Kinder Aggugini for Macy's Budget Line Arrives Feb. 15

Kinder Aggugini for Macy's long sleeved dress
Isn't this blue dress with the white geometric patterns amazing? And even more amazing is the price.  It will be sold for $68.00 US at Macy's stores on Feb. 15th.   The dress is designed by Kinder Aggugini, a talented, but not exactly famous designer.  Macy's is going to give H&M a run for their money with their new line of well-priced fashions. Kinder is the first designer in a series of collections for Macy's that will include Matthew Williamson and later Karl Lagerfeld.  Kinder Aggugini  has worked for Vivienne Westwood and Calvin Klein.  He's well known in fashion circles, but he is virtually unknown to American mainstream shoppers who visit retailers like Macy's. It will be interesting to see if he can bring fashionistas into Macy's.
Based on the style of the dress above, if shoppers find his clothes at Macy's, I think they will love them.  There is a black and white trimmed cardigan in the collection's look book priced at $78.00 that is to die for.

Designer Aggugini  told NBC New York, "I want to do clothes that stand on their own. So you don't have to look at the price tag to decide whether you want to buy it. I want people to be surprised by the prices. Friends of mine say, who needs a boyfriend when you have shoes like that. That's what I want to do, the kind of clothes that people would die for."    I can't wait to see his collection of dresses, jackets and even shorts on the Macy's sales floor.  Next up for Macy's, H&M Alumni Matthew Williamson.

Hot on the heels of the SAG Awards Red Carpet, eBay is going to open up their fashion vault on Monday, Jan. 31st with some red carpet worthy jewelry.  Most of the stars at the SAG Awards were lent jewelry for the ceremony, and they have to return it the next day to jewelers like Chopard, Harry Winston and Cartier.  But if you shop the eBay sale you just might find some deals on expensive pieces from high-end jewelry designers like Temple St. Clair, Harry Winston, Mikimoto and more that you'll be able to invest in and keep forever.  The sale runs thru Friday, February 4th on eBay Fashion Vault, just in time for Valentine's gift giving.

For extra savings at the sale, opt-in to the Fashion Vault In Crowd, you’ll receive additional discount coupons and early shopping access for future Fashion Vault sales. If you become and In Crowd member and encourage your friends to join,  when your friend joins AND makes their first purchase, you’ll receive a $10 eBay gift card!   Those savings can come in very handy when your shopping for diamonds...still a girl's best friend.

I'll be checking out the sale.  I want to see how low those prices really are, especially on Temple St. Clair.

Sunday Savvy: The Fred Segal Sale Ends Today

In the words of Jim Morrison, "This is the end, beautiful friend." Yes, the end of the Fred Segal sale.  If you are in the Los Angeles area, and you are a savvy shopper, you should be on high alert.  Everything on the sale is now reduced to 75% off of the original retail price. I stopped in the Santa Monica store yesterday and there were still plenty of great deals to be found. Following are some of my top picks at the sale:

Robbi & Nikki-  I love this very feminine line by award-winning designer Robert Rodriguez and his business partner Nicola Guarna. The draping is gorgeous and there are lots of exquisite touches and embellishments (sequins, beads, even roping.)  Look for quality fabrics, delicate beading, flattering ruching and delicate ruffles around necklines and shoulders.  I bought two great pieces (a silk chiffon shirred blouse and a crop-tie wrap sweater) from this line, and I will be back to shop the spring collection at Fred Segal Santa Monica when it arrives.

Fred Segal Couture: A great selection of very hot haute couture.  It's still pricey, but take 75% off of a $500.00  or $800.00 price tag, and it's a deal for what it is.  Some great pieces by Moschino, Viktor & Rolf, Phillip Lim, Thakoon, and one of my personal favorite Alberta Ferretti.

Babakul-  Boho Chic from True Religion co-founder Kym Gold. If you loved Jovovich Hawk (as I did) odds are that you will like Babakul.  The pieces are very romantic with frilly blouses, classic blazers and vintage style wrap dresses.  The Babakul boutique just opened in December at Fred Segal Santa Monica.  Take this opportunity to check out this new California collection at deep discounts.  Sizing is contemporary, or so you may need to try on a larger size than you typically take.

Hats-- If you love a good hat, you need to check out Fred Segal Santa Monica.  There are vintage inspired chapeaus, beach hats, berets, hats with feathers and more. Look for the bins on the floor in hat boutique with hats for $10.00, $20.00 and there may even be a few for $5.00.  A great hat is not only fashionable it's a great way to protect your skin from sun, not to mention hide a bad hair day :)

Stilla Cosmetics-- everything from mascara to lipstick to Barbie branded makeup at deep discounts.

Korres Natural Products --Great deals on the skincare products and candles (I stocked up on the amazing Quince candles.)

So if you have the time and the inclination to venture out in the LA rain, check out the final day of the Fred Segal sale.  There are some great savings on very high-end merchandise.

William Rast for Target Hits the Clearance Racks

As I predicted in my review of William Rast for Target back in December, the entire collection has gone to clearance and is priced at 50% off  the original Target retail prices.  The leather jackets once priced at almost $200.00 US are now about $100.00. Sadly, this was a case of a mass produced designer collection that failed to meet expectations, and savvy shoppers didn't snap it up. The collection is sized small and is not particularly well made. Even the online reviews on Target.com attest to that. Some pieces are better than others of course, but overall it was more miss than hit.

