Oscar Style Report: Gowns for Less

Pictured: Oscar style gowns from Unique Vintage matched to celebrity looks.
Good morning readers!  Did you all watch the Oscars?  It was an amazing night, and I have to see I found the fashions better than the show this year.  I preferred Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to James Franco and Anne Hathaway.   Although I have to admit, Anne Hathaway had some amazing gowns, particularly the red Valentino she wore on the Red Carpet.  But there were a lot  of style winners last night. Jennifer Hudson dazzled in a tangerine Versace.  Natalie Portman looked elegantly pregnant in an eggplant off the shoulder Rodarte gown.  And new comer Mila Kunis had one of the best dresses of the night, a form fitting, well draped Elie Saab.  Trends on this year's Red Carpet included gunmetal (think Helen Mirren in Vivienne Westwood) and dresses with lace overlays (Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana.) In the cool light of dawn, aided by steaming cups of coffee (thank you Starbucks!) I had a look around to see what I could find for look a likes gowns.   Most of us don't have an Oscar night occasion, but with proms, weddings and other formal events, I know some readers will want to scour the discounters for Oscar style.  A good place to start is Unique Vintage.   Their gowns are pictured above in the side by side comparisons to the stars. Their dresses are not exact matches, but they do give you a taste of Oscar style for less.   Prices range from $100.00 to $500.00 for most gowns.

Pictured: Two of my favorites Mila Kunis in Elie Saab and Cate Blanchett in Givenchy  (photos: Getty images.)

Of course not all gowns can be duplicated for a lower price.  One example is Cate Blanchett's Givenchy couture gown with all the pearls and beading.   Watching the Oscar chat of Twitter, it was clear that some viewers loved the gown, while others hated it.  Personally, I loved it.  It had a very vintage 1930s look to it that reminded me of Vionnet.  What did you think readers?

Oscar Style Watch: Sales and Gowns from New York Fashion Week

Are any of you getting "Red Carpet ready" today? Most of us are getting ready to watch the Oscars on TV to see whose wearing what on the Red Carpet. But, if you're in the market to try to shop like you were going to the Oscars, or a special party, online shopping sites Ideeli and Gilt Groupe are both offering sales on Oscar worthy gowns, jewelry and accessories.  Click on the links above to use my invites if you want to check out the sales. Look for more Oscar style gowns on eBay-even a few Elie Saabs are on sale.  So who are you looking forward to seeing on the Red Carpet today? I always love Helen Mirren in Elie Saab or Badgley Mischka with her Chopard jewels. Reese Witherspoon always looks terrific, with her mix vintage and contemporary style.  There were some stunning dresses recently presented at the Fall 2011 NYFW shows that we might see today.   Last year we saw Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel, Sandra Bullock in Marchesa, Kate Winslet in in Yves Saint Laurent and Cameron Diaz in Oscar De La Renta.   We may not see any Dior on the Red Carpet this year due to the scandal surrounding the suspended designer John Galliano. According to The Guardian, "The French fashion house Dior has suspended its star designer, John Galliano, after he was accused of assaulting a couple and making antisemitic insults following a drinking session at a Paris bar." Ouch.

Here's my Oscar style wish list from New York Fashion Week with some gowns I hope we see today.

Donna Karan presented some amazing gowns at the recent fashion week.  Think Grace Kelly in pearly greys and sparkling beads.   The whole show was about refined elegance.  Perfect for some classy  Red Carpet Oscar style. Donna Karan's show at NYFW was all about glamour with lots of pearls, fur wraps and models wearing their hair up in 1960s style buns.  Donna Karan's collection is already on pre-order at Neiman Marcus if you want to check it out.

Carolina Herrera presented her typically luxe looking styles with a few beautiful gowns sprinkled throughout. Ms.  Herrera's show was all about
classic beauty, gloves, some fur, and gorgeous teal and red gowns. Anne Wintour and Grace Coddington looked completely entranced with Carolina Herrera for Fall 2011, and I can't blame them.  I loved this gown on the left with the deep teal skirt and charcoal black contrasting top. Renee Zellweger frequently wears Carolina Herrera on the Red Carpet.

Another Red Carpet favorite is Pamella Roland.  She showed some amazing gowns in her Fall 2011 collection, like this deep emerald green gown on the left.  Doesn't this just scream Angelina Jolie? We've seen a few Pamella Roland gowns this week at pre-Oscar events like the Costume Designers Guild, Women in Film, and even the rain infested QVC Red Carpet Buzz Party.  Hopefully, there will be no rain today, and we'll see some gorgeous Pamella Roland gowns.

Stay tuned for the Red Carpet later today to see who wears what.  Readers, any predictions? And do you have your Oscar voting ballot ready, if not click here to get one via Oscars.com.

Note: All NYFW photos in this post are by me, myself and I  (M. Hall) taken during the recent NYFW.

Oscar Worthy: Therapon Skin Giveaway

With the Oscars coming up tomorrow, every Los Angles beauty salon and spa is on high alert catering to the participants and industry party goers.  Everyone wants that natural, refreshed looking glow.  But how do you get that look without expensive trips to the spa or worse, chemical injections?  Well, finding a good natural skin care line of products is a good way to go. A few weeks ago I attended beauty blogger  Romy Raves Face 2 Face LA which was hosted by Therapon Skin.  The event was held at the ROB B OPI Salon and spa in Sherman Oaks, CA which is a fantastic spa with an amazing roof top patio.  At the event, I was treated to a min-facial with the Therapon products and was very pleasantly surprised.  The products are very light and naturally scented.  After the Therapon  "Theraderm"  facial using the Fruit Acid Exfoliant , my skin had a rosy glow, and I enjoyed the rest of the party in the make-up free zone.  That's how good my skin looked!

