Giveaway: Peter Walsh's "It's All Too Much" Book and DVD from OfficeMax

Pictured: The downside of shopping and fashion is "closet clutter."

All good things must come to an end.  Sadly, the Memorial Day weekend is almost over.  Just a few more hours of holiday to go.  I have to give myself a small pat on the back today for doing a little Memorial Day cleaning and closet triage.  Tomorrow, I'll be giving away old items to some charities and Goodwill.  A few choice fashion tidbits will go on eBay to help pay bills or save for a vacation. Did any of you doing any reorganizing or "decluttering" over the weekend? Please tell me I am not alone in my shambolical housecleaning or my need to keep favorite clothing items draped on a chair for easy access rather than hanging in the closet.  I mean, it's so much easier to just go to the chair, and pick up an outfit, rather than open the closet and conduct a full scale search.

Pictured: Win a copy of Peter Walsh's book " It's All Too Much" by leaving a comment here on the blog.

Obviously, I only took "baby steps."  A couple months ago, OfficeMax was kind enough to give me a copy of Peter Walsh's ( Peter is a cleaning superstar who has been on TLC's Clean Sweep and Oprah. ) book and DVD called  "It's All Too Much."  Ironically, it was all too much for me at the time, and I never got around to doing a proper blog giveaway on it.  You know, it's that work thing :)  The book was properly saved in the special The Recessionista collection, a unique dust gathering place on the lower shelf of my coffee table.  In my fit of cleaning and new found vacation organization fervor, I have "liberated" the book from my own clutter. So one lucky reader will win the book and one lucky reader will win the DVD. It's a 2Fer! ( 2 for 1). Get ready to for tips, techniques and encouragement from expert Peter Walsh that will help you declutter every room of your home once and for all.  I mean why should Oprah get all the cleaning/decluttering help? Some of us non-celebrities need a cleaning intervention, right?

To enter to win, just leave a comment here by June 15th, midnight PST and let me know what your tips are for cleaning or organizing. Are you a procrastinator like me, or do you clean religiously? Inquiring minds want to know.   Please leave your email address like so (messy at yahoo dot com) in your comment so we can reach you if you are the lucky winner.

Tips from Avon's Jillian Dempsey and Target's Sonia Kashuk + Summer make-up picks

Pictured: The art of makeup: Silent Star Louise Brooks gets the beauty treatment.

Back in March I had the pleasure of attending the CEW Beauty event in Los Angeles featuring Jillian Dempsey, Global Creative Color Director, Avon and Sonia Kashuk, Creator, Sonia Kashuk Beauty for Target.  If you're not familiar with CEW, this is the organization for Cosmetic Executive Women, and they regularly sponsor events in Los Angeles (next event is June 15th)  and New York (next event is June 23) with great speakers on how to best use beauty products. Click here to check out their upcoming June events.

Jillian Dempsey and Sonia Kashuk are beauty innovators creating easily accessible and affordable beauty products. It was a great session offering both beauty and business tips from these experts. The event was sponsored by Redbook Magazine and moderated by beauty and kifestyle expert, Martha McCully.

Pictured: Avon's Global Creative Color Director, Jillian Dempsey at work.

Both women started by sharing their personal make-up philosophy. Jillian loves the possibility of change with makeup. For working women, it's an easy way to make a quick transformation using different make-up colors to go from work to going out. Sonia stressed that she likes "the gift of clean " and she believes less is more.

Jillian talked a bit about doing Oscar makeup and makeup  for  Red Carpet events.  She stressed, "It is  important to makeup the subject to represent the event."  But she warned that makeup artists should not be too heavy handed, even for Red Carpet events. Jillian should know, she has done make-up for Kate Winslet for Red Carpet events. I read that Kate Winslet was very pleased with the natural look that Jillian gave her.

Sonia Kashuk notes that she has been influenced by  working with models and transforming them for high-end shoots. However, she noted the difference between working with models, and everyday real woman who needs a different look. After all, part of fashion shoot is " illusional aspiration."

Pictured: Make-up Artist Sonia Kashuk bought the first affordable make-up collection to a big box retailer with her collection for Target.