If you're a fan of William Rast , you might want to check their women's jeans on sale this week at the Beyond the Rack shopping club.

H&M's Waste Collection will only be in One Store Per Country

I was all excited about getting one of the jackets from the H&M waste collection, until I found out how limited the distribution will be. Sorry darlings, odds are you won't see "Waste" at your local H&M store.  There just must not be enough fabric scraps left on the cutting room floor.  In case you missed my earlier post on the collection , "Waste" collection is made of left over materials from the Lanvin for H&M collection. It is a small collection and only available in about 1 store per country. The collection consists of about 10 pieces; a tank top, a tunic, 2 sets of jackets and skirts, and 4 different shoppers/totes.  The collection will be in stores the first week in February and will carry a special hang tang.  In the US, it will only be carried at the H&M'sNew York City flagship store on 5th Ave at 51st street.   Check your local H&M website for availability in your country.  I'll be looking for it on eBay.

A collection that will enjoy a wider distribution will be Target's upcoming Calypso St. Bart resort wear.  Check out Target Addict to get all the details.

Hot Tip: White House Black Market Reversible Belt on the cover of ELLE

Katie Holmes seems to be kicking off a new career as a model.  She's just been announced as the new face of Ann Taylor, and now she's on the February  issue of ELLE Magazine as their cover model.  Inside the magazine, Katie models not Ann Taylor, but  pricey pieces from Tom Ford and Philip Lim 3.1. However, on the cover, she shows off one  great and affordable wardrobe piece:  White House Black Market's reversible patent belt,   which retails for $38.00 USD.  The belt is black on one side and white on the other.   It's a "twofor"  two belts for the price of one.   When I interviewed style expert and author, Lloyd Boston last year, he recommended that women add a slim or wide belt to a dress, sweater or blazer to always emphasize the slimmest part of their shape,  the waist.  If you're looking to streamline your figure, remember to "Belt It" with a versatile belt like the WHBM reversible piece.

To see more of Katie's ELLE fashion spread and interview, click here to go to the article.  Katie also mentions her own clothing line, Holmes & Yang.  The Holmes & Yang  collection ( the Yang is stylist Jeanne Yang) was  launched here in Los Angeles and Katie is sometimes seen wearing pieces on the Red Carpet. Note, Holmes & Rang is not a budget line, and prices run up to $3,000. USD.  It is sold a at Maxfield on Melrose in Los Angeles. It's a very different price point than the Ann Taylor fashions she will be modeling.

The Recessionista's Fashion & News Round-Up

The materials from the Lanvin for H&M collection have been reused to create the Waste collection
There's been so much chic n'cheap fashion news in the last few week's that I thought it was time for a round-up of all the news stories.

Waste not Want Not: First up, H&M has announced that they will be selling a new spring collection, with er, a kinda of "waste management " angle  I kid you not, the new collection entitled simply "Waste" promises to arrive at select stores soon and is made from the left over fabric used to create H&M Lanvin collection. See the picture above for some of the pieces.  There's a brightly colored harlequin tunic made from scraps of the material used to create the dresses.  Even better is the short zebra stripped jacket made from the trench coat fabric.  Kudos to H&M for turning around the bad press they had last year for dumping clothes and then  recycling fabric into new pieces. If you're in Los Angeles, and still lusting for the Lanvin from H&M pieces, there are a few dresses and coats left at the Sunset store.  I keep wondering if they will go on sale.

Katie Holmes is the new face of Ann Taylor:  The new "model" for Ann Taylor is Mrs. Tom Cruise, aka, Katie Holmes.  I do think Katie is a good choice for the Ann Taylor brand. She does wear expensive designer brands, but she also has made more frugal choices.  When she wore the Rodarte for Gap white shirt with the ruffle around the neck a few years ago, I went right out and bought it. To check out what's new at Ann Taylor and save, go to CouponMountain and get their Anne Taylor coupons.

J Crew Sale:  The J Crew 40% off sale has begun.  I can't help but wonder if Mrs. Obama is shopping it since she has been a frugal fan of theirs.  There are some great deals on fashion, accessories and even sleepwear for men, women and children.

Fashion Find: Norma Kamali's Black Ruched One Piece at Walmart for $24.00
New Norma Kamali at Walmart: Walmart seems to have restocked their fabuless Norma Kamali collection post holidays. I just ordered a few items, and they are all super.  I have to give a special shout out to the black ruched, one piece swimsuit.  The fit is fantastic, and it is the Walmart suit most similar to Madame Kamali's high-end collection that I have seen yet. This suit is amazing.  I just got mine, and wore it to the pool today (remember I am in California) . I'll probably order another one of these, since they are only $24.00 and they are so flattering.

Golden Globes Fashion: The Looks for Less

Pictured: Piper Perabo alongside a doppleganger of her Oscar gown. (photo: Getty Images)
The Red Carpet at the recent Golden Globes was alive with some of the best designer gowns in fashion today.  We saw garments from Donna Karan, Lanvin, Monique Lhuillier, Versace, Vera Wang, Calvin Klein and the above pictured black Oscar De La Renta gown.  Although there was lots of color on the Red Carpet  Piper Perabo's back Oscar with the fishtail was one of my favorites. If any of you are looking to replicate Piper's chic simple black gown, look now further than eDressMe.com.   They have a similar dress for $250.00 US.

