SpaWeek is Coming April 11-17th with $50 Spa Treatments

In case you haven't heard, Spa Week is coming April 11th to 17th! Spa Week is a week when some spas are making $50.00 treatments available to customers. That is a nice savings on a facial, masssage or other treatment. PTL (praise the lord) I say.  Every year, I seem to learn about SpaWeek too late to get an appointment at some of my preferred spa spots in Los Angeles.  This year, I'm planning early and book everything about 2 weeks in advance this year.  I'm going for a facial that usually costs $225.00 for $50.00.  Ka-ching, feel the spa savings coming on!
Spa Week arrives just in time for the payment of property taxes, state taxes and federal income taxes. All due that week. All dreadful and stressful. I definitely need to check in somewhere and try to relax and forget the taxman. If you are interested in taking advantage of discounted spa rates, check the Spaweek.com website to find out where the deals are near you. Deals are offered in the US, Canada and worldwide. Just check the website to find out where. To get busy with the spa savings, click here to check all the spa deals, giveaways, offers for brides and more.

If you'd rather spa at home, check out this deal from Sonya Dakar Spa in Beverly Hills.  Order their NutraSphere Flash Facial (an exfoliating gel) on sale for $50.00 reduced from $95.00 using the code: PEOPLE during checkout at sonyadakarskinclinic.com
If you know of any good SpaWeek deals, please leave a comment here and share.  Here's an extra tip, you can save 10% on  Spa Week Gift Cards if you purchase now  by clicking here.  Note, in the interest of full disclosure, I want you to know that I receive  a small referral fee if you purchase a gift card for Spa Week from this post.

Made for Pearl? Janis Joplin clothing line

Pictured: Janis Joplin at Monterey Pop Festival  in gold Colin Rose
One of the more interesting rumors to have a caught my attention in recent months is that there may be a Janis Joplin clothing line coming to market sanctioned by her estate.  Have any of you heard about this? In late 2010, The New York Times confirmed the rumor as fact in a story about Janis's estate.   According to the article,  Jeffrey Jampol, of  Jampol Artist Management in Los Angeles,  is developing a plan to bring Janis Joplin fashions to market "working closely with the Joplins, he has sketched a one- to three-year business plan that includes Made for Pearl, a Joplin-inspired line of jewelry, accessories and clothing based on items worn by the singer."

Would you buy Janis inspired fashions readers? Well, I would.  Not all of Janis's fashions mind you.  I don't think many of us can pull off the feather boas in the hair or purple satin bell bottom pants.  But some of what she wore was really beautiful.   She wore many of designer Colin Rose's garments from his boutique in San Francisco. Remember her gold tunic and pants at Monterey Pop?  She was dressed much better than anyone else at the hippie fest. It was her breakout part, and her stage attire played a role. Janis was savvy enough to know that she needed a distinctive look at the festival.  A few years ago one of Janis's other Colin Rose outfits, a purple mini-dress, sold at auction.   The dress looks just as fashionable today as it did in the 1960s, and would be a good addition to a Made for Pearl collection.

Pictured: One of Janis Joplin's Colin Rose dresses, auctioned several years ago for $14,000. (photo from Heritage Auctions)
Of course the collection should also feature her hippie peasant blouses, sequined blouses with puffed sleeves and maxi dresses. Some of those have also been sold at auction in recent years, and are styles we still see today.  Naturally, I think any collection of Janis fashions should be frugally priced.  Surprisingly, Janis was a very frugal shopper.  When she was starting her singing career, she bought clothing at Goodwill and even sewed some of her own clothes.  According to those who knew her best, Janis was famously frugal, meticulously balancing her checkbook and paying her bills herself even after she hit it big.  I wonder how many rock stars today are as hands on with their money as Janis was?

Pictured : A long dress owned by Janis Joplin with butterfly sleeves.
Here's hoping we hear more about the plan for the Made for Pearl  fashion line soon. If any one has any information on the development of a Janis Joplin fashion line, please leave a comment here on the blog. It's high time Janis was remembered for her style.

Gap's Love Japan, Lift Japan T-Shirts

Pictured: Malin Akerman in Gap Japan shirt . Photo Credit - StarTraks Photo

Swedish actress Malin Akerman (seen in the movie Watchman)  was sighted hiking in LA’s Griffin Park this week looking chic on the cheap in the new limited edition Gap Japan Relief T-Shirt.  I didn't realize until I saw Malin in this shirt with the big heart, and the words Japan on the heart, that the Gap had produced three special edition Japan Relief T-Shirts.  Not only is the Tee cute, but Gap is donating all profits from the sale of the Tees to GlobalGiving’s Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Relief Fund.  There's nothing better than a fashionable good cause!

Pictured: The three designs from Gap's Japan shirts

When you buy the t-shirt online or in one of a dozen Gap flagship stores, the profits are donated to Global Giving’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.    Right now, the Gap is having a 30% off savings sale for Spring,  so if you're interested in the shirt, use code GETGAP30 to save at checkout.   The Gap's spring sale is a great time to save on kids stuff or some new spring wardrobe items.

Catherine Malandrino Partners with LACOSTE for Spring

Pictured:  A piece from the new LACOSTE and Malandrino collection.
Sacré bleu.  Catherine Malandrino has partnered with French preppy brand LACOSTE   I wore a lot of LACOSTE in college and high school (known as IZOD then by many), and not much since then.  I don't think I am alone, and that's why the French brand with the distinctive alligator logo has hired the French designer.  But what is Ms. Malandrino going to do for LACOSTE in terms of fashion? After all, LACOSTE is really know for one distinctive item, the preppy polo shirt with the trademark green alligator.   Cute, but not exactly haute couture.

