Anne Fontaine is one of my fashion sins. It's pricey, but oh so beautiful. I discovered Anne Fontaine years ago on a trip to France, and I've been in love ever since. I don't step into the stores very often, unless they are having a sale, because very serious damage can be done. Last week I was over at South Coast Plaza in the OC, and discovered to my delight that the Anne Fontaine spring collection is on sale for 30% off. Above are two of my favorites from the Spring collection, which are now on the sales racks: a long navy blue ruffled cardigan and a pleated navy top, which is perfect for the summer heat. For those of you not familiar with the brand, Anne Fontaine is a Brazilian designer of French descent who started her business making the most amazing white shirts. I remember seeing them in the window of a store in Cannes year ago, and like Daisy in The Great Gatsby, I gasped and thought they were the most beautiful shirts I had ever seen. The crisp Anne Fontaine white shirts were made from natural fabrics like poplin, cotton and pique. Later gorgeous double ruffles on collars and cuffs were added. Today Anne Fontaine makes much more than white shirts. The brand offers amazing handbags, jewelery, sweaters, floral tops, stretch lace tops and even fuschia blouses. And all of it is made with the same quality as the original Anne Fontaine tops. Below are two current objects of my shoppping lust which are on my Anne Fontaine waitlist (until the next sale.) I'm saving for this romantic black blouse and gorgeous handbag. After all, a woman can't live by discount goods and chain store fashion alone. I like to have some unique, and really well made items in my closet in addition to sale finds that may not be of the best quality.

Enduring Fashion: Irene Lentz from Bullocks-Wilshire and MGM to The Closer
As some of my readers know, I am lover of "Vintage Vogue." One of my particular favorites, is California designer Irene Lentz. Looking for "Irenes" at Vintage stores in California has become one of my epic quests. Every now and then a beautiful Irene appears at DecadesTwo or on an eBay auction. Earlier this year, I was fascinated by the sight of Parker Posey in a Vintage Irene evening gown at the Costume Designers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills. If you've never heard of Irene, then you need to check out the website Irene Lentz, lovingly maintained by her great-niece, and look at Irene's elegant designs. Many of the garments feature incredibly detailed hand work. British Vogue called Irene's designs "Californian elegance." Irene was a California original, living and working here in Los Angeles and selling her designs here at the exclusive Bullocks-Wilshire department store in the special "Irene salon." Chanel was the only other designer with such an exclusive salon at the art deco, exclusive Bullocks-Wilshire.
Saturday, I will be heading to Bullocks-Wilshire, which is now part of the Southwestern School of Law to learn more about Irene and her salon. The school bought the Bullocks building but, every year, they have an annual tea and tour of the old department store. Click here for information on the Bullocks tour on July 31st. I am so excited to set foot in the Irene salon. Best of all, another Irene lover will be accompanying me on the journey. I'll be meeting fellow Irene affecianado, Greg LaVoi at Bullocks to take the tour. Greg is a twice Emmy-nominated costume designer, who currently creates the quirky looks for Kyra Sedgwick's character Brenda Leigh on the TV series The Closer . On the show, guess what Vintage designer is part of Brenda's distinctive look ? Well, Vintage Irene from Bullocks Wilshire of course! Greg has collected many wonderful Irene suits which Brenda wears on the show. When I spoke to Greg about why he choose Irene for Brenda, he shared with me what he imagined as Brenda's fashion journey in Los Angeles. He said, " I created a story for Brenda. To me, Brenda came to Los Angeles, as someone who didn't spend much time on fashion or clothing. Later, I imagined that after Brenda had been in LA for awhile, she wanted to expand her wardrobe, but she would not want to spend a lot of money on clothes. So, I imagined that Brenda would go shopping at Vintage stores, and that she would feel better buying older suits, than she would going to a department store and buying expensive, off the rack items." Thus, the beautiful fashion partnership between Irene and Brenda's modern style began. I'm sure that Irene, who was once the head costume designer at MGM, would be thrilled that she continues to play a part in Hollywood style and film costume. Where does Greg find all those Irenes? "I try and snap every one up that I see on e-Bay or in Vintage stores," he says.
Look for another update on Irene after I take the tour of Bullocks-Wilshire. I'll be interviewing Greg about his extensive collection of Irenes and taking photos of some of the suits. And if you love Vintage styles, be on the lookout for "Irenes" at Vintage stores, and on eBay. Every now and then, you might just discover some that are reasonable priced. In 2009, the LA Times showed off an Irene from Bullocks listed on eBay for only $9.99. If only there had been "Buy It Now" on that auction! :)

