Holiday HSN Collections: Mariah Carey and Luxe by Irina Shabayeva
There seems to be no end in sight or at least website for celebrities licensing their names to budget fashion collections. Tonight Mariah Carey enters the budget arena with her collection of jewelry, fragrances and high heeled shoes on HSN. The collection is not cheap, so if you like it, you may want to wait a while. The charm necklace is approximately $200.00. The piece I like the best is the Pavé Crystal Butterfly 23-3/4" Necklace, but it's almost $150.00 at the event price. That's a little too much for me to spend on Mariah labeled goods.
I think some of these prices will be reduced. Just a hunch. I can't even begin to talk about the horror of the Mariah Carey shoes from the HSN collection. These should not even be in production. The black boots with the fake Chanel chain look are like a Medusa. Don't look at them too long. Ditto the suede platform boots with "peep toe." What were they thinking at HSN? Just because Mariah has had some big hits, it doesn't mean that tasteless fashions can be sold via her branding.
Check out the HSN Liza collection, now on the clearance racks. Mariah's shoes should be so lucky I would say they are more Pariah, than Mariah:) Bring back Liza! I still smile when I think of Liza on HSN. I wish she would return to the Home Shopping Network. That was entertainment. I loved her fashion tips and stories! :)
A more promising collection on HSN is the newly launched Luxe collection by Project Runway's Irina Shabayeva. The collection features some great outerwear with Irina's classic Russian Winter touches like faux fur collars, wrap sweater with lovely rosettes and coats with fur trim at the cuffs or the hems. The collection look luxurious enough for a Tsarina, but the prices are reasonable. I like the wrap sweater for under $100.00. Be sure and read the reviews before you order on HSN. They always help me!

Ready, Aim, Point + Click: Pre-Cyber Monday Deals and Tips
Tomorrow is technically the start of the shopping holiday known as Cyber Monday. This year I would say Cyber Monday is almost a "non-event." Why you may ask? Because so many of the stores started their online sales last week, at the same time as the in-store Black Friday sales. Black Friday is no longer just one day. It's more like one month of Black Friday now. The sales just keep going as retailers pull out all the stops to draw in shoppers.Having said that, there are a few things for you to think of before you start full-on Cyber shopping. 106.9 million plan to shop on Cyber Monday this year up from 96.5 million who shopped on Cyber Monday in '09 according to Shop.org. So let your primary concern be safety when shopping online. As a survivor of various cyber attacks and viruses, I can tell you first hand that you do need to be careful where you shop. Check out today's New York Times article entitled " A Bully Finds a Pulpit on the Web." The article is a great reminder that just because a site is top of the Google search rankings, doesn't mean it's a safe site for shopping. Do more than a search for the item you want. Check the website for complaints before you give them your credit card information and make a purchase. The CyberMonday.org site recently provided some helpful tips for your consideration. Here's the 411 from Scott Silverman of the National Retail Federation and Shop.org.
Safety Suggestions:
- Be sure to shop on reputable, trust-worthy sites such as CyberMonday.com and its retail partners
- Just as you’re more careful when shopping in busy malls during the holiday, be more careful online as well
- AVG offers free downloads of virus scan and link scan here: www.shop.org/shopsafely and http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Now that we have that silly old security and safety stuff out of the way, let's talk savvy shopping! Here are a few top picks.