Pictured: Mila Jovovich in Armani Privé alongside a look a alike from Unique Vintage.
Another dress I loved on the Globes Red Carpet was Mila Jovovich's stunning Giorgio Armani Privé evening gown. The off the shoulder bodice, mermaid bottom and beading screamed old Hollywood glamour.  If you're look for something similar (not an exact duplicate), click over to Unique Vintage and check out their Alabaster prom dress by Mignon for $298.00. It's not an exact match, but then again, it's for a special occasion or prom not the red carpet.

Mrs. Douglas in LA Home Girl Monique Lhuillier (photo Getty Images.)
Some of the dresses I loved on the Red Carpet like Catherine Zeta-Jones jacquard brocade Monique Lhuillier can't be duplicated.   There is no peer for all that detail.  She looked amazing.  If any of you find a good replicate, let me know.  A site called Dino Direct has a ruffled bridal gown for under $200.00 that has the ruffled skirt, but not the incredible detailed.

What do you think readers? Any favorite gowns you have found "replicas" of?

Golden Globes Jewelry Looks for Less

Pictured: Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad  dress and  Harry Winston earrings.
Credit: Jason Merritt, Steve Granitz; Photos: Getty, Wire Image

In case you missed it the Golden Globes were broadcast tonight.  As predicted, there was plenty of color on the Red Carpet with Julianne Moore in her hot pink Lanvin and Angelina Jolie in a sparkling green Versace Atelier. Many of the stars opted for simple platinum and diamond pieces.  Why platinum? Platinum is naturally white, so it enhances the dazzle of diamonds. Stars like Catherine Zeta Jones, Natalie Portman, Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson and January Jones all lit up the red carpet in dazzling diamonds in platinum settings.

Jennifer Lopez wore platinum and diamond earrings (pictured above.) Her earrings were large clusters from Harry Winston. I love this vintage cluster earring look, and it's easily replicated with a good pair of CZs in the right settings.   Similar cluster earring styles are available from emitations, Amazon.com and Fantasy Jewelry Box.com.

Pregnant Natalie Portman looked radiant in a strapless Viktor & Rolf gown with a red rose embellishment on the bodice.  Natalie accented her strapless gown with a platinum and diamond collar necklace and diamond stud earrings from Tiffany & Co.  Natalie's jewelry was on loan from Tiffany's and is worth thousands.   If you liked her look, check out low-priced costume jeweler Fantasy Jewelry Box.  They have a necklace and earrings very similar to Natalie's look for under $100.00 US.

Scarlett Johansson wore her hair up with diamond brooches. Credit: Harrison; Photos: Getty
One of my favorite looks of the night was Scarlett Johansson in her romantic Elie Saab’s beaded peachy gown.  Her dress had so much sparkle, she didn't need a necklace or large earrings. Instead, she accented her look by wearing her hair up and using diamond brooches as hair pins.  This look is easily achieved by buying bridal hair barrettes, or embellished barrettes at discounters like H&M. Embellished barrettes are a cheap and cheerful way to brighten and outfit for $35.00 or less.

What was your favorite look of the night readers?

Golden Globes 2011: Fashion and Jewelry Trend Predictions

Pictured: A Gorgeous Diamond Pendant Necklace by Platinum Guild International on display for the perusal of Golden Globe nominees.   The piece will be auctioned after the Globes to benefit breast cancer research. (photo: M. Hall)

In case you haven''t heard, Hollywood and the Foreign Press are gearing up for the Golden Globe awards tomorrow night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Every year, I reserve time to watch The Golden Globes. What's so cool about watching the Golden Globes (if you're in "Recessionista lock-down" spending mode) is that you get to live vicariously. The show provides all of the fashion, none of the guilt. You just get to watch the fashions and wonderful jewelry and it doesn't cost a penny. It's guilt- less glamour, free at home entertainment.  Last year's ceremony was a bit somber.  If you remember it was raining buckets and the Red Carpet was flooded. Remember Penelope Cruz holding her umbrella?   The gowns and jewelry were very subdued with many black or white monochromatic dresses, highlighted by simple pieces like emerald drop earrings or a diamond tassel necklace.  So what can we expect this year when the sun is finally shinning?  To help answer that question, I visited the Golden Globes Stylelab Jewelry suite yesterday evening to interview jewelry and style expert, Michael O'Connor.

Pictured: Jewelry expert & stylist Michael O'Connor shows off some of the more "whimsical" jewelry pieces from Parisian firm Georland that Golden Globe attendees might wish to wear. (photo M. Hall)

Unlike last year's ceremony, Michael thinks we are going to see lots of colorful dresses this year paired with statement pieces of jewelry.  "With the gowns, look for a wide range of colors, " notes Michael. " I think we'll see more simple dresses but with more exaggerated accents like ruffles.  That means, the stars will usually look for bigger pieces pieces of jewelry to standout."  InStyle‘s Fashion Director Hal Rubenstein agrees. “This is going to be a big color season,” he says.

