Think Pink: Designer Shirts and Special Events to Benefit Breast Cancer Research

Pictured: Donna Karan's "Key to the Cure "shirt for Saks Fifth Avenue retails for $35.00.

In case you haven't heard, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many designers and makers of beauty products are coming together to raise awareness with special products to benefit the cause. This year Donna Karan has designed a very special long sleeved Tee Shirt for Saks Fifth Ave.  I love the feminine pink cotton candy swirls on the Donna Karan shirt circling the message to find  the cure.  Even better than the amazing design, 100% of the price of the shirt, $35.00 US, will go to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Props to Saks and Donna Karan for such a generous show of support.

A more upscale shirt, with an upscale price to match, is offered by Anne Fontaine to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  The shirt is fittingly called "Susan" and is a fuchsia pink color with Anne's typical tailoring. The shirt retails for $225.00 and will be sold at Anne Fontaine boutiques worldwide. From October 1 through October 31, 2010, Anne Fontaine will donate 20% of the retail price of each “Susan” blouse sold and will donate a guaranteed minimum of $5,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in connection with this program.
In addition, Anne Fontaine will host a one day only event on October 7th at its  25 retail locations donating 10% of all in-store purchases to Komen for the Cure.  Below is a picture of the "Susan Blouse." You won't blend into the crowd in this pink shirt!

Pictured: Anne Fontaine's Susan blouse, is a shocking bring pink

If you're in the market for some new lipsticks, check out Estée Lauder's "Think Pink" trio of pink lipsticks and crystal studded pink ribbon pin.  Estée Lauder will donate $500,000 US in proceeds from it's "Pink Ribbon Collection" to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Estée Lauder is also sponsoring special events this month featuring actress Elizabeth Hurley.  Here's the schedule for New York and London:

Estée Lauder Illumination Events
October 1, 2010, New York City, The Empire State Building
Illumination of the Empire State Building and the Guinness World Record Presentation with Evelyn H. Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley

October 19, 2010, London, England
Harrods

1:00PM Personal Appearance with Elizabeth Hurley to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the 50th anniversary of Estée Lauder at Harrods

7:00PM Illumination of Harrods by Evelyn H. Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the 50th anniversary of Estée Lauder at Harrods.

Look for more specials throughout the month from retailers that will benefit your fashion wallet.  But most important, remember to make an appointment for a mammogram and do you own exams.

Pictured: Linda McCartney at the Oscars in Los Angeles, 1973.  I think of her during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and make a donation for research to find a cure.

Last week was Linda McCartney's birthday. She would've been 69 years old.  She is definitely gone too soon because of breast cancer.  Don't forget Lady Linda.  It's very important to stay vigilant and take charge of your health until a cure is found.

From the Pages of People: Brad Knows How to Quit Rachel Zoe

Pictured: Rachel and Brad at LA's Project Angel Food Benefit earlier this year.

This just in.  Yes, this isn't Brokeback Mountain, and Brad does know how to quit Rachel Zoe.   According to the the bible of all things celebrity related, People Magazine, the spilt is amicable. Brad is outtie to pursue his own career, and Rachel understands that he needs to leave the nest. Unlike the vicious war of the words with previous departee, "Tay",  Brad's parting seems to be sealed with kisses, hugs and some very "major" words.  “I love Rachel and she’s taught me everything I know,” Goreski, 33, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “But there’s a point where either I do it now or I’ll never know what it’s like to spread my wings and soar.”

Right on Brad.  The show is too much drama for the mama.  And frankly, it's starting to feel contrived.   There's always a crisis to get the right dress for the right celebrity.  And the crisis is treated with the earnestness of shipping arms to Iraq.  Like, no one's life depends on getting the right dress. I feel sorry  for the viewers, since Brad always provided the sweetness and good humor on  the show to help balance the narcissistic nonsense that went on. Case in point, the riduculous Fashion for Haiti benefit episode with Naomi Campbell checking on the poor show table.   Rach, Brad,  OMG! some people in Haiti are wearing coke bottles smashed into shoes tied to their feet with string.  Your dedication to finding Louboutins for models to wear at a  "charity" runway show was way over the top. Without Brad, it's going to be very hard to make this drivel watchable.

Brad, this is a good move for you.  I hope you move over to a fashion design house and spread your wings.  I could see you putting on some amazing runways shows with style and dignity. Please, leave the tears behind at team Zoe and ring up Burberry or Armani as quick as you can. Brad, go to a fashion house and you will totally shut it down!!! But in a good way :)

The Limited Special Offer: 30% off on the Jodi Arnold Fall Collection

Good news if you're starting to look around for Holiday party wear.  The amazing Jodi Arnold Fall collection has just been reduced by 30%.  I reviewed the collection when it launched on August 8th, and it's divine.  The inspriration for the pieces was 1920s glamour and Jodi's trademark embellishments combine well with the period feel.  My top picks for the sale, at the Cabaret Tunic and the Embellished Jacket.  You can't go wrong with these pieces.  They can take you from the office, to after office going out.  And check the reader reviews.  They are rated 5 stars!  That's good enough for me.

The  breathtaking boyfriend jacket has "studded" details around the collar that you will fall in love with. Remember to check The Limited Facebook group for coupons to use to bring those prices down below further.