Both Jillian and Sonia agreed that a make-up artist can  reach more people wtih a corporate sponsor. Jillian noted working with a business (like Avon) helps balance the creative with what is possible.  She would like to see more organics coming in to the makeup mixes, rather than synthetics. Following are some of the specific QAs both Jillian and Sonia answered on the CEW panel.
____________________________________________________
Q. Is it important to have a daily beauty routine?

Jillian : Yes, have a simple uncomplicated routine.  Take 5 minutes to do your makeup and touch it up as needed.

Sonia: Yes,  take 15 minutes each day. Women need education in this area and  it is something that is not taught. The online videos help but they need to be more simple.

Q.  What are some of the qualities you need to succeed?

Jillian: You need talent and perseverance,  nothing happens overnight. Magazines always wonder is it worth getting behind this person and staying behind them?

Sonia: I have been in Target now for 11 years, but it took time.  I agree, success doesn't happen overnight.  Nothing happens without initiation. With Target, I initiated the contact, by picking up the phone and calling them.  My advice is you have to been persistent.  If you try one thing that doesn't work, then  re-energize and hurdle again.

Q. Is there one essential product that you recommend for women?
Jillian: The Multi-Stick
(note: this is a multi-purpose stick for eyes, cheeks, lips and body. Nars makes one called The Multiple.)
Sonia: Foundation (note: check Sonia's Perfecting Luminous Foundation at Target)

Q. What about Social Media? Do you use it?
Jillian is not on social networks. She is mindful that networks allow everyone to give advice. Her approach is more traditional. Jillian uses magazines and interviews as her main form of  communicating. Her tips have been featured in Vanity Fair and Women's Wear Daily (WWD).

You can find some of Jillian's tips on the Avon website, as well as a great sale on her make-up going on now.  Click here to view the sale.

Sonia is on Twitter and is excited about learning more about Social Media. You can follow Sonia on Twitter @soniakashuk   She also has a  great blog on her website where she gives tips.  Click here to check it out. I like her Splurge vs. Steal tips on her blog, where she shows you the prices of various products and offers her recommendations.
 _____________________________________________________________________
At the event, I received some samples of the various makeup products discussed, and some not discussed.  Since the event I have been using them, and here are some of my favorites:

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Mascara.  I really like this because it has a dual-ended tube with a small brush at one end for separating and upliftinglashes, and then a bigger brush at the other end for applying mascara across all lashes.  It's pretty ingenious (in my humble opinion.)

Pictured: Jillian Dempsey for Avon Mascara.

Liz Earle Botanical Essence No. 1: Fragrance:  I love this light summer fragrance. The notes feature  bergamot, mandarin, bitter orange, lemon, cardamom, rose absolute, lavender, geranium, coriander, nutmeg, cedar, vetiver, tonka bean and patchouli. It is already released in the UK, but won't be available in the US until July.  I am waiting to buy some! I read that Avon recently acquired Liz Earle, so I look forward to buying the product from Avon.com
Pictured: Liz Earle Botanical Essence, a perfect light summer fragrance.

NYX Black Label Professional Make-up: This is way more makeup than I need for everyday use, but for going out on the town, it is super!  I am particularly enjoying the light summer lipsticks, like "Heiress." They have a pleasant taste and fragrance. The application is really smooth. Check out the full selection at NYX.  The products are free of animal testing, so props to NYX on being cruelty free.
Pictured: The NYX Black Label Lipstick is a nice touch for summer color.

I'm also sampling some of the Smashbox products and enjoying them.  I like their light summer colors and natural pallette. I received a Sonia Kashuk brush, but honestly, I need some practice to learn to use it effectively.  I tend to just use the brush that comes in the container with my beauty product. (Sonia's products have gotten good reviews on Target.com, for those who do use them.) Generally, I am too busy to reach for anything else. I'm all about the quick and easy beauty touch up, how about you readers?

If you're looking for more great beauty products (I haven't tried most of  these) check out the list of the 2010 CEW Beauty Awards winners announced last week in New York. Don't forget your summer sunscreen! :)

Sponsored Post: Trading Fashion for Furnishing using American Express Membership Rewards Points

Pictured: Chris Noth with is wife Tara Wilson at the Sex and the City 2 premiere in his John Lobb STAVELEY shoes.

