Happy New Year: Pop Some Cheap and Cheerful Bubbly

Its the last day of 2010! Au Revoir old year. In preparing for New Year's Eve, bubbly is very much on my mind. And by bubbly, I mean Champagne. One of my dearest friends has called Champagne nothing more than "bad white wine." I disagree. At only 90 calories a glass, Champagne helps me prepare for my coming New Year's diet and usher out the old year in style. For tonight, I will be uncorking some wonderful Champagne to welcome in 2011. I have two affordable favorites to recommend from California to The Recessionista's readers. My top picks are Tattinger Champagne from Domaine Carneros and Thorton Champagnes from the Thorton Winery in Temecula, California. I must confess, I am very partial to the Domaine Carneros Tattinger Champagne from Sonoma, CA. I've visited this winery and spent many a happy afternoon sitting on their patio overlooking the vineyards sampling their Pinot Noirs and their sparkling wine. If you can't journey to the Champagne region of France, Domaine Carneros provides a cheap & cheerful alternative. The winery & tasting rooms are designed to look like a grand French chateau. Their vintage Brut Cuvee is listed on their website for under $30.00 US and has been rated 92 points by wine spectator. However, I have found it for less than $26.00 at Trader Joe's grocery in California. If you're in the US, check your local Trader Joe's for it.

An early Happy NEW YEAR dear readers! I'm sending you all a virtual glass of bubbly and wishing you a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR's! Welcome 2011!

New Year's Event Style: Think Diamante Sparkle

Pictured: DKNYC Sequined Top on Sale at Macy's for approx. $40.00 US

As New Year's Eve parties beckon, I'm thinking of holiday style and sequins.  I bet you are too.  The French called it "Diamante."  Today this mysterious term is more often called "Bling."  But I prefer Diamante.  Diamante is the art of creating a sparkling effect using the reflection of gemstones.  During the Edwardian period, many society ladies and actresses began to wear Diamante headbands around the head or low on the forehead.  Of course the trend really took off in the 1920s with advent of the Flapper.  The Flappers elevated the art of Diamante with sequined skull caps, bright headbands and sequin encrusted gowns.  In recent years, designers have adapted the use of Diamante to sequined tops, 1920s inspired gowns, embellishments on shoes and tops.  If that weren't enough sparkle, this season's holiday jewelry consists of sparkling rings, glittering earrings and statement necklaces.    In his new book, " The Style Checklist", my chum Lloyd Boston talks about using a sequined tank as a core fashion piece for the holiday season.  "There are few items that flatter almost all women of any size, shape or age, " says Lloyd. "Oddly enough, the sequined tank is one of them. Whether you are twenty something or seventy plus, the timeless elegance of a sequined embellishment is something that keeps you looking youthful."  But does a sequined garment have a long shelf life? According to my style guru Lloyd, well yes it does  " It is a forever garment ,"says Lloyd "that in proper measure says, sizzle, dazzle and shine!"  It stands to reason that sequins on your garment save you from buying expensive jewelry.  After all, if you're wearing some great bling, there's no need to pile on more.

Pictured: Diamante Sparkle from a 1920s style cap from Erin Fetherston's Juicy Couture collection.

If you're looking for some New Year's Style, here are some of my favorite Diamante tops and fashion accessories:
  • Foley and Corrina Limited Edition Embellished Top.  Foley is full of Glitter and Glam this season, check out my earlier post on all their great sequined tops and their glittering gold dress.
  • DKNYC Top, Short Sleeve Sequined Top on sale at Macy's. You can't go wrong with Donna Karan.  Her clothes are so comfortable and stylish.  I prefer a sequin top with short sleeves to a sleeveless tank, so I love this DKNYC top in blue.
  • MICHAEL Michael Kors Top, Sequined Sleeveless Tank on sale at Macy's for $54.99.  This tank comes in holiday gold which will match any black sweater of blazer for a style statement.
  • Henri Bendel has all manner of sparkly indulgences  for New Years. Plus FREE GROUND SHIPPING on website orders. Just enter PARTYPREP at checkout.  If you're a Bendel girl, take a look at these earrings.
  • H&M: Their holiday collection offers embellished sweaters, dazzling tops and some terrific holiday headbands and clutches.
  • Juicy Couture: Check out Erin Fetherston's Juicy Collection, lots of holiday sparkle and it's all on sale.  Check my earlier post for details.  I love The Great Gatsby styled sequined skull cap tailor made for Daisy Buchanan.
  • Simply Vera at Kohl's has a great sequined tank top in all purpose black is an all purpose top for New Year's and beyond.  The top is on sale for $24.99.
  • White House Black Market: Take a look at the sparkling rings, shawls/scarves and jewelry.  There's lots of great party wear on sale.

eBay's Top Shopped in Style for 2010

Now it the time of year that I think about looking into my crystal ball to try to forecast 2011 fashion trends. But before I can look forward, I have to take a look into the past.  One simple barometer of style that I use is to look at what fashionistas are buying is eBay.  What are you searching for either by name brand designer or fashion description? Inquiring minds want to know.  Knowing what shoppers’ are searching for helps in two important ways.  One, if you are thinking of reselling items from your closet, checking out the top searched for items on eBay, and incorporating those keywords into your eBay listing description, can help you position your product for sale and multiple bids.  Do a little research before you list. The power of Google search and eBay search can bring buyers to you if you know how to phrase your description using the top-searched terms/keywords.  Two, if you are a retailer, eBay is on the pulse of the consumer.  Knowing what moves on eBay is a good indication of what will sell in your online or brick & mortar store.  Remember to check not just what is selling, but at what price it is selling.  For example, I am very fond of searching for Chanel brooches or pins, and then sorting the list by lowest priced first.  The price ranges let me know what the average resale price of a Chanel pin will be, at least on eBay.

