Anne Taylor Loft Fall 2010 Sneak Preview and Necklace Giveaway

Pictured: My favorite Anne Taylor Loft Fall look, a chiffon top with tweed jacket. (photo M. Hall)

Recently Anne Taylor's lower priced line Loft held a Fall Preview event for press and bloggers at LA landmark hotel, The Chateau Marmont.  The Chateau is a beautiful setting for any event and has long been a favorite of artists. It's beautiful, elegant and subdued. So were some of the Loft fashions.  I liked much of what I saw.  There were a few misses like the 70's faux fur shag vests and some over the top BIG jewelry, but overall I thought the collection was tasteful.   Clearly, Loft is trying to get a little more hip and trendy, and depart from the mothership, Anne Taylor. They may feel that Anne Taylor is established as a more mature brand with workplace suited looks.  Thus, the need to set the stage for the Loft Fall Collection at the always hip Chateau Marmont. I liked the beautiful looped ruffle front camisole tops they showed and the many flowy chiffon tops. Above is my favorite look, which is very Chanel reminiscent a collarless Tweed jacket with chain detail (price $148.00 US) , a flower pin (price $14.50) or brooch on the lapel, a chiffon loose top (price $44.50 US) and you are good to go.  I would skip the hat, but it I think it was meant to give the look that new, hip touch that the brand is striving for.

Pictured: Anne Taylor Loft models showing off the fall tweed jacket, scarves and comfy cardigans. (Photo: M. Hall)

Another standout in the collection was the Tweed jacket with collar pictured above, although I would skip the faux fur overlay. We are not out to go fur trapping this fall, are we? No need to display pelts. I also liked the floral scarves and the many loose fitting cardigans shown, cinched with big and skinny great belts to show off the waist. There were attractive colorblock dresses priced at $89.50 and even over-the-knee riding boots in the style of Jimmy Choo and Stella McCartney.  The boots were the most expensive item in the collection, priced at $189.50. Other looks included sequin tops and leather minis.

Pictured: I wouldn't wear the faux fur  Jeremiah Johnson type vest, but I do like Loft's sequin top and cardigan.  (Photo: M. Hall)

One thing I think Loft has always excelled at is great costume jewelry.  For Fall they showed a ginormous rhinestone gem flower cuff ($39.50)  that I fell in love with and received in the goodie bag at the end of the night. Ordinarily, I wouldn't pick such a large piece of bling for the wrist, but this one works because of the champagne color and delicate look of the gem. It's big, but it's not gaudy. There were also large costume necklaces on ribbons for ties, which is a trend coming back.  Which brings me to the giveaway here! Bling! Part of the Fall collection is this Gold and Black Angular necklace with ribbon tie.  Check it out below.  It's a striking piece. The retail price is $49.50 US.

Pictured: Loft's Gold and Black Angular Necklace (with gem cuff in the background) can be yours. (Photo: M. Hall)

This Loft necklace can be yours.  Here's what you need to do to get your Loft Bling on!  To enter to win, just leave a comment here by July 15th, midnight PDT and let me know what you would buy for Fall from Anne Taylor Loft .  Please leave your email address like so ( anne at yahoo dot com) in your comment so we can reach you if you are the lucky winner. Thanks to blog reader Christine, I now have two more of the necklaces to giveaway.  Christine donated her Anne Taylor jewelry from the party to be used as part of this giveaway, which means there will now be 3 lucky winners!

Remember, if you like the looks at Loft always look for a coupon or discount code for shopping. I have found Loft to be very good at discounting their retail prices. No reason to pay retail, when you don't have to!

Note: I did not receive any compensation from Anne Taylor Loft in exchange for this post. I received the two items of jewelry, pictured above, and a discount card (30% off) for shopping at the Loft. Al the items were presented  in the above pictured canvas bag, under the necklace in the picture,  at the end of the night.  By posting this, I am making  a full disclosure of items I received from the Loft at the Fall preview.

OMG, Cynthia Rowley Designs Diapers for Pampers!

Pictured: The New Designer Pampers by Cynthia Rowley

Does your little bundle of joy need to look chic n' cheap? Do you want them to get used to designer labels early in life? Then good news.  Pampers has a new Diaper that they are about to start selling at Target........designed by, wait for it...Cynthia Rowley.  Above is a picture of the stylish design.  Quite understated on an infant don't you agree? Will it make the unseemly task of diaper changing take on a new elegance? Who can say.  It's early days for this latest innovation from Proctor and Gamble.   I'm not a mommy, but I a dying to find out how much these cost. The products will be on Target store shelves and Target.com in July.

These innovative products will bought to market by Pampers maker Proctor and Gamble.  This is an interesting move for them, after recent complaints about Pampers from some Mommy bloggers.  According to P&G, Pampers by Cynthia Rowley incorporates a beautiful look and feel – giving discerning parents high performance, value and choice of style. The diaper collection, which will be available in pastel designs including madras, stripes and printed ruffles suited specifically to babies and toddlers, delivers the perfect blend of utility and aesthetics. After all babies need fashion choices too.  I mean white is so yesterday.

"As a mom, I wanted other moms and dads to have more options in every part of their lives -- even diapers," said Rowley. "It's the first piece of clothing your baby will ever wear, and it should be special."

I just don't know about that...are the diapers really "clothing?" What ever happened to the good old cloth diapers that were washed instead of disposed of in the garbage bins and land fills.  Now the talents of Cynthia Rowley will join all the other disposable diapers in the trash heap.

What do you think readers? Will you be just waiting to get these Designer Diapers?  Or would you rather wear a fashionable designer on your own stylish shelf?  So many questions.  This one is even more surprising that Liza going to the Home Shopping Network.

Los Angeles Designer Lauren Elaine Introduces Black Label Swim 2010

Pictured : One of the Lauren Elaine's après-swim cover-ups in a a beautiful blue. (Photo: M. Hall)

Los Angeles designer Lauren Elaine premiered her new Black Label swim collection last night at La Vida Hollywood.  It's great to see that not all the new swimwear is premiering in Miami at Mercedes- Benz swim week. After all, Los Angeles  is the home of the Beach Boys and their "California Girls." Lauren Elaine's show featured plenty of bikinis, but there were also some very elegant cover-ups (pictured above) and unique two piece suits with one shoulder asymmetrical tops. See the photo below to see what I am talking about.  This suit looks very Sex in the City goes to Morocco.