PeopleStyleWatch Scoop: Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld to Design for Macy's
PeopleStyleWatch has some amazing budget fashion breaking news, first reported by Women's Wear Daily (WWD). Wait for it...Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld has signed to design a collection for Macy's! The man who has lovingly carried on Chanel’s luxurious and timeless designs is now coming to "off the rack" retailer Macy's. The Lagerfeld collection is planned to launch in Fall 2011. The limited-edition line of women’s clothing comes as part of Macy’s new designer series, where the retailer will rotate different higher-end collections through their new "Impulse" department every two months.
Personally, I'm surprised Lagerfeld is going to do another budget line. He was none too happy with his H&M collection in 2004. Of course, he was probably unhappy all the way to the bank. I remember reading in the foreign press that he was upset that H&M didn't stock his collection for more than one day, so that it really was accessible to all. He was also a bit snobbish about his designs being made available in larger sizes. "It was great to work with the people at H&M as we all helped each other to make it a success," he told German magazine Stern in 2004. "But the incomprehensible decisions of the management in Stockholm have taken away any desire to do it again. They did not make the clothes in sufficient quantities. I find it embarrassing that H&M let down so many people… I don't think that is very kind, especially for people in small towns and countries in eastern Europe. It is snobbery created by anti-snobbery." He also told Stern magazine that he didn't like his designs being made available in mass market sizes (think 12/14 US, 44/46 Euro) "What I designed was fashion for slender and slim people," said the designer. "That was the original idea." Talk about snobbery. I own some of Lagerfeld's H&M pieces, and I adore them. I purchased them all on eBay in size 44. I'm pleased that H&M made them in larger sizes, and I'm sure Macy's will do them same. Especially since the average woman has been reported as being a size 14. Why cut out a market segment that loves to shop? Even Chanel made an array of sizes. She didn't just cut for size 2, 4 or 6. Remember, there was no size 0 when Chanel started to design. Fashion is really for everyone, and isn't that the point of mass-marketing these designers at lower prices?
“Karl Lagerfeld holds a unique place in the world of fashion, an icon who is the ultimate modernist,” Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy’s Inc. told WWD of the highly anticipated collaboration. Details and prices have yet to be announced. To me, the Lagerfeld H&M collection had many Coco like touches. It will be interesting to see if the Macy's collection channels Chanel, or just Lagerfeld.

Black Friday Shopping Tips

Bargain shoppers, if you are getting ready for the annual "Midnight Madness" shopping or the 3 am Kohl's Black Friday sale, I salute you. For those of you gearing up this week's shopping sale and doorbuster specials, here are a few tips.
- Check the Store circulars, The Recessionista's real time posts and www.theblackfriday.com website for the best deals. Make your list from the circulars and websites. Do the Doorbusters first (4 am to 5 am) then move on to the rest.
- Check your email before heading to the store, or from the store on your "crackberry" or other device. The stores are still e-mailing discount codes and posting to their Facebook groups with special deals.
- Have a look at the news on Twitter using the hashtag #blackfriday. Many of the retailers will be tweeting.
- Form your own team Recessionista. In the past, my sister-in-law and I have traded off various sections in the stores to get the Doorbusters. She goes for toys, I go for fashion/clothing.
Then next challenge is what to wear on the journey. Here are some things to think about. Some of the challenges a Black Friday shopper faces include:
- Going from cold temperatures outside to warm temperatures inside
- Trying on clothing efficiently
- Weaving your way through an overcrowded store
- Comfort for long hours
To help you survive, here are a few suggestions:
- Dressing in layers is the key to holiday shopping success. Get ready to wear take off sweaters and jackets in store. This will make it easy to stay cool in the store and warm in the parking lot.
- Wearing a puffy vest frees up your arms - easier to push the cart, reach for deals. You're also not trying to fight your way through a crowd in an oversized jacket.
- A slim fitting tank is a great piece to wear when out shopping. It layers well and is great for trying on blouses, jackets, blazers and more....just in case you spot that perfect holiday gift for yourself.
- Shoes are the key to staying comfortable for the entire shopping day. (Tip: check out the shoes at Kohl's for numerous options from slip-ons to flats.) My niece wears her Sketchers and I have been known to wear my PJ Clarks.
- Just because you're up early, it doesn't mean you have to look like it - some foundation, mascara and lip gloss goes a long way.
- Don't let bedhead rule you! Wear a cute hat or scarf around the head. H&M, Kohl's Simply Vera and Kmart's Jaclyn Smith (even a French Beret) offer chic n' cheap chapeaus.
Remember, float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Swarm in early for the savings, get in, be safe and get home to go back to bed. Don't spend all day at the mall buying stuff you don't need, that wasn't on the list.
P. S.: Try not to waste precious time in the mall lot looking for parking close to the storefront. This eats up doorbuster time. Just park it and go!