Lately, I feel like I am walking in the shoes of Mr. Big, actor Chris Noth, in the Sex and the City 2 movie.  Have any of you seen the film? I saw it this week at a special Los Angeles screening, and I loved it! See it with one of your best girlfriends soon.  Not to give too much away, but in the film, Mr. Big falls deeply in love with a state of the art LCD flat screen TV.  Apparently Big has a love of old movies like, "It Happened One Night" and  old Cary Grant comedies. Carrie wonders is she trading fashion for furnishings by spending time at home with Big watching the big screen.  It's an interesting question, and one I have been pondering for a while!  Earlier this month, American Express granted me 300,000 membership rewards points. But the points were to be used for redecorating my home entertainment area, not for splurging on fashion finds.  While, it has been a little tough to avert my eyes from the fashions and the jewelry that the program offers, I was inspired by Big's love of the flat screen TV to finally break down and order a new TV using 135,000 Membership Rewards points.  Yes, a new love affair is about to begin!  Check out the new Samsumg 32'in LCD TV I ordered. Membership does indeed have it's privileges. Depending on where you buy this TV, the prices range from $449.00 to $600.00, so buying it using Membership Rewards points is a good deal.

Pictured:  Mi Amour:  This is my new Samsung TV ordered with Membership Rewards is "Big-Worthy."

Although I won't be installing this new TV in the bedroom as Mr.Big did, I think it will lead to more old time movie watching, DVD and entertainment events at home.   Entertaining at home sounds like a good way to save money and entertain on the chic n' the cheap.  The TV will probably christened over a few Cosmos as I plan to invite some of my best girlfriends over to watch "Sex and the City" 1 once it arrives. This is worth celebrating, as I say good bye to my old TV with state of the art, built in VHS player. I have had Membership Rewards since 1994, but this is the first time I have used them for electronics.  I had no idea they offered such a great catalog of TVs, stereos and other home entertainment items.

If you're starting to think about Father's Day gift giving, and you are an American Express Membership Rewards Member, you might want to check out all the deals that they are offering on Electronics and Gadgets for Father's Day (June 20th) gift giving.  If you are already a member, check out the monthly specials on the Membership Rewards points.  Yes, American Express actually has sale items on Membership Rewards, where the amount of points needed to buy something are reduced. Check out the promotion running now until June 20th to get 5 X the amount of membership rewards points when you shop online at Bonusmall.com. Below is a sampling of some of the merchants you can shop at to get the points. More details are available on the Membership Rewards site.

As for Mr. Big's  John Lobb STAVELEY shoes, well you could buy those too with Membership Rewards points by cashing in points for a gift card at Bergdorf Goodman where the shoes, and other Sex and the City  featured fashion items are sold.  Just fyi, 10,000 points can be cashed in for a $100.00 Bergdorf card.  It's good to know, right?  I am already saving my points for my next shopping trip to New York (probably in New York when I attend Blogher.)

Meanwhile, it's all about the TV and my new home entertainment center.  I may even plan a Sex and the City marathon party.....the ideas are endless! Woman can not live by fashion alone (although it sure helps! :)

Memorial Day Weekend Deal: The Original Norma Kamali Swimsuit for $98.00

This is almost too good to be true! Sucha deal.  A sale on Norma Kamali swimsuits just showed up on my radar system. I just ordered the Norma Kamali original Swimsuit ( as seen in Vogue, Sex and the City, and Mamma Mia) for $98.00 USWord: This is not the Walmart version.  This was a special offer that I received today in the mail, and hey, I pointed and click right over to NK and ordered one in Black.  This is The Recessionista way, me first, then everyone else.  As my colleague B Caddois used to say, "If I can't help myself, then I can't help anyone else!' :) Yeah, that's right, I got greedy with the savings. I had to order first before I told anyone else.  But now the secret is out.  NK swimsuits usually retail for about $300.00 USD.  Grab it while you can! :)

Heidi Klum for A Pea in the Pod and Memorial Day Savings

Pictured: Project Runway's Heidi Klum at the Beverly Hills "A Pea in the Pod" store event last night. (photo courtesy of A Pea in the Pod.)

