floral Dress and thought it was pretty great, even though it was almost $80.00. (later, I heard from her via Twitter that the zipper on that dress was difficult to pull up. Watch for the zipper ease on that dress.)

Bottom line, there are some good pieces (and some misses) in the Zac Posen for Target collection.  The prices are higher than some of the  previous collections, but it's certainly more inventive and better made than you might expect.  Especially given the quality of some Target Go collections.  Just be mindful when you do your shopping that you are not impulse buying, just because it's Zac Posen and he is a fashion rock star.  Not everything here is going to work for you, or be something you will wear regularly.

Zac Posen Target Advance Web Peak: Early Listings Online

Pictured: This Zac Posen Polka Dress is already online with a price $39.99

I've been getting some reader mail and Tweets today about the Zac Posen for Target collection.  There is definitely a lot of enthusiasm from readers looking to snag some Zac for less.  I haven't seen any of the pieces yet, so I will be at my local Tar-jay in the am to get a first look like the rest of you! I don't live in NYC, so I was not able to attend the pop-up show.   Here is what I know about the line, plus a few tips to help you get what you want, from a web savvy fashionista moi.

Call me intrepid, but some pieces like the Polka-Dot Print Dress are already, say we say, discoverable online.  A few Google searches, and there they are, along with reader reviews. Google, is a fashion CIA.  Wonder how it happens  that there are already user reviews posted when the stuff is not yet available to the public on Target.com? The  first review from user name "Love the Bullseye" does sound real.  It's just odd that it's already there. The reader review from this user on the Polka Dot Dress confirms what I have heard from shoppers in NY, sizing for the line run small and hemlines are high.  Some bloggers advised that you should order up a size, as your regular size may not fit. The dress is not available yet for order, but the description notes in will be in 2 weeks.  This may be a place holder until the final web page goes up later. :) Watch this space.

Also already online is the Safety Pin Gown, with surprise, and another early review by Target user "Love the Bullseye." She says," This is a full-length evening dress with tailoring similar to Zac Posen's couture gowns. It has a very sexy, slinky, figure-hugging fit with a slight flare at the bottom of the skirt, and a small train in back. The shape of the shoulder straps helps balance out your figure if you are a little pear shaped like me, and the keyhole opening in back draws the eye upwards. The pattern is fun and unexpected. The cons: It runs a little small and is not very forgiving in the hip area. Plus it's a little long; I'm 5'5" and it drags on the floor in the back. But I put it on and my husband said "wow!", so I'm keeping it! It's that great.' " Again, I have to wonder how she was able to leave such an early review, when the online listings are not well known yet. Very detailed too.

Pictured: The bodice of the Zac Posen for Target Floral Brocade Print Dress features a zipper at the bust.  It's strange that the zipper is placed to the side of the bow. The price is $74.99.

If you search for reviews by "Love the Bullseye",  you'll see she also gave an early review on the Brocade Print Floral Dress, noting that she loves the dress, but ,"The only weird thing about this dress is that there is a functional zipper over the right bust. Can't say I really have a use for breastfeeding formal wear, but whatever. It's a small complaint on an otherwise gorgeous dress."   Yeah, that is pretty wierd Bullseye lover.

Look for the rest of the collection to show up online around 3 am EST.  If fact, I just checked and its all there (12:45 am PST/3:45 am EST).  Some items can be ordered now, but won't ship for two weeks. In store, look for it at Target's around the US about 8 am.  Prices on this collection are slightly higher than previous collections, so I'll be interested to see the quality.  More later.  Bon soir fashionistas!

Lane Byrant's Lingerie Commercial Racey Enough to be Pulled? I don't think so.

Have any you had the chance to see the Lane Bryant Lingerie Ad? It maybe hard to see since it's been banned by Fox and ABC.  I think it's pretty tame stuff.  Especially when you consider the ads Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian did for hamburger chains.  Remember Paris rolling around in suds at a car wash while eating a burger?  Or Kim in a negligee laying on a bed, biting into her salad suggestively? I have to agree with Lane Byrant's statement in their press release, " our ads were no more risque than those of Victoria's Secret." Ironically, the ads got bumped from appearing during "Dancing with the Stars." Go figure, considering how low cut and provocative the costumes of Pamela Anderson and some of the other dancers are.