Therapon’s Christina Stumbaugh, was at the event to explain the history behind the line. She told me the story of how Therapon came to be and it's fascinating. This is not the typical story of a cosmetic or skin care line that is celebrity endorsed and built for mass-market profit. The line was started by a doctor to help his patients grow new skin after accidents or injuries. Dr.  James S. Beckman, a plastic surgeon, developed the products while treating severely burned patients. Dr. Beckman was looking for skin products to help restore full function and mobility to skin-grafted hands. He developed a highly-specialized restorative crème formulated with ingredients proven to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, allowing the skin-grafted hands to bend normally and grasp objects again. The specialty crème also had the unexpected effect of erasing fine lines and restoring a youthful appearance to aging facial skin.  Voila, Therapon Skin care products were invented.  In order to ensure it's quality, the line is not mass produced, and new products are not made to respond to current trends.  New products are only brought to market after careful research and testing. This helps to ensure the quality of the Therapon products.

Pictured: Our giveaway:  Theraderm's "NuPeel Enzyme Peel."

I'd like to share the Therapon difference with my readers by giving away one of the products I received at the event.  One of my favorite renewing skin regimes has always been an Enzyme Peel Facial. That is why I am giving away Therapon's Thermaderm "NuPeel"  Natural Enzyme Peel to one lucky reader to enjoy their own enzyme facials at home.  Here's what you need to do to enter to win.  Simply leave a comment here, and tell me a little about your current beauty routine and let me know if you've ever had an Enzyme Peel.  If you haven't tried one,  it's time you did!. To enter, simply leave your email address in your comment like so: jane at yahoo dot com, so I can get in touch with you  if you win.   Comments will be accepted until Saturday, March 5th at midnight PST.

Recessionistas on the Red Carpet: Reasonable Fashions

Pictured: Natalie Portman on the Red Carpet in H&M
Actress Natalie Portman looked beautiful this week at a Vanity Fair Oscar party in a $50.00 US White dress from H&M's upcoming Conscious Collection. The dress is made of 100% recycled polyester.  H&M must have given the dress to Natalie for the occasion since the H&M  Conscious Collection is not due in stores until April 14th.

Natalie has worn H&M before on the red carpet (the Lanvin collection), showing that fashion doesn't have to be expensive.   At this week's Costume Designer's Guild Awards (CDGA) I spotted some great inexpensive fashion finds on and off the red carpet. Check out PR Maven Alexandra Lippin below in her $45.00 find.   She looked amazing at the CDGA gala.  Her green dress was full length, although you can't see it in the picture. The designer is unknown.

Pictured: Chic Recessionista Alexandra Lippin at the CDGA awards in her inexpensive vintage dress. (photo: M. Hall)

Remember, you can look great without spending big.  And on the opposite end of the fashion spectrum, every awards season we see Red Carpet gowns that cost a fortune and are just plain fugly.

QVC Oscar Buzz Party Falls Flat

Pictured: The QVC "Red Carpet Buzz Broadcast" underneath a plastic tent in the rain. (photo: M. Hall)
If you think Oscar parties are glamorous, then think again.  Last night's QVC Red Carpet party should have been called for rain.  Held in a tent, in the muddy courtyard at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, QVC was broadcasting live.  I was originally excited to be invited to this event, but not so excited to be there wading through the soggy outdoor courtyard in the cold and the wet.

Pictured: Kim and Kourtney Kardashian talk about the Los Angeles weather and Oscar Styles.

Props to Kim and Kourtney Kardashian for honoring their commitments (although they were not outside in the rain working the tent)  and showing up in high heels and thin dresses at the party to meet fans and plug their QVC wares.  I love how Kourtney said she had to "Run across the street, like with a massive umbrella and almost got run over." They really needed wellies and full on black rain slickers like this QVC member of the film crew was wearing in my picture below.

Pictured; The Live QVC Red Carpet Filming brought out a new fashion trend, the basic black rain slicker.  (Photo: M Hall)

Sorry guys, I can't tell you what great finds QVC has for Oscar season, because I couldn't see any of them in person to judge their quality. There were no samples on display, and no goody bags distributed at the end of the night with any samples for review.  I did see one of my favorite QVC designers, Marc Bouwer, exiting the party shortly after 7 pm as I was heading in.  After struggling through the mud for about 30 min and getting drenched, I followed his good example.  I took refuge across the street at one of my favorite LA restaurants, Il Cielo.  Their patio was also tented, but happily rain proof and warm.  Thanks to Virgil for the excellent Peartini.

Anthropologie Launches Bridal Collection Online: BHLDN.com

Urban Outfitters, the parent company of one of my favorite, but pricey brands, Anthropologie, has launched an online collection of Bridal dresses. Move over Vera Wang , J. Crew and The Limited too. The new online boutique is called www.bhldn.com.  The site offers a collection of  wedding gowns (some very vintage inspired), bridesmaid dresses, party dresses, assorted jewelry, headpieces, footwear, and lingerie.  The intent of course is that you'll enter the web site, and buy everything there from dresses to accessories.

According to press materials the Anthropologie creative team began dreaming up a wedding brand after hearing tales of its customers' nuptials (or was it after J.Crew launched their collection?). "We know our customer, and we know she's looking for a brand that reflects her unique perspective.  She may have interests common to her friends, but she's looking to create a moment that's all her own… it's not so much about our point of view as it is about capturing hers," explains Managing Director, Kristin Norris.

Designers Fleur Wood, Tracy Reese, and Catherine Deane will contribute exclusive designs from the tailored and voluminous, to the soft and draped, or the embroidered and embellished assortment, complete with refinements like built-in boning and corsets. Retail prices for the brand range from $1,000 to $4,000 for gowns, and $200 to $600 for event dresses. (higher than some dresses at The Limited or J. Crew.)