Two Buck Camis from Old Navy
With record heat and humidity across the US, Canada and parts of Europe, it's a good time to look for a summer staple that is cool looking, and literally helps keep you cool. I'm talking about a Camisole. Whether you wear it under a sheer, diaphanous light summer blouse, a vintage Victorian lawn shirt or on it's own, Camis are a wardrobe staple. This week budget retailer Old Navy is offering a deal on Camis that is almost as cheep and cheerful as two buck Chuck (Charles Shaw wine, at Trader Joes.) Here are the details. From July 29 to July 31, Old Navy is offering Camis for only $2.00. This special is available in stores in the US only. Now don't go hoarding Camis bargain shoppers. Old Navy is limiting your purchase to 5 Camis per customer. I don't know if Old Navy has an in-store alarm system on the number of Camis, but don't say I didn't warn you. Don't even try to get 6 of these!
For more information, check out Facebook.com/OldNavy and click on the events tab for all the previously top secret details. In the Facebook group, you can pick up the coupon you need to get the Cami discount. You can also say “Cami 4 me” to a store associate, and get the discount. There aren't too many fashion items you can buy for $2.00, so I'll be curious to see what these are like in-store.

H&M Comes to Harlem with Store Re-opening July 30
Target is not the only retailer moving to Harlem. On July 30 discount fashion retail H&M is reopening it's shop on 125th street in this historic New York neighborhood. As is typical with H&M store openings, there will be prizes for the first customers in line. Here are all the details for my New York readers and those visiting NY. To support the local community, the Swedish retailer is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem. H&M will donate gift cards to club members, in addition to a financial grant to support their programs. On opening day, H&M will grant the Boys & Girls Club early access to the store at 9 am to allow their members to shop before the public. But wait there's more. In celebration of the grand re-opening, H&M Harlem will also offer the first 200 shoppers in line an H&M T-shirt and Access to Fashion Pass, valued from $10 to $300. One lucky winner will receive an "All Access Fashion Pass" , allowing them early entry to the store and a personal style consultation from an H&M stylist. Be careful fashionistas, if it's hot on Friday, don't wear yourself out in line waiting for a fashion pass. There will be fantastic opening offers all weekend for the entire family including: ladies' dresses starting at $3, men’s shirts starting at $5, and girls’ leggings starting at $3. Besides, H&M prices are always reasonable. Unfortunately, I'm not in NYC this week for the grand re-opening, so you might have to check it out for me! If you do, leave a comment.

A fashionista with recessionista heart: Lady Gaga gives away tickets to Los Angeles' Sold Out Monster Ball Concert
So if you are a fashion lover, who wants to see a fantastic concert and help a good cause, here's what you need to do. Get on over to Covenant House California,1325 N. Western Ave., Hollywood, Ca., 90027 today, July 27, at 11:00 am PST, and help Extreme Makeover's Home Edition star Eduardo Xol, paint and renovate Covenant House. The concert tickets are offered in exchange for what my grandfather used to call a little "elbow grease" or just plain hard work. Volunteers will paint, clean, tour the campus, and engage in a Q&A session over lunch with the homeless youth at the shelter. If you have some extra time today, you might want to lend a helping hand. Kudos to Virgin Mobile USA for helping this worthy cause. 2 million young people between the ages of 12 and 24 will experience at least one episode of homelessness each year and shockingly more than 100,000 youth sleep on the street for six months or more in America .Los Angeles is especially hard hit, with an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 young people experiencing the dangers of homelessness. Covenant House California is set-up to help these people. Thanks to Lady G for lending her support! Lady Gaga, what will you be wearing to the concert? Tasteful Armani....er or something, else? :)