Pictured: A unique twist on the traditional Bikini, with a one- shoulder top (Photo: M. Hall)

I was a big fan of Lauren's Spring 2010 collection shown at LA Fashion Week.  Her designs are intricate and vintage inspired.  I love all the details on her dresses and tops.  So why is she venturing into the swimwear arena?   "I've always found it difficult to find swimwear that is unique and feminine without it being over-the-top or tacky. My aim when creating this collection was to take my design aesthetic from the Black Label dress collection, and apply it to swimwear," says Elaine. "I wanted to give my suits an added regal touch while keeping them effortless- as no one wants to look like they're trying too hard-especially while in a bikini."

Based on last night's show, I would say the designer accomplished her vision. I would wear the chic cover-ups with crisp white pants in the summer and sandals to show them off.  They are really well done.  According to swimwear consultant Maggie Read, who has worked on swimwear from Calvin Klein and Anne Cole, "It's unusual to see so many well-done cover-ups in a swimwear collection. Most collections only feature one or two cover-ups," says Maggie.  In addition to the luxurious looking cover-ups, there were also harem pants that could be worn over the suit bottoms that were very striking. You could definitely see the touches from the Black Label dresses applied to the swimwear.  Some of the designer's gorgeous evening dresses were on display after the show too.  Below is one of the models wandering around after the show in the lovely one shoulder cocktail dress with the rosette trim in a stunning green.

Pictured: My favorite Lauren Elaine dress from her spring collection. (Photo: M. Hall)

Lauren Elaine appeared at the end of the show for her runway walk in a flowing, one shoulder Grecian inspired gown made of silk chiffon. She channed old Hollywood glamor in this lovely coral, summer gown.  The elegant pin tucks at the bodice reminded me of an old vintage pattern.

Clap Your Hands Here Comes Liza: Liza Will Steal the Show on HSN!

This just makes me smile, because I love Liza with a Z!  Move over TV fashion sales pretenders, show biz legend Liza Minnelli is in da house.  Whose house? Well the  House of the Home Shopping Network.  When you've got an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony and a Grammy there is no doubt that you can rock the House of  HSN.  Did you see Sex and the City 2? Whose Bad? Liza.  This HSN gig is going to be a cakewalk for the showbiz legend.  The collection is already online, and when you view it, you'll recall Bob Mackie and  some of Liza's glittery showbiz styles.  Even more exciting than the collection, Liza will take to the airwaves on June 30th to premiere the Liza collection.  Get ready for some sequined separates, her signature flowy pants and jewelry that has plenty of bling.  "My life has provided me the ability to amass a wonderful wardrobe designed by fashion's brightest stars," says Liza. "I am excited to work with HSN in launching The Liza Collection and to have the opportunity to share my favorite looks with millions of women who want to look fabulous and feel their very best."  All the single ladies, put your hands up!

Here's what I like in the collection, and I am not kidding.  I like this Rose Pave Pendant and its matching bangle. Check it out, it looks like a more er, expensive designer.  I see shades of the divine Camelia flower enhanced by lots of sparkles as befitting a Broadway legend.

Pictured: The Liza Collection Pavé Rose Pendant with Snake Chain retails for $39.95 US at the "event price."

Other items that I think will be sellouts are the Charmeuse Top with Side Tie and the Cluster earrings.  Get your popcorn and your TV trays ready, the Liza Collection will debut at 10 p.m.–midnight EDT/ 7 pm- 9pm PDT on June 30 at HSN and hsn.com. Who cares about the clothes, I just want to see Liza!  My prediction: the HSN switchboard is going to light up like Christmas with calls, and the website is going to have to migrate to an extra back up server due to capacity overload.  This thing is going over the home shopping rainbow. The Twitter "fail whale" ain't got nothing on Liza at HSN.  Talk about Home Shopping Star Power.  You go Liza!  Click here to listen to Liza tell you why "Fashion is her Passion"  Liza, I knew you were a recesssionista :)

eBay's Fashion Vault will open Monday, June 28th

eBay used to be the place you went to sell of stuff you had worn a few times, or that didn't fit you anymore.  It was also a place where small business owners sold new merchandise.  But in the recession, all that is changing.  Now luxury brands sell on eBay at deep discounts.  Its all good for consumers looking for good deals. So you might want to check out the sale on Monday June 28th from the eBay Fashion Vaults. My spies tell me the sale will feature saving of  up to 85% off women & men’s clothing and accessories from Hugo Boss, Cole Haan, DKNY, Romeo & Julie, Paper Denim & Cloth and more The sale runs from Monday, June 28, 9 a.m. through Wednesday, June 30, 9 p.m. PDT.   Be sure to check seller feedback before you hit the buy button, and watch the shipping fees to make sure they are not a gouge. My last tip, price compare, just like you would at a store sell.  Sometimes eBay has the lowest prices, but not always. You want to be careful that you are indeed getting the best price. And know your limits, don't keep bidding something up over its value because you get caught up in the gambling like frenzy and become determined to win at any cost.

While you’re checking out the Blowout Sale, enter for your chance to win a $5,000 eBay Fashion Shopping Spree!  You’ll receive an entry when you join the Fashion Vault In Crowd June 28th through July 8th, or buy a Blowout Sale item.  Good luck and good shopping!

Scooter Chic: Hop on Board with Style. An Interview with GoGo Gear's Arlene Battishill

Pictured: Arlene Battishill is literally the driving force behind GoGo Gear, She is pictured here on the bike of her dreams, her Coco Chanel.