Look for the first brick & mortar to open its doors in the second half of the year. I'll be interested to see the quality of the dresses.  They ain't cheaper, but they are cheaper than most off the rack wedding dresses from designers like Vera Wang or Monique Lhuillier.

Award Season & Special Event Dressing on a Budget

With the build up to the Oscars this week, many of us are getting ready for viewing parties at home or with friends.  Just in time, Rent the Runway is introducing a nice selection of adorable dresses for rent from designers Trina Turk, Parker and Yumi Kim for just $40.00.  I love both Trina Turk and Parker with their colorful prints.  And to get to try one of their designs for a mere $40.00 is a great deal.   Parker is always so elegant looking, and I like their vintage styles.  The line is still difficult to find in boutiques, so Rent the Runway is a great way to explore this designer at a low prices.  Click here to read my earlier review of Rent the Runway.

Services like Rent the Runway help to make  fashion accessible to the mass market.  If you want to check it out, click here to join the website and browse the goods. You can also join using my referral link.   If you use my link, I receive a referral fee when you rent, and you can also refer your friends and receive a credit to bring the cost of your rental down.  Discount shopping and credits are some of my favorite recessionista tools. :)

Another  low priced options for dressing up are the new Kinder Aggugini collection at Macy's.  I saw Kinder's show from  London Fashion Week, and the Macy's collection is true to his design aesthetic and very good looking.  The draping of the dresses is very attractive and comfortable too.   I'm be writing a review of the entire collection soon,  Have any of you seen it in the store? What do you think?

I'll be a the party this Friday at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills to see for myself what QVC has on offer.  One thing I hope to see is the Jacqueline Kennedy jewelry collection.  “Gossip Girl” actress Kelly Rutherford will debut her luxury handbag line during the Saturday broadcast.

The 13th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards Honor Costumes in Film

Pictured: The program cover from the Costume Designers Guild Award  (photo : M.Hall from the program )
Tonight the 13th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGA) were announced at a star-studded gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  The event featured stunning fashions, A-list stars (Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, Demi Moore)  but was surprisingly informal and fun. The very charming and extremely approachable Kristin Davis hosted the awards with all the good manners and niceties that her character Charlotte York from Sex and the City is known for. At one point she reminded the audience how refreshing it was to hear the  Costume Designers accept their awards in their own words and with heartfelt emotion.  After all, the awards honor talented designers who work behind the camera, and don't usually get to step out front.  In the film industry , Costume Design is such an important and often overlooked field.  Costumes help to define a character and inform an actor's portrayal.  Stressing the importance of costumes in film, honoree Joel Schumacher noted, "Where would Marilyn be without the white dress, Indiana Jones without the hat, Tom Cruise without his tidy whities or Scarlett without the drapes?"  "Clothing, even a house dress, becomes part of the character," noted Mr. Schumacher who started his career as a costume designer and later became an award winning writer and director.  Mr. Schumacher received the Distinguished Collaborator Award from Bill Maher.

The following talented Costume Designers were honored in these categories:

Outstanding contemporary television series
GleeLou Eyrich

Outstanding period/fantasy television series

Outstanding made for television movie or mini series
Temple GrandinCindy Evans

Excellence in commercial costume design

Five honorary awards were  also presented at the Awards Gala. This year, the Guild honored Halle Berry, Academy Award-winning actress and Golden Globe nominee for her film Frankie and Alice, with the newly titled Lacoste Spotlight Award.   Berry was presented the award by Samuel L. Jackson.  Two-time Oscar nominee and multiple Emmy winning costume designer Julie Weiss was given the Disaronno Career Achievement Award in Film and Television Award.  A montage highlighting her extraordinary career was introduced by designer favorites Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. The award itself was presented by Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thornton and Diane Lane. After the tributes and funny stories about Ms. Weiss ended, she took the stage and offered some of the best advice of the evening to attendees and members of the Guild.   "Don't worry about the budget," Ms. Weiss told the crowd. "You can't budget the imagination."  She noted that the magical moment for her in the costume design process is when the actor puts on the costumes and "becomes the character."

Pictured: Halle Berry modestly bowing her head before accepting her award. (Photo M. Hall)

It will be interesting to see if  how many of the designers move forward to win Oscars this Sunday at the Academy Awards.  Typically, the  CDGAs are a good predictor of the Oscar race.  As for fashion, Halle Berry looked beautiful in a red Ellie Saab gown and Kristin Davis wore a strapless white Oscar de la Renta gown with polka dots. Ginnifer Goodwin from HBO's Big Love also looked great on the Red Carpet, and I caught her right before the awards started.

Stay tuned for Sunday's Oscars for more award winners in the field of costume design for film. I'm hoping The King's Speech can maintain its winning streak.

London Fashion Week: Burberry Fall 2011 Show Homage to Jean Shrimpton

Pictured: Jean Shrimpton in an evening dress photo by John French (1907-66), for London Town © Victoria and Albert Museum / V&A Prints

Some of my readers my be too young to remember 1960s British Supermodel, Jean Shrimpton.  The "Shrimp" as she was called was one of the first to popularize the miniskirt in the swinging '60s. Jean was one of the first to bare her mid-driff, and she also had a little recessionista soul.  She once modeled and (allegedly) selected "Free and Easy Fashions for You to Knit" by Wendy Courtelle Knits.  I'm certain my mother owned several of those knitting pattern books. Jean claimed to never love fashion, and retired from modeling to run/manage the Abbey Hotel in Penzance, Cornwall.   She always claimed her wearing the miniskirt was a mistake, that it was simply a lack of  fabric that bought the whole thing about.  "The fabric company who sent me the material for the dress never sent me enough material," she explained. "I said, `Nobody's going to take any notice so just make the skirt a bit shorter -- it was as simple as that. Then it caused this huge furor, which was really rather surprising."