If you haven't seen the ad , click above to see what you think.  I'm surprised there was any controversy about it at all. By the way, the whole line of Lane Bryant lingerie, called Cacique, is on sale right now for 40% to 50% off.  Good thing there are blogs to tell you about the details when TV commercials get censored :)

Vera Wang's Wedding Dresses Coming to David's Bridal

Pictured: A Vera Wang gown from a runway show, (photo from VeraWang.com)

Well, it's officical.  Vera Wang's beautiful, but pricey wedding dresses are coming to David's Bridal.  I first heard this on Twitter, but now it's official via statements form Vera and David's. Nothing will be ready until Spring 2011, so this is not budget friendly for Brides in 2010.   Here's the 411 from the official press release :

Vera Wang and David’s Bridal announce an exclusive partnership to launch a new bridal collection. The collection will consist of gowns and accessories for the bride with a later intention of expanding into bridesmaid dresses and shoes.  The collection will be available in the US in early Spring 2011 and in Canada by the end of 2011.  Consistent with David’s Bridal’s price points, the new collection of gowns will be priced under $1500.

Vera Wang states: “I am thrilled for the chance to bring my very specific vision to David’s Bridal, the biggest wedding retailer in America. The ability to grow my sphere of influence in the bridal world is both a huge creative and business opportunity and one I am so excited about. With this new challenge, I hope to speak with a level of taste and authority that will resonate with brides everywhere. This association represents the next logical step for someone who has spent 20 years building a relevant and respected bridal brand. I can’t think of a more strategic or promising time to grow a new segment of my business than now!”

Bob Huth, President and CEO of David’s Bridal says: “This exciting, new partnership will now enable us to serve even more of America’s brides, including those who could only dream of wearing a Vera Wang gown. We understand the importance of a bride’s special day, and we’re very proud to be able to complement the strength of our existing brands with an outstanding and exclusive collection by the most revered bridal designer in the world.”

Get Sarah Jessica Parker's Red Carpet Look for Under $100.00

Pictured:  Sarah Jessica Parker's Red Carpet look at the "Bravo's:Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" produced by her production company. (photo courtesy of People StyleWatch)

Sarah Jessica Parker looked elegant this month on the red carpet in this stunning cream dress with blue suede open toe wedges.  Her necklace was an oversized heart.  The draping of this dress is amazing. The shoes I've seen before at high-end department stores in the UK. Yes, those are Nicholas Kirkwood heels, and they retail for about 675 GBP (about 1,200 US)!  I covet the dress.  I don't know who the designer is, but I suspect it maybe a Lanvin.  If you're like me and you like this look, People StyleWatch has found a way to put the whole look together for about $100.00!  How good is that?  Here are the individual pieces.

Pictured: Sarah Jessica Parker's heart pendant and more for less than $100
(screenshot courtesy of People StyleWatch)

The shoes are from DSW, the dress is Lana Line, and the heart is Betsy Johnson from Lord & Taylor.  If you're not comfortable with such a large heart, and you want to spend a little more, you might upgrade the look with a Yummi Glass heart pendant.  To learn more, and find out where to buy, read the feature in People StyleWatch.

And in case you're wondering what SJP is producing for Bravo, it's called "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist", an hour-long creative competition series among contemporary artists (a/k/a maybe unknown artists.) It sounds like Project Runway for Artists as the show will bring together fourteen aspiring artists to compete for a solo show at a nationally recognized museum and a generous cash prize.