For more Jodi Arnold news, check out her new website design featuring her online magazine "Shared Discovery." Shared Discovery is a daily source of Joid's perspective on art, music, books, and other culturally relevant topics.  The magazine is a way of engaging customers in the movement of ideas, and an ongoing narrative of the hidden cultural gems that motivate the designer and spark the creativity behind her designs.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire Spawns Merchandising, a Contest and Hotel Deals

Have any of you been watching the new HBO series "Boardwalk Empire." There have only been two episodes to date, but so far the story is compelling.  The series takes the era of prohibition and what F. Scott Fitzgerald called the "lost generation" (meaning all the young men returning from the war forever changed) to a whole new level.  It's almost like a vintage Sopranos with crime bosses, killings, and soap opera like intrigue. The show is every bit as violent.  For me, the most compelling reason to watch the show is the performance of Steve Buscemi as the crime boss Nucky Thompson.  Nucky has so many sides.  He can help a poor woman, and at the same time, rub out her no good husband leaving her a widow with two small children,  But somehow you know that widow, Margaret Schroeder, will not go uncared for so long as Nucky is around. I'm wondering if Mr. Schroeder will end up taking the place of Nucky's departed wife, Mabel, and giving Nucky a little extra respectability.  So how does the "Boardwalk Empire" fit in with The Recessionista, and our dedication to finding deals? Easy, right now, HBO is offering some tremendous deals in cooperation with Harrah's to promote the series.   Here's how you can get a little vacation at 1920s prices.

HBO partner Caesars Atlantic City and parent company Harrah’s Entertainment are offering special “Boardwalk Empire” promotions. These deals might just help to further revitalize the once glamorous playground of the East Coast. Click here to see Boardwalk Empire packages around the US.

And what would a proper marketing plan be without a sweepstakes powered by an interactive website? Visit the Boardwalk Empire interactive, Prohibition-themed website (www.BoardwalkEmpireAC.com) to view trailers from the series, learn about special Boardwalk offers and enter to win the “Boardwalk Empire” Sweepstakes. One lucky winner will “live like the king of the boardwalk” with access to his or her own personalized suite at Caesars Atlantic City for a full year. Five first prize winners will receive “Boardwalk Empire” weekends at Caesars, including airfare, limo transportation between New York and Atlantic City, suite accommodations, a “stocked bar,” a Bloomingdale’s shopping spree and dinner at McCormick & Schmick’s.

Chris Spadaccini, Vice President Advertising and Promotions, HBO, explains this marketing strategy by noting, “When it came time to develop a marketing strategy for the series, we looked for partners whose history and brand aligned with the period or illustrated an important theme within the series.  The partnership with Bloomingdale’s allows us to promote Boardwalk Empire and their Fall line inspired by the 1920s  in a unique and unprecedented way."

If you're in New York City, check out the store windows at Bloomingdale's New York and the 1920s inspired scenes in the windows. “Boardwalk Empire” cast members Michael K Williams and Vincent Piazza are also featured on the cover of Bloomies fall Men’s Catalogue.  Look for the catalogue in the stores.  I wonder if the real-life crime boss,  Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, who the character of Nucky Thompson is based on,  shopped at Bloomingdales for his suits. It was there when he was running Atlantic City.

Coming Up: QVC shoe sale to feature Fergie Footwear + more

Save these dates if you love shoes. QVC is about to put on a fantabulous shoe sale that might even fill the overcrowded Imelda Marcos's shoe closet.   QVC present will “FFANY Shoes on Sale.” What is FFNY? Elementary my dear fashionista, it's the The Fashion Footwear Association of New York.   They were having a big shoe event at the New York Hilton during the BlogHer conference in August, so I got the scoop on this one.   So here are the detials. On Oct. 13th QVC and FFANY will feature live in person shoe shopping, plus cocktails at Federick P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center.

Then on Oct. 15th, the sale will come to the rest of the world, via QVC and their website.  The sale will include the newly launched Fergie Footwear brand. Fergie, of The Black Eyed Peas, was just here in LA at Fashion's Night Out showing off the shoes at Nordstrom's.  The purpose of the QVC sale is to raise funds in the the fight against breast cancer. The Hope shoe, from Fergie’s Fall 2010 collection, pictured below, will be available during the QVC presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale” event benefiting breast cancer research on October 15th.

Fergie's pink "Hope" shoe  retails for $45 (half its original retail price) and 100% of the net proceeds will go to breast cancer research.  You can see the style on Nordie's website listed as the Fergie 'Tazed' Platform Pump, retailing for approximately $90.00.  Reviewers gave the shoes good marks for style, but noted that they run small.  So size up when you buy the half price version. Just my two cents-- no one needs "cruel shoes."

More than 100,000 pairs of shoes, donated by footwear companies, will be sold on QVC at half the retail price, with 100% of the net proceeds going to leading hospitals and research organizations nationwide that are performing cutting edge research and education to find a cure for breast cancer.  To date, “Shoes on Sale” has sold more than one million pairs of shoes and donated more than $32.5 million in net proceeds to breast cancer research. So if you need some new shoes, QVC is the place to be on Oct. 15th.