This year, I asked the folks at eBay what the top searched fashion items were in 2010.  After looking through all the data, they reported that their data reveals that military jackets, leopard prints and vintage 1950s looks were in high demand.  Top searched for items were:

  • Military-inspired items (1,038,026 related items sold)
  • Plaid  clothing (718,365 related items sold),
  • Romantic 1950s (626,264 related items sold)
  • Fashion items with animal themes were immensely popular. This included feathers (121,983 related items sold), faux fur (105,988 related items sold) and leopard print (80,120 related items sold).
The most frequently searched designers by name were Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch.   This makes sense to me, as both designers are popular, and pricey.  Frequently, you'll find some great deals on both Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch via eBay sellers.  Many items are NWT (new with tags.) I've never worried too much about buying a Marc Jacobs item  from a price perspective, providing I felt it was tasteful.  I usually wear it a few times, then sell it "pre-loved " on eBay.  Top designers with quality items hold their resale value, and you will definitely recoup some of your purchase price on a Marc Jacobs or Tory Burch.  Below is the full eBay Top 10 List.

eBay’s Picks for America’s “Top Shopped in Style” and Fashion Obsessions of 2010:
1.       Military jackets
2.       Plaid
3.       1950s
4.       Neon
5.       Marc Jacobs
6.       Feathers
7.       Faux fur
8.       Tory Burch
9.       Ankle boots
10.     Leopard print

The one item on the list that shocks me is ...wait for it... Neon!  What in the world are fashionistas doing searching for Neon? Ankle boots yes, that is understandable, but Neon? That puzzles me.  I had to run the search for myself on eBay just to see what is listed for Neon.  My search retrieved sneakers with Neon trim, Neon colored strappy shoes, Marc Jacobs Neon Boots (Marc Jacobs fashion 911 call warranted), and numerous hideous items in the form of ties and T-shirts.  Neon searching is a trend I hope doesn't continue in 2011.  Let me be the first to say, if you are searching for Neon on eBay, please stop this immediately and start search for something more fashionable.  Might I suggest a "Little Black Dress" or "LBD?"  I mean seriously, who is looking for all this Neon and why?  Please leave a comment if you need a Neon intervention.  Neon cravings can sometimes be satisfied by looking at a Neon light or a flashing sign.   Purchasing Neon should not be necessary to satisfy the craving.  Help is available.

Harrods Ushers in the After Christmas Sales

Pictured: Jerry Hall and Lizzy Jagger kick-off the Harrod's Winter Sale.
Jerry Hall and her look a like daughter, Lizzy, kicked off the Harrods' after Christmas sale this morning in London as shoppers queued up for bargains.  While, at least bargains in Harrods' terms. The word bargain can mean so many different things depending on the target market :)  According to the Daily Mail. "Sale highlights at the Knightsbridge store include a Marc Jacobs sequined evening bag reduced from £670 to £399 and a Sony 3D TV bundle package down from £3,549 to £2,828."

In the US, there is no comparable sale going on.  We don't have any celebrities cutting sale ribbons to welcome in lines of shoppers this morning.  Bloomingdales, Saks and Macy's are all advertising sales, but to me, the sales look about the same as the pre-Christmas sales.  Look for extensions on after Christmas sales as storms throughout the US, are preventing shoppers from getting to the malls for after holiday sales.

Sales on my radar this morning are J Crew's clearance sale offering an extra 30% off final clearance items and  Banana Republic's 50% off sale in-store and online.   For electronics, look for deals at the usual suspects today:  Walmart, Kmart, Target, Best Buy and Sears.  Deals include reductions on digital cameras, games and big screen TVs.

Final Gift Shopping: The Recessionista goes Maxxinista

Pictured: My fashionista holiday card from Burgoyne cards via TJ Maxx

Until yesterday, I've been woefully behind on the Christmas shopping duties.  I needed everything, stockings stuffers, cards, and even wrapping paper. Torrential California downpours, and even floods, made driving hazardous during this final holiday shopping week. The situation has been code red at The Recessionista HQ.  Thankfully, I was able to do a little TJ Maxx run last night and it really helped.   TJ Maxx is open until 11:00 p.m. this week ( untill Thursday, 12/23).  Christmas Eve they will even be open until 6 pm.  How good is that? Thank you TJ Maxx employees for staying on duty!  I picked up the above pictured fashionista holiday cards from Burgoyne cards for 50% off retail prices.  I know it's late, but better late than never, right?  I may go back after the holiday and get a few more boxes for next year.  Since TJ Maxx doesn't advertise specific goods, in order to keep prices low,  I thought I'd tell you a little bit about what is on the racks if you venture out.  So lean in close, as I whisper the TJ Maxx shopping secrets in your ear.  In the cosmetic department, they have top of the line goodies from Estee Lauder, Clinique, Shiseido and more.  I'm always on an eternal quest for Molton Brown and every now and then I find that too.