Project Runway Season Finale: Congrats to Seth Aaron but Love for Emilio

Pictured: A model walks the runway in Emilio Sosa's shimmering evening dress at the Project Runway Fall 2010 Fashion Show during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2010 (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

Did you watch the Project Runway season finale on Lifetime tonight?  I watched some of the show from the press lounge at New York Fashion Week back in Feb.  The winner was never announced.  However, I was wowed by Emilio Sosa's collection.  As he himself said, it was wearable and tasteful  There were great evening gowns like the one above, plus wonderful coats, and lots of color.  This is stuff I would love to see hit the racks.  And I am not the only one who thinks so.  Heidi Klum wore one of Emilio's dresses on the Red Carpet last night in LA. The BuzzBox blog reports that Heidi  wore Emilio's strapless gown.

Pictured: Heidi Klum in Emilio Sosa's gown from Fashion Week. (photo from the Buzz Blog)

If you watched the Project Runway finale tonight then you know that Seth Aaron Henderson was the winner. Congrats to Seth Aaron.  His collection was well done, and beautifully tailored.  His inspiration was German and Russian military.  While his collection was striking, I have to agree with Nina.  As she said, "it can  be borderline costumy."  Here's an example.  Check out the leather with the yellow plaid pants!

Pictured: A model walks the runway in Seth Aaron's plaid pants and coat from the Project Runway Fall 2010 Fashion Show during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2010 (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

However, there were Seth Aaron looks I loved.  Like this pantsuit below. I just think it might be hard for most women to wear that fabric pattern head to toe.  To see more of Seth Aaron's collection and designs, check Anne Bocci's Boutique. She is already selling some of his work and I like what she has on sale better than what I saw on Project Runway.

Pictured: A model walks the runway in Seth Aaron's plaid pantsuit from the Project Runway Fall 2010 Fashion Show during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2010 (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

Overall, I thought Seth Aaron's collection was uneven and I felt Emilio's pain.  How many women  will have the occasion to wear some of the looks from Seth Aaron. In contrast, I found Emilio was much more accessible.  What's wrong with have something rack ready on the runway? What did you think readers? Are you jonesing for some Russian/German military looks?

As for poor Mila, I have no words.  I did like her work in the earlier challenges, but I was underwhelmed by her final collection.

Louis Vuitton Earth Day Promotion is not a Sale

Pictured: Louis Vuitton's Earth Day promotion.

There was a lot of talk today on Twitter about Louis Vuitton's Earth Day promotion.  Some savvy shoppers got very excited, because they thought Louis Vuitton was having a 10% off sale for Earth Day.  I am here to tell you , Louis Vuitton is not having  a sale.  Louis Vuitton will never, ever have a sale. Personally, I believe the word sale is against the retail religion of LV.

To clarify, Lousi Vuitton will be giving 10% of their sales on Earth Day, April 22nd, to Global Green USA.  So I wonder how many LV lovers will get out their credit cards to shop tomorrow?  Imagine how much money they would actually raise to help Mother Earth if they did give a small discount on their bags.

Here's my LV shopping  "Imagine" sung to the tune of the John Lennon song.

Imagine if Louis Vuitton had a sale
It's easy of you try
No replicas below us
Above us only discounted real leather
 Imagine all the frugal fashionistas
Carrying Louis Vuitton today!
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope Louis Vuitton will join us
By offering more affordable handbags
And fashionistas and recessionista will live as one.

This is my LV prayer.  Imagine the energy that would be saved! No endless hours on eBay searching for deals.  No fake websites with silly replicas eating up web space and using energy.  Just imagine that!

Earth Day is April 22nd: An Eco-Style Savvy Fashion Report

Pictured: Richard Chai's Alternative Apparel  long sleeved, modal silk jersey Tee retails for $129.00

In case you haven't heard, this Thursday April 22nd is Earth Day.  Earth Day is recognized around the world. The day has been set aside to raise awareness for the environment and our precious resources.  For fashionistas, some great  deals will be going on to promote eco-friendly fashion and styles, which there is now quite a bit of.  Eco-style has come a long way from crunchy hemp based styles (of course, nothing wrong with that if you like the hip hemp look!)

Pictured: Alternative Apparel's Earth Day deal, good until May 30, 2010.