To help attendees pick the right pieces of jewelry, the Golden Globes jewelry suite features everything from vintage looks to more whimsical pieces like butterfly pins and frog rings. Yes, you heard me a Georland Frog ring was on display, which I was told several actresses wanted.  All pieces are offered on loan to the attendees, and must be returned the day after the ceremony.  Prior to my arrival at the jewelry suite, stars from TV's The Office, Modern Family and True Blood had all stopped by to select pieces. The suite featured stunning pieces from jewelry designers Neil Lane, Dena Kemp, AGTA Collection, Georland (the butterfly brooches and the frog ring), Platinum Guild International, Jewelry by Gail, and men's watches by Perrelet.  All were lust worthy, but I particularly loved this dazzling cuff by Dena Kemp.

Pictured: My favorite, a Dena Kemp cuff with a very vintage, 1920s look. (photo: M. Hall)

Stylist Michael also thinks we'll see more men on the Red Carpet showing off jewelry in the from of lapel pins and cuff links. "This generation of male stars are more comfortable wearing jewelry and they grew up with it," notes Michael.  Check out some of the jewelry shown at the suite for men to choose in the picture below.

Pictured: The Vintage Vibe:  lapel pins and cuff links for men. (photo: M. Hall)

It will be interesting to see who wears what this year.  "It's a cleaner moment in fashion and accessories right now," said Hal Rubenstein, In-Style Magazine Fashion Director in an interview on Golden Globes Fashion with CNN today.  I take that to mean we won't see any over the top, excesses tomorrow night.  Instead, let's hope for full-on tasteful Hollywood glamour from nominees Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, Annette Benning  and Halle Berry.  Halle Berry can be credited for kicking Globes Red Carpet fashion into the Haute zone after wearing a red and white Valentino gown a few years back.  She always makes interesting choices.   And I can't wait to see what my favorite Mr. Darcy, and Best Actor nominee for The King's Speech, Colin Firth wears.  Maybe a lapel pin ala the King he played, George VI? :)

Look for my picks on the "looks for less" after The Golden Globes airs.

Deal of the Week: Juicy Couture Jewelry on Sale at Ideeli

I'm ending the week with a little fashion bling! Ideeli is having a fabu-less sale on Juicy Couture jewelry including some of their special, vintage looking little rings.  I've been trying to buy the Silver Gold Pave Juicy Bow ring pictured above for some time, but it sold out over the holidays on the Juicy Couture website, and I wasn't able to find it anywhere else.  Well, Ideeli has made my week by offering this adorable little ring and other Juicy Couture and jewelry on a special sale this week.  The ring was $68.00 at Juicy Couture, but it's now offered for $29.00 at the Ideeli sale.  Everything is about 60% off the Juicy Couture retail prices.  So if you like subtle little pieces like my favorite little bow ring (similar to one Chanel designed in the 1930s), then do check out the Ideeli sale.

If you're not already a member of Ideeli, click here to use my invite to join and shop the sale as my guest. In the interests of full disclosure, I do earn a referral fee from Ideeli if you join and shop.  You will also earn a referral fee if you join, and then your friends join and shop.  The referrals become a good way to stretch your shopping dollars and spread the savings.

Target Stores to Open in Canada

It's finally happening. Toronto Life reports that Target is coming to Canada.  Target stores will join American companies like J. Crew, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney and Crate and Barrel who have already opened outlets in Canada.  I know many of my Canadian readers will be thrilled at this news. Now they will have the chance to check out Target's designer collections (maybe even the forthcoming Calypso St. Bart).   However, this is not happening quickly. By 2013, the Target stores are expected to open in Canada, replacing the HBC-owned chain Zellers. According to  Toronto Life "In a $1.8-billion deal announced Thursday, Target Corp. will acquire and convert most of the Zellers stores in Canada from parent company Hudson Bay Co., while the rest of the Target stores will be picked up by other retail enterprises. The Zellers takeover is similar to when Wal-Mart entered the Canadian market after snapping up Woolco stores in 1994."

Book Giveaway: The Frugalista Files that rarest of things an original!

My friend and fellow blogger the original Frugalista®, Natalie McNeal, has written a book...called...can you guess, The Frugalista Files. It's the story of how she took stock of her finances and got out of debt. Mmm...sounds kind of familiar. I also have a book I hope to publish, but this is not my story.  You see dear readers, a Frugalista is very different than a Recessionista.  In my humble opinion at least.  If you followed the blog, The Frugalista Files , then you know that for a time, Natalie really was on an austerity program.   She gave up her manicures, hair treatments, and pedicures for 30 days and took a vow of "frugality." From there, she went on to right-size her budget and finances.  The Frugalista Files has always been more focused on personal finance, whereas yours truly, The Recessionista, has been more focused on living the luxe life (read serious Chanel addiction)  for less.  When both of us started our blogs, we were among the first to put a personality and a meaning to our respective blog names. In 2008, we started blogging in an attempt to give voice to the legions of consumers and shoppers struggling to rebalance their lives and finances in the economic downturn.  Our goal was give voice to the "little guys" via blogging or what I call authentic voice.  There is no magazine editor or advertiser editing or altering the words of a typical blogger. After all, blogs are deeply personal and are like diaries. Since Natalie and I started our respective blogs, it is unbelievable to me the number of large corporations who have picked up on the terms Frugalista and Recessionista and used them to brand their own blogs, newspaper columns, books, shopping sites, products or advertising.  In my opinion, these corporate entities are using the terms not to give voice to the working man or women, but rather to sell something.   They are not trying to create social dialogue via the new form of social media, but rather to make money. Like a fake Louis Vuitton bag, these copycats just stink.  Most of them don't try to offer advice or tips to help people through tough times.  To me, there's nothing Frugalista about Nina Garcia.  She's great on Project Runway, but I'd be surprised if she's on a budget or concerned about living on a limited income. That's why I am SO excited that Natalie has been able to maintain her blog, and her voice among the many imitators and knock-offs.   Even more exciting, I am glad to see her in print as a published author.  Score one for the good guys.  Her book tells the story of how she got out of debt and still managed to maintain her quality of life.  It is not ghost written or full of glossy celebrity pictures.  And that's why I love it.  It's real.  And it's original. Originality is something all the knock-off frugalistas and recessionistas can't quite copy.