Pictured: The new LACOSTE and Malandrino Logo.
The casual French brand aims to become more fashionable with the new Catherine Malandrino for LACOSTE 12-piece collection for spring 2011, expected in stores in mid-April.  The line features separates including harem pants, dresses, wide-leg trousers, and miniskirts.  There's also a funny T-shirt stating that "The Crocodile Loves You"  in fashionable graffiti like script.    Look for price points from $165.00 up to $650.00! That's a lot of money for a LACOSTE piece in my humble opinion!  I wonder if the line will eventually be sold at the LACOSTE outlet stores. (There's an outlet in Solvang, CA in case you didn't know.)

Ms. Malandrino told Women's Wear Daily, “My most important role with LACOSTE is to open the door to the feminine world. Now I am relaying effortless, chic, everyday clothes that you don’t have to think about. All of the silhouettes can be eye-catching, whether it is a miniskirt or high-waisted pants.”

Pictured: My favorite piece from the LACOSTE and Malandrino collection.
I'll be interested to see these pieces in LACOSTE and Malandrino stores. I love Catherine Malandrino, and I usually buy her designs at sample sales, so I'm not sure about her LACOSTE collection and price points.

Premium Return Protection from American Express Allows Shoppers to Make Returns after 180 days

Last year American Express launched a new return service to allow shopper to return items in a longer time period than typically allowed by stores.  Some stores have very generous return policies, allowing returns for up to 90 days, which is plenty of time to find out if an item works and get it back to the store.  But sometimes smaller merchants only allow returns within 7 days, 14 days or 30 days.  It's always harder to me to keep track of the schedule for those types of returns.  Sometimes you can't make that short return window, or you don't find out that the item is a lemon until well after the return policy ends.

Premium Return Protection from American Express is designed to offer shoppers greater flexibility and fewer restrictions on the types of items that can be returned. This includes expanded return protection on clothing, jewelry and electronics as well as for new categories like watches, books and DVDs. It is available to all consumers – not just American Express Cardmembers – for an annual price of $49.99 and will cover purchases made in the United States with any credit, debit or charge card from any financial services company. It also covers purchases made with prepaid cards issued by American Express. Those who enroll in the service will be covered for up to $600 per item, with a maximum annual refund of $2,500. All items must be returned in like new condition.

In addition, Premium Return Protection covers the cost of return shipping, up to $20 per item, with an annual maximum refund of $100. This benefit is designed for consumers who enjoy online shopping but don’t have the option of seeing what they’re buying. Another advantage of the service is that it can be used to cover restocking fees, which can be as much as 25 percent of the cost of an item.

What do you think readers? Would you pay approximately $50.00 per year for a little extra return time of your shopping purchases?

Matthew Williamson's Macy's Impulse Collection Preview Now Online

Macy's has just posted the previews of the upcoming Mathew Williamson for Macy's Impulse collection online.  It's pretty impressive in my opinion, and you can see the entire collection at macys.com/impulse.  In best social media style, visitors to the Macy's website can click on the images to vote for their favorites.  I'm loving the vintage looking Boho-chic peasant blouses in chiffon prints, and the banded waist v-neck cocktail dresses in cool, almost impressionistic tones. There are also some great looking one shoulder dresses with jeweled embellishments. One of hottest trends this Spring is the maxi dress, and a maxi from the collection is prominently featured on the collection preview page.  There's nothing like a strong dose of Matthew Williamson color to wake you up from a dreary winter.  The maxie dresses remind of the 1960s creations that Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell created so beautifully.  They are lovely, and look very comfortable.  I hope the quality of the garments will be as good as the pictures.

Matthew Williamson was a great choice for a Spring designer for Macy's and I can't wait to see this in stores.  For more of what Matthew Williamson has been creating for Spring, Fashion News Live's post of the Matthew Williamson for Bulgari collection of handbags. They are striking!

Sunday Savvy: Ideeli's Spring Cleaning Sale

I've been working on trying to clean my house.  Seriously, with all the rain and bad weather here in California to say many of us have been housebound is an understatement.  There's only one problem with my trying to tackle cleaning duties.  Basically, I hate cleaning and all types of housework.  This has always been the case, but since I started blogging the cleaning situation at Casa The Recesssionista has become mission critical.  That's why I am so fascinated by Ideeli's spring cleaning sale.   I usually turn to Ideeli for fashion items and deals on designers, but today, my head is completely turned around by the assortment of cleaning gadgets they are offering.   So here's what is on sale today. They've got all manners of steamers, irons by Rowenta, Laura Ashley storage containers, Shark Vacuums and Steam Mops (with free shipping) and Leifheit ladders and appliances.  I'm going to try some of these out, and I'm sorry I already missed the Laura Ashley shoe bags as they are now sold out.

If you're thinking of doing a little spring cleaning and clearing out your closets, you might want to check out Ideeli today.  If you're not a member, click here to use my invitation to shop the sale.  In the interests of full disclosure, I do earn a small referral fee from Ideeli when you use my invite to shop.  However, that's not why I'm recommending you check out this sale.  It's a great sale, with some top of the line cleaning gadgets and if you are cleaning challenged as I am, it may just help you literally put your house in order.

Remembering Dame Elizabeth: Fashionable & Fashionably Late for her own Funeral

Pictured: No one made a slip look better than Elizabeth Taylor.
I'm sure most of you know that Dame Elizabeth Taylor died yesterday morning at Cedars-Sinai hospital here in Los Angeles. Tonight, she was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA.  In her lifetime Dame Elizabeth was know for being late. She kept film sets, directors and even her husbands waiting. Tonight, by her own design, she arrived 15 minutes late for her funeral.  Why disappoint everyone after 79 years of waiting for her? According to her publicist, Sally Morrison,  "She even wanted to be late to her own funeral." What an entrance.