Some of the most mod and stylish figures of the swinging 60's were influenced by motorcyle riding gear.  James Dean and Marlon Brando started the trend in the 1950s by popularizing leather riding jackets in movies, and later, fashion icons like Marianne Faithful, Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton were seen around swinging London wearing stylish trench coats, leather boots and even mod riding hats.  Fashion forward to today and those styles live on in the Go Go Gear line founded by Los Angeles fashion innovator and scooter devotee Arlene Battshill. Her company provides "scooter girls" with stylish riding gear that channels 60s sensibilities, while offering protective gear that is as practical as it is modern. The Avenger's Mrs. Emma Peel would love the Go Go Gear stylish trench. Beyond the trench, the Go Go collection includes a military jacket, a vintage looking designer coat, a ventilated jacket called the Cafe and  a sleek short jacket called the Racer.  The designs are cruelty free as they are not made from leather, which has always been the material used for traditional biking gear.
Pictured: You don't have to ride a bike to appreciate GoGo's stylish short trench coat.

I'm not a Scooter Girl, but one look at this collection and I was intrigued. These looks are more Vogue than Harley Babe.  Quite ingeniously,  all the designs have a purpose, and that is to protect the rider.  Hidden away in each garment is protective insulation to cushion a fall.  Last weekend, I interviewed Arlene to talk about how she came to create GoGo Gear and what inspires her. In talking to her, its clear that Arlene knows as much about Coco Chanel  and fashion as she does riding.  It is this perspective that informs her designs and make them unique.   Although Arlene quite modestly, does not think of herself as a designer, it is clear that she is a designer and an innovator.  She took her passion for riding, and coupled it with the  need for protective riding garments to create GoGo Gear. She has a vision that is tailored to her particular customer.  Since its launch, her line has won awards and garnered worldwide press attention.  In a short time, she has developed a loyal following that tracks new shipments of her clothes and eagerly awaits them. Her line comes in regular and plus sizes, so it is accessible to all women. This is part one of my interview with Arlene.

Q. What inspired you to design fashion for women riding scooters or motorcycles?

Given that I ride a scooter and motorcycle and don’t wear leather when I can avoid it, my options for decent looking protective wear were pretty limited. The line started as “360”, an experiment in creating something that would give me the greatest visibility on the street, which meant 360 degree visibility. It was a line of reversible, reflective vests that you could wear on one side during the day and reverse it for maximum visibility at night. It was appropriate for bikers, joggers or anyone that might be outside and night and concerned about their safety. Although the “360” products are effective, they don’t address some other fundamental safety issues such as what happens on impact if you hit the ground or if you are sliding across the pavement during a fall. These other safety needs are what led to the development of GoGo Gear as you see it today. It incorporates the need for high visibility along with impact protection and abrasion resistance. Most of all, GoGo Gear addresses the primary problem that women have with protective riding gear, it’s unattractive, doesn’t fit properly, is too short in the back, has sleeves that aren’t long enough and is either light blue, pink or black and has branding plastered all over it. These are the most common complaints that women riders have about their riding gear and if a woman doesn’t like how she looks in something, she won’t wear it, even if it’s for her own protection.

Q. Your styles intrigue me--they are not the Harley Babe look, they are really stylish? What is the best seller? The Trench?

Although I’ve ridden Harley’s before, I was never one to get into the leather “biker chick” look. I’m not a biker chick, I’m just a girl who rides and wants to look cute when I’m riding, so the whole biker chick thing was never going to work for me. The Trench is, in fact, our best seller, both in the grey and black. It’s really interesting to see the sales of our jackets and get validation for what my instincts were telling me in the beginning. At the start, I knew we wanted to attract as many women as possible to our jackets and when you have a demographic as wide as our, namely young women who have just gotten their driver’s license all the way into their 70s, we had to determine what kind of designs would appeal to so many women. I’m probably lucky that I was a tomboy as a kid and fashion was never something I paid much attention to. I was always more comfortable in a sweatshirt and jeans, probably because I was too afraid to wear anything that would
have been considered fashionable. Even today, most of my wardrobe is black because I can’t put together an outfit without having to ask someone else how I look, so starting from that place, the designs were always going to be what would probably be considered “safe”. For me, “safe” actually translates into “classic” and a classic look never goes out of style, never goes out of fashion. As a result, I think that the Trench jacket has a classic look, a European feel to it and has some details that really make it stand out. The reflective details throughout the jacket, on the back of the neck, the lapels, the reverse side of the belt and the inside of the cuffs are so different and unique, that’s what really draws people’s attention. Plus, the placement of the belt changes the way the jacket looks on a woman, especially for plus size women. It’s also a design that will looks great on the tomboy or the femme fatale!

Q. How long have you been designing? What inspires you?

For me, it feels kind of odd to be asked “how long have you been designing” because I’m not a designer. I don’t have any training and I couldn’t tell you one designer from another. I’m just someone who needed a garment for a specific purpose and couldn’t find one. I had also recently lost my job and needed to figure out something else I could do. I think that sometimes when you don’t know how to do something, you just charge ahead in complete ignorance of all the things you’re not supposed to do and I just ended up with something that apparently met the needs of a lot of other people. I didn’t have a set look in mind when designing the jackets, only that they be classic. Since I have a particular fondness for European styling, the more streamlined look resulted. The bigger issue was the need to incorporate and engineer safety features into the jackets and have them strategically placed. This was a huge and expensive undertaking and probably why
no one has ever done this before so a lot of the engineering of the jackets influences the designs.
As for what inspires me, now that I’m manufacturing clothing, I look at everything but it’s always from the perspective of seeing something that I think I might be able to add to one of our jackets or another way of putting a safety feature in or perhaps locating a pocket in some unique way that also serves a functional purpose for the rider. My orientation is always that I appreciate the beauty of something I’m seeing but ultimately I have to make the engineering work and that’s when the design changes.

Pictured: The GoGo Gear Military Jacket alongside a quote from Coco Chanel about the timelessness of style.

Q You mentioned CoCo Chanel on your blog--any inspiration from her? In her lifetime, she was criticized for drawing some of her inspiration from menswear.  Is that something you can relate to?