Target's Electronics Trade-in Program: Some Good Deals

Yesterday I was at my local Target store running an errand, when I decided to bop over to the Electronics section of the store and see what was new in mobile technology. Well, you might ask, what is a die hard fashionista like myself doing shopping for technology instead of clothes? The truth is in my world of blogging, tweeting and shopping, technology and fashion have become tightly entwined.  Mobile technology is now part of my savings kit.  I check prices online, and compare deals while shopping.  I also Tweet with others about deals and coupons while in store.

So if you're like me, and you rely on mobile technology , you'll want to check out Target's electronics trade-in program coupled with their deals on Smartphones, iPhone and Samsung Devices.  I haven't had a new Blackberry since 2007, so I was thrilled to see  Target offering a new Blackberry Curve 8250 for just $29.99 through AT&T wireless.  I qualified for the deal since my contract had expired and it was time to renew.  Renewing for another 2 years gave me the new phone/messaging device for under $30.00.  And even better, I traded in my 2007 Blackberry Curve 8220 and received a gift card worth $44.00  for other  Target electronic purchases.  So basically, I covered the costs on the new phone (but not the sales tax!) with my trade-in.  If you're a fashionista, or just a savvy shopper, I recommend you check out the Target Trade-in Program.

According to Target, "Target Mobile offers a convenient in-store and online cellular shopping experience. Target Electronics Trade-In will allow guests to receive credit towards any Target purchase by turning in their new or used video games, mobile phones and iPods. "  The program has been available in California since the end of August.  It's expected to be available in over 850 Targets by 2011.  Click here for the details.

The only downside to the program is the time I spent in line waiting at Target to get my new phone configured with my existing cellular account...that took 45 minutes.  It took 45 minutes for the customer ahead of me to get their phone too.  You'll hear the subliminal Jeopardy tick-tock clock ticking as you stand in line waiting.  Evidently the new computer system Target is using is very temperamental and and not user friendly.  Doing the trade-in was much quicker and took only 5 minutes. So if you need a new cell phone, and you got some time and considerable patience, check the Target program.  Just bring some coffee while you wait, because it won't be a quick purchase! :) Don't go when you are in a hurry, or have scheduled appointments.

For more Target trade-in savings, check out their program with Nextworth.  You can bring in CDs, DVDs, old cameras and other gadgets and get a Target gift card.  Use the gift cards for the next Target Designer or some Temple St. Clair.   The program benefits shoppers and the environment.  I'm going to start rounding up some old gadgets, to trade them in for a gift card for a Target Mulberry bag.  That's the way we do it! Money for nothing and your bags for free.

Special Event, DKNY Madison Ave. Sept. 30th: An Author's Life with Multiple Sclerosis

I love special events to help special causes.  Even better if they help me with my shopping.  Here's one that fits the bill. If you're in NYC on Sept. 30th, you're invited to stop in to shop at the Donna Karan New York (DKNY) store on Madison Ave. for a book signing.  DKNY & the National MS Society are hosting a special event on Thursday, September 30th to celebrate the critically acclaimed memoir "Awkward Bitch, My Life with MS" by author Marlo Donato Parmelee.  This is a true, and inspiring story!  In 2004 at the age of 32, fashionista and musician Marlo Donato Parmelee was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She candidly chronicles her personal journey in accepting the diagnosis in her memoir.  Listen to Marlo's vlogs about her battles with MS – among other topics – on her YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/teslagirlm.

The event is from 6-8 PM.  Marlo will read a special excerpt from her book, while you enjoy some Bubbly and Canapes.  But wait, there is more.  Customers will receive a 10% discount on the their DKNY purchases and DKNY will donate 10% of the evening's proceeds to the NYC - Southern NY chapter of the National MS Society.  Kudos to DKNY for offering a nice discount for the evening, and for helping to bring this special store to our attention.

Juicy Couture Partners with Erin Fetherston for a Holiday Collection

Whimsical designer Erin Fetherston made a special appearance in the Los Angeles area today at Neiman- Marcus, Topanga,  to show off her new Holiday Collection for Juicy Couture.  Some of you may remember the super-talented Erin's Holiday Collection for Target a few years ago.   It was truly adorable.  I'm still wearing her 1920's inspired winter white Target coat with the amazing shawl collar and covered buttons.

Pictured: Erin Fetherston's Black Velvet Holiday Party Dress for Juicy Couture.

Now Juicy Couture, owned by Liz Clairborne, has hired Erin to elevate their holiday clothing. One thing is for sure, Erin's 11 piece collection for Juicy won't feature any velour pants with the words "Juicy" of the back side.  Thank god for small favors.  Instead you'll find holiday bling and cheer in the form of jewelry, silky blouses and velvet dresses.  The collection will range in price from $216 to $688.  This explains why the line will be sold at high-end department stores like Neiman-Marcus.  If you want a special holiday dress, and budget is not an obstacle, look for Erin's Juicy collection at Neiman's and Bloomingdales. For lower-priced Erin Fetherston, check out her Edition collection for QVC.  Some of the pieces are on clearance, and they are really well priced.  The Edition line  for QVC features her trademark touches, like the built-in necklace, embellishments and ruffles.   I'm glad to see several different price and style options available for buying Erin Fetherston clothing off the rack.

You are invited to London Fashion Week to watch the Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2011 Runway show

Can't afford a trip to London Fashion Week? Well, you can still catch a show, and one of the best.  Watch Burberry Prorsum Spring 2011 Runway show right here on The Recessionista.  And just a bit of trivia from my English relatives, Prorsum is Latin for "forwards."  So forward we go to London Fashion Week. Right now, if you're traveling to the UK, the weakness of the British Pound brings you a better deal on Burberry or other English designers. I buy a bit of Burberry, pre-owned, on sale, at the outlet or via eBay.  There's always a way to find the best for less.