Years ago, I visited Fox Studios (20th Century Fox) in Century City.   Someone working there told me the studio once occupied all of what is now Century City, including the land where the Westfield Mall now sits, the area where the hotels are and all the office space.  But after Elizabeth Taylor starred in Cleopatra and the studio spent a fortune in production, and then on its release and failure, the studio was forced to sell off much of the lot to real estate developers to pay their debts.  Clearly, Ms. Taylor was no recessionista.   She was the first actress in movies to be paid 1 million dollars for a film role.  She owned some of the worlds biggest pieces of bling, including the Krupp diamond, the Taj Mahal diamond, Mary Tudor's La Peregrina Pearl and Wallis Simpson's Prince of Wales Plumes Brooch.  But she was also a woman who had worked and supported others since the age of 12 years old.  She lived large, but she also worked for what she had.  About her diamonds, she said."You can’t cry on a diamond’s shoulder, and diamonds won’t keep you warm at night. But they’re sure fun when the sun shines.”

Pictured: Elizabeth Taylor in Chanel in the 1960s.

It has to be said, that while she had access to the best of everything including fashion, she was not always fashionable. When Edith Head dressed her in Hollywood, her clothes were "taylor" made to show off her best assets. Later, without the studio's help, her choices ran the gamut from Chanel to hot pants, from Dior couture to kaftans.  "I love to be casual and comfortable, but I also love the easy glamour of wearing jewelry all the time" said Elizabeth. Surprisingly,  some of her most remembered looks on film are very simple. Like the figure hugging slips she wore in Butterfield 8 and Cat on a Hat Tin Roof.   Or the white swimsuit she wore on the beach in Suddenly Last Summer.

Just as her fashion taste's ran the gamut, so did her taste in food.  She was famous for her love of Chasen's Chili and had it shipped to her in Rome when filming Cleopatra. Even in her seventies, she still liked to drop by the Abbey bar in West Hollywood, where you can literally eat in bed. While she dinned at some of the world's best restaurants, she also admitted to loving "Popeyes"  and southern fried chicken.  (Popeyes!--can you even imagine Elizabeth Taylor eating  there?)

But what I remember most about Elizabeth Taylor is her loyalty to her friends and her support of AID/HIV research at a time when no one wanted to be associated with this terrible disease. She campaigned tirelessly and even spoke at the UN urging the US and the world to do more for AIDs research. I really think that was her finest hour.  In February, she told Harper's Bazaar, that she was "never richer than when I have scored a big check to fight AIDS."

Pictured: Dame Elizabeth was on of my favorite social media voices via her Twitter account.

Despite being in her seventies, Elizabeth was an avid user of social media.  She admitted liking Twitter because it allowed her to communicate with her fans. I'll miss her wonderful Tweets from her Dame Elizabeth Twitter ID.  It was clearly her authentic voice coming through the Twitter channel, although I always wondered if she personally typed it in.  It was clear from her last few Twitter messages that Ms. Taylor was thinking of moving on and reflecting on her life. Her messages became very philosophical.  Although she was no recessionista, she had some wonderful words on living within your means.  "Never let yourself think beyond your means...mental, emotional or any otherwise,"  Dame Elizabeth Tweeted on July 22nd, 2010.   Excellent advice from someone who lived well, and enjoyed the finer things as well as some fairly simple ones. Her husbands included famous actors, millionaires, a Republican Senator and finally a construction worker.

RIP Dame Elizabeth.  You will be missed.

The Tory Burch Japan Relief T-shirt: Help out with Style and a Comment

Every time I turn on the news this week, I am haunted by the coverage of the earthquake, Tsunami (which sent a few waves over to my California coast town)  and nuclear disasters in Japan.  The damage and loss is horrific.  I've already made a donation to the Red Cross to help out.  I'm sure some of you have also made donations and are keeping the people of Japan in your prayers. I think all of us are heart sick for the Japanese people and looking for ways to help, just as many of us helped the people of Haiti last year.

That's why I wanted to let you know that designer Tory Burch has partnered with online shopping club RueLaLa to design and sell a stylish T-shirt for earthquake relief.  The T-shirt is $29.00 US and 100% of the profits will benefit Japan Earthquake relief via the American Red Cross. If you are not a member of RueLaLa, click here to join using my invite.  That why you can shop the T-shirt sale on RueLaLa.  Note, in the interests of full disclosure, I do make a small referral fee when you shop on RueLaLa using my invite.  And you will also receive a referral fee when you join and refer friends who shop.  It's a good way for everyone to save.

I have already ordered a Tee (pictured above). I love the melding of the red Japanese national flag with the red hearts on the shirt. Tory Burch first posted the graphic to the her blog with a message of support to those affected by the disaster. The positive response from fans and readers was immediate. This response is what inspired the company to turn the design into a T-shirt.  The Tory Burch boutique on RueLaLa will remain open for five days, longer than a traditional Rue La La boutique, which lasts for 48 hours. All net proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief efforts in Japan .  Props to Tory and RueLaLa for coming up with this stylish idea. RueLaLa has thousands of members, so if some of them buy a shirt, it will be a great fund raising effort.

“Our hearts are breaking for our family, friends and the millions in Japan and around the world affected by this devastating disaster,” said Tory Burch, CEO, Tory Burch LLC. “We want to do whatever we can to help this strong, resilient country.”

Of course, you don't have to buy a T-shirt to help.  You can make a direct donation, or leave a comment here on the blog.  For every comment I receive on this post, I will give $1.00 to the American Red Cross for Earthquake relief  (up to $100.00 or 100 comments.) Sorry, I have to set a limit since I am on a low budget over here at The Recessionista.:)

What do you think of the T-shirt readers? Would you buy the shirt to help, or would you rather just make a donation to the Red Cross?