Pictured: Discounted Estee Lauder Night Repair cream spied at TJ Maxx

Other goodies to be on the look out for: Betsey Johnson accessories, pajamas, handbags and jewelry, Juicy Couture watches, jewelry, handbags and clothing,  Maxx Studio clothing, Cynthia Rowley bags, cookbooks from the Barefoot Countessa, Cooking Light and Williams-Sonoma and finally toys! Yes, there are Madame Alexander dolls, Thomas the Train and Backyardigans to be found at TJ Maxx.  I hit the mother load, and ended up getting several bags of goodies so that I will have something under the tree for a variety of family members.

Pictured: Warm and cozy Betsey Johnson PJs make great holiday gifts.
I don't get into TJ Maxx as often as I would like, because I don't always have time to go through the racks looking for deals. But, if you're down to the wire and still need a few holiday gifts, I highly recommend a TJ Maxx or Marshalls' run.   There are still good deals to be found and remember to check the red tag clearance racks.

The Recessionista Reviews William Rast for Target

Pictured: William Rast for Target Women's collection shirts

I finally escaped the torrential rains in California, and got to the cold East coast where I was able to stumble into the local Target, a steaming coffee in hand, to review the new William Rast for Target collection.  I wish I could give this one a rave up, because I like William Rast jeans and their unique, derriere enhancing fit.  But make no mistake, William Rast for Target is not the same in quality, price or fit as William Rast. It proves the old adage that just because something is lower priced, it is not necessarily a bargain.  For starters, the entire collection is sized small. The Target descriptions call it a young "contemporary fit" but I would call it a small Junior fit (except for the T-shirts). To show the sizing, I asked my nine year old niece to model some of the clothes.  No surprise, they fit her perfectly.  The little $49.99 Khaki Jacket with the rouching  around the zipper is cute, but it's hard to image it on someone with a torso longer than a kid's.  The jacket is also very lightweight, more suited to early fall, than snowy winter.

Pictured: The Recessioniecesta models the khaki jacket from  the collection.  It's quite a petite fit.
The collection's shirts look cheaply made, particularly the plaid shirts and the overly shiny pink woven blouse in polyester. For the price, there are shirts made of better fabric, that offer a better fit.  In the women's line, the standout is the chambray shirt in "dark wash" with the studs on the breast pocket.  This is probably the best looking piece in the collection in my opinion.  Priced at $34.99, this shirt could also be worn over a tank as a jacket.

Pictured: This black chambray shirt is my favorite piece in the women's collection, priced at $34.99.
The T-shirts and tops in the line are flimsy, and not unique. Although the line is advertised as "Biker Bohemia", I don't see anything Bohemian about the mix of non-descript tees and sweatshirts. The Target I visited didn't have any of the the leather jackets or the tuxedo jackets that I liked in the print ads. They did have the khaki vest with the ruffles which is a bit of a disaster with the small fit, crooked zippers, and unfinished, frayed edges.

Pictured: The unfinished edges on the William Rast for Target twill vest in green (price $39.99)
There were lots of the jeans left on the Target rack. It looked as though nothing had been touched since they were stocked. To me, the jeans are the collection highlight, with the distinctive William Rast back pocket stitching and fit.  The jeans run small, so do try to try them on in-store before buying. On the plus side, the jeans have plenty of stretch in them with a nice balance of polyester, cotton and elastane.  For $49.99, the jeans are more expensive than their competitors, but they do appear to be better made and offer a better fit.

Overall, I think William Rast for Target is headed for the Target clearance racks after the holiday.  I didn't see any shoppers looking at it in the store I visited except me and my little niece. There was more excitement among shoppers over the glittery holiday tops and the pieces from the Merona collection. It's too bad, because bringing William Rast to Target is an idea that showed promise.  But at the end of the day, I don't believe consumers are going to pay these prices for this rather drab and not particularly well made collection. There are just too many other choices.

The Recessionista's Last Minute Gift Ideas

A Vintage Looking  Card from Rose Bud Designs
Are you ready shoppers? This is it, the final Christmas Countdown. I have to admit, I'm a little stressed.  California is lost in torrential downpours, mudslides and floods.  The east coast is freezing. And poor Europe is also freezing.  London looks more like  New Iceland.  My well organized early gift orders have gone "awry."   A few gifts arrived early in the mail, but one is too large, and another is already broken. Off into the returns bin they go.  That means I have to go get some new gifts to give...and the last minute. Oh the pain...the thoughts of the mall parking lot, the late night gift wrapping.  I hate it.  If you're struggling like I am, here are a few last minute gift ideas.

iTunes Gift Card. You can't go wrong with the gift of music. The recipient gets to pick their favorite tunes and you get to pick up a convenient and economical gift from the grocery, the drugstore or even online for sending via email. Its easy and a great way to avoid last minute shipping snafus.