As I read The Frugalista Files, and I think it's a story many women, and men, can relate too.  We all work hard, and at the end of the day we do want to treat ourselves by eating out, having a few drinks, spa-ing and even shopping. After a while of course, all these pleasures can add up, and some of us get a big wake up call when we receive our monthly credit card bills. Most of us don't keep track of credit card spending the way we keep track of cash spending.  Before we know it, we can wind up in debt.  And that's what happened to Natalie.  This book is written like a diary, which makes it a fun and charming read.   Natalie gets a financial alarm via her credit card bills but she works hard  to take action and turn it around. Like going on a diet, the biggest element in going frugal is motivation and inspiration.  I think Natalie's journey will both inspire and motivate others to learn how to better manage their spending.  Her story will also make you laugh. Particularly when she admits,"My name is Natalie and I'm a spending slut."  I laughed so hard I snorted when I read that bit of prose.

Because I love this book so much, I want to share it with my readers!   I am giving away a copy.  Here's what you need to do to win a copy of this book.  Here's what you need to do to win.

    • Tell me how you've become more frugal in your own life.
    • Please leave an email address (mary at yahoo dot com) in your comment so I can find you.
    • Contest will run until midnight,  PST Wed. Jan. 19th, 2011
May the best Frugalista win! :)

Discovering Pre-Loved Chic at Adore Boutique

Pictured: A vintage Louis Vuitton steamer case surrounded by handbags at Adore (photo: M. Hall)
Every holiday season my Mom and I make our post Christmas pilgrimage to thrift and consignment stores.   In Cary, NC, where my Mom lives, it's amazing the treasures we have found at prices much less than  resale stores in New York City, Orange County, Los Angeles or London. This holiday season we discovered Adore Boutique in Cary.   This little store is a wonderland of Chanel, Burberry, St. John, Armani, Escada, Louis Vuitton, Celine and Trina Turk, to name just a few. I've been thrifting since my college days, and I have rarely seen such a great selection of pre-loved designer goods, in such good condition, at reasonable prices.  This is not Los Angeles' pricey DecadesTwo where you have to compete with Hollywood stylists and stars for high-priced items (nothing against Decades, they are terrific too.) Adore Boutique is hidden away in a little group of shops and restaurants in Cary, NC in a tiny strip mall.  And good news readers, soon you can all shop Adore as the owner, Nancy Alinovi will be launching an online store soon.  Watch this space for news of the store opening and a special discount for The Recessionista's readers.

Pictured: Come to Mama! Chanel Jacket on Sale at Adore Boutique in like new condition. (photo M. Hall)

So what's so special about Adore Boutique.  Let's discuss. First, the amount of quality merchandise is staggering.  Usually when I go to consignment stores I am prepared to spend several hours sorting through piles of junk, looking for a few treasures.  Great patience is usually required to find the right items at the right price. Not so at Adore Boutique.  The store is loaded with great items, and the owner has already thoughtfully done the sorting for you.  Rows of St. John suits are marked with signs.  Chanel and Burberry items are right at the front of the store.  Designer handbags and shoes are placed in separate display areas, they are not all jumbled together.   The rear of the store has racks of cheaper items that are vintage, or from retailers like J. Crew, Jones New York, Ann Taylor and the Loft.  I asked the owner Nancy, how she has managed to acquire such a great collection of merchandise. " We are about 75% consigned items and the rest are used items that I buy outright as well as new wholesale and such. I go to trade shows and buy small amounts of items I think would be good for the store and that can have good price points," says Nancy Alinovi . "I have also bought out inventory from other boutiques that have gone out of business. I have always been a bargain hunter and into fashion so I feel I have a pretty eye and know my labels well."  Clearly, Nancy has an eagle eye and a clear love of fashion.   This is what makes her store unique.   The other thing that makes Adore Boutique unique is the high-level of customer service.  Service is often a rarity when shopping at consignment boutiques.  I have wandered into many stores and never been greeted, or asked if I needed help.  Sometimes when prices are low, service is also low.  This is not the case at Adore Boutiques.  We received lots of help, including items being bought into the fitting room by the store's staff, and pulls of items by specific designers we were looking for.

Pictured: A case of treasures, Chanel handbags plus Burberry scarves and bags  (photo: M.Hall)
With so much great inventory, I had to ask Nancy if there are items that they don't take for resale.  It's no surprise that many items are turned away. "Our top sellers are tops and purses. Slacks (jeans not included), skirts and suits are our slowest moving items, no matter what the label is. Many people are bringing in suits because of two reasons, the work force is less formal and also with the unemployment rate less people are working and have the need to look so conservative," she notes. "We have basically stopped taking suits unless of course it is a fab cut and label. (I have some truly amazing Theirry Mugler vintage suits!)"