Los Angeles Fashion Week: Designers & the City Unite for a Great Week of Fashion

Pictured: Mannequins at Hope in the City Charity event (photo: M. Hall)

Last week was Los Angeles Fashion Week.  No, it's not the same as New York Fashion Week in terms of organization and variety of shows, but  Los Angeles put on some great shows last week.  As I've said before Los Angeles has a burgeoning fashion scene  with some great designers, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) and the thriving California Mart downtown with sample showrooms to rival NY's Garment District.  Last week, individual designers put on shows at private venues (Lauren Elaine, Sue Wong) and collective groups of young designers joined together to put put on shows (Concept at the Art Deco Ace Gallery  featuring Jen Awad, Thai Nguyen, Project Runway'Mila Hermanovski and Directives). Hope in the City combined fashion with charitable giving with an event to highlight local designers and benefit homeless women.  Briefly, here's a round-up of a few LA Fashion Week highlights.

Jen Awad's Show (photo: M. Hall)

Jen Awad put on a very interesting and very 60's looking show (at least to me) at Concept last weekend.  There were plenty of min-skirts, bows, lace up tops and models sporting hair and make-up similar to 60's icon Brigitte Bardot  The show was a real departure from the romantic looks and full skirts from Jen's last collection. Jen Awad's Fall 2011 collection offered casual looks, but also a few gowns worthy of the Hollywood Red Carpet.  Following Jen Awad was designer Thai Nguyen debuting a romantic collection of full length gowns and cocktails dresses. I really liked the beautiful flowing gowns he presented.

Also featured at Concept were Project Runway'Mila Hermanovski collection of recycled Cashmere sweaters and tunics with geometric shapes.  The small collection reminded me of Nicole Miller's work. Each of Mila's creations is unique due to the reused materials she works with.  No piece will look like any other.  I found her collection beautiful as well as sustainable.  I follow Mila (Brave New Frock) on Twitter, and was Tweeting with her during the Oscars. She has been working with Costume Designer Colleen Atwood and helped design Helena Bonham Carter's recent Oscar gown.  It's great to see her talent in design continuing post Project Runway.

Hope in the City (photo: M. Hall)
Following Concept, Hope in the City put on a runway show and fashion bazar at the Skirball Center that offered a little bit of everything.   There were local designers, vintage looks, accessories and even costumes.  The show did a good job highlighting local  artists and designers and benefited a very worthy cause, the Downtown Women’s Center. Highlights of the show included a Signature Experimental Designer Showcase showing garments inspired by physical art pieces of L.A. artists plus collections by Chelsea Rebelle and Dual Society. LA designer and blogger Heather Petrey took to the runway with flair and style in a deep purple cocktail dress.  Overall the show had a little bit of everything, and was very entertaining.  Technology played a part in the event as attendees could also use their smart phones at vendor tables to get extra information on the designers and exhibits.

Designer Sue Wong with her models.
Without a doubt the most established and commercially successful designer showing at LA Fashion Week is Sue Wong.  She always does her own private event. This year she hosted her fashion show and brunch at her beautiful Los Feliz home, The Cedars.  Her Fall 2011 collection was an ode to "My Fair Lady" showing plenty of Edwardian styles along with Ms. Wong's trademark embellishments and beading.  The collection featured Cecil Beaton worthy ornate gowns and cocktail dresses in rich satin, flowing chiffons and fine laces.  There were embellished dresses featuring Edwardian inspired beadwork, intricate embroidery and delicate appliques with skirts of organza and ostrich feather. Beautiful, romantic, and elegant, the collection "can transform any woman into a goddess, enchantress and duchess" said Wong.  Sounds good to me.   Sue Wong is sold at retailers like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales, but Recessionistas can find her fashions every now and then on sample sale site Ideeli.  I always post when Sue Wong is on sale, as I simply love her styles and want to share the good deals.

Designer Lauren Elaine put on a romantic and fanciful Fall 2011 presentation at Castle Antiques Hollywood.  Her collection is a mix of feminine and vintage inspired cocktail dresses.  You can see it for yourself by checking out her campaign video for her collection Los-Angeles based designer, Ina Soltani showed her Fall/Winter 2011 collection at the former Vibiana cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. Ms. Soltanti's beautiful collection consisted of bold and sparkling colors, flirty mini dresses, and statement gowns.  Her stunning styles have made her a red carpet favorite among actresses and models. She showed stunning metallic gowns and dresses, as well as traditional romantic styles.

Pictured: Scenes from Ina Soltani's Fall 2010 Collection (photos courtesy of  Ina Soltani)
Other highlights of LA Fashion week were shows by environmentally conscious Boho-chic label Gypsy05 and casually comfortable Alternative Apparel.  Check their websites for more information on their collections.

Overall, LA Fashion Week was much improved and I look forward to seeing Los Angeles's  fashion talent continue to thrive. There's much to be said for our own local designers and their contribution to California's economy.  Thanks to all of them for their hard work last week

Mrs. Obama Takes on Brazil in Reasonably Priced Tracy Reese

Pictured: The Obamas arrive in Brazil (photo from the Associated Press)
Mrs. Obama stepped off the plane in Brazil this weekend wearing a reasonably priced (for a First Lady) dress by one of her favorite designers, Tracy Reese.  Despite continued criticism (from people like Steven "Cojo" Cojocaru and Oscar de la Renta)  about bearing her arms, Mrs. O continues to do so, and why not? She is in good shape and she was traveling to a warm place.  I like how she continues to incorporate "off the rack" garments, that any woman can walk into a store and buy, into her working wardrobe.  This sends a message that she is being cost conscious during continued tough economic times.  She continues to wear American designers, H&M and J Crew for her engagements.  The dress  she wore to Brazil is Tracy Reese's Auburn Tribal Stripes Strapless with Borders available online for approximately $350.00.  Ok, this is not cheap per say, but consider that is is much cheaper than the couture worn by Mrs. Reagan or Mrs. Kennedy.   And Tracy Reese will also go on sale, and be priced lower still.  Look for plenty of Tracy Reese on sale today at the Last Call sale.  Today is the last day to take advantage of the savings. I wouldn't be surprised if Mrs. O is checking out the sale today.  I think she is pretty savvy with her clothing spending, continuing to work and live Recessionista :)