Pictured: Shades of Shrimpton at London Fashion Week today on the Burberry runway.  I could see the leggy Shrimp in this blue Burberry dress, sans newsboy camp. (photo. M. Hall via the Internet livestream.)
Flash forward 46 years, and the lovely former Vogue model is still inspiring fashion.   Burberry Creative Officer Christopher Bailey showed Burberry's collection at London Fashion Week today and titled his collection "Shrimpton" for Jean. I could see Jean's style in the crisp, clean lines of some of the dresses and coats shown today. Jean was also known to wear fur and there were many fur accents and even dalmatian spotted newsboy caps on the runway.  Bailey's other inspiration was the Burberry brands strong military heritage, particularly the coats. Burberry made military coats in World War I , giving new meaning to the term "trench coat." Today, there were plenty of gorgeous fall/winter coats on the runway for both men and women in updated, trendy styles.

Pictured:  Burberry's updated military style on the London runway.  (photo. M. Hall via the Internet livestream.)

There were plenty of English tweeds, Burberry's trademark double faced heritage gabardine and even lightweight cable knit wool silk jacquard. The updated military coat styles had details like woven leather buttons and unique leather luggage duffle fastenings (see the fastenings on the coat above.)  The collection colors were deep and rich dark tints of mustard seed, camel, honey, dark clove brown, dark amber, bright caper, dark caper, juniper, bright teal blue, primary red, raspberry, tangerine, white and of course black.  It was almost a perfect show, if only, yes if only those dalmation spotted fur newsboy caps had not been everywhere.  Sorry, I just didn't like those--they didn't add to the overlook in my humble opinion.  The staging for the show was completely brilliant with a rush of snow falling at the end, while Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" played and Christopher Bailey took his final bow.  Even more brilliant was the fact that the show was streamed live around the world on multiple websites in Piccadilly Circus and via over 40 global event at Burberry store venues.  It really was the People's Fashion Show.

I'll be looking for the collection at discounters like the Outnet.com, Gilt Groupe and even the Burberry store sales.  Look for discounted Burberry now at the Bloomingdales Big Brown Bag sale.  And remember, Burberry now has outlet stores.  I wonder if Jean Shrimpton ever shops there ? :)

Feb. 21st: Watch the Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2011 from London Fashion Week

Experience London Fashion Week via The Recessionista. I'm streaming the  Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2011 Runway show right here on on Monday, Feb. 21st courtesy of the fabulous fashion forward folks at Burberry Prorsum .  For those of you who studied Latin in school, you know that Prorsum is Latin for "forwards."   Many of my English relatives (and some Americans too) were forced to take this ancient language in school and it serves them well in understanding these important Latin words that are now related to fashion events. :) So forward we go to London Fashion Week. Right now, if you're traveling to the UK, the weakness of the British Pound brings you a better deal on Burberry or other English designers. I buy a bit of Burberry, pre-owned, on sale, at the outlet or via eBay. There's always a way to find the best for less.

Now to see the Burberry show, here are the show times for Monday., Feb. 21st as follows:

  • 4:00 pm London, England; 4:00 pm Dublin, Ireland
  • 5:00 pm Paris , France
  • 11:00 am New York, NY EST
  • 8:00 am Los Angeles,CA PST
  • 10:00 am Dallas, TX CST
  • 1:00 am, Melbourne, Australia
Wherever you are in the world, you can enjoy the show, and join the conversations on Twitter from @Burberry or using the hashtag #LFW. Simply click on the arrow on the player to watch the show. Enjoy! They always have the best runway music. I can't wait to hear what "CB" chooses to play.  I loved the use of the song "White Lions" by The Maccabees and Rose" by The Feeling in previous shows.

From Across the Pond: London Fashion Week Goes Online featuring Burberry

Since the economic downturn  began (say 2008), my beloved trips across the pond to the UK have been sadly curtailed.  I miss my annual jaunts to London, Edinburgh, and Dublin more than I can say.  The only thing that provides solace is the Internet, which now allows me to view London Fashion Week online from my front row seat in Los Angeles.  That means you can also watch some of Britain's best designers' runway shows with a good Internet connection.  To see the entire schedule of shows, simply go to www.londonfashionweek.co.uk/digitalschedule.  Remember to use World Clock on the Internet to put the UK show times into your local time. The website will also feature videos made by members of the fashion community.
Pictured: Burberry's upcoming show will be shown on the big screen in Piccadilly Circus on Feb. 21st .  (photo courtesy of Burberry.)
I'm especially excited to see this year's Burberry show online.  Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer, is online and has taken over the Burberry Twitter account.  The socially savvy Mr. Bailey  is tweeting "in the build up" to the Burberry Prorsum show. I'm really enjoying his Tweets on all the preparations leading up to the show, selecting music, fitting, etc.  The Spring show featured the great song Rose by band The Feeling, so I wonder how Christopher will top that? In the Burberry productions, it seems like the songs where almost written specifically for the shows--that's how seamlessly they seem to mesh.   I'm glued to Twitter for clues on the  musical selection, as "CB" tweeted that he is already listening to Squeeze and the Kinks.  Save the date, the Burberry Prorsum Womenswear Autumn Winter 2011 show will take place on Monday February, 21 at 4PM UK time, 8: am PST (Los Angeles), 11:00 am EST (New York) and 10:00 am CST (Dallas).