An American Express Gift Card. This little gold wrapped card give you something nice to put under the tree. You can find them at just about any grocery or drugstore. The nice thing about the Amex card is it is fee free. That means if you paid $50.00 for it, your giftee gets to use $50.00 worth of your gift. There are no service charge fees added in. I recommend American Express for this reason.  I hate going to restaurants and having my gift card declined because I can't cover the tip, plus the hidden service charge already on the gift card.

A Good Book. The holidays are usually the time I catch up on my reading. It's the perfect time to escape into a good story or a biography. Right now I'm reading Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie.  I've read a lot about Chanel, but this book takes the reader inside the heart and mind of Gabrielle as no other I have read. Until now, I never considered the possibility that the nephew Chanel raised and educated in England may actually have been her own son.  The book is beautifully illustrated with photos, drawings and even Chanel's original letters.  Through the photos, you see the actual inspirations for many of Chanel's designs.  The author presents the strengths of Chanel, but also her vulnerabilities. Her disappointments in love were as great as her fashion triumphs. For more book ideas, check the current New York Time bestseller list . You can gift a book and wrap it with a bow or simply gift a book certificate. If you're willing to pay for expedited shipping, give Amazon a look.  They have everything, including fellow blogger The Frugalista's new book, The Frugalista Files: How One Woman Got Out of Debt Without Giving Up the Fabulous Life. I've read parts of the book, and Natalie McNeal s honest story of spending and then re-accessing makes me smile.

Make a Spa Stocking with items from the Drugstore for your favorite guy or gal.  Look for the top rated beauty products from Olay, Covergirl and others to fill that stocking. Check my early post on the CEW Award Winners available at Drugstores like CVS. Other popular items include Burt's Bees lip balm, shaving lotions and moisturizers Always look for coupons for Burt's Bees to maximize the savings. I also recommend the new Dove Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena I body wash.  I got to sample this product at the BlogHer conference in August and loved it.  The body wash is under $5.00 at Target.  If you're feeling extra generous, splurge on a spa gift certificate.  Check out Arcona, Burke Williams and more for deals.

White House Black Market's Accessories are Chic n'Cheap
Accessories: One of the best ways to enliven any outfit is to accessorize with a scarf, pin or jewelry. A few well chosen, chic n' cheap accessories can renew an outfit, or at this time of year add a holiday touch. Check out J. Crew's jewelry on sale.   Also take a good look at White House Black Market's flower rings and pendants.  Their styles are similar to Chanel's classic Camellia flower jewelry but for much less. I also love Jones New York's colorful wraps for $24.99. The rich colors are amazing from teal, to ruby red, to simple ivory, they are like jewels. For everyday wear, check out Alternative Apparel for some great scarves for men and women Their stuff is ultra comfortable and the prices are extremely affordable. Look for more great accessories at H&M and Ann Taylor Loft.

Charitable Contributions. It's a great time to make a donation to charity in the name of a loved one. Your gift is also tax deductible.

These are just a few ideas to help jump start your creativity as the Christmas Countdown continues. I'll be sharing more tips throughout the week. Stay tuned!

Donate Your Coke Rewards Points to Toys for Tots

'Tis the Season for Giving Coke Rewards to Toys for Tots

Collecting Coke Rewards points is just one of the ways recessionistas can stretch their dollars a little bit further.  In case you didn't know about this program, Coca-Cola consumers have long been able to accumulate "Coke- Rewards" and then cash them in for prizes and offers. You show me a fashionista, and I'll wager that they have sampled Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Sprite, DASANI water or Fresca. I know you!

So where can you find your rewards?  Look for the rewards lables under bottle caps, inside tear-off packs on 12-packs and on multi-pack wraps. Look under the covers for the elusive points.  This year, if you collect Coke Rewards, you can show that it is indeed better to give than receive by donating your points to the "Toys for Tots" program.   Your donation can help others have a Merry Christmas via a national online gift drive benefiting Toys for Tots.  From now through December 31, Coca-Cola is asking people to donate their My Coke Rewards points at http://www.mcr.com/holiday to help generate gifts for underprivileged kids. The goal is to raise five million My Coke Rewards points, which would enable Toys for Tots to put thousands of gifts in the hands of children and teens. In addition, Coca-Cola is donating $120,000 to Toys for Tots which will be divided among eight cities across America.

"Coca-Cola has been an uplifting and magical part of the holiday season for decades, just like Toys For Tots," said Stuart Kronauge, Vice President, Coca-Cola Trademark Brands, Coca-Cola North America. "With our My Coke Rewards points donation drive, we're offering people a simple way to support Toys For Tots and celebrate the spirit of giving.  Through the generosity of My Coke Rewards members, together we'll help make the holidays special for families in need."  I bet Santa told Stuart to say that.  Remember all those old Coke posters with Santa having a Coke with his midnight snack?  Check out Santa having some "Coke Time" below.

Pictured: An 1931 Coca-Cola ad from The Saturday Evening Post

Participating is easy for anyone, anywhere.  Registered My Coke Rewards members can donate their points to Toys for Tots by entering codes found on 13 participating Coca-Cola products at http://www.mycokerewards.com.  As the donations accumulate, Toys for Tots will be able to redeem them for gifts such as toys, skateboard helmets and basketballs.