For some time, I 've been wanting to check out supper shopping site Tobi, and today, I found a deal that spurred me on. This weekend Tobi is offering an extra 10% off to their Facebook fans.   If you haven't heard of Tobi.com, it is an online fashion boutique based in San Francisco, CA with an amazing stock of designer fashions for both men & women. Some of my favorite designers on Tobi that you might want to check out include: Robbi & Nikki (Robert Rodriguez), BCBG, James Pearse, Fluxus, Alternative Apparel, Nanette Lepore, Ella Moss, Alice & Olivia,  Vince, Michael Stars, KORS by Michael Kors and many more.   Be sure and check it out if you're looking for some high-end fashion pieces at great prices.  I just ordered this stunning Robbi & Nikki top already on sale for 50% off of retail, reduced to $70.00 from $176.00.  I tried this on at the Fred Segal Robbi & Nikki boutique, and it's stunning.   I missed it at the Fred Segal sale, so I'm glad I got another chance to pick it up at Tobi.

Pictured: My new Robbi & Nikki top from website Tobi.com
One last tip of Tobi, they have accessories, shoes, handbags and jewelry on sale as well as apparel.  Give it a look for some good deals.  I'm much more in favor of shopping an online boutique for free, than paying for a ticket to a live shopping event to gain admittance to shop sponsored by a large magazine.  The Tobi.com Facebook deal has ended, but you can shop anytime and save 20% using the code RECESSIONISTA20.

Bridal Gowns at Costco: Kirstie Kelly Gowns on sale for under $1,000.

Yes, it's true.  Costco is now selling wedding dresses. Bridal Gowns to be exact, for savings of approximately 40% off of retail prices according to their website.   Frugal brides wishing to save can now make a fitting appointment at their local Costco warehouse.  Romantic? No.  Thrifty? Yes.  Bridal gowns can cost thousands of dollars, and Costco will be selling designer Kirstie Kelly gowns for under $1,000 US.   According to the Los Angeles Times,  the gowns at CostCo "range in price from $700 .. to $1,400 for a satin hand-beaded gown with a sweetheart neckline and detachable jeweled cap sleeves." Ka-ching!

I've got my eye on this one to see how Costco does in the wedding gown game. Can Costco develop "Costco Couture?" Can they take business from Vera Wang at David's Bridal? J. Crew and Anthropologie too?   In the words of Elvis Costello, "It's Getting Mighty Crowded."    Moreover, will brides want to schlep out to a Costco warehouse to try on the dress of their dreams?  The jury is out on this one. Costco never ceases to amaze. (My local store even sells Cartier watches from time to time.)   Just think, you could go to Costco to cater your wedding reception, get the wine/alcohol and buy your dress.  One stop wedding shopping.  I can just hear the Costco registers ringing.

H&M Spring Favs: Bohemian DeLuxe and More

H&M has just launched some great Bohemian inspired maxi dresses and hippie tops.  If you haven't seen these new spring pieces, you'll want to make a bee line over to H&M.  I love the romantic looks, and the prices.  Check out the dress above for under $20.00 US.    There are also some great jackets, skirts and pants that you could take to the office, and then out for a drink later.

Pictured: Some of H&M's new Spring styles.
Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design, has some clear favorites as the spring season heats up. “I just love this season’s cool 70’s style for women,” she says, “with romantic dresses and tops, denim, long skirts and chic shorts.” The casual look is all about a wonderful spring feeling and is one that works brilliantly with all the added extras. “Accessories are pretty bold and terrific,” says Ann-Sofie.   Look for accessories like espadrilles, sunglasses, bags and of course H&M's trademark chic n' cheap jewelry.   I love the wrap jacket in peach above and will be scouring my local store for it!  If you go to H&M look for savings on knitwear and 20% off of some kids styles right now.  For details, check out HM.com

Shoe Survey: Emotional Shopping for Soles under $50.00 is a Popular Pastime

Pictured: Cinderella with her life changing glass slipper (art from Disney clip art).

Remember the  fairy tale of Cinderella? Her life was changed by a magic pair of shoes- her glass slippers.  Turns out today's shoe shoppers may be looking not only a good bargain, but for a pair of shoes as transformational as Cinderella's.   In a new study from Consumer Reports, and ShopSmart Magazine, research found that women own an average of 17 pairs of shoes (down  from 19 four years ago) yet only typically wear three of those pairs on a regular basis.  Over half of women (51%) own more than 10 pairs and 13 percent have over 30 pairs (not including athletic shoes). But we're not talking about Christian Louboutins here or the closet of Imelda Marcus.  It's not luxury shoes we're stocking up on.  The poll found that  women typically purchase three pairs of shoes a year and, on average, spend $49 on a pair of shoes, while nearly one-third (31%) have ever spent over $100 on a single pair.

Here are some of the highlights of the magazine's study.  This is good news for Payless, DSW, TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Kohl's (Vera Wang) and other retailers selling upscale shoes for less.

Online ‘Sole’ Searching

    * Buying shoes online is a new national obsession. Almost a third (29%) of American women are doing it, a significant increase from four years ago when only 14% were buying shoes online.
    * Over one third (39%) of those who have purchased shoes online have made a return.

If the Shoe Fits

    * Nearly one-fifth (19%) have gone shoe shopping to cheer themselves up.
    * Although the majority of women (86%) are up front with their spouse or significant other about their shoe purchase, 14% admit to hiding at least one purchase.
    * Over one quarter (28%) feel shoes are an important part of their outfit indicating that they put a lot of thought into selecting them each day. Plus over half of women (51%) typically notice shoes other people are wearing.

Well Heeled?