I can completely relate to this because what she was doing was so unconventional for its time. The thing I most appreciate about CoCo Chanel is that she took something common, menswear, and did something completely unexpected with it, she transformed it and it became something for a completely different consumer. That’s what we’ve done with our jackets. You start in one place and end up in another. And like CoCo Chanel, it’s something that is causing people to rethink the traditional and consider other ways of doing things. People often ask me about the success of our line and what I tell them is that you have to do something unexpected, so for example, if you make outerwear, go and show it at a bathing suit or lingerie tradeshow. Why, because this is how you’re going to stand out and get people to notice and talk about you. This is what happened to us in Milan last year where we were among 1,400 exhibitors from 31 countries with just a little 15x15 booth compared to exhibits that seemed the size of a city block. We stood out because no one ever expected to see fashion combined with protective wear and as a result, captured the European press’ attention. Another thing about CoCo Chanel is that she was able to take something very basic and turn it into something else, hence, the “little black dress.” The little black dress took us out of all of the pomp and circumstance of women’s fashion at the time and into something that from my perspective was sublimely elegant and for me, in all my tomboy-ness from youth, completely transforming. And, as an aside, to pay homage to CoCo Chanel, I’m getting a new motorcycle this week and I’ve already named it “CoCo Chanel” in part because the bike is very much like her and our jackets, unexpected, not what it’s supposed to be, and absolutely adorable.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my interview with Arlene where she talks about how she uses Social Media to market her brand. Her use of Social Media is as innovative as her design story.  She calls Twitter, "The best money you'll never spend."  If you want to know what's happening with the GoGo Gear line, click here to follow Arlene on Twitter @LAScooterGirls.  If you follow her Tweets, then you'll immediately understand the loyalty her community feels for her.  It's refreshing to see a designer who is so in tune with her customers that she has built a community so she can listen to them on a constant, on-going basis. Many designers have Twitter communities, but not all of them are actively listening and learning from them.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Collection Returns to QVC with a Chanel Classic

Pictured: Mi Amour, The QVC version of Chanel's Paperclip necklace is part of the Jacqueline Kennedy Jewelry Collection.
If you don't already know this, and you love to shop, it can be extremely dangerous to be home sick and watch QVC.  Between doses of Nyquil, I had to tune into the midnight show tonight of the QVC Jacqueline Kennedy collection.  If you haven't check this out, QVC has a costume jewelry collection that is comprised of reproductions from the exquisite collection of the former First Lady.  The show will air again tomorrow (Sunday, June 27) from 4 pm to 6 pm EST/ 1pm to 3 pm PST.  But you won't see my latest shopping trophy on the show, because it is already sold out (at least that is what QVC said on air.)  I just snatched up the QVC reproduction of the rare Coco Chanel paperclip necklace that Chanel designed in the 1920s.  It's very beautiful, with Art Deco styling on the filigree clips accented by simulated gems. Apparently Jacqueline Kennedy wanted the necklace for years, but was not able to find one.  Her daughter Caroline found one of the necklaces at Sotheby's when she was working there, and purchased it for her mother.  Thus,  the Chanel Paperclip necklace found its way into Jackie's jewelry collection, and then later into QVC's reproductions. The QVC version is selling for approximately $87.00 US.  If you have time tomorrow, and you are a fan of fine jewelry, reproduced at reasonable prices, check out the Jacqueline Kennedy collection. Many pieces are specially priced for the day because it is the sixth anniversary of the collection on QVC.  Among the items in this Anniversary special are an Art Deco simulated diamond brooch, the trademark Jacqueline Onassis square rimmed sunglasses, and a white & black bangle bracelet that was a gift from Truman Capote. All the Jacqueline Kennedy reproductions are made by jeweler Camrose & Kross.  They do an excellent job. I own several of the pieces, and always receive compliments when I wear them.

People StyleWatch Spotlights some Celeb Styles for under $100.00

Pictured: Actress Kate Bosworth steps out in a cheap & cheerful Little Black Dress. (Photo courtesy of People StyleWatch)

Every now and then something surprisingly tasteful and economical turns up on the red carpet. This week while browsing People StyleWatch I spotted two amazing good deals from TopShop.  Above is Kate Bosworth at an event for Tod's sporting a $65.00 (US) TopShop Little Black Dress. How good is that? It looks really classy with the discreet black pumps and I'm guessing a much, much more expensive Ivory clutch bag.  Below is a shot of just the dress up close and it does not disappoint. The shoulders remind me a bit of a much more expensive Roland Mouret dress.

Pictured: This TopShop dress is only $65.00.  (Photo courtesy of People StyleWatch and TopShop)

The other look for less I love is this floral appliqué blouse worn this week by Amanda Seyfried.  I've seen more expensive versions at the Armani boutique and other upscale clothiers.  Check out the blouse on Amanda, it's so understated and feminine. No jewelry is required, as the blouse makes the statement.

Pictured: Actress Amanda Seyfried steps out in an adorable TopShop top and skinny black pants. (Photo courtesy of People StyleWatch)

Surprise! The blouse is also from TopShop and retails for $90.00 US.   Here's a closer look at just the shirt with all the details. I love the trim on the neckline for finishing.

Pictured: This TopShop floral appliqué blouse retails for $90.00. (Photo courtesy of TopShop)

I'm not saying that everything at TopShop is tip top quality, you know if you shop there that you need to weed through all the merchandise carefully for the best quality for price. Their prices are higher than competitors like H&M or New Look, but when it's good its good, and this Little Black Dress and appliqué blouse are two standouts. Remember, to check their annual sale for deals.

Perfume Review: Liz Earle Botanical Essence Eau de Parfum No. 1 Arrives in the US

Good news for all of us who like a light, non overpowering summer scent: the Divine Liz Earle Botanical Essence Parfum No. 1 has just launched in the US.  I couldn't be happier about at long last being able to buy this outside the UK.  If you haven't heard of this scent, you definitely want to give it  a whiff.  It's divine. I haven't liked something the  much since I discovered Chanel Cristalle.  Even more astounding, this is 98% directly derived from natural ingredients; high-altitude lavender from France, damask rose from Turkey, Italian bergamot and spicy patchouli from Indonesia.  This makes for a unique and intoxicating scent.  It's perfect for summer's warm weather as a splash of Botanical Essence leaves you feeling refreshed, but in a light way.  It's hard to describe how fresh and light this scent is, the first thing that the nose detects is the citrus hints, via the Italian Bergamot smell. Later, the other notes steep in and you'll sense notes of rose, then geramium and even cardomon. It's quite an intense and revitalizing surprise.  In 2009, the product won an award from the UK's Grazia Magazine as one of the Hot 10 for 2009.  It's easy to see why Botanical Essence won the award.  It offers a long lasting, fresh smelling, non-chemical fragrance that is very unique.  It addition to offering a lovely scent, the natural essences like lavender are calming and promote stress relief.  When asked if the parfum  has any aromatherapeutic/therapeutic benefits, the refreshing answer is yes. Jennifer Hirsch, Botanical Research Manager, says,  "Yes, our fragrance contains a blend of the highest quality pure essential oils including lavender oil, which is probably the most versatile oil used by aromatherapists for its calming, stress relieving and relaxing properties. Orange and lemon oils together with rose absolute are all renowned for their uplifting properties, while patchouli and geranium are more well known for their calming properties.:

I have known about this scent for awhile and have searched for it on eBay from eBay sellers willing to ship from the UK.  But with the US launch, I was lucky enough to get a product sample from the manufacturer to review.  What a pleasure to get a scent for review that is truly delectable. I am very particular about my parfums.  However, it's easy to love everything about Liz Earle from the packaging to the light scent.   The Box the perfume comes in is meant to be kept to protect the natural ingredients from heat and light so it will last longer. According to the FAQs,  "The fragrance should ideally be stored in its box and in a cool and dark place as heat and light may cause the fragrance to deteriorate."  I like that the box the parfum comes in is designed to preserve it's life span. Remember to keep the box and store your perfume in it to preserve it's lifespan.

Although it is a  more little pricey, than I'd like at $78.00 for 50ml/1.6fl.oz , a small spritz does last a long time.  For the money, you are also receiving quality, natural ingredients rather than harsh chemicals.  All these factors, combine to make me give Liz Earle Botanical Essence a rave review.  When I run out of the sample provided for this review, I will be buying more.  Look for it online at lizearle.com, Fred Segal Santa Monica, and the Brownes & Co. Apothecary, Miami, Fl.  And, of course, do check for it on eBay to see if you can find some sellers offering a good deal on it.   Have any of you tried it? If so, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Krysten Ritter: Modern Audrey Style

Pictured: Actress Krysten Ritter in an 123 Industry vintage inspired  off-white dress

While some blogs are all about celebrity style, and how to get the look for less, The Recessionista has never been a devotee of running after what the stars wear.  Living here in Los Angeles, I have seen many stars, and many faux pas.  You can't necessarily blame the celebs.  How many of us want to dress up when we are not working? Most of us are out running errands in jeans or sweats, without being chased by photographers.  But one celeb I have seen several times who always looks fresh and stylish, ala a young Audrey Hepburn is Krysten Ritter. And, even more amazing than her stylish look, Krysten is always nice.  I've seen her at Saks for shopping for handbags and at the Alternative Apparel fashion show looking stylish in Marc Jacobs and an orthopedic device! :)   You may remember Krysten from movies like of She’s Out Your League, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and 27 Dresses.

Pictured:  Krysten at Alternative Apparel show in LA, stylish even in an unseen orthopedic accessory (Photo: M. Hall)

This week she stepped out at Revolve Clothing in West Hollywood to in a vintage looking off-white dress.  The dress is by designers 213 Industry and retails for $145.00 US.  Look for it soon on website Diamondsandpearls.com.  Krysten's style tends to dresses and fashionable flats rather than ripped jeans and Tees. She has great taste, and this little dress is a winner. I hope to see a lot more her great style around Los Angeles at events! I hope we get to see her play the Wasp in The Avengers. She would be amazing.

The TopShop Summer Sale is on!

Not to be outdone by Zara, TopShop has also launched their summer sale online and in store. On sale are items from Kate Moss, dresses, tops, accessories, jewelry, lingerie, coats and more.  While I think the Kate Moss stuff is overpriced, there are some other cute vintage inspired pieces you might want to check out.  (I don't see any Celia Birtwell on the sale unfortunately.) Check Retailmenot.com for the TopShop discount codes, because some of them work on the sale, so you can save a bit on that pricey flat rate $15.00 TopShop shipping.

Zara's Semi-Annual Sale Starts June 24th, Get Ready!

Good news for those of us looking for good deals. Zara is kicking off its semi-annual sale tomorrow, Thursday, June 24th, in all its stores across the US. This is one of only two times per year when the entire store is on sale.  The sale includes suits, dresses, shoes and bags. To check for a Zara location near you, click here.  All spring/summer clothing, shoes and accessories are on sale. This includes all departments - women's, men's and children's. Store locations can be found at Zara.com, and the sale will continue until stock runs out.  You know what that means....try to shop early for best selection.:)

I'm a big Zara fan. They have always had great Chanel and Pucci inspired pieces for less, for savvy shoppers looking for high fashion on a low budget. Whenever I traveled to Europe, I would make it a point to stop into Zara. When I first visited Zara in France, I was blown away by the selection they had at a low price point. I'll always remember waiting with a line of French women to get into the Zara fitting room area. Outside of H&M, I had never seen anything like it.  Zara has stores all over the world, in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. If you don't know about Zara, you might want to give their styles a look.

Do you share a love for free fashion? Enter the Milly Cabana Contest

I would not be fit to call myself a frugal fashionista if I did not enter contests.  I mean someone has to win, why not one of us? The lure of the free, especially when luxury goods are involved,  has a very strong appeal.  That is why I have to tell you that one of my favorite designers, Michelle Smith aka Milly is having a Cabana Contest on her Facebook page.  To enter, you just have to join Milly's Facebook page and click the Like Us button, then fill out the entry form.  Milly gets a fan and you get an entry.  It's a very clever way for this talented designer to build her social media presence.  I can't wait until I receive my first Tweet from @Millyny! :)
Pictured: Kristin Davis wore Milly Cabana in "Sex and the City 2"

The winner will receive Milly's ultimate beach package including $1,200 worth of Cabana merchandise: a signature Milly paisley-print bandeau bikini, cotton lace cover-up, luxe terry cloth tote and matching beach blanket with detachable pillow.  Not such a bad deal, eh? One of the highlights on Milly's collections are her beautiful prints, and her Cabana wear features some amazing designs.  Just take a look at her towels and the swimwear.  It's no wonder that Milly Cabana was recently seen on Kristin Davis in “Sex and the City 2.” That Charlotte York has such good taste! :) The contest ends on July 2nd, when the lucky winner will be announced and also receive $1 toward Millyny.com for every Milly Facebook friend in their network.  Did I enter? You bet.  I never pass up an opportunity to try to score some free fashion!