Pictured: The Recessionista Sr., my mom shopping for Pearls at Adore.  (M. Hall)

If you're lucky enough to be visiting the Research Triangle Park (RTP) area of North Carolina, and you love fashion, I highly suggest you make the trek over to Adore.  Quite simply, you will adore it.  I left with a quilted Chanel handbag (the winter white bag, in the case above.) The bag is in pristine condition and came with the authenticity card and dust bag. My mom (a/k/a The Recessionista Sr.) came away with a lovely string of pearls from jeweler Jared (in their original case.) We returned two other sets of  new, purchased pearls that were flawed, so it was quite a surprise to find a perfect set at a consignment store.  As fabu-less as the Adore Boutique is in person, the online store promises more treasures.  I asked Nancy to give us a hint at what we can expect.  "The online store, should be up in February and  will focus on high end collections and collectible vintage," says Nancy.  "For our opening, we plan on highlighting an Etro collection, some Kieselstein-Cord purses and belts as well as some Chanel ready to wear and various collectible pieces (like a vintage mint Roberta Di Camerino handbag!)"

Remember readers, check those consignment shops (and Goodwill too) in your area for treasures. Thrifting at the end of the year and the beginning of the New Year is one of the best times to find high-end goods.  The end of the year is when wonderful donations are usually made by donnees/consignees seeking year-end tax deductions and write-offs.  Their loss quite simply becomes your gain.  Like my new Chanel bag.

Consumer Survey: More Consumers Shopping Smart by using Technology

IBM  just announced the results from a survey of more than 30,000 consumers.  The findings are interesting, and confirm what I've been saying here for sometime on this blog.  Consumers are still shopping , but they are shopping smarter by using technology to find deals.  That includes social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google, Blogs) and Mobile Technology (apps like Frugalytics.)  According to IBM's press release, "while shoppers are optimistic about the future, they have developed attitudes during the global recession over the past several years that still dictate their behavior:  They buy what they need, search for items on sale and wait longer to purchase, and they have embraced the use of technology throughout every step of the process."
    According to the study:
So take heart smart shoppers, the savings are at your fingertips. When you use the web, coupons, blogs or social media to shop, you are shopping smart and saving.   All it takes to save is to do a little research before you hit the buy button.  Search for that sale, promo code or special event that well bring you saves.  Smart shopping is not an austerity program, it's about living well while spending less.  With the power of the Internet and our Mobile phones, this is the best time to shop and save in history.  What is your favorite source of getting deals or savings?

Tasteless Celebrity Merchandise: It's not Cheap or Chic

    Tori Spelling "Bracelet" from HSN.

Witness this incredible atrocity that HSN is passing off as jewelry under the moniker of Tori Spelling.  Even more frightening, this piece is now a customer pick on HSN.  WTF is Tori doing  allegedly designing jewelry any way?  The words "questionable taste" come to mind. The above bracelet is from Tori's  HSN (Home Shopping Network) collection and retails for...wait for it, a whooping $59.95.  No offense Tori , but that ain't right.

In addition to Tori's designs, there are more Medusa worthy items on HSN.  I still cringe when I think of the Mariah Carey jewelry and accessories collection.  It makes me want to scream for Chanel to return from the dead. Chanel intimated that true luxury had to do with being fashionably tasteful.   “I love luxury, " she said. " And luxury lies not in richness and ornateness but in the absence of vulgarity. Vulgarity is the ugliest word in our language. I stay in the game to fight it.”  Where is Chanel when we need her?  Vulgarity is everywhere.

Mariah Carey's Chain Quilted Boots from HSN retail for  approximately $150.00 US.
From the Kardashian's clothing line (Tim Gunn has called it vulgar) to Jessica Simpson bags and shoes,  every season more and more horrific, celebrity labeled fashion items appear and flood the market.  Just because we like an actor or actress, or singer, does that mean we need jeans with their moniker on the arse? Here's a little inventory of the celebs trying to play fashion designer: Lauren Conrad, Jessica Simpson, Elizabeth Hurley, Reba McIntyre, J Lo, Kate Moss, Inman,  Heidi Klum, The Olsen twins, Miley Cyrus, 50 Cent, P. Diddy (aka Puff Daddy) , Madonna,  Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Joan Rivers, The Trumps and Fergie.  It's dizzying.  Consumers, take a breath and step back from the celebrity labels.  There are plenty of great designers who are trained to design clothing and accessories.  Isn't that  what luxury is about, garments that are tasteful, well cut and well made?  Not this current crop of cheaply made goods, marked up to pay the celebrity a licensing fee. Celebrity fashion has become the epitome of the high cost of cheap.

Readers, are you as over these celebrity labels as I am?

Los Angeles: Fred Segal Santa Monica Sale Starts January 14th

Alert the media! The annual the Fred Segal sale is about to begin on January 14th.  As a frugal fashionista, Fred Segal sales and special events are about the only time of the year I step foot into the eclectic Fred Segal store.  The store is not so much a store as a collection of little private boutiques.  They have treasures and funky items you won't find anywhere else.  They even sell my beloved English scents from Penhaligon's now, plus LA brands like James Perse and Lauren Conrad. You'll see both stars and their stylists roaming the store looking for deals.   And don't even get me started on the parking situation for the sale..it's horrific. Click here to check their website for fashion and trends. My advice, go early, get the deals and get out, as it's bound to be mad.