My family drinks a wide variety of soft drinks and bottled water products, so I am going through all the caps and containers tonight looking for Coke Rewards to donate.  I can't think of a better way to use the Coke Rewards than to help needy kids get some toys for Christmas.  If you are a regular reader here, and you drink any of these Coca-Cola brands: Coca-Cola, Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Sprite, DASANI, POWERADE, Minute Maid, Fanta,VAULT, Barq's, Fresca, Pibb or Mello Yello look for the Rewards points, and then go online to accumulate them, and ultimately donate them.

The Outnet features a limited edition Paul + Joe collection and Holiday Gift Shop

If you're still on the look out for some good deals that are fashionable and discounted, then click over to TheOutet today.  I just saw on Twitter that they are having a sale on Paul and Joe. This is the second limited edition collection of Paul & Joe for THE OUTNET by designer Sophie Albou. The line features block-color jumpsuits, graphic printed separates and classic tuxedo cover-ups priced at under $200.00 US.  These are  not H&M prices, but for Paul and Joe, it is a bargain.  Some of you may recall that Paul and Joe was one of the first Target Go Collections and it sold out in the blink of an eye.

If you're still looking for gifts, check out their holiday gift shop.  I like that they have suggested sample gifts for your Mom, best friend, daughter, or even, you! :) We all know we like to shop a little for ourselves while we shop for others.

I recently bought some items from TheOutnet and I have been impressed by their customer service.   They are resending items to me for Christmas at my Mom's address because UPS bungled their delivery at my home address.   That's real value add.

Starbucks: Last Minute Shoppers' Deals

Starbucks has a little treat for shoppers out braving the snow, torrential rains (California) and just plain old crowds at malls today. From December 21-22 customers that purchase any 12-pack of any Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew at Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada will also receive a free Starbucks card, preloaded with $5. Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew is a good substitute for regular brewed coffee when you don't have time, or  are traveling.   You can make the coffee with hot water even from the tap, if no boiling water is available.  Buy the instant for yourself,  and use the free Starbucks Card for a stocking stuffer.  I was just in Las Vegas, and very happy to have my Starbucks VIA, since most Vegas hotels have no in room coffee.  There is nothing worse than having to go in search of hot coffee at a huge hotel in the early  morning hours.
Please note: This offer is only available on the above-mentioned days and only while supplies last.

Walmart Brings Back the Norma Kamali Sleeping Bag Coat

Pictured: Just in time for the Holiday chill: The Norma Kamali  Sleeping Bag Coat is back at Walmart

It's freezing around most of the world, and a lot of you have asked me about the Norma Kamali  Sleeping Bag Coats at Walmart.com.  These coats completely sold out last year when they first came to Walmart.  Now, good news, they are back in stock, and still available for delivery before Dec. 24th.  This year's version comes in silver, camouflage plus the original black.  Last year's styles were over sized, so you might want to order a size smaller than what you usually wear.  The coats are currently selling for just $20.00 (this was on 12/19).  That's $15.00 less than the Walmart original launch price of $35.00. As of 12/21, the coats are now priced at $35.00 on the Walmart website. Norma Kamali still sells this classic coat at her store in New York and on her website for $600.00.  If you're interested in that version, click here.

Norma told The New York Times a great story about this coat last year. The idea for the coat was born on a camping trip. “It was cold,” she recalled, “and I was always getting up at night to go to the bathroom.” On one particularly nippy night, she threw on her sleeping bag and sprinted for the bush. “As I was running,” she said, “I was thinking, ‘I need to put sleeves in this thing.’ ”

William Rast for Target Arrives and Temple St. Clair for Target goes on Sale

After much hype, the William Rast for Target collection arrived at Target stores today and online.  As expected, there's lots of denim, leather jackets with fringe, comfy tunics and plaid shirts.  The collection is a snapshot of some of the William Rast brand's greatest hits. So far, the collection is not a sellout or inspiring a buying frenzy.  There are very few reviews of the products online from Target shoppers. Quite a change from the recent Mulberry for Target gold rush type buying.  The brand was co-founded by Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala in 2005 and has been a celebrity favorite. With prices ranging  from $16.99 to $199.99  for the Target collection, I'm wondering if some consumers thought that the price point  was too much for a collection of essentially jeans, T-shirts and a  few  Target made leather jackets.  It doesn't help that William Rast can be found at many discounters (Nordstrom Rack) and online clubs (Gilt Groupe) for about the same prices or even less than William Rast for Target.   With cold weather and storms plummeting the US coast to coast, I think many shoppers (self-included) just decided to stay home.  Target Addict reports that the free shipping that Target usually offers on purchases overs $50.00 doesn't apply to William Rast.  Interesting marketing strategy, don't you think?
Temple St. Clair for Target is now on clearance, including this bracelet.

A deal that may be of more interest at Target today is the Temple St. Clair jewelry pieces on sale.  The Temple St. Clair pieces make great holiday party wear, or gifts, especially at the new reduced prices. A few of the items are out of stock, but most are available and on clearance. Even pieces like the five charm necklace that sold out at launch, have been restocked and are now on sale.

Foley + Corinna Gitter & Glam : Limited Edition Holiday Tops Worth a Look!