This year Burberry will be streaming its Prorsum Womenswear Autumn Winter 2011 show from a new venue in London, Royal Park of Kensington Gardens,  to over 150 countries online and at 40 live events. The 40th venue, London's iconic Piccadilly Circus (the Times Square of London), will stream the show live onto the famous 32 metre digital screen which is viewed by an estimated 1.2 million people every week – a first for any brand. Prediction, this may stop traffic in Piccadilly or at least turn a few heads.  As part of the 40 live events, the show will be streamed globally in Burberry flagship stores from Boston to Beijing , creating ‘buy from the runway’ in-store virtual trunk show events across 4 continents.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the Burberry show to our widest audience yet in an immersive, interactive and entertaining experience. We have always used digital communication to deepen our connection with the customer and allow people all over the world to experience Burberry no matter where they are.", says Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer." Whether you are at home online, watching in Piccadilly Circus, using a mobile device or in our store in Beijing everyone will be able to feel the energy and attitude of the brand and the excitement of the show.”

That's what we love over here at The Recessionista, that everyone can feel the energy and excitement of the show, the elitism of jostling for a sit or invitation to a Burberry show has ended.  Viva the Internet!  Now if , only Mr. Bailey could beam a swag bag over, I think he'd be a perfect being. :)

NYFW: Milly Presents Vivid Colors for Fall 2011

Pictured: The traditional  navy outfit that kicked off the Milly Fall 2011 gave no hit of the colors to follow. (photo Getty images.)
Last week Milly (designer Michelle Smith) produced a surprisingly colorful collection for Fall 2011.  The show open with a model walking out in the classic above navy blue ensemble.  I thought that first look would set the tone for a traditional dark-hued Fall collection, but I was very wrong.  After the parade of the first few looks, everything changed.   The Lincoln Center runway was fully lit with purples greens, navys, pinks reds, melons, salmons, terracottas, browns, yellow, some plaids and even some of Milly's distinctive prints.

Pictured: Milly's color palette was striking, but more spring than traditional Fall. (photo Getty images.)
According to Ms. Smith her inspiration for this collection was French photographer Guy Bourdin.  Bourdin's photos appeared in French Vogue and ads for Charles Jordon.  Bourdin didn't play it safe with his photos, using color and sex to make a fashion statement.  Sometimes his photos were considered shocking and you could say that about some of the Milly Fall 2011 pieces.  They were beautiful, but almost blindingly brilliant with reds layered with corals and pinks.    Even more shocking were  the deep greens paired with purples.

Pictured: Who knew green, coral and purple could mix so well? Michelle Smith.  (photo Getty images.)
Beyond the influence of Guy Bourdin, I saw flashes of art collector and fashion eccentric Peggy Guggenheim in the big glasses and a poppy print dress on a solid black background. (Peggy was the influence for Milly's spring collection.) I adore Milly's French sense of style and impeccable tailoring, but I'm not sure I would pair emerald green with purple for winter wear.   I'd be more inclined to go with her cream ensemble and accent it with some bright blue gloves or stylish colored tights to lighten things up.

Pictured: A more traditional Milly winter white ensemble.  (photo Getty images.)

It wasn't all about color at Milly. There were more sedate pieces in the Milly Fall 2011 collection.  There were brown coats and corduroy culottes shown with boots, along with black cocktail dresses. For fabrics, there were plenty of tweeds, mohairs and suedes as befits colder temperatures. I liked this Fall collection from Milly, but some of the neon bright colors won't be for everyone. They looked brilliant on the runway, layered on tall slender models wearing them like a peacock wears its plums. Will they look like that on women of all shapes and sizes? Or petite women?  I think it's reasonable to expect that not every woman will want to match the Milly Fall 2011 separates as they were shown on the runway at New York Fashion Week.   I'll be interested to see the pieces on sale at Nordstroms and Bloomingdales, where Milly can always be found.  And of course, I'll be shopping with a coupon or at the sale.

The Recessionista Reviews Irina Shabayeva's INC Spring 2011 Collection at Macy's

Pictured: Irina Shabayeva for INC Silk Chiffon Ruffle Dress, Use Code: PRESIDENT at Macy's.com to save 10% on this dress

Project Runway season six winning designer Irina Shabayeva's INC collection arrives in Macy's store today. Look for it in the INC collection, as a standalone display. I stopped by my local Macy's to check out the collection. As promised, the collection was full of Shabayeva's trademark form fitting dresses and separates, notably tops, skirts, jackets and even denim.  In addition to garments, Irina for INC offers plenty of footwear, mainly very high (5 inch) heel sandals, with ankle ties. They are pretty, but may be difficult to walk in, at least for me!   Most of the collection is priced at under $100.00. But here's a warning, wear your Spanx or supporting foundation garments to the store when you try on Irina's collection so you can see how it might  look best on you.  These are not loose-fitting garments.  The Irina for INC. dresses will hug every curve and they are rather unforgiving.  Having said that, they are well done.  I really liked the Cap Sleeve Rhinestone Bandage Dress and the Cap Sleeve Beaded Neck Keyhole Back Tee. The rhinestone dress is gorgeous and for $129.00 its well priced because of the embellishments and design on the front. It almost looks like exploding fireworks.  To me, the beaded keyhole tee is more practical, and something I could get more wear out of.
Pictured: The collection's show stopper, the Rhinestone Bandage Dress

Most of the collection consists of form fitting "bandage" dresses like those popularized by Hervé Léger and frequently seen on the red carpet.  It will be interesting to see if the average Macy's shopper is comfortable with the bandage style which emphasizes the female shape.  The versatile short Dolman Sleeve Textural Cropped Anorak Jacket with the tie at the waist, priced at $119.00)  is a more traditional choice for Macy's shoppers. This neutral jacket will go with everything and it's perfect for the office or for going out. Some of the collection, like the yellow ruffled chiffon dress pictured above, and the silk baby doll dress, are on sale this weekend with coupon code PRESIDENT via Macys.com for President's Day.  Check online to see which pieces are discounted for President's Day.