Last night one of the world's most glamorous, and sometimes glamorously pregnant women, Heidi Klum,  stepped out on the town in Beverly Hills at A Pea in the Pod on Beverly Dr.  Heidi was there to show off her line of maternity clothes for A Pea in the Pod called Lavish.  The uber busy Heidi has two maternity collections: Lavish by Heidi Klum for A Pea in the Pod and Loved by Heidi Klum for Motherhood Maternity. If you haven't seen it, Lavish  is a very good looking line of maternity clothes, most for under $100.00.  As you might expect, there is nothing frumpy about maternity wear from the Project Runway producer and host. Check out the Lavish Sleeveless Sequin Maternity Tank to see what I mean.  Too bad Tim Gunn was not on hand to lend his opinion on which clothes "worked." :)  I really wanted to ask Tim his opinion on the collection. Word to Tim, please don't spend all your time in New York celebrating with John Bartlett when you are needed here in Los Angeles!

Actress Danica McKellar joined Heidi at the event and was wearing the A Pea in the Pod’s nautical blue sleeveless charmeuse trim dress.  This little dress is so cute, there should be a non-maternity version of it.

Pictured: The Wonder Year's Danica McKellar rocks A Pea in the Pod dress at the Beverly Hills store. (photo courtesy of A Pea in the Pod.)

Pictured: Bones' Marisa Coughlan in A Pea in the Pod ensemble at the Beverly Hills store.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was Marisa Coughlan's barely pregnant look in her A Pea in the Pod charcoal grey scoop neck top with black beaded draped neckline paired with J-Brand’s Secret Fit Belly 5 Pocket Legging Maternity Jeans.  She looks amazing!

If you're looking for some well-priced maternity clothes with an touch of glamour, check out the sale at A Pea in the Pod online  today. Today (5/27) is the last day to receive a bonus 10% already reduced merchandise. Check it out for a bargain.

A Pea in the Pod  has dressed clients such as Heidi Klum, Nicole Richie, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rebecca Romijn, Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts, Salma Hayek, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cate Blanchett and more. A Pea in the Pod styles can be found in all A Pea in the Pod and Destination Maternity stores.

The AAFA American Image Awards Honor John Bartlett, Steve Madden, Fern Mallis; GAP Inc., and Shopbop.com

Tonight in New York the 32nd Annual AAFA American Image Awards are taking place.  The awards are special, and the invitation above is absolutely breathtaking.  I love it!  Even more special than the awards and the fabu invite is the fact that the awards benefit Autism Speaks.  Since someone I love, my little nephew, has Autism, I hope a lot of money is raised tonight to fight this mysterious disease that is on the rise. Autism is becoming a worldwide epidemic. I applaud the AAFA for raising money for this cause.

Congrats to all the fashion honorees, especially my chum from Cincinnati, John Bartlett who has been named Designer of the Year.

Pictured: Designer John Bartlett, AAFA American Image Awards' Designer of the Year.

John is a really creative designer.  His menswear has the most beautiful, classic lines.  And of course, I am thrilled that he is returning to design women's clothes.  Big Hug to John from The Recessionista.  John says, via Twitter, "Super happy and honored" to be named Designer of the Year.

Other award winners include:

  • The Fashion Maverick Award : Fern Mallis, Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion (you may have seen her on Project Runway.  She is  a key component of NY Fashion Week). I love that she has spoken out about some of the scary skinny models at fashion week.
  • The Retailer of the Year Award: GAP, Inc. This is a big win for Patrick Robinson and his design vision.  If you haven't checked lately, the Gap's Collection of American Women Heritage shirts is almost all sold out.  I waited too long to order!
  • The Brand of the Year Award : Steve Madden. Classic shoe styles  for men and women.
  • The E-Tailer of the Year Award : Shopbop.com.  This site literally has just about everything all in one place.  They have style profiles, lots for great designers and a special section under $100.00.  Another good recessionista pick!