Thursday night I attended the Foley + Corinna Glitter & Glam party hosted by the fun and fashionable blogger, The Hollywood Wife.  There's nothing like a group of fashion bloggers gathered together to do some holiday shopping at a fashion mecca like Foley + Corinna.  I hadn't been into the Melrose store in a while.  LA Traffic sometimes prevents me from getting to all the hot spots. The other barrier to my shopping  Foley  and Corrina in the past had been price. Frankly, I had found them a bit too pricey for me.  I thought I would have to settle for Foley and Corinna on HSN. So it was a pleasure to find out there are some affordable and beautiful items at the Melrose store, and of course some pricey ones too. I fell in love with the Limited Edition Rhinestone Trim Shirt in Peacock Blue , available until Jan. 5th for $88.00 (online price.)   The long sleeve jersey top is very flattering, with a cut that skims over the bodice in all the right places.  The area under the arms is cut out, so the underside of the arms is exposed for a little extra holiday sizzle. Note to self, must remember to shave arms before wearing top!  I bought this top to wear to a couple of Holiday parties.  It's a great investment for the price.
Pictured: Foley + Corinna's Limited Edition Holiday Top comes in black, cream, burgandy and blue.

If money is no object, there are plenty of beautiful things at Foley and Corrina for $200.00 to $500.00.  There tulle dresses are amazing, and very vintage looking, but priced at over $300.00. The Paillette Bow Blouse dress is also very special for the holidays, but retails at $495.00 US.  Below is a picture of the fabulous Hollywood Wife modeling it in gold.  It is adorable on her.

Other things I like at Foley + Corrina are there vintage looking jewelry pieces and their handbags.   Their bags are expensive, but they look very chic.   If you like their bags, but not the close to $500.00 prices, check out F+C on HSN.  Some of the bags they did for HSN are now on clearance, and are very similiar to their higher priced styles. Thanks to Foley + Corinna for a great holiday party! And thanks to the sponsors of the fabulous goodie bag with some of my favorite things: Hair Products from Liz Earle ( a favorite of mine), Sunscreen from Kate Sommerville, a coupon for a blow dry at London Essensuals salon and yummy cookies from the Den.  I'll be back to Foley and Corinna after Christmas to check out their post-Holiday sale. Hopefully, it'll be a good one!

Super Saturday Deals for Holiday Shopping

Pictured: One of my favorite holiday scenes The Beverly Wilshire hotel decorated for Christmas (photo M. Hall on the Olympus EP-1)
Today is Super Saturday, allegedly the last big shopping day of the Christmas season.  Some retailers like Kohl's and Macy's opened early today with special savings to get shoppers into the store and buying. Walmart has special deals on TVs today, so if you are looking for a new TV or electronics, check them out.
I have a few deals on my radar to pass onto readers today, so here is a little round-up of savings.

  • Beyond the Rack Shopaholic Sale-  For fashionistas, this sale offers some great savings on designer goods.  The events will launch in at four times: 8:00AM, 11:00AM,2:00PM, and 5:00PM. The club is also offering shoppers the chance to win a $500 shopping spree. A single winner will be drawn from all customers who order from a Shopaholic event.  If you are not a member, click here for a special invite for you to join and shop.  If you shop the sale, The Recessionista's readers receive a $10 shopping credit.
  • eBay: Special deals at the Fashion Vault including 70% off Betsey Johnson outerwear and social shopping. eBay has launched a social networking shopping tool that works with Facebook.  It's kinda interesting.  My sister-in-law and I are testing driving it with a $50 gift certificate eBay offered me.  Here's how it works. You pool your money with family and friends in your social network to to give  someone a present. eBay Group Gifts is a Facebook application that allows you to find and fund gifts for family and friends through your social network and helps share the spirit (and cost) needed to give someone the perfect gift. You can start a eBay Group Gifts to gift siblings, parents,  charities, and for co-workers and friends. Invite your friends and family via Facebook or email to contribute to the cost of the gift via PayPal (credit/debit card included) and it’s ready to go. Check it out at http://groupgifts.ebay.com.  eBay can even make gift  suggestions based on the recipient’s interest on their Facebook Page. I'm still testing driving this, but it's an interesting idea,  I have noticed it doesn't do a great job of suggesting gifts for the person you suggest using Mom, Dad or Friend as search terms.  It's much better when you pick the gift.
  • White House Black Market-- 30% off your entire purchase online or in store with code: 9530.   I love their holiday collection and just bought a great black and white top with white rosette around the bodice on sale!