J Lo to Go Price Low! Kohl’s Department Stores to Launch Lifestyle Brand with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
The Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony brands will initially launch in women’s and men’s apparel and accessories. The Jennifer Lopez collection will include sportswear, dresses, handbags, jewelry, shoes and sleepwear while Marc Anthony will launch in sportswear, dress shirts, neck wear, accessories, suit separates, sport coats and shoes. Over time it’s expected the Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony collections may expand into home. Both will have prominent positioning throughout the store in the contemporary areas. It will be interesting to see what these lines look like. Both Jennifer and Marc are well known for their couture looks on the red carpet.
“The Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony collections deliver a total value proposition to our customers by offering contemporary style at an incredible value in each category,” said Don Brennan, Kohl’s senior executive vice president. “This launch builds on the success of and further strengthens our exclusive and private brand portfolio, which has demonstrated consistent growth over the last several years due to strong customer response.”
And what does J. Lo have to say about all this? Well not a surprise, it's another great step in expanding her planet wide celebrities to the malls! :) "We are thrilled to embark on this new venture with Kohl’s and to join in this important partnership,” said Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. “These are really exciting times for us and our family and we are looking forward to collaborating with Kohl’s in the creation of a lifestyle brand that represents our true style and the essence of who we are and what we have come to represent as artists. It is with much excitement that we can bring this to the Kohl’s customer."
I'll be really interested to see these products at Kohl's. Especially if they come out with home stuff. What do you think readers? It's really coming down to what celebrity has not expanded their brand to retail :)

The Recessionista Reviews Lanvin for H&M
Tonight was supposed to be the exclusive West Coat preview of the collection at the new H&M in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. Sadly, H&M had to cancel tonight's party and West Coast launch due to construction issues at the Caesars Forum Shoppes. I for one was very disappointed, and also lost some dollars on that cancellation as I was not able to use my non-refundable ticket. However, I give H&M high marks for being responsive to the situation and reaching out promptly to make amends. They arranged a private preview for me at the showroom on Sunset and gave me some shopping certificates to cover the loss of my $200.00 plane tickets. So big props to H&M from this blogger! The only problem is I didn't get to get my shop on, and I am still wondering if I will line up tomorrow. H&M will be giving shoppers wristbands tomorrow according to their place in line, to let them gain admittance to the stores where the collection will be sold. Once you are admitted into the store, you will be able to only buy 2 of each piece. I like this policy. I hated the days of the eBayers swooping in, taking everything off the racks, and then marking it up outrageously and reselling it online. Be aware that your time in store will be limited, so have a look at the H&M website and select carefully what you might like and then move quick to get it. You need to have a game plan, and maybe even a shopping buddy so you can divide and conquer.
Pictured: This faux fur coat is gorgeous and looks like mink.
- The short women's tuxedo jacket with the amazing buttons
- The women's faux fur coat with the alternating rhinestone and black buttons (199.00US)
- The one shoulder dress in midnight blue/black.
- Any of the men's suiting that you can get your hands on. Some of the blazers are amazing at at $149.00 US, you can't beat the price.
- The long women's tuxedo coat ( $349.99 US)
- The tulle dress with the embellished collar is a doppelganger for a piece from the 2006 runway collection. I like the look of it, and the fitted waist. It will be flattering for many women.
On my second choice list are the following novelty items. These pieces are just a bit of holiday cheer. You won't want to wear them forever.
They are more trendy, but maybe fun to own for the price.
- The brightly colored holiday shoes for men and women.
- The chunky big necklaces with the flowers, and the pins for women. (the flowers are plastic, but sturdy.) I also like the large flower brooch.
- The men's sunglasses which look they belonged to Jack Nicholson.
- The embellished T-shirts for women
All the pieces are well done. I wish some of the edges on the ruffled dresses had better finishing. As a former seamstress and Vogue Pattern user, I don't like raggedy cut edges on clothes I pay over $100.00 for. I also was not in love with the women's bright floral ruffled dresses, but if you can rock it, go for it. My other misses are the women's wristlet and the small clutch bag.
They are way too overdone for my tastes. Now for the eternal question: will I arise at the crack of dawn to get in the shopping queue for H&M Lanvin? I 'm not so sure. LA is turning cold, and rain is definitely on the way. The line will form at Beverly Center in am near Quinzo's subs on Beverly Blvd. The Century City and Sunset stores will also have the collection. South Coast Plaza will too. For the rest of the planet, check the H&M website. My prediction, it will sell out quick. Then there will be a few returns, so if you straggle in later, you can always find a few returns in the story. I'm still thinking if I want to spend my time sleeping or shopping tomorrow morning. How about you dear reader?