Deal Alert: Old Navy Yoga Pants for $12.00

If one of your New Year's resolutions was to work out more often , or to loose weight, then Old Navy has a deal for you.  They are having a sale on Yoga Pants and other "active styles" for just $12.00.  The sale also includes hoodies, tanks with shelf bras, and yoga bras.  If you order more than $50.00, you will receive free shipping.  I don't shop a lot at Old Navy, because frankly, some of their stuff is not built to last shall we say.  But for active wear, which I continually replace throughout the year when I am working out, I would say this is a good price.  Old Navy shoppers seem to agree, as the Old Navy website is full of testimonials from customers attesting to the comfort of their active wear.   What do you think?  Old Navy is not the only retailer offering discount workout gear.  Norma Kamali has been doing jog pants, leggings and T-s for Walmart for about $10.00.  TJ Maxx & Marshalls offer discounts on famous maker workout gear.   Still, the Old Navy $12.00 price point at New Year's is tough to beat. The sale is on from 1/7 to 1/13 and is for  US only.

Gilt's Wardrobe Refresh: Five Essentials for the New Year Sale

Gilt Groupe is  kicking off the New Year with an interesting "wardrobe refresh" sale. I find it interesting because it's about building your wardrobe around five essential pieces. To me, this is a throw back to an earlier era of dressing, before there were mass retailers and budget stores which offered constantly rotating fashions for the latest styles.  With so many options coming onto the market, and the emphasis on the latest celebrity trends, many of us have gotten away from building our wardrobe around a few basic pieces that we could mix and match simply.  So what are the five wardrobe essentials Gilt Group suggests? Here are their five easy pieces:

    1. The Blazer
    2.  The Classic Shirt
    3.  The Pencil  Skirt
    4.  The Little Black Dress
    5.  The Basic-Trouser (pant)
For a short list, this is a great one. To this essential list, I would add a few of my staples:  a good white shirt, a great pair of ballet flats or neat short heeled pumps, string of pearls or statement piece of jewelry and my personal bête noire a great handbag.  The Gilt sale is on until Jan. 13 and features season less pieces from Jil Saunder, Tibi, Calvin Klein and Nanette LePore.  Click here to shop the Gilt sale as my guest. Of course, you can look for your wardrobe essentials at New Year's sales at Macy's, Loehmann's, Nordstrom's, Kohl's (think Simply Vera) White House Black Market, Ann Taylor, H&M and other retailers.  Now is a great time to refresh your style and sell off old pieces on eBay or donate them to your favorite charity or consignor.

Some Great Deals at the Endless.com New Year's Sale

Pictured: Anne Klein Watch on sale at Endless for $39.99.

Did any of you get cash or gift cards instead of gifts for presents at Christmas?  Sometimes getting the cash, enables you to get better deals at the post holiday sales.  Sometimes the gifts we give ourselves are the ones we really wanted but didn't get.   If you have Christmas cash, then you'll want to check out the Endless.com New Year's site.   I just clicked over to Endless.com to see that they are having (think Rachael Zoe here) MAY-JOR sale on select fall/winter goodies and cold weather footies with up to 45% off over 45,000 shoe and accessory styles.  If you spent the holidays shopping for others, and maybe driving in the torrential rain or snow to get those gifts,  then you may want to check out the Endless sale and just  treat yourself.   The sale includes boots, designer watches, sunglasses and fashionable handbags.

I'm checking out the sale this week, and I have my eye on the Treesje Jovi Cross-Body Bags and some of the watches.  There are savings on a wide variety of designer items.

The Donald Goes Recessionista: Donald Trump Flies Coach

Pictured: Donald Trump Flies Coach from  the January issue of Life & Style Magazine.

Is it frugality or simple practicality that lead millionaire Donald Trump to fly coach on a  recent Jet Blue flight from New York City to Palm Beach?  Only his hairdresser may know for sure. I was reading one of my favorite guilty pleasures this week, Life and Style Magazine, and stumbled upon this delicious picture of Mr. Trump in economy or coach class. Have any of you seen this one?

I find it fascinating that Trump mingled with the peeps in steerage (aka economy).   In my frugal fantasy, I picture him scrunched up in the middle seat, crunching on those crazy "blue" Jet Blue chips and wishing he could fire someone for putting him anywhere but at the sharp end of the plane.  But that may have not have been the case at all. Maybe Trump just figured it was a short trip, so why waste money by spending for a first-class ticket?  He may be holding onto his money with a tighter reign that ever imagined.   I wonder how  his wife Melania's jewelry is selling on QVC? :)  By selecting QVC for her jewelry collection, Mrs. Trump appears to enjoy a bargain. Or at least enjoy selling a bargain.  Maybe her wealthy husband does too.

There's also the possibility that this was a calculated publicity stunt on Trump's part. After all, he keeps hinting he may be considering a run for President.   "For the first time in my life, I'm actually thinking about it [running for president]," Trump told Fox News Channel. He added, "I see what's going on with this country and it's never been worse. What's happening is a disgrace." He'll have to do more than economize by flying coach to convince me he can make meaningful changes.