Now to see the Burberry show, here are the show times for Tues., Sept. 21 as follows:
  • 4:00 pm London,  4:00 pm Dublin
  • 5:00 pm Paris
  • 11:00 am New York, EST
  • 8:00 am  Los Angeles PST
  • 10:00 am Dallas,  CST
  • Melbourne, 1:00 am.
Wherever you are in the world, you can enjoy the show, and join the conversations on Twitter from @Burberry or using the hastag #LFW. Simply click on the arrow on the player to watch the show. Enjoy! They always have the best runway music.  I loved the use of the song "White Lions" by The Maccabees on The Art of the Trench website and previous  Burberry runway shows.

Giveaway: Stay Connected to Fashion + Deals with a Toshiba Portege R705 loaded with Windows 7

And it came to pass that in the social media era, I ventured forth to the BlogHer conference New York City and sought my fortunes. Thus, I sallied forth from Los Angeles with empty pockets and high hopes.  I sought the coolest new technology, the most Twitterific communications and of course the best deals in New York City.  My champagne wishes and recessionista dreams were rewarded, and I won a new Toshiba Portege mini-laptop loaded with Windows 7. But wait, there's more.  I actually won two! Yes, one for me, and one for you dear reader!  As I've said before here on the blog, I can't help anyone until I help myself.  So, I have my Portege, and frankly, I am in love with it.  It's so portable I can take it with me anywhere I go from Fashion Shows, to special events to intensive Tweet-ups.  Even better, I can be virtually anywhere with it.  Like watching London Fashion Week today via my laptop, or chatting with Christopher Bailey ( you know that guy that seems to have all the innovative ideas @Burberry.) I can also communicate from anywhere to anywhere via Web cam and built in Microphone.  It's not the Art of the Trench, it's the Art of Being Everywhere Recessionista Style.  How else can you see the world, attend fashion shows and meet top designers on a low-budget.  Easy, technology.  Here's are a few things I've been doing to power the blog with the goodies in Windows 7, and coincidentally, these were my answers in the Windows 7 contest run by Microsoft at BlogHer which lead to my fantastic Toshiba Portege score:

  • Using Windows 7  Live Writer to add the copyright watermark to some of my pictures on The Recessionista
  •  Using Window 7 Photo Gallery to resize and touch up photos. I can also merge several photos together into one master shot, so I can get the best photo of everyone and everything :)
  • Using Windows 7 to preview all the windows I have open
All answers were Tweeted via my crackberry while shopping in the NY Garment District. Cool enough for you? :) So I got mine, how do you get yours?  Easy. You will  enter my little Social Media contest here on the blog to try to win your own Toshiba Portege R705.  Here's how:

Getting on my Vintage Vogue for the Los Angeles Blogger Prom

Extra, Extra, the Blogger Prom is coming up this week in Los Angeles. To my surprise, I'm getting really excited about it.  Why? Well, I will get to meet some local bloggers whose blogs I read regularly, have an amazing dinner in the Hollywood Hills at Yamashiro, and...wait for it...dress in 1940's Vintage Style!  That is really my favorite part.  I just love Vintage clothes. Bloggers who do not dress according to the theme won't be admitted.  It's serious George Hurrell Vintage Vogue time.   Yesterday. I spent the afternoon getting my vintage shop on. Now, I have to do a show and tell of all the treasures I found at my local thrift stores: the Palos Verdes Resale store and the Salvation Army.  If you are in the Los Angeles area, you will want to give these places a look.

My top pick from my Blogger Prom expedition is the Palos Verdes Resale store for  rare vintage treasures that benefit a wide variety of charities. The store is staffed by a team of very friendly and helpful volunteers including: Carol Kubik, Betty Wall and Rosemarie. Carol Kubik is the curator of their small, but quality, vintage section.  Ask for her when you go to the store, she is extremely knowledgeable about what the store has, the stories behind the clothes, and can tell you what is in the back of the store that they haven't put out yet.  I wanted to find a Vintage Irene dress or suit for the 1940's themed prom, but Irenes can be hard to find.  I was not able to find one for this event with the right price or fit (Irenes typically go for big $$$.)  What I did find were great vintage earrings, an amazing sweater with jeweled embellishments, a gorgeous pink suit jacket with pearls sewn into the design on the the right breast pocket, a vintage handbag for $1.50 and amazing Ferragomo shoes.  Check out my haul.

Pictured: My new vintage sweater jacket with embellishments, price $32.00.  This is from the old Robinson's store and the condition is immaculate.  Check out the detail on it.

Pictured: Amazing detail on this little sweater jacket

Pictured: My new pink suit jacket with pearl embellishments.  Cost $25.00.

Pictured: My new/old vintage earrings from PV Resale, $12.00 each.  These are perfect for the 1940s look, because they are from the period.

Pictured: My new, like new, no scuffs on the soles Ferragamo shoes, for $20.00, but if you buy 1 pair you get 1 free at the store.  Not for Blogger Prom but for wear elsewhere.