    * For everyday footwear, women prefer flats as 39 percent of women indicate that it is the preferred heel height. Only 8 percent of women wear heels over 2 ½ inches on a regular basis.
    * Despite a preference for flats, one quarter have worn heels 4” or higher on at least one occasion.
    * Forty-six percent of women have bought an ugly pair for comfort, but more women are willing to tolerate pain for fashion—60% vs.49%—than they were in 2007.
    * Women take precautions for the pain as 61 percent have carried a second pair of shoes to a party or event to change into.

The Taming of the Shoe

    * Forty-eight percent have had a shoe-related injury (blister, break, sprain, etc.).
    * Thirty-five percent of women had an evening ruined by an uncomfortable pair of shoes.
    * Twenty-four percent have fallen because of their shoes.

If you're shopping for the perfect pair of shows, check out Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Off Fifth,  or Nordstrom's Rack.  They sell great brands, and all the designers, for less.  Just remember, ignore what Steve Martin called "Cruel Shoes" anywhere you find them. Don't sacrifice your fashion soul for your soles:)

Next Designer for Less: Matthew Williamson for Macy's

Pictured: A sketch  and picture of Matthew Williamson's one shoulder dress for Macy's.  (images courtesy of Macy's)
The day after I wrote that Target was no longer the only game in town for budget fashions, Macy's formally announces that British Designer Matthew Williamson will be the next Macy's Capsule Collection designer for their new Impulse line.  Even more stunning, the Macy's prices will start at $50.00 US ( that's £31 for my UK readers) for his line.  Bring it Macy's!  The collection is expected in over 225 stores on April 13th.

Some of you will remember Matthew's brightly colored Spring/Summer Collection for H&M which included swimwear and accessories.   So what can you expect from Williamson's Macy's style?  My spies tell me that there will be colorful separates and collectible 70s-inspired dresses priced  from $50 - $120 US, with specialty pieces selling up to $300. Key items will include bold, graphic animal inspired print and embellished day and party dresses, bohemian blouses, printed scarves and flirty day-to-evening rompers, all with Matthew’s "iconic" styling.   And you heard it hear first, look for Williamson's trademark peacock like colors and prints.

Picture: Two dress sketches from Matthew Williamson's Macy's collection.  (images courtesy of Macy's)

“Working with Macy’s on a capsule collection for spring has been a great project for our company. It's been really enjoyable to work with such a huge iconic U.S. retail brand and to create a collection that will be available at Macy's for a limited time only,” said Matthew Williamson. “The collection aims to capture the essence of the mainline brand, with a focus on effortless glamour, dynamic prints, loosely structured silhouettes and pops of strong color. I'm thrilled to see the final collection come to life and look forward to seeing the line on the shop floor at the launch on April 13th at Herald Square.”

I can't help but think the yellow dress sketch looks a bit like a Lanvin.  What do you think readers?

Target's Go Dress Collection Review: It's a "No Go"

Today Target's re-released collection of 34 dresses from their past 5 years of Go Collections by various designers arrived at Target stores in the United States.  At my local Target , there were plenty of the dresses still sitting on the racks when I arrived this morning.  Granted it was only 11:00 am, but I think the days of absolute consumer excitement and sheer "gotta have it" are over when it comes to clothing from Target.  There were few shoppers looking at the designer merchandise.  Most of the customers were in the grocery section of the store, or the electronics section.

Pictured: Aisles of Go dresses at my local Target.
Although I was originally excited to see all the restocked dresses in store, my excitement quickly faded upon examining the goods. The Behnaz Sarafpour dress with the Lacy tiers is too short, and the polyester lace replica layers don't lay flat.  The zippers in the Zac Posen dresses still don't zip up properly.  The Alice Temperley dresses have bulky waist ties and are too thigh high to partner well with their high collars and ruffles. Per usual, everything is sized small.  Note all the comments on Target.com about "sizing up."  I found myself wondering why Target re-issued these with the exact same design flaws that customers left comments about on Target.com years ago?  It seems there was a chance here to make these better than their predecessors, and that chance was simply ignored.   To me, the best dress in the collection, for the price, is the Paul & Joe black spaghetti strap sundress.   That dress is $24.99.  However, the skirt is very thin, only the bust is double layered, leaving the skirt completely see through when you step into the light.  I didn't buy it for that reason. The Jovovich -Hawk dresses are cute, but I'm not interested in buying those again.

When Target first bought the Go Collection to market in 2006, there weren't many competitors producing budget fashion by designers.  Only H&M had truly ventured into that space with their 2004 collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld.  But times have changed. In 2011, budget designer collaborations are everywhere.  Rory Beca is at Forever21. Macy's has launched Impulse and signed Kinder Aggugini, Matthew Williamson and Karl Lagerfeld to make clothes for the line. Norma Kamali is at Walmart.  New Look has GOLD by Giles Deacon. The amazing Vera Wang is at Kohl's. JC Penney has Nicole Miller. Jodi Arnold was at The Limited.  Many designers are on eBay, with more coming.  Designer sample sale sites like Gilt, Ideeli, Rue La La, Haute Look, Editor's Closet and My Nines offer the designers at reduced prices. The OutNet regularly offers designers at reduced prices.   With so many choices, there is no reason to jump at the chance to buy a $45.00 US dress at Target that is poorly made. Beyond the crooked seams, and serge stitched edges, some of the pieces (especially those that are 5 to 4 years old) just look dated, and not in a good way. For my hard-earned money, Target needs to step up their game if they want to continue to make their Go line a profit center. I'll be curious to see how many of the dresses end up on the clearance rack.