Rainy Weather and Snow Handbags: Ted Baker Pleather Patent Shopper

Recent weather around the world has caused me to put all my high-end designer bags into storage until dryer days are here again.  Good leather just gets stained with ice and snow, or weather beaten.  The solution: Pleather.  Yes, pleather, a word the The New York Times previously associated with The Recessionista.  And, pleather has never suited me so well as now.  Pleather is nice word for faux leather made with PVC or plastic. The first time I saw a pleather bag I could love it was the Jelly Bag. Later, the Anya Hindmarch bags for Target bought pleather to stylish new heights.  Now, I have discovered a  new stylish pleather bag for winter storm weather: Ted Baker's 'Bow Ikon' Patent Shopper bag (pictured above), now on sale at Nordstrom's for approximately $35.00 US.   I saw the bag in-store yesterday and my heart skipped a beat.  What a fashionable solution to winter woes.  You can use it as a laptop tote, handbag, travel bag or even a chic wine carrier.  Shoppers who have purchased the bag have given it good reviews on Nordstrom's website.  Check out the chic little bow on the left side.  Pleather never looked finer!

As the rain and snow contain to fall, look for pleather totes on clearance.  I saw a few Mulberry bags for 50% off at Target stores.  I wasn't high on the bags for their retail price, but on clearance, I have a new appreciation for some of them. Their plastic parts are tailor made for bad weather.

      The Recessionista's New Year's Resolutions for 2011

Happy New Year to Recessionistas Around the Globe! I'm wishing all of our readers a very happy 2011!  Wow 2010 went quick don't you think? Above is an image of the New Year's celebrations in Times Square New York, NY. This image is from Richard Seamon's excellent website of pictures from various cities around the US. Now that the New Year is here, and the champagne bubbles are fizzing out, the business of New Year's Resolutions begins.

Below is the list I am filling out today: a cute little list of New Year's Resolutions. Note: I do this exercise every New Year's and its best done when not operating heavy machinery :) Sometimes it works, sometimes, not, but I remain addicted to the exercise of documenting my goals for the New Year.

So here are a few of my New Year's Resolutions that are fit to print.

      1) Get back on my diet.  How can you watch the Jennifer Hudson commercials for Weight Watchers and not feel inspired? She looks great and she looks healthy.  She is not scary skinny as are some celebs I see around LA.

Pictured: My diet inspiration, Jennifer Hudson, courtesy of Weight Watchers.

In 2010 I fell off the diet wagon.  Not so much from overeating, but from eating the wrong things.  Sometimes I am rushing and I don't take the time to shop for fresh vegetables or fruit.  It's easier to just pick something up and run.  That was the whole theme of Jamie Oliver's excellent Food Revolution TV show.  Now, I'm going to get back to the gym and back to eating fruits & veggies.   New Year's is always a good time to start a new diet.  In the US. it's practically a national tradition to start a diet the New Year.   If you're reading from the US, you might want to check out Ideeli's Total Well Being sale.  They are offering healthy lifestyle products including cookbooks, blenders, skincare products and even the dreaded...scale.  Isn't the scale the worst?  I hate it, but it is a necessary evil.  If you are not an Ideeli member , click here to use my invitation to join. To check it out as The Recessionista's Guest, click here(note, I am an an Ideeli affiliate and I do earn a fee when you buy on Ideeli.)

Pictured: Start off the New Year with Ideeli's Total Well Being Sale

      2) Pay off my credit cards.  This is the year I really want to pay down, and pay off my cards.  Paying interest rates is not my desired state.  I'm reading Natalie McNeal's bookThe Fruglista Files to learn how she did it.  I'm re-evaluating my financial strategies including my 401k contributions and stock/bond portfolios. Its a good time to move some things around and re access my savings and monthly budgets.

      3) Continue connecting with people via Social Media combined with face-to-face meetings.  In 2010, I met so many wonderful new friends via Social Media, particularly Twitter. I really enjoy sharing with people of similar interests.  It's even more wonderful when I get the opportunity to connect with the real people behind the Twitter IDs, IRL (in real life.) A few weeks ago, I held a small Blogger Soiree with some LA Bloggers just for networking and drinks.  In 2011, I hope to do more of these networking events.  If you're interested, let me know by leaving a comment on the blogger.  The power of community is great, as is the joy of stepping out from behind the blogger and meeting readers and fellow blogger.

      4) Continue to collect vintage:  If you read here, you know I love to collect vintage classics.  I have a collection of vintage Chanel pieces, and recently I acquired my first Irene (legendary designer Irene Lentz.)
I like vintage for a couple reasons: the unique styles, quality fabrics used, recycling clothing rather than throwing it away or sending it to a landfill and distinctive touches.  One of my favorite eBay searches is for items from Bullocks-Wilshire.  I never cease to find amazing, quality vintage items on eBay.

      5) Final resolution, this is the worst one.....clean my house, including the dreaded carpets!
It's still pouring in California and the rest of the country is drowning in snow and sometime mud.  This makes it a good time to crank up my Beatles CD collection and start sweeping!

So that's it. I'm only making 5 resolutions this year. As a Recessionista, I feel empowered to downsize my list of resolutions along with everything else :) And even more ambitious, I'll be going on Weight Watcher's to downsize myself and renew healthy habits.

If you're looking for some more good information and resources for New Year's Resolutions, you might want to check Amazon's list. They've got a nice list of the Top 10 Resolutions plus resources on Amazon to help you implement them.

May 2011 be your be year ever readers! Keep watching the blogs for sale info, interviews with designers, and some amazing new giveaways coming up.