Holiday Gift Shopping: Remember Free Shipping Day and Coupons

Pictured: The Christmas Tree on Via Rodeo in Beverly Hills (photo: M. Hall on the Olympus EP-1)
I'm just in from an evening out and I took this amazing picture of a Christmas tree  made of poinsettias all light up on Via Rodeo.  Although there's no snow on the ground in California, the tree really puts me in the holiday state of mind.  Is my Christmas shopping done? Hell to the no! I am way behind, how about you?  If you're like me, and you're still shopping, here are a few helpful reminders to help you cut costs.
  • Today, Dec. 17th is free shipping day, with many online retailers offering free shipping on your gift orders.  Check freeshipping, org for all the details.
  • Coupons: Don't forget to take 5 min and look for some savings.  It's easy with all the coupon website aggregators online today.  Coupons for discounts on all kinds of  merchandise can be found at  RedPlum, 8Coupons, Coupon Cabin, CouponMountain.com, Sale.com and RetailME.not.  Remember taking a few minutes to search one of these helpful sites, or doing a Google search for your item, plus the key word "coupon code" can result in real savings.  Most websites allow you save items in your shopping cart, and then come back to them to purchase.  So save your items, and then go look for your savings code. Every little bit helps because it all adds up. Don't forget the coupon widgets for Kohl's and Macy's on the right side of this blog!
  • Check out Coupon sites that benefit charities. KindCoupons.org helps consumers by listing great coupons, and then donating 50% of  their profits to charities. In this economy where charitable giving has declined significantly, this is a noble endeavor!
  • If you're looking for deals on clothes, check out White House Black Market's Daily Deal and Anne Taylor coupons.
  • Finally, don't forget to enter my giveaway for American Express giftcards, here on the blog, open until Dec. 21.
  • Enjoy the holiday season and get your gifts as economically and stress free as possible.

The Gap Launches Project Reindeer: Daily Deals from Deers, Really

As I write, protesters from Peta are picketing the Michael Kors store on Rodeo Drive for Kors' use of real fur in their garments.  While one company (Kors) is using animals for their fashionable fur, another company, the Gap is using animals for a holiday marketing campaign. Guess which one I like better? That would be the marketing campaign.  Starting today, Dec. 15th, starting through Monday December 20th eight real, live Reindeer are going to determine Gap’s in-store deals. Using GPS, the deer’s movements will be tracked and measured against a different goal each day. Every deer will have a deal. Every day will have a winner, and every Gap in America will offer that deer’s deal to the public the very next day.  Project Reindeer is certainly a novel concept for holiday deal offerings.  Just when I thought all the Reindeer would be busy trying to get Santa's toys ready and powering his sleigh, the Gap hi-jacks a team of eight reindeer to power their own sleigh.

Click over to Project Reindeer to check out the deals and the deer.  You can also Tweet from the site to vote for/encourage your favorite deer and their deal.  I don't receive any payment for posting on this deal, I get something MUCH better.  The good guys at the Gap are donating $75  in my name to The Partnership for the Homeless in the spirit of the holiday season.

If you check out Project Reindeer, here's what you'll see. The deer seem to be in an icy winter wonderland and their movements are captured every five minutes on a "pasture cam." How cool is that? I wonder if  "pasture cam" is already trademarked? :)  Each deer has a name to go with their deal.  So far, I like Stella the Deer and her deal of $15.00 cute ballet slippers from the Gap.  The overall deal du jour is 30% off at the Gap.  The deer look very healthy on the "pasture cam." I hope Peta is checking in on them every now and then. They are being cared for by a cute zoologist named Josh with a focus on North American Caribou, so I assume Josh is Peta approved.  Check out Josh on Twitter at :

Kate Middleton Shops her Closet for Engagement Photos

Pictured: Prince William and Kate Middleton. Photo by Mario Testino/Clarence House Press Office via WireImage (Copyright 2010 Mario Testino).
Readers, have you seen the amazing new engagement photos of Kate Middleton with Prince William? The photos are by Mario Testino who took the beautiful photos of Princess Diana for Vanity Fair.  In the more formal portrait (above) commoner Kate looks uncommonly chic in a dress that she has owned for 2 years from her very own closet.  The dress is a rich looking winter white by UK store Reiss. I think the savvy marketing people at Reiss just hit the style jackpot.  According to their blog, they will be reissuing the dress soon.

Kate's Reiss  Nanette dress photo from Reiss.com
"The Nannette dress that Kate is wearing comes as part of our core dress offering that we are renowned for," says Reiss via their blog. "While this particular style is not currently available, there will be a version coming out mid January as part of our SS11 collection." I predict a wait list and a sell-out of the upcoming Nannette dress.

I've written before about Kate's style essentials.  She has always been one to buy off-the rack from popular retailers (the High Street) but wearing an off-the rack dress from two years ago ushers in a new era of royal fashion accessibility. When Diana Spencer was still  Lady Diana she also choose an off-the rack garment for her engagement photo.  Remember the charmingly demure blue suit she wore from Harrod's with the blouse with the little tie bow at the neck?  Reiss is surely upscale but it is not couture priced and they do have sales. If you haven't heard of Reiss, you can check them out online.  They have stores in the US (one right here in Los Angeles), the UK, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Russia, China and the UAE.  I'm sure Reiss retail sales are  skyrocketing as we speak.  Take a look at their holiday sales with shipping  guaranteed for Christmas if ordered before Dec. 16th.  Not bad.

Another item that is now in high demand, is the blouse Kate wore in the more casual engagement photo. That  is the below pictured blouse from UK store Whistles.  In the second engagement photo, Kate was wearing a cream blouse from Whistles. Whistles will also be reissuing the blouse,  two years after it first went on sale.  Jane Shepherdson, chief executive officer of Whistles, said: "We are delighted that Katherine has chosen to wear Whistles in her engagement photographs. "Due to a surge of customer interest, we will be re-releasing the 'Kate' blouse as a limited edition in early 2011."