Goodwill Hunting: Frugal is the new Black
Feeling the economic blues? Lost the will to shop? It's time for a new will, the Goodwill. Today I went behind the Orange Curtain, deep into the recesses of the Orange County (Costa Mesa & Huntington Beach) to do a little Goodwill hunting. Clearly, not all Goodwills are created equal. I was amazed at the values I saw. Oh, there is lots of junk too, but there are also some great finds. The stock at Goodwills has changed as retailers are donating their clearance items that don't sell to the stores (props to them for not dumping items.) Goodwill staff told me they receive many new items from Walmarts and Target stores every week. The charity stores are no longer the place that old, decrepit, stained items go to die. The shelves are teaming with items that are still in the box, and new with tags. And because the items are new, and some are designer, there didn't seem to be any embarrassment among the Goodwill shoppers. No one seems to be looking around to make sure their neighbors or co-workers are lurking in the store, and will see them. The day has finally arrived when frugal is the new black.
The OC Goodwills offer much more upscale merchandise than many of our Los Angeles stores. I saw Lily Pulitzer shoes for $7.99 (above), Burberry (a rare UFO like sighting), Vera Wang Lavender Label, Target's Liberty of London comforters and rain boots, designer handbags, Zack Posen for Target, Target Home collection items, Perrier Jouet hand painted champagne glasses, Betsey Johnson, plus clothing from Talbots, Loft, Anne Taylor and Banana Republic. For some time my friend Robin has been telling me about all the great things she has been finding at the Goodwills. Robin's house is full of Goodwill treasures. Her closet even has Moschino and a Louis Vuitton Vernis bag from Goodwill ! It was hard to believe when she would talk about the items from high end stores with the tags still on that she was able to pick up, but seeing is believing.
Since Robin is such a Goodwill expert, I decided to take her up on her Goodwill tour offer today do a little Sunday shopping. It's not a quick trip to go through all the items at a Goodwill, but if you have the patience, some amazing values can be found. I spent about 4- 5 hours today digging through the Goodwill racks. Check out some of today's bargain sightings:
So after a hard day of bargain hunting, I ended up with the following : Liberty of London Target rain boots for $ 5.99, a Vintage black sweater made in British Hong Kong for $6.00 (will look great with one of my vintage Chanel Pins), a 3 piece wrought iron Bistro Patio set new in the box for $44.99 (retail over $200.00), 3 hand-painted Perrier Jouet Champagne Glasses for $1.99 each, new "Classic Home" bathroom shelves for $39.99, BCBG shoes for $13.99, Lily Pulitzer shoes for $7.99 and a 45 piece set of new flatware for $7.99. Pretty incredible, huh? Best of all, there is no sales tax at Goodwill. Some additional perks are Sundays and Tuesdays seniors (age 55 or over) get an extra 10% off. There are also racks with color codes on them, that offer additional savings. Look for the color coded racks. Of course, as I witnessed today, Goodwill can be addictive. You may think that because everything is deeply discounted, that you need to load up. I would discourage weekly trips :)
To find out where the best Goodwills are in your area, have a look at YELP! The reviews can give you the low down by location. Of course, not every trip can be a great one, but if you have the patience, you're bound to find some good deals. My new wrought iron Bistro set was heavy, so one of the Goodwill employees helped me load it into my car. I told him, I couldn't believe how many great things I got for just a little over $100.00. He said, "It's almost like stealing isn't it?" Yeah, almost :)
Best of all, when you shop at Goodwill, your purchases create opportunities for people with disabilities or other barriers to become independent and support themselves, and their families
PS: I didn't go to the Goodwill empty handed. I donated several items at the store, that I haven't made use of, some new in the box. If you need help Goodwill hunting in Southern California, leave a comment here for Robin on the blog.

In Praise of Swapping: The LA Think Thru Fashion Swap
![]() | ||||
| Pictured: The swap table of accessories, jewelry and handbags at the Avalon Hotel this week. The blurry hand in motion belongs to Sarah of the Soignee Blog. She was moving quick to get the deals! (photo: M. Hall) |
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending a fashion swap meet amongst a group of Los Angeles fashionistas, stylists and bloggers. The event was the ThinkThruFashion Accessory Swap Soiree at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event was organized by Think Thru Fashion's Sydne Summer and was a complete success. As we all continue to hold the purse strings tighter and tighter on our fashion wallets, swapping not shopping has become increasingly popular. I've written about this growing trend before, as swap parties and even online events have been springing up around the world. The Think Thru Fashion event was a bit different as only accessories, not clothing or shoes, were on the swap table. Each attendee checked in at the event registration table with their items, and received a "star" for each item bought to the event. In exchange, attendees could use those stars like cash to buy swap items. So I bought 6 items to swap, received 6 stars, and got 6 new items from the swap. All the goods were arrayed on a table for party goers to peruse and trade. I was surprised at the start of the event there was a flurry of activity to get the best items on the table just as there would be at any great sale. Swaps are a great way to "cull" your closet, get rid of items you are not wearing or using, and pick up some stuff that might tickle your fashion fancy without spending any money. I traded a very shiny gold necklace, that was a gift, and not my style, with another swapper (HemptressHandbags ) who had a fantastic Scarlett bag that she had originally spent $600.00 on! If you know me, you know I love my handbags. And I definitely scored at the Think Thru Fashion Swap.
I was able to pick up two fantastic bags at the swap in exchange for my no worn jewelry, no longer carried handbags and a hat I had abandoned long ago. Best of all, the swap featured a raffle with amazing prizes donated by some great sponsors to benefit charity. Attendees were offered the chance to win prizes from Dermatologica, eco-friendly The Hemptress handbags, Liz Larios jewelry, Michael Stars (check their annual sale) and BedHead Pajamas in exchange for purchasing a raffle ticket. Sales from the raffle raised over $2,000 for Law & Order's Mariska Hargitay's charity The Joyful Heart Foundation which supports survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Big thanks to Michael Stars, Blue Angel Vodka and Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics for sponsoring the event. Youngblood Cosmetics was there doing makeovers, and they did an amazing makeover on my fellow blogger Elizabeth Peterson (author of the blog Traded My BMW for a Mini Van.)
Although the Think Thru Fashion Swap was held at a hotel, remember, swapping is an inexpensive treat that you can enjoy in your own home. It makes for a great party that is cheap and cheerful. Just add your old stuff, your best girlfriends and some cocktails, and voila! Party! Have any of you tried fashion swapping? Did you find it offered some great fashion savings? After all, one fashionista's cast-offs, are another fashionista's finds.