Editor's Closet Blow Out Sales- Quality for Price

If you haven't checked out  Designer Sample Sale site Editor's Closet, today is a good day to peruse their sales.   There are some great close out sales today, plus one of my favorites, designer Alberta Ferretti is one sale. Click here to use my invite to shop. There are some amazing luxury items for sale here today including Alberta Ferretti cashmere sweaters with embellished necklines, jeweled silk tops, Oscar worthy gowns and great wide leg pants.   This site is more expensive than some of the sample sites, but the garments are of very high quality fabric by top notch designers.  Trust me, I'd rather have an Alberta Ferretti sweater or top for $150.00 than a few ( 3 X $44.00)  of  the polyester Go Dresses from Target's Designer collection (relaunching tomorrow) for about the same price.

Another thing I like about this site--they pulled their John Galliano stock after his anti-Semitic rants, and quick.  Via Twitter the company stated, "Editors' Closet has pulled #JohnGalliano products from the site. We do not condone hateful behavior. It's about peace & love, right fans?" Right on.

In the interests of full disclosure, I do earn a modest referral fee from Editor's Closet if you shop and buy using my invite.  However, I don't recommend the prices here everyday, only when they are having great sales on quality goods, as they are today.  Grab a good cup of tea and give it a looksy, especially The Outlet section!

LA Fashion Week, not Fashion Weak, Kicks-Off Fall 2011 Collections

Skeptics may scoff, but LA Fashion Week (LAFW) is upon us again. Although LA Fashion Wee is widely regarded as a poor cousin to the bigger  fashion events around the globe particularly, New York Fashion Week, there are always some worthy highlights to consider.  Los Angeles has quite a burgeoning fashion scene here with some great designers and the thriving California Mart downtown with sample showrooms to rival NY's Garment District. Yet,  Los Angeles Fashion Week has remained something of  a red-headed step child. In many ways,  LAFW is its own worst enemy.  Some Los Angeles shows have seemed more like rock shows than events about the business of fashion.  Pulse pounding music and runways shows at midnight don't necessarily impress buyers from retail stores. Or this blogger!  In New York at Fashion Week there is no long cocktail hour pre-show or musical act playing until 1 am. The clothes are the stars period.  Not so in Los Angeles. Here in LA, it's not just about the clothes, but the presentation and...the party!  Yes, that's why Richie Sambora (WTB) actually has a runway show at LA Fashion Week.

Here's what's coming up that's on my radar.  Now, these are my personal favorites in the crop of designers and shows. Fashion Minga Schminga, that I don't care for (and it's not on my pick list) , but LA Designers Jen Awad, Sue Wong and Lauren Elaine always deliver. I'm also  very excited that designer Tony Cohen will be showing here at the THV PR show.  And, I look forward to seeing what's new from Gypsy 05 at Style Fashion Week.

If you're not in LA, I'll keep you posted on what events might be streaming online, so you can check them out.   For a complete list, head over to  the new LA Fashion Week Online site or the bible of the LA Fashion Industry California Apparel News.

Good Deal: Estee Lauder Gift with Purchase at Macy's

Estee Lauder is making Macy's shoppers a deal that's hard to refuse.  In case you haven't heard, you can receive a 7 piece GIFT with a  $32.50 US Estee Lauder purchase  plus, more goodies if you purchase $60 worth of Estee Lauder cosmetics.   Even better, you can customize your gift bag and pick the cosmetics you want.  You can choose the lip glosses and eye shadows that suit your skin tone.  How good is that? The problem with some of the "free " gift stuff used to be that it came in colors your would never want to use, and typically not found in nature. You know what I'm talking about!   I'm thinking of the many neon orange lipsticks, the tarty pink lip glosses or midnight blue tinged eye shadows hiding in my cosmetic drawer.  If so much better to choose your own gift pack, and avoid the atrocities of the free lipstick bin.  You can purchase in store or online, and if you purchase $50.00 worth, then shipping is free.  I'm not here to sell Estee Lauder, and I don't receive a commission on this post, but I thought y'all should know.   The Estee Launder sales with free product always get my Mom out to Macy's to restock her products and get her free gifts.  It's the only time the Sr. VP of Team Recessionista gets her beloved Estee Lauder--when it's on sale.  In the words of Janis Joplin, "Get it while you can!"

Wellness Giveaway: Normal Kamali Olive Oil Wellness Kit

Pictured: Norma Kamali Olive Oil Beauty Products Giveaway.
If you follow me on Twitter, then you know I have been sick with a nasty bug. for the past few days.  I'm no longer shopping for the best fashions at the best prices, but rather Puffs, Theraflu, Vick's Vapor Rub and some Zicam.  This is how bad things are.  I got so sick, I even tuned in for 10 minutes to Sheen's Korner to see Charlie's live webcast over the weekend.  Times have been tough!

One of the few things I've been enjoying in the past week is the Wellness Kit that designer Norma Kamali gave me.   Some of you may not know this, but since 9/11, Norma has been exploring the healing natural properties of Olive Oil.  " I don’t know everything, but just after 9/11 I got involved in this Olive Oil product and I realized that these products are so simple," says the designer. "There are no chemicals. Everything has been around for thousands of years. You can have a mask that’s made out of sea clay, olive oil and ground olive pits. It’s great for your skin and you can feel and see results. That you just puree olives and that’s a great soap or you put ground olive pits in that and you have an exfoliator. A liniment that’s made out of calcium and olive oil, that’s great to calm the skin of sunburn or diaper rash.  Massaging olive oil, first pressed olive oil, into your skin and having the nutrition go into your bloodstream instead of these toxic chemicals just made sense."

If you stop in her 56th St store in New York, you can visit her wellness cafe where she sells some amazing natural products, including Lavender Ice Cream with Olive Oil.  I've meet Norma a few times, and she has the most amazing skin which she attributes to her healthy diet and her use of Olive Oil products.  In the last few days, I've been checking out her Olive Oil body wash and  massage oil.  It may not make the cold/flu disappear any quicker, but it's making me feel better, and soothing my skin so I don't feel so dehydrated. After a hot shower, or stream room treatment, I'm enjoying a slathering of the Olive Calcium Liniment or Massage Oil before throwing on my soft fleece from Alternative Apparel. It really feels good and provides some comfort during a period of extreme discomfort, congestion and sneezing!   So, I'm passing along the NK Wellness love to some of my readers.  I'm giving away a Normal Kamali Wellness Travel Kit. Enter here leaving a comment to win a collection of Norma Kamali's Olive Oil soaps, moisturizers, masques, and liniments.