Overall, I like Irina's collection, but I wish she hadn't done so many (total of 8) "bandage" dresses.  How about just 1 good work dress, that doesn't scream SEXY?  Usually a collection is a little more varied and has an assortment of styles.  I can just hear the voice of Nina Garcia looking at this and asking, "Why didn't you show us something more than a group of Hervé Léger like Bandage dresses?"  And then you know Tim Gunn would have to chime in "Don't bore Nina!"

I saw Irina's NYFW Fall 2010 collection and her recent designs from her Fall 2011 collection.  She has more more talent and versatility than this INC collection indicates.  To me, this is just a glimpse of Irina, not the full on designer.

Just Say No: Fanny Packs on the Runway at New York Fashion Week

Pictured: Marc Jacobs' version of the "fanny pack" at NYFW 2011 (photo: Getty Images)
Remember the "fanny pack"? It was a bulky pouch you wore around your midsection when you went traveling in Europe and walked 5 miles everyday.  You had to have a place to store your passport and travel supplies, right?  It seemed right at the time, er maybe 10 years ago, but the functional pouches were hardly attractive.  Until this week, I thought they had died a quiet fashion death.

Wrong.  Fanny packs made an unseemly appearance at New York Fashion Week this week, as a new rebranded "hands free pack." WTF.  I spotted them at Jill Stuart, and even, gasp Marc Jacobs.   I just don't get it. This is a not a piece designed for every day wear.  And why show it at a time when everyone is on their New Year's diet? You can say that this accessory is slimming, far from it, it add at least another 5 lbs.  And right up front too.  I'm saving my cash.  I don't care whose name is on this one.  This is one piece from Fashion Week that am not buying. How about your readers? Are you dying to get on the wait list for a Hermes "hands free pack." :) Please tell me that is not next!

2011 Fashion 2.0 Awards Celebrate The Best In Fashion, Tech and Social Media

Pictured: DKNY PR and Social Media Members at the awards.
Last night in New York City, Style Coalition ( a collective of top Fashion Bloggers, including moi) , in partnership with online shopping site TheFind, hosted the Second Annual Fashion 2.0 Awards at the Trump Hotel Soho NYC. Style Coalition is a leading network of more than 60 top independent online publishers and bloggers in the fashion, beauty and lifestyle vertical. Since 2010 Style Coalition has been the official social media partner of ELLE magazine and HFMUS.

Over 300 fashion innovators and top brands such as Bergdorf Goodman, Chanel, Bluefly and DKNY were in attendance while thousands more watched as the event was livestreamed across the world via ICED Media. That is quite an achievement for an awards event only in it's second year.  The event is significant as it shows how the fashion world is embracing Social Media. The awards celebrated the best innovators and users of technology and social media among the fashion brands and were nominated by open ballot via a community of their peers and fans.  It was no surprise to me that DKNY walked off with four awards. Their Twitter feed alone is fantastic, and shows the power of a brand dialoguing with customers, buyers and press via Social Media.  The voice of the DKNY PR Girl is distinctive, humorous  and most of all completely engaging. The secret of DKNY on Twitter is that the brand has conversations with others on Twitter, rather than just sending out  links to press releases or pictures of celebrities wearing their clothes. This is the way to use Twitter best, as an interactive tool. However, there were other winners last night besides the fabulous DKNY team.  Here's a full list of the winners by category:

  • Best Online Video: Bluefly Closet Confessions, Presented by: Felicia Walker Benson (ThisThatBeauty) and Sydne Summer (ThinkThruFashion)
  • Best Twitter: @DKNY, Presented by: Sarah Conley (StyleIt) and Kristin Booker (FashionStyleBeauty)
  • Best Facebook Page: Levi's,Presented by: Lauren Dimet Waters (SecondCityStyle) and Kat Griffin (Corporette)
  • Best Mobile App: DKNY Cozy, Presented by: Jordana Bruner (Clutch22)
  • Best Blog: DKNY Times,Presented by: Gala (GalaDarling)
  • Best Website: Armani Jeans "The Room" , Presented by: Jennifer Davidson and Beth Herbst (StyleBakery)
  • Next Big Thing in Tech: Tumblr, Presented by: Michelle Madhok (SheFinds) and Dina Fierro (Eye4style)
  • Top Innovator: DKNY , Presented by TheFind Team
Congrats to all the winners. Personally, I am surprised Burberry didn't take home a few awards, as I think they have an amazing social media presence via their Facebook page and websites. It was very innovative when Burberry head Christopher Bailey took over the @Burberry Twitter account during London Fashion Week. I also think Bergdorf Goodman has a wicked good Twitter feed.  I'm still waiting for Chanel to get Twitterific, they seem to only focus on Facebook, which I do think is a missed opportunity for them.  Lady Amanda, please expand your Twitter Chanel :)

What do you think readers?  Are there other Designers/Brands using Social Media that you think are doing a great job communicating with their customers who didn't get an award last night?  Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Target's Best of Go Designers Dresses in stores March 13

Pictured: One of my Go favs: Behnaz Sarafpour Lace Tiered Dress.
Target has released images of their soon to be in stores collection of reissued dresses from the Go line. Ranging in price from $24.99 to $44.99, the GO International Designer Collective will be available March 13 through April 10, 2011 at most Target stores and Target.com.  If case you missed some of these the first time, the collection features dresses from Luella Bartley, Tara Jarmon, Paul & Joe (by Sophie Albou), Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler (by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez), Libertine (by Johnson Hartig), Alice Temperley, Erin Fetherston, Jovovich-Hawk (by Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk), Rogan (by Rogan Gregory), Richard Chai, Jonathan Saunders, Thakoon (by Thakoon Panichgul), Tracy Feith, Rodarte (by Laura and Kate Mulleavy), Zac Posen and Tucker (by Gaby Basora).