Christmas in July: Target's Black Friday, deals at Sears, Kmart, Old Navy and more!
Target is launching a Black Friday sale in July! July 23 to be exact. You may have seen this on the news, Good Morning America, or the definitive source of all things Target, the Target-Addict blog, Target is hosting a Black Friday tomorrow, July 23. Yes, a number of retailers are trying to start the Christmas and after Thanksgiving sales early, like, er in July! So here are a few details about the Target sale. The items I am most interested in, are from Target's Liberty of London collection. Here's a list of that and other deals to look for tomorrow. Target has said there will be deals on more than 500 items*, including:
Liberty of London for Target
* Adult Bedding Collections, $14.99-52.49 (25 percent off)
* Clothing, including: dresses, tank tops and bathing suits, $14.99-33.74 (25 percent off)
Electronics
* Philips Blu-Ray Disc player, $99.99 (42 percent off)
* Aiptek 6.0MP Digital Camcorder, $39.99 (60 percent off)
Entertainment
* Wii 9-in-1 Sports Pack, $25.00 (50 percent off)
* “Ally McBeal: The Complete Series” and original TV soundtrack, $83.99 (58 percent off)
* Note: Limited quantities available at these prices.
Other stores offering Christmas in July deals include KMart, Toys"R" Us, Sears and Old Navy. I like the Old Navy sale, as they are offering special discounts for educators. Old Navy will offer "back to school discounts" beginning Friday, July 23 at 9 a.m., and their sales are only offered in stores. Students and teachers with school identification will also receive 25 percent off their entire purchase on Friday at Old Navy.
Time Magazine reports that " According to the retail-sales statistics released by the Commerce Department on July 14, June department store sales dipped 1.3% compared to sales in May of this year, and were down 9.4% compared with June of 2008." The translation is that retailers are hurting, so it's time to accelerate the Christmas/Holiday buying season. What do you think readers? Are you buying this? Literally? :) If not, you'll have another chance to buy on Monday, July 26 when the summer version of "Cyber Monday" launches.

DKNY's New Facebook Campaign Features New York Heart & Soul, and Savings too!
Donna Karan is an American treasure. Her fashions are fantastic. The clothes are designed for comfort and amazing fit, whether you buy DKNY or Donna Karan. For those of us who are fans of her New York Heart and Soul fashions (remember her NY Fashion Week show in February), Donna has launched a new ad campaign. The campaign is a lovely bouquet to the city of New York. As with the Cozy video, street life plays an important role in the new ads. You can see the new ad campaign posted on the wall of the newly enhanced DKNY Facebook group, in the photo tab. Just look at the pictures of the Yellow Cabs on the streets of Manhattan above from the DKNY Facebook contest. The other cool thing about this campaign is its use of social media. The ads prominently feature DKNY's Facebook community and her Twitter ID. If you are not already following DKNY on Twitter, and you love fashion, check it out! DKNY on Twitter offers the fresh and witty perspectives of the PR Girl behind the scenes. When you read her Tweets, you are getting the real, uncensored scoop on how things work within the business of fashion. For me, the Twitter community is one of the strongest assets the DKNY brand has. DKNY has over 136,000 followers and growing. The brand's DKNY Facebook community also offers fantastic updates on what the design house is doing, plus...wait for it., one of my favorite things: savings. Regular coupon codes are featured. Right now, if you are a Facebook fan and you LIKE DKNY on Facebook (or a reader here), use code FACEBK15 to save 15% until August 31st (US only.)
Facebook readers are also invited to express their own New York Heart and Soul, by uploading their favorite pictures of New York to share with the group. If I have time when I am in New York at the BlogHer conference I will try to snap some of my own pictures for the DKNY Facebook group with my new Olympus PEN camera. One of the highlights for me of BlogHer will be visiting the NYC Garment District with Shop at Home to see where DKNY is made in New York, NY. In the meantime, I'll be double dipping on DKNY savings by visiting her sale page and using my Facebook coupon. Check out this cute DKNY dress for summer.