Simply leave a comment here, and tell me if you have ever used Olive Oil on your skin, or if you would like to try it.  Special bonus if you have a common cold remedy left in your comment :) To enter, simply leave your email address in your comment like so:  Norma at yahoo dot com, so I can get in touch with you  if you win.   Comments will be accepted until Monday, March 21st at midnight PST.

The Recessionista Reviews Kinder Agguini for Macy's

Pictured: My favorite dress from Kinder Agguini for Macy's

I've been checking out the Kinder Agguini collection at Macy's for the last two weeks in search of the above purple dress with floral panel down the front.  Today I found it and I have to say, it's pretty fabuless.   The Kinder Agguini for Macy's Impulse collection launched about two weeks ago, and it's selling briskly.  In fact many of the dresses, including the one pictured about are already sold out online. But as some of the pieces sell out, new pieces are still being added to the collection.   This week a Victorian inspired print top with tie back has been added.  I just saw Kinder Agguin's London Fashion Week collection online and it's true that the Macy's Impulse collection does contain his signature touches: lush draping, lovely prints, kimono sleeves and tailored jackets.  Most of the pieces are true Misses sizing, but a few items like the leather and boucle jackets run smaller and are more junior sized.  The collection is priced on average from $40-$140 US, with specialty pieces selling up to $300.00 US. The line features jackets, knitwear, dresses, shorts and even a romper.  My favorite pieces in the collection are the dresses with the colorful prints.  They skim the figure in a flattering way are will travel well without wrinkling.  There are long sleeved dresses with floral prints at the top, or panels on the skirt, as well as faux wrap dresses with flutter sleeves that are surprisingly flattering. I also adore the cute cardigan sweater with the puff sleeves and polka dot trim around the collar and sleeves.  There's also a great black vintage looking rain coat/trench with red flowers along the hem for $119.00 US.  As always, there are some items I'm not so crazy about : the satin disco like shorts and ruffled Swiss dot shirt.  For the prices, those are a big pass.

Pictured: A collection of fashions from Kinder Agguini's Macy's line,

Although Kinder Agguini is much better known in Europe than the states, a few Macy's shoppers may recognize his name.  He's worked with upscale British fashion houses like Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith. "When I was approached by Macy's, I thought they were going to ask me to be in the Thanksgiving Day Parade," Aggugini said in a press statement. "Imagine my surprise when I heard they wanted me to design a line for their stores all over the U.S. So I thought, 'A designer known for handcrafted luxury aimed to the fashion elite, to create a contemporary line for the kids of America? Oh yeah, sounds great! Let's do it!' And we can make it different. Let's design it as if it was a runway collection, make this line about silhouettes, colors, draping and structure. The idea is to give it a chic look, that feels sexy and edgy and best of all, you can afford it."

I would say this collection is a success and is better made and tailored than anything Target Go has brought to market. One reason is, it is not made in only small sizes that are best suited for tweens (think William Rast for Target). While it's selling quickly, Kinder Agguini  for Macy's Impulse is certainly much more accessible that a limited collection H&M designer offering.  You won't have to get up at 5 a.m. and wait in line to shop Kinder Agguini  for Macy's. It's also available at Macys.com, but unfortunately you can't use a coupon or Macy's Passport coupon to get a discount. So far, there are no discounts on Kinder at Macy's. But believe me, I'm watching for any reductions or sales on this collection.

Sunday Savvy: Christian Siriano for Spiegel

Have you heard? Christian Siriano is launching a limited edition collection with Spiegel!   Yes, he's dabbled in budget fashion before with his Payless shoe lines, but now, finally, you can buy lower priced Christian Siriano garments similar to some of his Oscar fashions and New York Fashion Week runway collections via Spiegel.   It's been awhile since Spiegel had a hot designer in their catalogue of fashions, so Christian should add a needed infusion of new customers.

Pictured: Siriano's modern two-piece black suit for Spiegel.
I took a little Sunday morning walk through Christian's collection this morning over some strong coffee and was impressed.   So here's what in the 12 piece collection: a stunning gabardine black suit, gowns, cocktail dresses, a jersey dress, blouses and a chiffon one shoulder dress.  The prices point is from $49.00 US for a jersey blouse to $399.00 US for the chiffon evening gown.  Sizing ranges from Misses size 2 US to size 18 US.  Clearly, this collection will appeal to a broad range of styles, budgets and sizes, which is smart marketing on the part of Spiegel.  To me, the most stunning piece in the collection is the Origami Strapless Dress, which is a dead ringer for an updated Little Black Dress I saw in Christian's Fall 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week.

Pictured:  Siriano's Origami Strapless Dress from Spiegel looks hot and haute.
The Origami Strapless dress (above) with the high bodice has such a haute couture look, it's hard to believe that it's on offer via Spiegel for $199.00 US.  I'd be curious to see what it really looks like.   I ordered the Black Peplum Zip-Front Jacket with Matching Gathered Skirt because I need a new suit, and I liked the modern look of this one with Christian's trademark zippers on the skirt.  I used two Spiegel codes to bring the retail price of the suit down which I found online. Check RetailMeNot and Coupon Cabin for discount/promo codes. I used code 476 to get 15% off the price of the suit, and another code for free shipping.  Overall, Christian Siriano for Spiegel looks great.   I'll let you know about the fit and quality when I receive my suit.   The whole collection is available for order now, but won't be in stock until April.  So, it will be a while before fashionistas can really access the real value of the Siriano/Spiegel collaboration.