Pictured: I didn't buy this, but Palos Verdes Resale has this vintage Galanos couture one piece, tuxedo suit worn by a celebrity for a special event.  It's a size 6-8 and in mint condition.  Looks circa 1980s to me.

As you can see I scored big at Palos Verdes store.  If you're in Los Angeles, you'll definitely want to check out this little gem on Pacific Coast Highway in Lomita.  It's much less expensive than many of the other stores offering vintage in Los Angeles.  And Psst, they also had a black couture jacket from Bullocks Pasadena.  Run don't walk to get it if you are a size 6 to 8 US.

My second stop was the Salvation Army store on Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance, CA.  This store is huge. There are good things and many bad things too.  You have to pick through it carefully.  And let's just say this store has no ambiance and leave it at that.  Right now they are having some amazing sales, and I did find a few things that I can use for Blogger Prom or after.  I'm probably going to wear this Black dress with white flowers, plus the open toe platform ivory shoes shown below with the black and white clip on earrings.

Pictured: 1940s style print dress and matching open toe platform shoes.  I could wear a white gardenia behind my ear, like Mo'nique did at the Academy Awards this year.  Cost: $10.00.

Pictured: 1940s style surplus bodice wrap top with pleats, this could be worn with a black slim pencil skirt with Veronica Lake style hair and a big brooch.  Cost $4.00.

As you can see, I clearly got some good deals on vintage styles. Just a little reminder about all the great pre-owned, reusable fashion available at your local thrift stores.  It make take some time, but there are treasures out there.  Be sure and explore stores in your area, and check their reviews on Yelp! These are great places to look for Halloween costumes, vintage, and everyday wear for adults and children.

Now for Blogger Prom, I just need to decide on my final look. One thing is for sure, I'll be wearing my hair in waves, rocking dark red lipstick and probably flash eyelashes.  Any other ideas?

Halloween Costume Couture: Is that an Oxymoron?

Pictured: A costume from Simon Doonan's collection for Target Halloween from the Target website.

As Halloween approaches, Target has launched a line of costumes from Barney's New York Creative Director Simon Doonan.  In their advertisements, Target is calling the line, "Costume Couture."  This has to be one of the greatest Oxymorons since English poet William Blake wrote about the "marriage hearse" in his poem London.  You know, an oxymoron, when you use two words together that are distinct opposites of each other.  To me, there is nothing "couture" about a 100% Polyester garment that bears the label "CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts Not for children under 3 yrs."  Of course, if you're in a terrible rush, and need something quick for Halloween , there are worse options than the $30.00 costumes from Simon Doonan at Target. The Candace Corn costume  (see picture above) is cute if you want to dress your daughter up as a piece of Candy Corn.  But if you want to get something that might be cheaper, and truly more fashionable, take a look at the costumes at your local Goodwill, Salvation Army , Oxfam UK or consignment/resale store.  I took a trip to one of my local shops yesterday, the Palos Verdes resale shop on Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles, and was amazed at the quality of Halloween costumes on display in natural fibers.   Most costumes as the resale shops are under $30.00 and the proceeds benefit charity.  Something to think about before you purchase a costume this year.

To see the brilliance that is Simon Doonan check out the windows at Barney's New York or Los Angeles stores.  The Target collection, well, not so much.

Burberry Gets Social for London Fashion Week with Tweets from Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer

So how does one of the world's leading fashion brands, and one of the oldest, get ready for London Fashion Week?  Maybe rehearsing the models, going to final fittings, checking the seating plan, and of course making sure the press and photographers are in place.   Those are the typical to-do's.  But in this era of social media and direct Internet communication to consumers, the Burberry brand added another item to their Fashion Week check list.  Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer has taken over the brand's Twitter account.   When I originally heard about this, I was skeptical.   Many fashion houses are just taking to the social media airwaves, and some designers don't like being the voice behind their Twitter account. Some designers delegate the Twitter account to a PR Agency to manage, and communicate with followers.  One designer told me, anonymously, of course, that she really doesn't like using Twitter to communicate with her customers.   When I asked why she said, "Because I can't say what I want to say in the format."  Yes, that would be the 140 character limit.  It's true that you can't always talk in complete sentences on Twitter.  Mastering the art of Twitter is almost like learning to speak a foreign language.  You must be succinct and crisp in your prose and use the proper hashtags in your messages. (Hashtags are a way for Twitter uses to tag their messages by names for easy search and retrieval.)  Use of the Queen's English is not a pre-requisite.

So why would a busy Creative Officer like Mr. Bailey want to take this on right before a major event like London Fashion Week I asked?   The answer, because he likes to communicate directly with consumers.  Here's what he had to say, in more than 140 characters.  "We are now as much a media-content company as we are a design company because it’s all part of the overall experience," says Christopher Bailey.  Via Twitter, Mr. Bailey answered me, as to why he is Tweeting this week, " Enjoying interaction and great to share everything that goes on pre- show / pre live stream etc.," signed CB.

Clearly, Christopher Baily gets it.  In the Internet age, to be truly successful, a brand needs to communicate with customers via traditional print channels, as well as social channels.  I love that I can hear from Christopher Bailey directly via a free tool like Twitter in real-time.  I don't have to wait for a glossy fashion magazine to arrive at the end of the month.  The print magazine's coverage, as much as I love and enjoy them, will be delivered long after the runway lights dim. It will be more of a recap, with gorgeous photos.  In contrast, the photos delivered via Twitter may not be perfectly in focus, but they will be delivered in real-time as the models are walking the runway.  Most exciting, everyone can share the show via the Internet.  No invite necessary.  The doors are open, and all the "Tweeple" are invited.  The Burberry Womenswear show will be streaming live on the Internet on Tuesday from the Burberry site and here on The Recessionista.