Betty White Style: Jerry Leigh Announces Betty White Collaboration
Betty White finally has thrown down into the fashion world with some new casual apparel. I love it. The latest cool celebrity in fashion is not from The Hills, The Kardashians or one of The Real Housewives Shows, it's fabuless senior style with Betty. Jerry Leigh Apparel has just announced their partnership with actress and animal health and welfare advocate Betty White. Yes, Jerry Leigh has beat all comers to an exclusive license in the apparel category to the actress' likeness. But wait, there's more. This is no ordinary style accessory, its high tech too.

The Eternal Quest for CocoLess: Vintage Chanel at RueLaLa on July 22nd
If you are a regular reader of The Recessionista, then you know, I have er, a little Chanel problem. The problem is my lust for the luxury of Chanel fashion without the luxury price tag. Of course, Chanel did say that luxury should remain invisible, but when it depletes your bank account and leads to excess spending, it is hard to not see it. Lately, I have been very successful picking up vintage Chanel pins and clothing items at auctions and consignment stores. One of the reason I love Chanel is that her designs transcend time. Her fashions are timeless. Her little black dress from the 1920s still works today. Because of the quality with which the items are made, vintage Chanel and pre-owned Chanel usually withstands the test of time. The pieces age very well, almost as if they were dipped in the fountain of fashion youth.
Because of my eternal quest for Chanel for less, which I call living CocoLess, I am excited to report that online shopping club Rue La La is partnering with Madison Avenue Couture for an exclusive boutique offering an assortment of new and barely used vintage Chanel apparel, footwear, handbags, jewelry and accessories. Rue La La will bring the sale live to its members this Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. ET. The boutique will run for 48 hours, where members can enjoy prices up to 70% off retail. If you are not already a member of Rue La La, you might want to sign up, so you are ready to cruise the sale on Thursday. Click here to use my invite if you are not already a member. Unfortunately, the sale is only open to US residents.
Here's a little sneak preview from Rue La La of the items on the sale:
* Chanel Vintage Black Leather and Satin Camellia-Shape Evening Bag with chain strap
* Chanel Taupe Lambskin Ruffled Vest with black net lining and logo buttons
* Chanel White Silk Mini Dress with Black Camellia "Confetti" allover appliqué
In the interests of full disclosure, I also get a shopping credit at Rue La La if you sign-up and buy something from my invitation. You also get shopping credits if you join and invite your friends. This is the power of aggregate buying. When we buy as a community, everyone saves. Even on Coco Chanel!

The Diana Dresses Premiere at the Fashion Museum in Bath, England
A rare exhibit has just opened in the amazing Fashion Museum in Bath, England, The Diana Dresses. These are some of the formal gowns worn by the Princess of Wales, the most hunted woman of the modern age. I so loved Diana's style. I was fascinated by her in her brief lifetime, and I continue to be fascinated by her over 10 years later. Sadly, her beauty and style, were key factors in the press and the Paparazzi' s continual hunt of her, and their desire to take her picture.
I've been enjoying the exhibit through the magic of the Internet and video from the BBC. The exhibit is amazing as it brings together dresses from private collections into one place at this amazing little museum in the charming town of Bath. These are the dresses that Diana auctioned for charity shortly before her death. During the 16 years that Diana was in the public eye she took quite an amazing fashion journey. From a shy school teacher wearing a dress off the rack bought at Harrod's to Haute Couture style. Some of her earlier dresses even recall the empire styles of Bath's most famous author, Jane Austen. I can definitely imagine Jane or Elizabeth Bennett from Austen's Pride and Prejudice wearing some of Diana's early, ruffled, frilly gowns.
But Diana did not stay the demure, young innocent and the dresses tell the fascinating story of her transformation. The exhibit includes evening dresses by the amazing British designer Catherine Walker and little black cocktail dresses by designers such as Versace from the mid 1990s. To me, one of the most fascinating things about viewing the dresses is how ordinary some of them look without her wearing them. It's an important reminder about how fashion is about personality and expression. For a woman who was often not allowed to raise her voice as Princess of Wales, she did a lot of talking through her dresses and personal style. Who can forget the off the rack "revenge dress" by Christina Stambolian that she wore the day after Charles declared his adultery of British TV? Such a subtle dig without saying a word.
The low cut, off the shoulder black dress Diana wore was copied and replicated all over the world. The replica which sold for $495 is sold out online.
The Diana Dresses exhibition opened at the Fashion Museum on Saturday July 17, 2010 and continues until January 9, 2011. The Museum is open daily 10.30-5pm, exit 6pm. For more information visit the Fashion Museum website at http://www.fashionmuseum.co.uk. If you planning a vacation to the UK, and you are a fashionista, you'll want to see The Diana Dresses and the Grace Kelly exhibit at the V&A. Viewing the dresses in an inexpensive way to savor real style without splurging.