A more casual engagement photo shows  Kate in a Whistles Blouse. Photo by Mario Testino/Clarence House Press Office via WireImage (Copyright 2010 Mario Testino).

Pictured: Kate's Whistle's silk blouse from 2008, retailed for £ 85 (Photo from ELLE UK)

Despite being offered highly priced designer wear, Kate choose her own style essentials, from her own closet with pieces from Whistles and Reiss.  She also reportedly did her own makeup.  I love her style confidence! In the US, we have a recessionista in the White House in Michelle Obama, who shops the Gap, White House Black Market, J. Crew, Talbot's, H&M and other retailers.  Now it looks like a recessionista may just step into the Palace....although, Kate's style may change when she becomes Princess of Wales, as did Diana's. Stay tuned as the evolution of style continues.

Justin Timberlake, Trace Ayala and friends premiered the new William Rast for Target collection at a private event in Los Angeles this weekend.  I can't tell you anything about the quality of the clothes, because I haven't seen them yet.  What I can tell you is that Target rallied some celebrity star power in advance of the official launch (Dec. 19th) to hype the collection.   Attendees included Rachel Bilson, Minka Kelly (“Parenthood”), Joy Bryant (“Parenthood”), Anna Faris (“Yogi Bear”), Malin Akerman (“Couples Retreat”), Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”), Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”), Chord Overstreet (“Glee”) and Darren Chris (“Glee”).

Rent the Runway Clearance Sale offers Holiday Shopping Deals on Designers

A few months ago I wrote about online designer rental shopping club  Rent the Runway.  I was impressed by their selection of designer dresses and jewelry for special events as well as their return and damage policies.  Now they are doing a little closet cleaning of their inventory to stay "au courant." This offers a great shopping opportunity for those of us look for special Holiday or New Year's party wear, or even...here's a novel thought...gifts for other people.  The sale includes designers like Catherine Malandrino, Matthew Williamson, Lela Rose and Sarah Jessica Parker's fav Halston Heritage.  Of course, you can still rent too, but with the clearance, you now have the option to buy too, if you want to own.

If you want to check it out, you can join using my referral link.   If you use my link, I receive a referral fee when you rent or buy, and you can also refer your friends and receive a credit to bring the cost of your rental down.  Discount shopping and credits are some of my favorite recessionista tools. :)

Holiday Trend: The Fashionable Flask

Pictured: An array of beautiful flasks in all colors, shapes and sizes at my local mall (photo: M. Hall)

I was out shopping today at my local mall, as is my wont, when I saw the above collection of beautiful liquor flasks for holiday gift giving in one of the shops.  It seems that in the recession that the flask, for the hip pocket or for inside your purse, is enjoying a remarkable resurgence.  Flasks were popular in the Victorian era as a way to carry spirits along for an occasional nip of brandy or something stronger.   In the 1920's they become a way to carry your own liquor, and hide it during prohibition when bottled liquor wasn't available at a store for purchase.  Today, many of my friends are carrying flasks to defray the costs of buying drinks when they go out.  According to website Trend Central, "Dandy style appeal aside, the flask trend is more likely – dare we say it – a recession thing. Why pay for a weak $14 cocktail when you can just order a $2 beer and sneak your own shots of homemade infused vodka? "

In the current economy, the flask has now become a fashion accessory.  As you can see from the picture above, there are now monogrammed flasks, richly detailed, colored enamel flasks, leather flasks and fabric flasks. Naturally, I have a few flask favorites.  For style, I recommend Celia Birtwell's adorable Mademoiselle Hip Flask in Pink.  It's hard to resist such a charming liquor carrier for your favorite "tipple."  The amazing Ms. Birtwell now ships to the US and well as the UK so that more of her fans can enjoy her fashionable delights.

Pictured: Celia Birtwell's Mademoiselle Pink Flask makes a terrific and fashionable holiday gift.

If you need a little pick me up, and don't want to spend $10.00 to $15.00 for a cocktail at a swanky bar/restaurant, then a charming flask is your new best friend! Simply sequester it in a favorite handbag, filled with rum, vodka, or gin,  then bring it out to give life to your purchased Lemonade, Arnold Palmer, Coke or other restaurant "soft drink."  Even better, bring your own packet of  Crystal Light, mix it with free water at the restaurant table, then pour in a little of the contents of your fashionable flash.  Voila, you have a delicious and economical drink.  Even better, bring your flask on a hotel stay and eschew the mini-bar.  I'm not advocating drinking.  I'm just saying...there are ways to have your drink and save too.

Pictured: The Vive la Recession flask makes a statement for just $26.00 US.

The ultimate recession flask is of course the " Vive la Recession" flask.  The copy  for the flask on the New Museum website notes that "Vive la Recession came out of long drunken sessions amongst unemployed friends celebrating the fact that though they were not working, they were still rich in company, creativity, and conversation." Clearly, the flask is part of a new recession renaissance.  Look for flasks at J. Crew, Urban Outfitters, and even Amazon.com.  Prices for flasks range from $4.99 (the Girls' Nite Out Flask on Amazon) to $100.00.  The average price is under $40.00 USD making a  fashionable flask a good deal for carrying your own drinks, and for holiday gift giving.