aWEARness to Clean up the Golf: Kenneth Cole and Threadless

Pictured: Kenneth Cole's Gulf Tees

Designer Kenneth Cole has been innovative in raising awareness for current issues we should all care about, like "Don't Ask Don't Tell." Now he has turned his talents to trying to help clean-up the Gulf Oil spill with his "I Clean Up Well" Tees available now on Facebook.  Props to Kenneth Cole for this timely social media campaign to his large Facebook group and beyond. All of the net profits will be donated to aWEARness, The Kenneth Cole Foundation…which will support clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. At the Facebook site customers can mix and match 12 slogans, 14 colors and various graphic designs to create their own design. Click here to check it out.  The Tees are $35.00.

Threadless has also launched an attractive Tee with a sad image of a Pelican covered in Oil. The initiative called peliCAN will benefit the  Gulf Restoration Network a 15-year-old environmental nonprofit organization committed to uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf Region for future generations.  Check out this image, it's chilling.

Pictured: The Threadless peliCAN T-Shirt to aid the Gulf Clean-up.

The design is a collaboration between Threadless community member Frederik Wepener of South Africa and Threadless' own Ross Zietz.   This amazing Tee is only $10.00. Click here to check it out. Threadless has a great record raising money for Haiti via their T-shirts. It's wonderful that they put this together so quickly.

Of course, buying a Tee shirt is not the only way to help. There are a number of organizations who are reaching out to help.  Remember you can always donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund or the Gulf Restoration Network.  I am already giving.  My Uncle had a beautiful house off the coast of Alabama. I hate to think what the water there is like now. I'm sure that seafood is no longer plentiful at the Wolf Bay Lodge where we used to go for dinner. It's going to take a long, long time to clean up this mess.

Sponsored Post: American Express Membership Rewards Points + Giveaway of a $100 Crate & Barrel Gift Card

Pictured: My June Rewards Watch eNewsletter featuring the joys of Home Rewards.

So readers, believe it or not, I have been working  feverishly on my Home Entertainment Center remodel project using American Express Rewards points.  Back in May I accepted a challenge from American Express to use 300,000 Membership Rewards points to upgrade my old Home Entertainment Center with some new state of the art equipment. It hasn't been an easy choice as to how to spend my points.  I have learned that when I trade fashion for furnishings and electronics, I tend to take a lot more time deliberating my buy.  I expect that like many women buying electronics, I am not as comfortable shopping for gadgets as I am for clothes.  You know, I don't walk into Best Buy and gasp, "Oh it's a Samsung! It's so beautiful" as I would when I pass the windows at the Chanel store.  It took me only five minutes to buy my Chanel Camellia necklace, but it took me much more time to select my electronics via Membership Rewards.  Thank God I could do it all online, guided by user reviews and Consumer Reports. (Don't even ask how I am going to get this stuff set-up. Appeals will be sent to various friends.)  So here's the latest and a little thank you giveway for you dear readers.

Last week, I purchased a new high-tech Samsung 5.1-Channel Blue Ray Home Entertainment Center using about 90,000 points.  This entertainment center comes with docking stations for an iPhone or an iPod, so you can plug your mobile entertainment gadgets into the Home Center.  Ingenious, right!  So, my next Membership Rewards purchase was.....yes, you guessed it an iPod Touch for approximately 50,000 points!  The iPod Touch allows the users to watch movies and TV shows on a 3.5-inch display.  I ordered the 32 GB which holds thousands of songs, movies for when I travel and has the ability to function as a mini computer with access to applications and email.   I can't wait to use the iPod Touch for real-time tweeting and blogging from the BlogHer conference in August. With the addition on of the iPod Touch, I am out of points and the challenge comes to an end. Sad news. Of course, I will always continue to spend with my card and accumulate my own points.  ( I might pick up an iPhone later on my own dime, but I wanted to use my points for higher-priced items, the iPhone is only $129.00. Word: Use your points for pricey items to spare your wallet.)

Pictured: It's your turn to win: enter to win a Crate and Barrel Gift Card

Now it's time for my readers to share in the rewards! Compliments of American Express I am giving away a $100.00 gift certificate (US only) for one lucky reader to go shopping at Crate and Barrel.  Here's what you need to do to win. To enter to win, just leave a comment here by June 30th, midnight PST and let me know what  you like at Crate and Barrel?  Crate and Barrel  is one of the merchants on the American Express Membership Rewards offerings.  However, I didn't order a gift card from them with my points. Did I miss out? Are there great things there that you like. Leave a comments and let us all know.  Please leave your email address like so (ladyagaga at yahoo dot com) in your comment so we can reach you if you are the lucky winner.

PS--one final tip on how you can benefit by using your points. If you share your Membership Rewards success story with American Express you can win a  gift card. Here's the link:  Share your story and you could win a $50 gift card.

(I received this in my June card member email this month, because I really do use the points. Membership Rewards Points and Frequent Flyer programs are a great way to make your dollars stretch further in a tough economy.)

English Luxury Brand Mulberry to do handbag line for Target for Oct. 2010

Pictured: The Alexa bag from Mulberry

Some of you may have already heard this news, but just in case, English Luxury handbag designer Mulberry announced  that it is partnering with Target on an October 10 2010 introduction of a limited edition capsule handbag collection, called, mmm..can you guess?  Mulberry for Target.  From the press reports , "The Target Mulberry collaboration will be available in most stores in the United States and on Target.com from 24 December 2010. " Target  has not yet revealed price points for the Mulberry collaboration. Drats! That is a crucial piece of budget fashion intelligence.