It's worth doing a few things to keep your face and skin beautiful, especially if they are offered free of charge!
So here's what you need to do to get your free Night Repair this Thursday night. This special offer just came in my American Express Membership Rewards newsletter and I immediately signed up. I am a card member and a practicing Membership Rewards points compiler/hoarder. I'm also heading to the BlogHer conference in NYC in August, so I signed up for this immediately. From now until September 5, 2010, American Express Card members heading to the BlogHer conference, traveling or living in New York City, who use their card for charges can get double their Membership Rewards points at 450 attractions, restaurants, hotels, museums and more in New York City. What a good way to stretch your dollars and your buying power. I should know. I've been enjoying my new home entertainment center purchased with my American Express Membership Rewards. Sure it takes awhile to accumulate points, but when you consider a trip with airfare, hotel stays and meals, those points pile up. New York, I love you , but you are a pricey city! Native New Yorkers may also want to take advantage of this offer too to maximize their dollars. To sign-up for this offer for Double Points and get all the details, visit the American Express enrollment form.
To find out where you can get Double Points, at hotels, restaurants and more in NYC, go to : http://www.nycgo.com/getmorenyc. Click here to see the Hotel deals. I'm already thinking ahead to Fashion Week. My evil plan, accumulate some points at BlogHer to help defray Fashion Week or other vacation expenses. As Ben Franklin said, " A penny saved is a penny earned." In my vocabulary that would be a dollar spent is two membership rewards points earned (or thereabouts.)
PS-- If you're heading to BlogHer, note the New York Hilton, and it's restaurant, Etrusca, are on the double points plan.
Note to the FTC, this is not a sponsored post, and I don't make any $$ for letting my readers know about this deal, although I have worked with American Express in the past on a home entertainment redo with AMEX points. I signed up for it, and am just passing along what I think is a good deal.

Treesje Handbags on Sale at Billion Dollar Babes
I've been lusting for a Treesje Handbag ever since I interviewed the designer, Laura Darrah back in March at Saks in Beverly Hills. This small boutique line of handbags is designed by two Los Angeles designers, Laura Darrah and Shelia Nizzarian. When I interviewed Laura and I learned how these two designers were able to launch their collection of bags and gain such an elite cliente. Laura told me, "We meet as bridesmaids at a friend's wedding. We named our handbag line, Treesje, after the friend." The line was launched in 2005, and one of the first to discover it was LA trendsetter Lauren Conrad. She started carrying the bags before she was on the hit show The Hills. She loved the uniqueness of the bags. Since then,. many celebs have carried the bags including Nicky Hilton and Jennifer Aniston. And now, you might be able to splurge on one for non-celebrity prices. The bags are on sale over at Billion Dollar Babes through tomorrow. I'm upset, as I was not quick enough to purchase, my favorite, the Jovi bag, for $129.00!(silly social life and family obligations, interfering with shopping.) Click here to join Billion Dollar Babes and check out the Treesje selection. In the interests of full disclosure, I do earn a referral fee at Billion Dollar Babes, if you join and shop. However, referral fee of no, I only post the stuff I think is a good deal, and this is one. Check the prices at Saks vs. Billion Dollar Babes on Treesje and you'll see what I mean. If you like Treesje, check for a few of the bags on sale at the Nordstrom's Anniversary sale.

Deals from some favorite print magazines: Oprah and ELLE
Although I am a big lover of online and social media, I also take the time each week to reach some of my favorite magazines and look at the new fashions and deals. Some of my favorites are ELLE, Oprah, People StyleWatch and of course Vogue. This month two print magazines have deals you should definitely check out. The August Oprah magazine issue is called "The Big Deals Issue." Oprah and Gail have gone recessionista this month. I had to laugh at the article about Gail shopping the outlets at Woodbury Commons. Some of us have been outlet shopping for years. Having said that, there are a some very good deals in Oprah's August issue. Here are a few that I like.
- Discounts on Calvin Klein Dresses, use code CALVINDRESS25 at calvinklein.com
- Oprah's cover look, and link to where to find all the pieces including the chic bracelets from Henri Bendel.
- Discounts on high-end beauty products like Moulton Brown and my beloved Diptyque candles at beautyhabit.com. Use code OPRAH to get 25% off
- Enter to win a $5,000 home decorating spree from online shopping club OneKingsLane.com
- Deals from one of our favorite shopping clubs, IDEELI. Check out the invite on the right, under The Recessionista's Top Picks, if you are not already a member. Other shopping clubs I love like Gilt Groupe and RueLaLa are also featured in O's August issue.
Over at ELLE.com, the magazine has opened a section of their website that features editors' picks called Edit. You can shop online at ELLE.com/edit. When you shop, you receive $50.00 off your first purchase. The prices are not cheap, but they are cheaper than retail. You'll find high-end designer clothes, accessories and jewelry. Even the high-end Temple St. Clair is featured on Edit. You can also shop Edit from your Mobile phone. Just in case you need a quick shopping fix while you are away from the computer.
For a few more deals, take a look at People StyleWatch's deals shopping section. TGIF!