Pictured: This Jovovich-Hawk dress will be back on the Target racks March

The collection features some hits and misses in my opinion. Target is reissuing several Zac Posen dresses, which while they were very cute, had real "zipper problems." I was in the fitting room with women who couldn't get them zipped or unzipped, so hopefully Zac's designs are better executed this time around.  There will be three dresses offered from the top selling GO  Jovovich-Hawk collection, which may be the last time buyers can pick up new Jovovich-Hawk since the line is now longer in production. What pieces will you be looking for this time? With New York Fashion week still in high gear until the end of this week, it's very smart of Target to prepare lower priced designer offerings to be on store shelves in March, just a few weeks after the designer collections appeared on New York runways.

Betsey Johnson Puts Her Store Employees, Not Just Models, on the Runway for NYFW Fall 2011

Pictured: Two sides of Betsey Johnson at NYFW: the Black Tag line  on left, and the Pink Patch line on right, plus Betsey's new Steve Madden Lizzzy-L booties (photo courtesy of Steve Madden.)
Betsey Johnson's eccentric style was in full force today at New York Fashion Week with her playful and sometimes over the top runway show. Think 1920s silent star Louise Brooks on acid, and that's a bit how Betsey Johnson's models looked in either their black or blonde blunt, bob styled wigs.  The styles ran the gamut from whimsical prints and flowery hippy chick dresses to loud animal prints, and poppy fabric flowers worn on one shoulder.  Betsey showed two lines today at NYFW, a higher priced line called her "Black Tag" line (worn by the models in the black wigs) and her new lower priced recessionsta style "Pink Patch " line (worn by the models in the blonde wigs.)  I'm not sure about the looks from the "Black Tag" line.  These are for a woman who has a strong sense of individuality and who wants to be noticed.  You won't get lost in the crowd in Betsey's "Black Tag" Purple Rain type lacy leggings and tutu like skirts.  Of course, there were still plenty of the designer's  Boho chic dresses in floral prints which are her trademark.  They look as great today as they did on Stevie Nicks back in the day.

Pictured: My favorite piece from Betsey Johnson's Black Tag line at NYFW (photo: M. Hall)

But my favorite thing about Betsey's show today was how she showed her new "Pink Patch" collection. Midway through the show, the Pink Patch models came out in blond wings.  The whole tone of the show changed. They were not professional models, clearly, as they were not 5'8 and reed thin.  There were women of every shape and size, and every ethnicity looking beautiful on the runway and looking like they were having fun. Now that's something you don't often see at New York Fashion Week.

Pictured: One of Betsey Johnson's employees models a Pink Patch Ensemble. (photo credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)
Rarer than a Loch Ness Monster sighting is a collection of smiling, curvy models on the runway at New York Fashion Week. But there they were, the Pink Patch models made up of  employees from Betsey Johnson's stores and showroom in all shapes and sizes. Bravo Betsey!  I thought it was great to see how the clothes drape and move on women with curves and even a pregnant woman. The designer's show notes called Pink Patch "affordable, accessible and true-blue Betsey."  I agree, I liked Pink Patch line better than Black Tag line  and not just because it is priced under $100.00.  I liked the vivid colors, the bright flowers and cute dresses.  The models were also wearing the new Steve Madden/Betsey Johnson Lizzie L-Booties (priced at approximately $250.00 US)  in prints and solids that matched their garments.  I also liked the bright Pink Patch tote bags in bright Betsey florals.

Pictured: Betsey Johnson's unique Valentine from her Facebook page.
Betsey to use your own show Valentines' tag line, "I F'ing Love You"  for putting real women on the runway in affordable fashion. I may not be bold enough to wear all those colors and styles, but I think it is great and yes, innovative, that you let consumers and buyers see how the clothes might look on the average women. Seeing those women on the runway made me almost want to do a Betsey cartwheel! :)

Grammy Style: Kelly Osbourne and Norah Jones Looked Smashing

Pictured: Kelly Osbourne at the Grammys. (Photo credit: Adriana M. Barraza)

If you watched the Grammy Awards tonight, then you know that there were not a lot of fashion winners at the awards.  In general the Grammys are not know for great style, but there were a few standouts.  Let's start with Kelly Osbourne.  She looked amazing in a lavender Tadashi Shoji cocktail dress. Kelly has blossomed into a beautiful blonde and I love her style transformation.  Her dress was made of  crinkled silk chiffon hand cut floral one shoulder dress with ribbon waist from Tadashi Shoji's Spring 2011 Collection.   Other fashion highlights of the evening including Norah Jones sporting a Louise Brooks type bob and an Audrey Hepburnesque one shoulder black dress by Theia Couture with full  "puff" skirt. Martina McBride looked elegant in an elegant midnight blue Catherine Malandrino gown. The guys from British Band Mumford & Sons looked fantastic in Burberry.
Pictured: Jolene never looked this good.  Norah Jones in Theia Couture at the Grammys.
More noticeable than the handful of tasteful gowns and dresses, were the fashion atrocities.  Cee-Lo appeared as cross between the 1970s attired Elton John and Big Bird of Sesame Street. Lady Gaga modeled a strange set of pointed shoulders that I was informed were actually supposed to be flesh colored horns. Finally, there was Mick Jagger channeling the Blue Brothers. He sounded great and proved he was still "Jump'in Jack Flash." But I don't know what he was wearing. Many folks on Twitter speculated that his fashion choice may have been Gap kids. If it was, it was Stella McCartney for Gap kids. Bottom line, the Grammys is about music, not fashion. It's not New York Fashion Week, but a great concert with a few awards sprinkled in.

Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Ideas: Fred Segal and More

Pictured: An assortment of Valentine's Day Gifts at Fred Segal attractions (photo: M. Hall)
According to a study from CNN news, 60% of men will buy gifts for Valentine's Day, and 50% of women will buy gifts.  And for many, Valentines Day is the great last minute gift buy as traditional gifts like chocolates and flowers may be fresher if bought close to the actual moment of giving. But, if you're looking for something more than flowers or candy, and you are in Los Angeles, you might want to check out the selection of Valentine's goodies at Fred Segal's Originals shop. Fred Segal Originals is offering some great items for Valentine's Day, like "Love" labeled scarves and wraps, T-shirts, books and more for under $50.00 US. Fred Segal Originals is the new line launched by Fred Segal's daughter Annie.  Besides comfy Tees made in Los Angeles, there are rock star like metallic spandex leggings, jersey dresses and wraps and “Offons,” the elastic-waist pants Fred invented in the 1970s  that are easy on  and off, with a slim, but not too tight fit in jersey, twill, satin, silk and more.  There is also a charming baseball jacket priced at $80.00 based on an original design from the early days of Fred Segal.  For Valentines day, it makes a great topper in red satin.

If Los Angeles is too far to travel to do your Valentine's gift shopping, then check out these ideas from stores that maybe closer.

  • T.J. Maxx or Marshalls:  Great selection of special jewelry and even chocolates and amazing raspberry cookies in heart shaped tins.
  • Kohl's: Gifts for everyone in the whole family including jewelry, accessories and Vera Wang jewelry and lingerie.
  • Godiva: They have some good deals on boxes of chocolate and even delicious fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate.

And finally, remember the best gift you can give may just be a simple homemade Valentine or special love letter.  I'm always fascinated by the love letters that Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett.  He wrote them on simple , plain stationary in black ink, with liberal sprinklings of ink drops.  But he won her heart with only his words, not luxury gifts.

Pictured: A letter from Robert Browning to Elizabeth Barrett
Pictured above is an the actual letter poet Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett. He wrote, " I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett, -- and this is no off-hand complimentary letter." He touched her heart and won her love with nothing more than his words, some paper, ink and a nominally priced postage stamp. Now that's priceless.

NYFW: "Something New York" DKNY Fall 2011

Pictured: The final walk at the DKNY Fall 2011 show today
(photo: M.Hall)
I always look forward to the DKNY show at New York Fashion Week.  Don't laugh, but I really think of DKNY as the Super Bowl of New York Fashion Week. That's because I know that these are pieces I am going to really going to wear and buy.  DKNY is not an aspirational fashion show for me, it's real. The price point is always within my budget, while many other New York Fashion Week shows are not.  But it's not just an attractive price point that keep me buying DKNY.  I've been wearing Donna Karan DKNY for years because her clothing is very comfortable, and her pants are just the best.   Seriously, it's almost like  the designer came to my house and took all my measurements, then went back to her studio and designed just for me.  Her cut is the most wonderful slimming solution I have found. Her show today was entitled, "Something New York." The title was the backdrop for the runway show and could be seen on a large neon sign backdrop. Clearly, Ms. Karan's big love for the big apple continues.  And so does my big love for DKNY.  That's doesn't mean that I would buy every piece of the collection, but overall, there are a lot of winners here to consider.

Pictured: One of may favorites from DKNY 2011 Black Shearling Wool Coat with a Persian Lamb look layered over Georgette top w/cream collar. and min-skirt.  (photo credit: Peter Michael Dills/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)
There were a couple of show highlights today that I really liked and look forward to seeing at retailers like Macy's and Bloomingdales. There were some exquisite coats, one in particular, a long black Persian Lamb number, that  I am lusting for.  More simple Fall wear like cardigans and capes were shown in rich oranges, lipsticks, reds and raspberrys.  I would say that raspberry met pink today at DKNY and fell in love with her.

Pictured: Lipstick colored short coats and cherry/raspberry stripes debuted at DKNY Fall 2011 today.
(Photo: M. Hall)
I felt like I saw a new version of a black mini-dress with a simple cream Peter Pan collar like Mia Farrow wore in Rosemary's Baby.  There were a couple variations on this 1960s retro Mia look, a long sleeved dress with cream collar, a sleeveless dress with collar, and a sheer black top with a cream collar.  I believe all the collars on the DKNY looks were detachable, which makes the garments versatile.  You could have a simple little black dress, or a mod 1960s look with the collar.

Pictured: DKNY's Black Dress with Cream Collar (top) reminded me of Mia Farrow's 1960s look (bottom)
(photo: DKNY dress from DKNY PR Girl via Twitter, Mia picture from vintage Life Magazine.)
Also in evidence were lots of layered looks for Fall, like ribbed knits under short jackets and coats plus oversized cardigans over dresses. There were also a few plaids. There were some plaid red and black short jackets.  But there were also plaids used to accent jackets around the trim and collar.  I have to say, I am not mad about plaid, and that was my least favorite part of the collection. I also wasn't wild about the horizontal strips on the sweaters, as this is not a look that will work for all women.

But overall, DKNY produced another winning collection that I think will be well-received by consumers and buyers.  The layers and practical fabrics are designed to provide warmth to help budget savvy fashionistas survive the fall chill, while still looking fabulous, which is a winning combination whether you are in New York or the rest of the world.