Pictured: Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson with her fashion accessory, Burberry Creative Chief Christopher Bailey. (picture courtesy of Burberry)

Mr. Bailey uses Social Media other than Twitter to communicate with those who wear the Burberry clothes.  He has a large Facebook following, and he speaks directly to them every week, via the Burberry Facebook group.  What is interesting about the Facebook group is the way in which he engages with consumers.   He is not just sharing fashion news, he is sharing his favorite pieces of music as well.  Via Facebook, "Burberry Acoustic" music is shared.  And apparently, Mr. Bailey is very involved in selecting the music for the Burberry runways show.   As he Tweeted via his iPhone, "Just finalised music for the show and so excited..,!" CB.  Each Tweet from the Burberry Twitter account is signed with his initials.  By sharing his musical tastes, and some free clips, Mr. Bailey is getting close to his customers by letting them enjoy the same things he enjoys.  That creates a feeling of camaraderie, that helps customers feel close to him, and the Burberry brand.  It's rather a brilliant marketing strategy. I enjoy listening to the music posted on Burberry Facebook, and it doesn't cost me a penny.

Stay tuned for more Social Media marketing from the Burberry brand.  In a few weeks, they are launching a "retail theatre concept."  According to Christopher Bailey,  "This concept allows us to broadcast our multi- faceted content all over the world, directly to our stores, creating a modern and pure brand environment. Customers at the exclusive in-store digital events will experience the clothes, the music, the energy and the atmosphere in real time and have the unique opportunity to receive their orders in just 7 weeks.“   Love the concept, but 7 weeks is still a long time in the Internet age.  Clearly, the worlds of fashion production and Internet response time are still merging.  Meanwhile, Mr. Bailey will be on Twitter at least until Tuesday taking us all "behind the seams" at London Fashion Week, Twitter hashtag #LFW.

And guess who did the  first collection? Well, it's Vera Wang for her Simply Vera Vera Wang exclusive brand at Kohl's.  This special collection is available now through December 24, 2010.

The collection includes a pink ribbon pin; graphic t-shirts; women's sleep sets with boy shorts; and sequin coin purses in various shades of pink and gray.  The coin purses look way cute and may resolve the problems of coins disappearing into the black hole in the bottom of my handbag.:)  Props to Kohl's for providing a little fashion for a good cause!

"Our successful Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program benefitting kids has raised more than $150 million over the past 10 years to support children's health and education initiatives nationwide. New York Fashion Week: Milly Spring 2011 Channels Peggy Guggeheim

Pictured: Scenes from Milly's Spring 2011 Collection at New York Fashion Week. (photo ©PatrickMcMullan)
Designer Michelle Smith sent her Spring Collection, inspired by art collector Peggy Guggenheim, down the runway at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday.  Michelle had said her collection was inspired by Peggy, and frankly, I wasn't quite sure how that would turn out. Peggy was a grand eccentric.  She was famous for wearing her custom designed bat-wing and butterfly eyeglasses, along with a slash of bright red lipstick and extravagant earrings. Never known as a trendsetter,  Peggy  G was more into art than fashion.  When it came to fashion, she would splurge every now and then on a gown by Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny.  Fortuny was famous for designing " tea gowns" which gently draped to the floor, and were free flowing with a cinched waist.  As you can see, Peggy's style is an interesting choice for any designer.  It's a bold move to model a collection on a style that outside art circles is not well recognized or known. Interestingly, Karl Lagerfeld has also been inspired by Peggy G's fashion sense. In 2009, he did a photo shoot for Harper's Bazaar showing off his interpretation of the heiress' style.

So how did Milly translate the style of Peggy G?  With a unique flair. We saw turban headbands, vintage inspired sunglasses, "tribal prints", floral prints with matching bags, lace overlay on fabric and geometric print dresses paired with solid coats.  I was most excited to see the brilliant poppy coat come to life from Milly's sketch and swatch that I had seen before the show.

Pictured: A sketch from Milly's Spring 2011 Collection (sketch courtesy of Milly NY, Michelle Smith.)

To me, the poppy coat was the show stopper of the collection with matching bag and shoes too.  See the picture below, and be dazzled!

Pictured: The wow factor, Milly's Poppy coat and bag from her Spring 2011 Collection at New York Fashion Week. (photo ©PatrickMcMullan)

Overall the collection was playful, and conveyed a European sensibility.  I don't think that all the pieces will appeal to the mass-market fashionista used to the celebrity ghosted designer clothing circuit offering little more than mini-dresses and one shoulder tops. (i.e. think fashions from the Kardashians.)  But Milly Spring 2011 offers a sense of sophistication, and classic lines.  It's as unique as it's inspiration, Miss Peggy G. Not everyone can rock a turban headband, but after checking out Milly 2011, I'm ready to give it a try.  I draw the line at eccentric butterfly sunglasses however.

I'll look forward to seeing Milly at Bloomingdale's next spring, and will be looking for it at the annual Brown Bag sale.