My favorite eco-friendly deal is from Alternative Apparel. What can I say? They got the fashion + the comfort +the right price.  It's an unbeatable combination. I love their super soft organic Pima cottons.  For earth day, shop Alternative online and use code CEARTH to save 15% of your order (note: offer ends 5/30/2010.)   Even more exciting, Alternative has partnered with Richard Chai and Jeremy Scott to create some stunning and luxuriously soft  jersey fabrics garments. The pieces are selling exclusively at Refinery29 Shops for the next 30 days. Richard Chai's Alternative Apparel tees are priced at just $69 for a short-sleeved tee or $129 for the long-sleeved flounce and flutter shirt. Check out the picture above of the Richard Chai silk jersey to see how absolutely gorgeous these pieces are!

Following are some other good deals that have shown up on The Recessionista's Radar. Remember, Mother's Day is May 9th.  You might find  a deal here that you would like to help you save on a gift for Mom.

Gilt Groupe will be offering a unique Earth Day celebration sale this Thursday, April 22nd with a portion of proceeds benefiting the National Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy. The “Eco Chic” sales will include designs from Loomstate, Matt & Nat, Leigh & Luca, Dr. Hauschka and EDUN. In addition, all items in the Gilt ‘Gift Tab’ will be green friendly, including organic totes and handbags, eco-friendly tees, soy candles, recycled scarves and Earth friendly make-up. Of note, the biggest item on sale within the Gilt ‘Gift Tab’ is gifting trees through American Forests; it’s a dollar per tree, with bundles selling at $15, $50, and $100. If you are not already a Gilt member, click here to join as my guest.

Fashion Forward with Designer Nicole Miller

Pictured: Designer Nicole Miller steps out after her runway show at New York Fashion Week.

Designer Nicole Miller has always been fashion forward from her cutting edge designs, to introducing one of the first lower-priced fashion lines. Nicole was one of the first designers to make her fashions accessible with a bridge line collection from JC Penney in 2005. This month marks a series of personal appearances by the designer in a few lucky US cities, just in time for Mother's Day.  One of these is a special benefit to help raise funds for  the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) in Nashville, Tennesse.  Nicole Miller will present her latest designs at at a special fashion show on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 7:30 to 10 p.m.

I had the opportunity to interview Nicole Miller before she heads out to meet the ladies that wear, and some who want to wear, her beautiful clothes.  I asked Nicole about her style, and how she would define it.  She thinks for a moment.  Ms. Miller categorizes her style as "Very fashion forward, avant-garde, made from  unusual special fabrics with an element of surprise to them." She tells me this vision translates to her entire line.

"“I was originally known for the Little Black Dress" she notes. "Through the years it's been the evolution of the Little Black Dress,  with a very body conscious, very flattering design.”  One look at her current collection and you see what she is talking about.   Her line includes a series of amazing Techno Metal dresses, with strategically placed tucks to achieve her figure flattering, body skimming style.  The style is a red carpet favorite and I've seen it worn at many fashion and entertainment events in Los Angeles.

Of her unique line of metal like dresses, Ms. Miller considers her metal dress the "must have" piece in her current line.  She tells me, "I think I am the only one doing that, the only one using the fabric."  The fabric is a unique blend of polyester, metal, nylon, and elastane.  I had to ask if the metal dresses will ever been part of her bridge line collection.  Unfortunately, the answer is no since the unique fabric can't be reproduced for budget prices.

Pictured:  A Nicole by Nicole Miller Faux-Wrap Print Dress from JCP, with a 4.5 rating out of 5 by customers, is currently on sale for under $40.00. (picture from JCPenney.com)

For lower priced looks, check out Nicole by Nicole Miller at JC Penney.  She laughs when I tell her she may have been the first recessionista designer with a low priced collections in stores five years ago. "Has it been that long?" she says. Ms. Miller is clearly proud of her JC Penney collection. She notes, "It's been successful since it launched and continues to be successful."  The line features both casual and work wear offering printed dresses and tops, plus jackets and pants.  Her "Smart Suit" designed for JC Penney in 2007 was heralded as the first machine washable suit.