Holiday Trend: The Crystal Bib Necklace
I didn't win the necklace on the Tweet-up, and I was prepared to go on one of my epic shopping quests in search of it. But low and behold, my quest was short lived. I stumbled upon it at my local TJ Maxx store tonight for $39.99 and I couldn't believe my luck. I know TJ Maxx keeps prices low by not doing mass advertising campaigns, so I am glad that I saw it on Twitter, and that I then found it in-store. The necklace looks very classy, and not at all gaudy like I have seen. It is made up of crystal strands that are stylishly twisted to form a glamorous chain, attached to a black ribbon. If you like this necklace, here's a little tip. You can find it for slightly less than the TJ Maxx price at Dillards online. Click here to see it for $34.80 at Dillards online in Gunmetal or Gold. I paid slightly more at TJ Maxx for it, but I didn't have to pay shipping charges for delivery. If you're looking for a great holiday piece, you might want to check out this Natasha necklace. It can be worn like a vintage choker necklace on the neck, or worn around the necklace as a it bib. An inexpensive and very versatile look for the holidaze :)

Holiday Shopping Survey from American Express: 100% of Women Say They Will Give Gifts
My credit card company American Express (think no finance fees + rewards =me) recently released their 2010 Spending and Savings tracker report. This survey takes the pulse of American consumers, and shows us yet again that Women are from Venus and Men are from Mars. According to the study, the inhabitants of my plant, the Venusians, are ready, locked and loaded to shop this holiday season. "The average American will spend $710 on holiday gifts this year with that figure nearly doubling to $1,384 among those who earn $100,000 or more per year, according to the latest American Express Spending & Saving Tracker. Women will particularly power the holiday shopping season with 100 percent of those surveyed planning to hit the stores; to the contrary, 12 percent of men have no holiday shopping plans," notes the American Express report. Ok, it's not a surprise that women power the holiday season. We are the ones reading blogs, cutting coupons, looking at the Black Friday ads and hitting the malls at ungodly hours.
The most fascinating part of the study to me (a survey 2,100 consumers) is how differently men and women go about saving and trying to budget for the gift giving season.
| Savings Strategy | Women | Men |
| Shop for clearance or sale merchandise | 77% | 55% |
| Clipping coupons | 67% | 46% |
| Buying only for people on their list | 53% | 43% |
| Re-gifting | 16% | 9% |
This just confirms what I have always known in my heart, women feel better about shopping when they feel like they are getting a bargain or something on sale. It's very emotional for us. We want to feel like we are thrifting, even when we are spending. In contrast, men will buy more on impulse, or when it's convenient. I have never seen a guy friend, boyfriend or male family member shop with a coupon. What do you think readers? Does your partner/husband or boyfriend track the deals? Well, maybe a few, if they are deals on big screen TVs, PCs or an iPod Touch. Just say'in.
So watch this space readers, as I'll be compiling the deals through out this holiday season. Here are a few I have my eye on:
* Lanvin for H&M: The french design house launches their budget line with H&M on Nov 20th in the US & Canada, and Nov 23 in Europe.
* e-Bay is really gearing up for the holiday season. Their prices are competitive with major retailers, and they are now offering coupons. You know all the Toys from Black Friday sales will turn up on eBay right away, and then they will be sold out at Toys R Us and other retailers. eBay becomes the black market for toys. Click here to get all the cool new eBay coupons for savings, on well, everything.
*In-Style's holiday coupons. Check out the deals and coupons on the In-Style site. I just discovered this via an ad, and there as some good deals here.
* Black Friday deals. It goes without saying that if you have the inner strength and good shoes, you might be able to snag some good deals the day after Thanksgiving. Of course, Black Friday is now almost of whole month of savings, really look at the prices and compare using a tool like NexTag or BizRate. Follow the Black Friday deals online to see all the specials.
* Gettington: Have you heard about this website and catalog store? I found out about them at BlogHer. Their Black Friday deals start tomorrow, and they have just about everything. But here's the unique twist on Gettington. The site show you what kind of finance fees you will be paying over time of your items. I really like that they show you how the finance charges add up. I added a big screen TV to my shopping cart, and Gettington shows the buyer how to weigh the real cost of their purchase by factoring in payment options and financing.
Stay tuned as we get closer to shopping high alert! :)