What do you think readers? Do you shop these brands or stores?

WOOT WOOT! Norma Kamali to receive Honorary Doctorate from Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)

In my opinion, Norma Kamali is a fashion icon and an innovator.  That's why I am so pleased to see her be honored with an Honorary Doctorate from her Alma Mater , New York's Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) tomorrow, May 25th at 10:00 am EST.  I'll be trying to watch the presentation tomorrow via the magic of the Internet.  Yes, the ceremony will be broadcast from Radio City Music Hall from fitnyc.edu/commencement.  I'm giving Norma a big virtual "Woot! Woot!"  from Los Angeles.

Last year, The New York Times called Ms. Kamali  "a designer for our times."  I couldn't agree more, from her amazing line of swimsuits, to her sleeping bag coat, to the terrific all in one tops and dresses, this is one designer who is never boring, always surprising and makes you feel good.  To me, feeling good in the clothes is the magic ingredient.   When I was a struggling college girl, I saved money from waitressing jobs to pay for a Norma Kamali dress ( I used a layaway plan.)  Although I was broke most of the time back then, that dress made me feel like a million dollars!  I just adored it.  Today, my little niece doesn't have to save to own a Norma Kamali, she can buy a lower priced one on eBay or even at Walmart.  There is only one word for that.  Brillant.  And that is Norma.  She is in the vanguard as a designer and a marketeer.  Her love for technology has brought her wonderful designs to a whole new Internet savvy audience.

FIT is honoring Kamali, who graduated from the school with a degree in fashion illustration for her long career and her talent. Norma Kamali is such a "natural" that she started designing and sewing in the 1960s without ever having made a pattern! The award honors her many design innovations,  from her museum-collected fashion pieces, to her use of  technology to present her fashion collections online, and later sell them on the web. Nina Garcia, fashion editor at Marie-Claire, will present the award to Norma.

Pictured: My virtual congratulation bouquet for Norma Kamali: Congratulations NK, there are not enough roses for you.

Congratulations Madame Kamali! Enjoy your special day at FIT. You worked hard for it, and have inspired so many of us with  your creativity. Bravo!

The Recessionista Reviews A|X Armani Exchange: Style, Value + Service

Pictured: My top pick from Armani Exchange, my new off the shoulder gold Lurex sweater with drawstring waist, priced at $78.00 USD. (photo courtesy of Armani Exchange from their website.)

A few weeks ago, I went shopping at the new A|X Armani Exchange store on Robertson in Los Angeles.  I entered the store in stealth mode to do a review for the blog and was pleasantly surprised by two things that are becoming increasingly rare in the overcrowded budget fashion field: 1) style and 2) customer service. These qualities are becoming as rare as blue eggs on Sunday as my recessionary journey through fashion's bridge lines continues.  The big box retailers, like Target,  bring in designers, but in my opinion the quality pales in comparision to the craftsmanship of Armani's  A|X  line.  Make no mistake, there are still touches of   Armani in this lower priced line.  I noticed the draping of the blouses, the cuts that flatter a women's curves and the actual 1/2 in to 5/8 in seams on garments, not just serge stitched seams sewn together over lapping edges inside the garments.  The cardigans and jackets have stylish buttons real tailoring. Armani gave me a $50.00 gift certificate to do my shopping, but I spent and extra $30.00 on the above pictured sweater, which I fell in love with .  Throughout my shopping experiences, a live sales person was actually available to help me.  She assisted me by bringing in different styles and sizes to the fitting room.  I do recommend trying on the  A|X Armani pieces in store if you have the chance. Some of the garments are form fitting, and you may wish to go up a size, and others run roomy, so you'll want to go down a size.  I like that.  The patterns and sizing fit the individual styles of the garments.  There is no "cookie cutter" uniform sizing here. I went down a size in the Gold Lurex sweater I purchased.  The T-shirts were more form fitting, and I took my regular size in those. The jeans and pants looked more form fitting.

Pictured: Another look I love, the AIX Jeweled Collar Dress for $130.00 USD.  It's a great summer style.  (photo courtesy of Armani Exchange from their website.)