NYFW: Rebecca Taylor Boho Chic and Muted Colors for Spring

New Zealand designer Rebecca Taylor showed her Spring 2011 Collection on Sunday at Lincoln Center.  The color palette was mostly earthy tones, nudes and pearly greys.  But there were a few brighter pieces, like my favorite green dress above on the left.  The collection definitely mixed the chic and the funky, the crunchy and the stylish. There were belted trenchcoats along with the designer's signature silk printed dresses. Although most of the colors were neutrals there were a few splashes of kelly green, yellow, and orange. It was not predictable by any means.

Rebecca Taylor produces beautiful garments, but they are pricey.  Look for them at discounts during sales at Bloomingdale, Gilt Groupe, Saks and sometimes, Loehmann's.  I was surprised that the colors in Rebecca's collection were so, er , restrained.  But then again, I think Betsey Johnson stole all the spring colors and rolled them up into the painting on her colorful dresses. Maybe there just wasn't enough to go around? Most of the designers are showing neutrals.  Today's Narcisco Rodriguez show was all black, white, grey and just one splash or red.  It seems to be the year when Spring has not exactly sprung onto the NYC runways.

Women's Wear Daily Turns 100: Designers for WWD@100 project

Readers, do you ever check out the bible of the fashion industry? It's called Women's Wear Daily.   When you open the cover, you expect to hearing a voice crying out, " A reading from the book of fashion.  And it came to pass that in 1943, God  whispered to  Eleanor Lambert  that she needed to go forth and create New York Fashion Week." Way, way before Twitter and the Blogs, the fashion feet on the street, and the voice heard around the world was Women's Wear Daily. WWD's reporters were assigned to the back row of couture shows just like some of the Bloggers are today. Except the Bloggers get what they call "standing tickets."  Same as sitting in the back row used to be in my opinion.

So, the venerable WWD is turning 100 years old.  I think they are aging like fine wine.  I've been following their Tweets from New York Fashion Week all week.  They really have the birdeyes view of the runway proceedings. So how should we celebrate this landmark birthday.  By shopping! :) Of course.

Gilt Groupe and WWD, (Women's Wear Daily and WWD.com ) the media of record for the fashion and retail industries, have joined forces to present the Designers for WWD@100 project, which includes a sale of limited-edition pieces by 11 designers who have re-imagined iconic looks from the last century of fashion to celebrate WWD’s 100th anniversary.

“The elements of this program – collaboration with talented designers, partnership with a pioneer in online retailing, and use of social media to reward our most influential ambassador – demonstrate the incredible vitality of WWD’s 100-year-old brand,” said Melissa Brecher, Associate Publisher, Marketing for the Fairchild Fashion Group. “We hope this partnership builds on the authority WWD is known for and expands our relationships with the design and retail communities as an innovator.”

The Designers for WWD@100 sale will offer these limited-edition apparel and accessory pieces for purchase exclusively on Gilt.com from September 15 – 17, 2010 (sales starts tomorrow at 12pm EST).  If you are not already a member of Gilt, please join using my invitation to check out this shopping event.

    The selected designers are:
ADAM, ALEXANDRE BIRMAN, DANA LORENZ FOR FENTON/FALLON, DOO.RI, JASON WU, KIMBERLY OVITZ, LYN DEVON, MARCHESA, PRABAL GURUNG, PROENZA SCHOULER and THAKOON.

Be sure to click on each image during the sale to see the designer's original sketches. But wait....there is more than shopping.  There is a contest.  You know how I love me some FREE!  In addition to the sale, WWD and Gilt Groupe will award their most influential ambassador with a shopping spree. Participants will be encouraged to use social media to spread the word about the project. The person who generates the most awareness by rallying entries on WWDGiltPromo.com  will win $1,000 credit on Gilt.com .  Guess who already entered? :) Your favorite blogger, The Recessionista!

NYFW: Why Norma Kamali is not showing at New York Fashion Week

Pictured: The Fabuless One, Designer Norma Kamali  in her store in her super cool Walmart NK Collection grey fleece jacket and skirt with elephant T-shirt. (photo M. Hall)

A couple of readers have emailed me this week to ask why one of my favorite people and favorite designers, Norma Kamali is not showing at  New York Fashion Week this week. It's a really good question.  She is so brilliant, and if you have ever worn her clothes then you know how great the cut of her garments is.  I am still marveling over how wonderful her classic swimsuit looks on.  So why doesn't Norma want to put on a really big show?  She revealed why recently in a panel discussion at a New York Times' TimesTalks with reporter Eric Wilson.  Her no show stance is really a matter of her personal style, and her preference for being behind the scenes.

"We know who we are and we know what we do best. I'm a background kind of person, I'm better kind of not being noticed.... I want to do what I want to do, so I've never had partners, never had investors. For me to do it, I have to find a way to do it my way." said Norma.

I personally wish Norma would step into the limelight a bit more, but then, she might not be able to keep her prices as reasonable as they have been with her new OMA line.  After all, big fashion shows cost big money, which means higher mark-ups.  The designers have to pay for all this hoopla. With Norma, she is content to let her clothes do the talking, and what a great story they tell. Anyone can walk into her shop in New York and see her clothes anytime, with no seating arrangement and no ticket required.