Celebrity Style for Less: Christine Price Handbags
Christine Price is a hot handbag designer for celebrities like Julia Roberts, Paris Hilton, Carrie Anne Inaba, Felicity Huffman, Angela Bassett and Anne Heche. I've seen pictures of celebrities carrying her handbags in magazines like OK! and on E!TV Online. I just haven't paying that much attention to her bags for a few reasons. One, I'd never seen Christine's bags in person and two, they seemed to be quite pricey. Last week I had the opportunity to meet Christine Price at the Sassy City Chicks shopping event and see her handbags for myself. I can now see what all the buzz is about. Her bags are really handsome. They are genuine leather with attractive hardware. If you're a Mom, you'll love the fact that her over sized travel bags like the "Tinely" have detachable liners that you can remove and wash. That way you can get clean your bag from time to time, get rid of all the cookie and goldfish crumbs, and find your stuff again in the cavernous black hole of a handbag we all carry.
Christine has been in business for four years, building her brand while raising four young children. She makes her bags for busy women like herself. Her bags are designed to be beautiful but functional. Unlike some designers, Christine only does handbags. She chooses to focus on just the one product line, instead or trying to do clothing or shoes too. I asked her what her top sellers are. She told me, "The Sybil bag, which retails for $199.99 is our top seller, then the Arelene Tuxedo bag." Take a look at the pictures of the bags, and you'll see why these bags would be coveted.
Ordinarily, Christine Price bags retail for $179.00 to $259.00. However, I have a little treat for all my readers, that I think you will love. Christine graciously offered all The Recessionista's readers a 50% discount on her bags for the holidays (2010 only, limited time offer.) To hell with driving to the mall at 5: 00 am on the day after Thanksgiving to catch a bargain. You can get your discount by visiting Christine's website and ordering using this code: HAUTE2010. I already broke down and bought some bags myself at the discount. I fell in love with the Alrene Tuxedo bag, and purchased the Sonia bag for my sister. Check out the Sonia bag below on Felicity Huffman's arm. I bought both bags at the Sassy City Chick's event so I didn't have to pay for shipping on them :)
To shop at Christine Price, create an account on her website, place the bag you want into your shopping card and then enter the discount code at the final checkout. Please note, this is not a sponsored post, and I don't receive a commission from the designer on the sale of bags from the blog. I can't, they are already too deeply discounted :) This is just a good deal that I found, that I sincerely wanted to share with my readers. There are many readers who live outside Los Angeles and couldn't attend the Sassy City Chicks event. Stay tuned, as I will be sharing more deals from the event this week to celebrate the holidays! After all, affordable luxury is the raison d'etre of The Recessionista.