Alison Lewis Dress Sneaks into Target in Stealth Mode
Alison Lewis is an up and coming NY designer, and creator of vintage inspired print dresses and tops. Her label Lewis was recently selected for the CFDA's NYC Fashion Incubator program. I've heard that items from her Lewis line retail for about $400 US. But quelle surprise her Target dress retails for $89.99. That is rather pricey for Target, but their designer lines have been going up in price. So, who knew Alison Lewis was doing a deal with Target to design an exclusive, limited edition dress? Not me. Maybe some print fashion magazines, that get exclusives. Bloggers, like me, find this stuff via Google Alerts, and wonder why? The above dress is Alison Lewis for Target. The print is colorful umbrellas dancing across a chiffon, floaty dress.
Amazingly for Target, the dress is 100% silk chiffon and is dry clean only. The print is inspired by a 1964 French film, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg or The Umbrellas of Cherburg starring Catherine Deneuve. The film is a musical, and was rather unique when it was released. Most people don't necessarily break into song over unwanted teen pregnancies, but then again, when it's Catherine Deneuve, the plot is secondary in my opinion.
More people in the United States probably know about the dress being at Target than the French film it pays homage to, and that is not saying a lot :) Forty years plus later, who knew a homage would come sneaking into Tar-jay in stealth mode? Of course, if you read the Target online reviews, then you know a Target reviewer does watch French films and knows that the Umbrella print, is from a French film classic. The same reviewer also reads Lucky Magazine!
Having said that, the dress is cute and is almost sold out. The two online reviews are good, but has anyone seen this frock in person? Although it is inspired by a French film, it looks very 1960s English to me. Very Celia Birtwell, especially the tie-bow. (Postscript: I ordered the dress, and I am returning it. The print is adorable, but the fit is poor, with a very small opening for the head, and a quirky design. Shame, as the pictures were so cute.)
Ps--there is another designer secret at Target too, check out the Exclusive Geren Ford Dress in the Red Hot Shop for $89.99. Check out Geren Ford's Facebook group for the offer of a belt to go with her Target dress, good until July 15th.

Kohl's Back to School Savings and School Giving Program
If you haven't checked out Kohl's lately, they just stocked in some super stuff for heading back to school this fall. My ten year old niece is in love with their Candie's Ruffled tops, Mudd separates and Abbey Dawn line. According to her, no one wears dresses to school anymore, it's just not cool. Go figure! She's also loving her school backpack and new Speedo swimsuit (good for swim team practice.) Older kids can also benefit from the fashions and savings. For those heading to college, check out the ELLE line, Lauren Conrad and the all denim/jeans.
There are also plenty of items that are great fits for space savings in dorm rooms, like closet organizers, bedding, storage bins, chairs and floor cushions. And who can forget two essential dorm room college essentials: the coffee maker and the popcorn maker. Be sure and stock up on those, on sale now. I don't think I could've made it through school without those.
Best of all, Kohl’s has developed a contest to give half a million dollars to 20 schools each this year, a total of $10 million. The $10 million donation comes from the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program, which sells special merchandise, including plush toys and books, and donates 100 percent of the net profit to benefit children’s health and education initiatives nationwide. See Official Rules at www.facebook.com/kohls for all program and prizing details. Nothing like a good cause!