Mulberry is the British fashion brand that has been making gorgeous leather goods since 1971. Recently, they have expanded their offerings to Mulberry clothes.  The British brand has been synonymous with class and good taste, so it will be interesting to see how it looks rendered in "Pleather."   While I would guess that these would be "Pleather" bags, not all the reports agree.  According to Fashionista via Racked, some of the bags may not be made of faux leather.  I have to admit, I was a big fan of the "Pleather Anya Hindmarch" bags from Target, and bought several. The same designer who designed the above pictured Alexa Mulberry bag will be working on Mulberry for Target. So this collaboration sounds promising.  It's been hit or miss with the Target lines.  I loved Anya Hindmarch, but follow-up  Target handbag lines like the Carlos Falchi and Botkier lines were less than satisfying and I passed.  Here's hoping Mulberry for Target is well done and well priced!

People StyleWatch Spots Cat Deeley's Vintage Inspired Jewelry for QVC

Pictured: Cat Deeley alongside her Indian-inspired earrings. (Photo QVC; Juan Rico/Fame , courtesy of People Stylewatch.)

As an avid subscriber, I do check my PeopleStylewatch for the latest trends. I like their reports on new fashion trends laden with lots and lots of pictures.  So I was really curious this week to read the news that reality dance show host, Cat Deeley , was bringing out a low priced vintage inspired line for QVC. One thing some established, and well trained (via Parsons or the like) have mentioned to me in interviews with dismay is the proliferation of these celebrity fashion lines. A nameless designer lurks behind the scenes churning out the fashions, while the celebrity name goes on the label.  I wonder if there is someone behind the Cat Deeley line? Afterall,  Cat is the host of So You Think You Can Dance, not So You Think You Can Design Jewelry. I do like her fashion philosophy. “I really want to provide jewelry that people can wear and are real statement pieces that can completely change an outfit but are accessible to everybody. Because that’s what fashion should be about,” says Cat.

Although Cat may not be the sole designer here, some of the collection is very cute and does channel old vintage looks.  I wouldn't go to QVC for Indian inspired earrings, I would go to Amrita Singh for those, but I do like some of the bracelets and necklaces from Cat's Modern Vintage line.   Here are a few of the pieces I like from looking at the photos:

The Crystal Marquise Bracelet for $29.56. I like the delicate design of the gems in the middle flanked by a row of little crystals on either side.

The Crystal Necklace & Earrings Set with the delicate little emerald, pink, purple or even light blue colored gems (your choice.) The price for the set is $39.50, which I do think is reasonable.  I like the Victorian look of this one.  I'm bookmarking the the link on the QVC site  to check user reviews when they arrive in.  I'll be curious to see if those who order it are pleased with it.

What do you think readers? Are any of you dying to snatch up Cat Deeley Modern Vintage? Have you bought jewelry from QVC in the past? Personally, I am still entranced by the Jacqueline Kennedy collection.  I heard from QVC via Twitter that they will have shows on the Jacqueline Kennedy Collection on 6/24 and 6/27.  I can't wait!

Consumer Reports Evaluates the Best Places to Shop

Consumer Reports just published their survey of the best places to shop and I, for one, am all ears.  I frequently consult Consumer Reports before I shop to find the best quality deals, plus the best price.  Remember shoppers,  you can check Consumer Reports online.  Look for quality for price, not just sale price. Cheap is sometimes just cheap and has no value!  You want value for your money.  Service is another thing that is good to find, but becoming increasingly rare. Very few stores offer help via sales personnel anymore.  I wrote earlier  this year that I liked shopping at Armani AIX because the sales people were so helpful.  It's rare to find any help now at "budget retailers."

So here's what Consumer Reports found, and I agree with the findings.  Costco earned high marks from consumers, but consumers also found good deals at JC Penney, Meijer,  Sears and Dillard's. In a nutshell, bigger  isn't always better when evaluating the overall shopping experience.
  • Highly rated: Costco, Dillard's, Macy's and Sears. Four chains earned outstanding scores for merchandise quality: Costco (watches and jewelry, personal-care items, hardware, home décor, kitchenware, electronic entertainment such as music and DVDs, and sporting goods and toys), Dillard’s (men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing; personal-care items; home décor; and kitchenware), Macy’s (home décor and personal-care items), and Sears (hardware).
  • Target’s "cheap chic" goods didn’t wow everyone. Despite its high-profile partnerships with fashionistas Cynthia Vincent, Eugenia Kim, and Zac Posen, survey respondents judged the quality of Target’s women’s clothing and watches and jewelry below average, and the store’s kitchenware, home décor, and men’s and children’s apparel average. ( my note: I have said this in numerous blog posts and reviews here.)
  • Look for service at Dillard's. When it came to service, Dillard’s stood out from the pack. According to Jack Abelson, president of Jack Abelson & Associates, a retail-consulting firm in Leawood, Kan., service is deteriorating industry-wide because of retailers’ fixation on low prices. "The trouble today," Abelson says, "is that the staff is not trained to be anything but glorified cashiers and security guards." Shoppers at Kmart, Walmart, and Sam’s Club (Walmart’s warehouse club spin-off) were more likely than others to complain about the staff.
  • In addition to a lack of sales help, the most prevalent problems were that desired items were out of stock and that checkouts were jammed. In fact, 29 percent of shoppers we surveyed complained about long lines. The problems were much worse than average at Kmart, Walmart, and Meijer, a Midwestern chain of superstores.
To learn more about the Consumer Reports survey of over 30,000 plus shoppers, check the survey findings here.

Father's Day Gift Ideas

Don't forget, Father's Day is this Sunday.  Are you ready? Here's a little suggestion.  Do not give Dad a Tie.  It maybe one of the worst all time gifts ever for men.  Yes, they need them, no they don't want them as gifts.  What do I think Dads all over the world want?  Toys for Guys, or electronics and sporting event tix.  Here are a few suggestions:
  • New DVD Player with DVDs for viewing
  • Gift Certificates (so he can get what he really wants)
  • New iPOD + iPod download gift cards
  • New CDs for the Car
  • New Cell Phone, Blackberry, GooglePhone or iPhone (check the T-Mobile sale this Saturday)
  • iPad
  • Tickets to Sporting Events (LA Lakers comes to mind) or concerts (Check TicketLiquidator.com for deals)
  • Dinner out at the restaurant of his choice (check Restaurants.com for deals)
I would recommend shopping  for the above items at Best Buy, Frye's, Kohl's (sale this weekend),  Macy's Preview Days sale, TJ Maxx or Marshalls.  You might also want to check Loehmann's as they carry some cool iPod accessories from time to time and other gadgets.