NYFW Los Angeles Home Girl: Monique Lhuillier Spring 2011 at New York Fashion Week

Pictured: A spring garden blooms on a ballgown : Monique Lhuillier Spring 2011  (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

Paging Rachel Zoe...are you starting to think Oscars?  Is it time to fast forward to award dresses for your "clients? I don't want to see Brad cry ever again or Rodger kept waiting, so please check out Monique Lhuillier Spring 2011. It was all uptown chic today at New York fashion week when  Los Angeles based designer Monique Lhuillier showed her Spring collection of red carpet ready gowns at New York Fashion Week.  There were no cartwheels on the runway, just lovely colors and Scarlett O'Hara type swaying skirts.  Above is my favorite dress from the collection. Although Monique Lhuillier is not low-priced, her studio in downtown Los Angeles has been know to have some amazing sales, particularly on wedding dresses. If you live in Los Angeles, or nearby, watch for her sales. I post them here on the blog for all of you to take advantage of.  Meanwhile, check out her gowns.  I wonder who will we see on the red carpet in these?

Tucker for Target Review: Surprise a Cohesive Fall Collection

    tucker target 1
Pictured: Tucker for Target in-store and on the racks.
I had to do a little Target run tonight to do a return, and ended up checking out the new Tucker for Target line by up and coming designer, Gabby Basora. I've always liked Gabby's wistful, vintage signature prints, but to be honest I wasn't sure she would be able to translate her vision from silks to polyester for Target. While the old saying that you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear maybe true, Tucker for Target comes very close. I was prepared not to like this one.  I am tired of Target bringing in big name designers and doing launch parties with lots of marketing hype (Zac Posen) and then not delivering a quality end product.  Tucker for Target by Gabby Basora launched without celebrity fan fare, or big pop-up shops.  I believe the clothes are better for it, because the budget seems to have gone into the garments.  The prints are more vibrant and beautiful than indicated by the pictures we saw on the Gilt Groupe pre-sale or the Target website. Below are my up close pictures of the two pieces I purchased, the signature floral print blouse and the halter top in floral print.

    gaby prints
Pictured: The prints from the two blouses I purchased.

It seems that by bringing in Gabby Basora to do a collection, Target has gone back to the beginnings of what the Go line was all about, which was to bring young, up and coming designers to the mass market and let consumers discover some treasures that may have been too high priced for them.  Gabby Basora started at Barney's New York and the prices were not under $100.00.  Tucker for Target contains many great pieces for under $100.00.  And surprise, there are jackets, skirts and dresses that you could even wear to ...gasp...work! Yes, not just thigh high dresses that are good for clubbing.  The sizing for the most part is more generous than most of the Go Juniors line.  For the most part, the sizing is that of Misses garments.  There are a few exceptions, some of the dresses, the ones with the Tucker buttons, run small.  Two of my top picks are pictured below, the floral halter top and the Persian lamb bomber jacket.  I didn't buy the Persian lamb jacket because I am still wearing my Behnaz Sarafpour Target Persian lamb jacket from a few years ago, but I like the Tucker version.  And this little jacket has a great lining that matches one of the collection's dresses.

    persian jacket
Pictured: My favorites from Tucker for Target.
My favorites from this collection, other than what I have already mentioned are, the Butterfly camisole top, the Butterfly dress, the wrap Trench jacket in green herringbone and the black boucle dress.  The pieces I don't recommend are the velvet dress in burnout, the signature print diamonds dress, and the tunic sweater in brown stripe.  But overall, the collection is very well done, and it's cohesive.  That means you really can mix and match these pieces because the colors work together.  You could wear the jackets with many of the blouses, and the sweaters over the blouses.  These are fall looks that you can layer. Check out the outfits section on the Target website to see the possible combinations.   Kudos to designer Gabby Basora for delivering such a great collection at budget prices.  I was prepared not to like this one at all, but it's a wonderful, and unexpected, collection that works, and can actually go with you to work. Something we haven't seen from Target Go in eons.

NYFW: Sneak Peak: Milly's Spring 2011 Sketches and Inspiration

Have you heard of the design house Milly? Milly is sold at fine department stores like Bloomingdale's. The label  is the adorable feminine brainchild of designer Michelle Smith. The super stylish Michelle worked at Paris fashion houses Hermès and Dior.  I've long been a fan of Milly.  I had the pleasure of meeting her in February when she launched her Clinque print bag at Bloomingdale's.  I've long been a fan, and own many of her embellished tops.

So, I'm excited to see Milly designer Michelle Smith’s sketch and a swatch from a featured print in the spring 2011 collection, which will debut on the runway on Wednesday, September 15 at The Stage at Lincoln Center.  Michelle says she is inspired by the fashion eccentric Peggy Guggenheim.  Peggy G was an heiress and the ultimate art lover, collecting  fine art and offering patronage to some great artists. Amy Madigan  played the part of  Peggy in the movie Pollock (2000),  based on the life of  artist Jackson Pollock.  Peggy was a very interesting character, and some people regarded her fashion taste as eclectic.  It's so interesting that Michelle Smith was inspired by her.

Below is a swatch from the collection, showing a poppy print. Love it!

Pictured: A swatch from one of Milly's prints for her Spring 2011 collection.

You can watch Milly at NYFW via her website, on 9/15 at 3 pm ET , noon PST. Get your own front row seat! :)