Overall, I was really impressed by the selection and styles at Armani Exchange.  When you consider you can buy something for under $100.00 and that a sales person will help you (if you shop in-store,) well, that is pretty incredible. (Especially when you consider that some of the  dresses by Zac Posen for Target were $79.99 and in my opinion, not near the quality of  A|X). The store also has sale items, with many pieces as low as $39.00 USD.   There are great styles for both men and women, just take your time to shop the old fashioned way, and try on a variety of garments in various sizes, as there is sales staff there to help you. The shopping environment is pleasant, so you don't need to hurriedly rush through the racks grasping for the best deal and hoping you grab it before someone else takes it.   If there is no brick and mortar store (there are 178 stores around the world)  near you, then do shop online and check out some of the online exclusives.  I was ready to buy the amazing Spray Paint short sleeved shirt in person, until I saw that a longer sleeved version was exclusively available on the  A|X website. You can't believe how beautiful the colors are on this in person.  It's really striking. Definitely lust worthy.  This shows what a great designer can do when they use a T-Shirt as their canvas.  No gift card necessary to entice me to buy this one.

Pictured:  I love the vibrant colors on this shirt.  I tried on the short sleeve version in store, but decided to order the long sleeved version instead, which is an online exclusive.  Summer hasn't really started in California yet! (photo courtesy of Armani Exchange from their website.)

I like that the online  A|X Armani Exchange store accepts PayPal.  That is a nice alternative for those who don't have credit cards, or who don't wish to incur finance fees.

My only complaint about the store on Robertson is the blasting music and in-store DJ.  The throbbing beat does not enhance the shopping experience, it just brings on a headache.  However, I can endure loud muzak for some amazing garments that are well priced, and offer real, classic Armani style.

P.S: . I've announced the winners of my  A|X giveaway.  All the winners have been contacted via email, so check your in-box if you entered! Readers, you have great taste, I loved reading your style picks!!

Sex and the City 2: The Looks for Less

The fab foursome is on the way back, when Sex and the City Part Two hits theatres on May 27th.  According to Fandango, ticket sales for this one are out pacing sales for the first movie. In my opinion, this should be no surprise.  First, we love these four characters and the story of their friendship.  Second, watching them on the bigscreen in their millions of dollars (per website Shine) of designer duds is perfect escapist fare in the midst of the Great Recession.  Just as movie goers in the Depression lined up to see Garbo, Harlow and Lombard in their fabulous studio gowns and costumes, today's movie goers want to escape into the couture fantasy of Carrie, Miranda , Samantha and  Charlotte.  As you can see from the picture above, each character has their own individual fashion style.  Here's how I would categorize their styles:

Carrie-- A mix of couture, Vintage Vogue and Boho Chic. Her style is a complete fantasy.  You won't see the average woman dressing like Carrie Bradshaw.
Miranda-  A look that fits today's working mother, suits and separates for women, and casual at home.  She also wears some great dresses that can go from the office to an evening out.  I would shop for Miranda at Loehmann's.  They've got great lawyer suits for less, and stylish dresses.
Samantha-  A look that is body baring, and full of bling with lots of embellishments at the shoulders and on the neckline. The character goes where many fashionistas dare not tread with thigh high skirts, and cleavage baring tops.  Discreet is not a word in the Samantha Jones style vocabularly. Big earrings and studded belts are some of her favorite accessories.  Sky high heels and designer bags are also hallmarks of her style.
Charlotte- A mix of Park Avenue chic and preppy style. Charlotte has evolved from a Talbots/Lily Pulitzer look to more of a Marc Jabcobs/ Saks Fifth Avenue style.  Of all the character's styles, her look is my personal favorite.  She reminds me of a modern day Audrey Hepburn.  I envision her wearing a lot of Milly and Tiffany jewelry.