Los Angeles Shopping Club Bergine offers Luxury for Less, 7/14 Deal at Agua Spa at The Mondrian
On the look out for luxury deals for less? Well, good news. Los Angeles has a new shopping resource called Bergine that features fabuless deals. Recent deals have included tea in Beverly Hills, facials at Sonya Dakar and dinners at Chaya Brasserie. Bergine does not charge for membership nor require an invitation to sign up. Bergine has been on my radar since it opened for business last month, although I must confess that I have not yet tried the club. However, tomorrow they have a very tempting offer for those of us living in LA, or traveling to Los Angeles soon. On Wed, July 14th, Bergine will be offering a special discounted package of Five St. Tropez Body Scrubs and Five Full Body Bronzing Treatments at the highly rated Agua Spa at the Mondrian hotel for just $165.00 (retail price is $625.00.) This offer is really tempting, but it will be even more tempting for readers of The Recessionista. If you use code “RecessionistaShops” at checkout, you'll save another discount of $15.00 off on this package. The code is good for a one time use.
How good is this deal? You get 10 treatments for $150.00, or $15.00 per treatment. Plus, you get to hang out at the Agua Spa at the uber chic Mondrian and use their facilities. The Mondrian is also home to Skybar and Asia de Cuba, two LA hot spots, just in case you want to make a pit stop post treatment for an adult beverage or some dinner.
If spray tans and spa scrubs are not your thing, keep your eye on Bergine. New deals are advertised each week. When you sign up, you'll receive email alerts letting you know the deals. Plus, new cities are coming soon, like New York and San Francisco. Bergine is the brainchild of husband and wife duo Ian Picache and Patricia Calfee. Together, they personally select exclusive offers from top health, beauty, food, beverage and lifestyle brands, providing access to daily offers that are available at a limited quantity for 24 hours, and an ongoing stable of offers that are available for up to a one-week period.
“Los Angeles was a natural fit for Bergine, says Calfee, co-founder of Bergine. with its vast selection of chic spa, salon, epicurean and lifestyle experiences. We’ve forged partnerships with the most desirable brands and services offered in the area and are excited to introduce our members to the exclusive opportunities our partners are making available to us.” As some of you know, living in Los Angeles is not cheap, so it's good to have resources like Bergine to have you enjoy at the city has to offer for less. Leave a comment and let me know if you try it.

Bergdorf Goodman's Designer Sale: 60 % Off Online and In Store
For those of us still struggling with shopping addiction, and that would be me, it's time to check out the Designer Sale at Bergdorf Goodman. Although I window shop plenty at Bergdorf when I am in NY, I don't really hit the buy button until the word sale is waived before me, like a red flag in front of a bull. For The Recessionista, it's got to be either a sale at Bergdorf or a Membership Rewards gift certificate from American Express that lures me in to buy in the venerable old New York store.
Of course the word sale means so many things to different retailers :) For Bergdorf Goodman shoppers, these are not exactly bargain base prices. There are still many items for well over $1,000 US. However, there are a few items from great designers for several hundred dollars reduced from several thousand. I'm checking out a latest sale items from Jill Sander, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti , Roland Mouret, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Lanvin, Pringle of Scotland, Alexander McQueen and even my bĂȘte noire Stella McCartney. Note, there are some good prices on Stella McCartney at the sale. I'd rather invest in good, high-end designer wear on sale than the forthcoming pieces in the 80's looking Material Girl by Madonna collection coming to Macy's soon. Enuff said.
Remember to sort the Bergdorf Goodman sale online by price for the best deals. The technology does help the price savvy shopper :) Also, check the 5F section of the website for great deals on Nanette Lepore, and one of my favorites, Milly.

STELLLA!!!!! How do you spell Sale? 60% off at Stella McCartney
So I got all excited today, because Stella McCartney is having a sale. I love, love her clothes, so I thought this was a good chance to snap up some treasures. Wrong. I did better shopping Stella at the Harvey Nichols London sale two years ago. Above is my object of desire, the stripped hibicus tee, retail price $475.00, now marked down to $199.00. Although the shirt has great styling, I just can't bring myself to spend that much. Especially, when there is a doppleganger over at Kohl's. Although the Lauren Conrad collection can't hold a candle to the designs of Ms. McCartney, her striped tee with flower overlay is only $19.99.
Maybe the Blogger over at Goop went for the $199.00 version, (may have even received if for free) but to me that's Chanel money. In the words of Stanley Kowalski, "Stelll---a--ah.." your sale is enough to me cry like a wounded animal. I mean have have mercy, even the cool Meat Free Monday tee with the Linda McCartney print is over $200.00. Hundreds for Coco style, not for T-shirts! Of course, I will be setting up an eBay alert for the Stella Tee, and if I find it at the right price, I just might indulge.
PS--Anybody ever seen any FTC disclosure type language over at Goop from the Blogger? Anything about getting samples? Just say'in.

The Latest Celebrity Designer: Isabella Rossellini for Bulgari
Last week in Paris Actress and Model Isabella Rossellini became the latest celebrity to go designer. She has lent her name and classic beauty to a line of handbags from the luxury retailer, Bulgari. I thought Isabelli was always the epitome of style and good taste when she was the face of Lancome, and she lends the same cache to this new Bulgari bag. It reminds me of the Kelly bag, named for another actress, Grace Kelly. And it is just as handsome.
But how much is it? Brace yourself, I hear the prices range from $1,700 US to $2,600 US. That's quite a chunk of change in this down economy. I wonder if Posh Spice will ask for one to carry? :) Have any of you seen this bag? Will it be the latest "IT" bag, or end up on eBay in a year? Stay tuned. The bag is expected in stores July 15th. Methinks Bulgari decided to invest in accessories, just in case sales of luxury jewelry don't continue to grow. After all, Isabella's bag is much lower-priced than much of the Bulgari jewelry.