Another suggestion, check out your nearest outlet mall.  Here in LA, where have the Camarillo Outlets, but every area has some type of outlet. The folks at Camarillo have these suggestions for gift giving.  Note, not all of theirs are Toys for Men, as mine are! :)

  • Outdoorsy Dad? A new pair of sunglasses for the summer! (Sunglass Hut, or Designer Store)
  •  Athletic Dad? Check out a Nike Factory Store ( or other) for  fan gear for his favorite sports team!
  •  Best-dressed Dad? Stop by Izod or J. Crew outlet store for some new casual wear
  •  Grilling Dad? Restoration Hardware Outlets and others offer cooking supplies and equipment for the barbeque that he’ll be using all summer!  In New York, check the Williams Sonoma outlet at Woodbury Commons.  It simply rules.  I love it there.
  •  Tech Dad?  Get him headphones, a digital music system or home theatre system from Bose!

Click here to look for Premium Outlets in your area with Fathers' Day Deals.  If you become a VIP, you'll receive additional discounts too :)

The Recessionista Reviews: Kushyfoot Flats to Go, the Answer to Cruel Shoes

Pictured:  My feet saying ahahah in Kushyfoot portable flats after a tough day of standing. (Photo: M. Hall)

Above are my poor little swollen feet in their new best friend, Kushyfoot.  I was sent a sample of these  foldable  Pleather (polyurethane black ballet flats with soles of ethylen vinyl acetate)  for evaluation a while ago, but quite honestly, I didn't feel any urgent need to try these until last week when I was traveling doing  a big trade show event.  I literally spent hours standing on my feet and walking miles around a hotel campus.  I remembered I had these little collapsable flat shoes in my bag, and took them out to finally give a test run.  I was skeptical about plastic flats, but I have to admit, that after a hard day standing and running around these feel pretty good.  They are surprisingly comfortable.  The package says that they "massage your feet", which is a bit of a stretch, but when your feet are pinched by fashionable heels, or you've been walking around in what Steve Martin called  Cruel Shoes, they feel really good!   You can walk short distances in them outside, but I don't recommend you go very far, since the soles are thin.  However, I gave them a test walk and  you can walk around in them on hard pavement and they can withstand it.  The shoes come packed up in a nice, neat little plastic carrier and you can carry them in your purse.  However, I prefer to keep them in my car for quick access, and I'll tell you why.  The Kushyfoot Flats to Go are going to be my new driving shoe!  A month ago, you may recall I was high-fiving over finding a gorgeous pair of BCBG pink ballet slippers on sale at AJ Wright.  Here's how the heel of those cute slippers look now, after one month of driving in Los Angeles, and slamming on the brakes in traffic.

Pictured:  The agony of fabric shoes that have been soiled.  If only I had tried the Flats to Go while driving! (Photo: M. Hall)

To my eternal chagrin, I have soiled my pretty pink shoes by driving in them.  I should've preserved them by wearing the Kushyfoot flats to drive, instead of wearing the pink shoes!  The Flats to Go can help preserve you favorite shoes, as well as provide relief from wearing heels.   They are not just for relief from blisters, swelling or sore feet.  They also make great airplane shoes.

I had planned to give the Flats to Go away as a blog giveaway, but I am sorry readers, I can't bare to part with them. These little shoes are a very pleasant surprise. And besides, y'all probably don't wear size 8!  If you're interested in packing a pair of these in your suitcase for your next trip, or keeping a pair in your car or purse when the agony of Cruel Shoes sets in, you'll have to look for these at  your local drugstores or www.kushyfoot.com. The shoes retail for $8.99 US.

Note: I was given these shoes for the purpose of doing a product review and have not received any compensation from Kushyfoot.

CEW's 2010 Beauty Award Winners on Sale Online at CVS.com

Every year the CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) recognizes the best beauty products from over 500 entries.  This year, CEW selected 31 winners to honor.  The good news for savvy shoppers is that some of products are available at online at  CVS  until June 27th for 20% off (including the products featured here.)
I am a CVS shopper, and I have a CVS Extra Care Card for extra discounts  (you can apply for one in store or online.)  I love how they have the coupon kisk in the store.  You don't have to remember to clip coupons and bring them into the store.  Just bring in your CVS card, and scan it  at the Kiosk.  The coupons print out for you right there in store.  J'adore those easy savings!   With the CVS discounts on the CEW winners, it's good to know that you don't have to pay high-end department store prices for quality beauty products.   Oil of Olay was a big winner at the awards.  I find the products good, but beware the "rebates."   Honestly though, I haven't successfully cashed one in one of the Oil of Olay rebates yet.  I won't be running them on the blog anymore.  Have any of you been able to get a rebate? Regardless of the rebates, I do like their products and consider them good value.

I'll be stocking up on on this one!

One product I really like that you won't find at CVS, but is also a good deal is Avon's  CLINICAL Luminosity Pro Brightening Serum (Anew Serum for Anti-Aging.)  I'm not a dermatologist, and I don't play one on TV :), but I really, really like Anew.  I think it was a finalist in the  CEW awards. It's a gel moisturizing, cream, that is clear and light.  I use it before I go to bed, on my Death Valley Dry Zone, which is how I refer to my Forehead.  Some call this area part of the "T-Zone."  It's not under $10.00, but I do like it.   Avon sent me a sample, and I give it a big thumbs up.  But I am not alone, reviewers on the Avon site also give it raves and so do cosmetic reviews.   I don't know if it inhibits age spots, but it does give my skin a dewy fresh glow for sure, which I appreciate. This ANEW Serum is not on sale, but Avon is having a special now.  You receive a  FREE ANEW CLINICAL Eye Lift (a $28 value) with ANEW CLINICAL Luminosity Pro Brightening Serum purchase!  This helps with the price point, because Avon's  CLINICAL Luminosity Pro Brightening Serum retails for $56.00 US (still less than many department store brands, but not cheap.)

For more information on all the CEW award winners, click here.  Leave a comment if there are any you have tried and loved.