Whether you choose Nicole Miller or Nicole Miller for JC Penney, Ms. Miller's fashion forward vision and flattering fit is readily apparent.  Of current style trends, the designer tells me she likes leggings, chunky shoes, platform shoes, and tunics.  "It’s a great time to dress," she notes.  Especially if you have some Nicole Miller in your closet! :)

If you're interested in meeting the designer and learning more about her fashion, check her out at these April events:

April 22nd Miami, FL at the Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour store
April 27th, Nashville, TN at the Nicole Miller fashion show for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Grace Kelly Exhibit Opens at the Victoria & Albert Museum: Classic Style Endures

A collection of Grace Kelly's clothing is on view in London at the Victoria & Albert Museum until Sept. 26th 2010.  The exhibit is simply called, "Grace Kelly Style Icon" and is sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels. How amazing that over 50 years since Grace achieved popularity as a film star, that her style still looks so fresh and modern.  In 1955 McCall's magazine said of Grace Kelly, " The thing that made her stand out is what we call 'style'."  Part of the exhibit is Grace's well worn and often carried Hermes "Kelly " Bag which she used to camouflage her pregnancy in 1956.  The Guardian UK reports that , "despite her high-maintenance image, Grace Kelly was surprisingly thrifty with her wardrobe. The signs of wear and tear make it clear she continued to carry the same handbag for many years – a sharp contrast to the habits of modern celebrities, who avoid wearing the same outfit twice."  The floral dress that Grace wore when she first meet Prince Rainer was not a couture dress, but a dress made from a McCall's easy to sew pattern.  Like Audrey Hepburn, Grace took good care of her clothes and wore them repeatedly.

I had the pleasure of seeing Grace honored earlier this year in Los Angeles at the Rodeo Walk of Style. When I look back at old Grace Kelly photos, or watch her in To Catch a Thief or Dial M for Murder, I think of her beautiful accessories and her simple strand of pearls. There are many things today's fashionista on a budget can learn from Grace.  Grace's fashion lexicon was simplicity of style and classic pieces. No matter what she wore, she remained the focal point. When I think of Grace's style, her look can be emulated either with well chosen pieces from a discounter or with luxury fashions from or a high-end store.   Whether you are a fashionista or recessionista, Grace Kelly's style is priceless. Her style included a colorful scarf around the neck, a simple string of pearls, shirt dresses with cinched waists and capri pants with ballet flats.

If you can't make it to London for the exhibit, then visit the Victoria & Albert museum online to experience her style through the magic of the Internet. Designer treasures in the exhibit feature movie studio designers like Edith Head, and high fashion names like Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. If you can make it to London, check out the special deals at The Connaught Hotel (where Grace stayed when she was in London) and their special Grace Kelly cocktails. You'll also see Grace on the May issue of Vanity Fair magazine looking like she posed in 2010 for the cover.

The Recessionista Reviews Cynthia Vincent and Eugenia Kim for Target

Pictured: Cynthia Vincent for Target, selling briskly at my local store today

Today is the day that Target launched accessory collection by Cynthia Vincent (shoes) and Eugenia Kim (hats).  Much of both collections is already sold out online at Target.com.  And it is selling briskly in-store at Targets. Fortunately, when I cruised in to my local store today, their was still enough stock left of both to review and evaluate.  There are pluses and minuses for both collections, but the bottom line is these lines are literally disposable summer/spring fashion.  Disposable because they are not built to last (especially the hats made with paper or paper blends) but will provide a little dose of fashion for a low price.

The big sell-out du jour is of course the Cynthia Vincent Gladiator Wedge Sandals in yellow and brown. The shoes themselves are steep, but the price is not at $29.99.  Since these wedges mimic a shoe that sells for approximately $180 US, it's no surprise that they are going quick.  If you still want a pair, check for them on eBay, where those who bought online are already reselling for a profit.  There are a few left in store.  I think they are fine for an event where you don't have to stand for a long period of time.  The style is designed to elongate the leg, and of course add height.  This is a case of if the shoe fits, and you can wear it, good for you.  Other choices in the line still on the racks include the Strappy Ring Heeled Sandals in black and the Strappy Ring Flat Sandals in Yellow and Black.  See the pictures below for a reality check.  The Strappy Ring Heeled Sandals are good looking, but they have a rather steep incline, so again, the question is, if you buy these, do you sacrifice your soles for your fashion soul?