So, if you like these styles, or just love the fantasy of them, where can you go to get the looks for less? Well, a number of places.  Carrie's look is all about mixing and matching. Vintage stores and consignment stores are a good place to look fro Carrie Bradshaw style. For Miranda and Charlotte, look for their looks on sales at department stores, Loehmann's and eBay.  As for Samantha, she is in a category all by herself.  Her sexy style maybe best found at boutiques stores like Fred Segal or Bergdorf's, and of course eBay. If you're in New York, check out Bergdorf's windows this week to see Sex and the City style.  Click here to see the windows on the Bergdorf  5th/58th blog.

An Interview with Los Angeles Designer Lauren Elaine

Pictured: A full length Lauren Elaine gown, the updated Little Red Riding Hood look, complete with wolf. (Photo, Press Photo- All Rights Reserved. Copyright Stefhan Gordon. LAFashionWeek.com, photo provided with permission by Lauren Elaine.)

I'm feeling very proud of our Los Angeles community of designers, bloggers and social media experts after attending the Los Angeles Chapter of Fashion Group International's “What’s Next in Social Media?” meeting last night. Sometimes people forget how much great fashion and fashion collaboration is coming from the city of Angels.  That's why I wanted to spotlight an LA Designer on the blog today, Lauren Elaine.  I interviewed Lauren Elaine following her recent LA Fashion Week show at the Key Club.  I loved all the vintage touches from her collection and the very feminine looks.

Lauren Elaine says her  overall mission as a designer is recreating the "princess-archetype" for the modern woman. For the Los Angles based designer, her Fall 2010 collection was a chance to explore a slightly darker, edgier side with a coquettish twist.  For her LA Fashion Week show, Lauren took inspiration from the classic tale of "Little Red Riding Hood."  The designer worked to take traditional, very feminine looks and give them a tasteful, folksy edge. The new collection still features the classic vintage shapes of past collections, but in such bold fabric choices as black metallic animal print brocades, rich jewel-toned silks, antique laces, and in shapes with exaggerated bell sleeves, sharp asymmetrical ruffled necklines, and mini baby doll strapless cocktail dresses.  As with past collections, designer Lauren Elaine favors silks and silk chiffons.

Here's is my interview with the designer.

  What is your design perspective?
"My basic goal as a designer has always been to create uniquely feminine, regal clothing that enhances a women's beauty and draws attention without being distasteful or revealing too much. Too me, there is nothing more alluring than a little air of mystery- and I always try to design pieces that catch the eye by enhancing the woman wearing them- not exposing her.  "

What are your price points for your Black Label line?
The Black Label price range is very diverse- with more casual pieces ranging from $150 to $300 (US), and couture formal wear ranging from $400 to $600 (US) and up.  The Lauren Elaine label is entirely handmade in the USA, and employs vintage and couture sewing techniques to ensure exceptional quality and garment life.

Where can we buy your clothes?
The Lauren Elaine Black Label is carried at select high-end boutiques across the country, as well as online stores.  Launched in Oct. 2009, the label first debuted in Southern California and is carried at such local stores at La Maison de Fashion, Muse, Let's Go, Jane Doe, etc.

To get Lauren Elaine for less, look for the sales at La Masion de Fashion or online at Shopflick.com.  Check for Lauren Elaine by searching on eBay too, to find the look for less.

Lucky Magazine Brings a Summer Capsule Collection to HSN

Today is the second day that Lucky Magazine is featuring a designer shopping collection on the Home Shopping Network (HSN).  I read about the collection last week in Lucky Magazine when I was on a plane. It's certainly an interesting collaboration. The collection features Thread by Thread Social and F + C by Anna Corina. There is also costume jewelry from Gerard Yosca and Pade Vavra  plus sandal from La Victoire. Overall, I am underwhelmed by the offerings.  Although there are some attractive items on the sale block, the prices are not what I consider discount.

Pictured: My top pick from the Lucky collection is this Thread dress. (photo courtesy of HSN.)

My favorite item is the Thread 3/4 Sleeve Chiffon Dress, but it's a bit pricey at $80.00 US.   I saw Budget Babe's post on the Lucky collection, and I think she said the same thing about the overall price point for the items offered.  What do you think readers? Have you checked out the Lucky collection on HSN?

The Recessionista Accepts AJ Wright's Ultimate Shopping Challenge

Pictured: My favorite find from AJ Wright my new BCBG Ballet Slippers for $19.99, a savings of $30.00.