Pictured: The Cynthia Vincent Strappy Ring Heeled Sandals in Black.  The shoes are made in China and are faux leather and thermoplastic rubber, retailing for $29.99.  These have a sleek look and I prefer them to the Gladiator wedges.

Pictured: Easier to walk in are the  Cynthia Vincent for Target Strappy Ring Flat Sandals in Yellow and Black.

I didn't buy any of the Cynthia Vincent Target shoes today.  The pair I really wanted, the ballet flat print, is a web only exclusive. Four shoes in the Cynthia Vincent line are web only exclusives.  That doesn't work for me, because I really do like to try shoes on and take an in store walk in them to see how I feel moving and even standing still in them.   What I did buy, and absolutely feel in love with, was a pair of the new Miss Trish of Capri sandals.  I don't know why Target has been so quiet about these.  For the price, they are worthwhile because of the unique detail work.

Pictured: My  Top Pick: the new Miss Trish Of Capri  Black Coral flat scandals with the Pearl and Starfish
embellishments for $24.99.

I don't know why there are no ads for the new Miss Trish line as their are for Cynthia Vincent.  My Target had the womens' Miss Trish as well as the girls' Miss Trish sandals.   To me, these look far more unique and chic than the various other pleather shoes showing on the Target aisles.

Pictured: Look for Miss Trish of Capri in the girls department at your local Target.

After perusing the shoes, I strolled over to the accessories area of the store.  That's where the Eugenia Kim hats were on display.  There was a small group of ladies gathered around to check out and try on the hats.  I'm pleased to see so many of us looking at hats as a fashion accessory again.  It's important to note that hats are not just a fashion statement, they are just about the best summer protector of your precious skin from the harsh and sometimes damaging rays of the sun.  Definitely , the biggest seller in the Eugenia Kim line is the Straw Fedora with plaid band.  The Fedora style comes in black, mint and straw with various bands.  These are cute and well priced, but for me, not nearly as functional as the other Kim hats. The Fedora provides little sun protection.  My favorite hats in the line for style, functionality and perfect face framing are the Straw Cloche in Gray Stripe (sold out online) and the Fedora in Tan with the Flower Applique.  Both are priced at $16.99.

Pictured: One of my favorites: the Eugenia Kim for Target Fedora with Flower Applique has a wider brim and more style than the straw fedoras with the fabric bands in the collection.  It's much more stylish for the price.   It is made from 88 % paper, and 12 % polyester.

Pictured: The full rack of Eugenia Kim hats at Target today, with my favorite fit the Straw Cloche in Gray Stripe
on the bottom. Some of the Fedoras are 100% paper.

The most interesting thing about the Eugenia Kim hats is their magic ingredient.  Wait for it. The hats are made from paper or materials blended with paper! So you can expect to wear this for 1 season.  For $16.99, what can you expect?  Target has to make this cheaply, market them and sell them.  I can't help but wonder if the hats that are 100% paper can be recycled after you wear them out? :)

If you stop by Target today, looking for the new Cynthia Vincent and Eugenia Kim collections, take a look at the old ones too for some deals and surprises.  My Target had plenty of Jean Paul Gaultier on the racks, reduced by 30%.  Watch Target.com, as once it's reduced in-store, the online store usually follows suit (now reduced online.)

Pictured: Jean Paul Gaultier for Target  is now on sale for 30% off.

Pictured: My local Target has restocked much of the Liberty of London line, including this cute floral tote.

If you dropped by Target today and picked up some Cynthia Vincent or Eugenia Kim, let me know what you think.  In my opinion, both lines offer some disposable, quick summer fashion.  They may not last long, but after all,  you get what you pay for.