I'd never heard of AJ Wright until a few weeks ago when they emailed The Recessionists to say they were opening a new store in Norwalk, CA just north of LAX (Los Angeles Airport). AJ Wright invited me, and several other LA area bloggers (@mommymandy @mamaof3kids83 @rockinmama @mintcool @kariellen @adramaticmommy) in for a shopping challenge.  They gave each of us a $100.00 gift card and set us loose in the store to see what bargains we could find.   AJ Wright is not a household name in California as it is on the East Coast.  However, the store is part of the TJX (TJ Maxx and Marshall's ) family of companies and follows the same philosophy of offering name brands for less.  Tomorrow, May 20, a new AJ Wright opens in the greater Los Angeles area in Norwalk.  What can you expect to find there? Well, I am here to tell you , there are plenty of good deals in the store, however, you will need to spend some time digging for them. The store features brand-name family apparel and footwear, accessories, home essentials, giftware, cosmetics, fragrances,  toys scrubs, plus sizes, luggage, pet accessories and pet carriers plus books and food items. There is plenty of merchandise and it runs the gamit from high-end to low-end.  You have to be choosy when you shop there.  But with some patience, and time spent digging through the racks, here are some of the things you might find.  I have to admit, I didn't take as much time as I might have ordinarily have taken since I went on a weekday after work.  For maximum bargain hunting, I would recommend stopping in on a weekend.

Here are some of the deals I found, including of course my fabuless pink ballet flats from BCBG pictured above.

Name brand books, including a Patti LaBelle's cookbook, which I have been dying to have since I meet Patti and she told me about her chili and other recipes.  The book was only $7.99.  I've seen it on Amazon for about $25.00. There are also kids books and bestsellers on the racks.

All kinds of PC accessories including cooling stations for your PC and laptop pads for when you watch TV. These tools are invaluable to a blogger!  I stocked up on a laptop pad and plenty of memory sticks for all my blogging posts and images.  It's always good to have a back-up plan.  I also found a great carry case for my digital camera with just the right length shoulder strap (price was $4.99).
Name brand electronics from Philips, Emerson and more.  They have DVD players and CD players too.   These are good items to put on your list for Father's Day Gift Giving.  Other items to look for are cell phone headsets and iPad carry cases.

For fashionistas on a budget, there are some great handbags like this one from Nine West, but there are knock-offs too. Pick and choose carefully here. Beware of the bags with misspelled designer names on them.

The fashion accessories area includes ELF cosmetics, leading fragrances and some hair products.  I bought some good designer combs and and a high-tech eyebrow tweezer.

My final stop in the store was the gourmet food section.  They had plenty of gourmet cookies including Mrs. Fields.  Other items on the shelves were Olive Oil and Martini Mixes.

Bottom line, AJ Wright has some good deals.  There is junk too, make no mistake.  Junk is there at all the discount stores.  That is why you have to take your time and pick through things carefully.  Time is the trade- off sometimes for getting a deal. If you check out the grand opening tomorrow in Norwalk, here are some things you might be interested in .  If you get there early, you could be one of the first 100 customers who will receive a $20 gift card before the store opens at 8 am.  You will also have the opportunity to participate in a real model search to be the next face of AJWright if you visit the Norwalk Plaza  store on Saturday, May 29 from 11 am to 4 pm).

Pictured: If you get hungry while you are at an AJWright, check out all their cookies, including Mrs. Fields.

One final thing I have to mention that I like about AJWright is their philosphy of giving back to the communities they move into.  The store gives back to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and that is a very cool thing to support.  I'm also glad to see a store moving into Norwalk, CA and bringing in jobs for the locals. Unemployment in California is still incredibly high.  I saw 3 people come into the store while I was there to fill out job applications.  That's pretty amazing considering that I was only there for a short period of time. The job applicants were a sad reminder that there are many people out there looking for something much more important that the latest shopping find.

So that's my AJWright story. I came, I shopped and I left with a good set of values for the price. Take that Ultimate Shopping Challenge.  I can sniff a BCBG discounted item a mile away!!!
