Is a Good Sale on Jean's more Exciting than Sex? Some Women Say Yes!

A recent study conducted by People StyleWatch polled 2,000 women ages 18 to 29 and found that 48% of women are more excited getting jeans on sale than having sex.  This seems kind of crazy to me frankly. Does it to you?  I mean come on!  Jeans! We're not talking about Christian Dior or Roland Mouret, which I could completely understand getting more excited about than sex... if they were on sale :)

Speaking of Jeans, if you live in LA, check out the new J. Brands Jeans outlet.   My spies are telling me this is a good one.  Check out what Suzanne at  BargainsLA says about it.

Father's Day Gift Suggestions: June 19th is Father's Day

Pictured: Suggested Toys for Boys
Did you all have a wonderful and relaxing three day break over this Memorial Day weekend? I can't believe the break is almost over.  Yes, I shopped the Memorial Day sales, and I got a few good deals.  Now it's time to shift gears, and start thinking of shopping for someone else. Don't forget, Father's Day is coming up on June 19th this year.  Are you ready? Here's a little suggestion. Warning.   Do not give Dad a Tie. Or clothes.  It maybe one of the worst all time gifts ever for men.  Yes, they need them, no they don't want them as gifts.  What do I think Dads all over the world want?  Toys for Guys, aka electronics and sporting event tickets.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • New DVD Player with DVDs for viewing
  • American Express Gift Certificates --now fees, you get the full card amount to spend(so he can get what he really wants)
  • New iPOD + iPod download gift cards
  • New iPad, check for savings at a MacMall in your area to find deals.
  • New Cell Phone, take your pick of an Android ,Window's 7 Phone, Blackberry, Google Phone or iPhone (check the AT&T deals on refurbished phones, the costs are fairly inexpensive)
  • iPad
  • Tickets to Sporting Events (LA Lakers comes to mind) or concerts (Check TicketLiquidator.com for deals)
  • If your Dad or Husband likes to play Grill man, look for grill deals everywhere from Big Lots to Sears.
  • Dinner out at the restaurant of his choice (check Restaurants.com for deals or buy a gift card at Costco for restaurants like Flemings.)
I would recommend shopping  for the above items at Best Buy, Frye's, Kohl's (constant sales and Kohl's cash),  Macy's, CostCo, Sam's Club or BJ's Warehouse.   If you find some good deals for Dad, leave a comment and share the wealth!

Sunday Savvy: New Reductions on Matthew Williamson for Macy's Impulse

Heads-up shoppers, the Matthew Williamson for Macy's Impulse collection has hit the sales racks for Memorial Day weekend, with new mark downs just taken.  I reviewed this collection when it first arrived in stores, and there are some very well done pieces here, especially the beautiful prints. Now, the prices have dropped to a point where they are almost irresistible--these prices are what Target is charging now for some of the Calypso St. Barth stuff!   Many of the pieces for Mathew Williamson are sold out at Macy's online, but I will be going to the store to see what's left.

I'm still lusting for this gorgeous blue smocked tiered dress which is now sold out online!

News Flash: No More Uniqlo US Phone or Mail orders as of June 1, 2011

Pictured: One of my new $29.99 Costello Tagliapietra Uniqlo dresses.

Recently, I'd been enjoying ordering from Uniqlo especially, since they launched their designer invitation project, featuring Costello Tagliapietra, Charlotte Ronson + Vena Cava.  All the items are now in stock at Uniqlo stores.  I bought two of the amazing Costello Tagliapietra dresses for only $29.99.  They are gorgeous and look much, much more expensive than their $29.99 price tag. The draping and details on theses dresses are exquisite.

Pictured:  My fav piece from the Uniqlo Vena Cava Collection
I was also lucky enough to get one of the Antoni + Alison T-shirts. Finally, I bought the Vena Cava two color, one piece top for $29.99, and it is exquisite.  This is really an amazing piece for the price.

But all of my long distance UNIQLO ordering love is coming to an end as of June 1.  I just  spoke to UNIQLO, and as of June 1, they will no longer accept phone or email orders, at least in the US.   So darlings, this is a warning, if you don't live in NYC and you want something from UNIQLO order before May 31, 2011.  In the words of Jim Morrison and the Doors, "This is the end, beautiful friends the end."  If you have any UNIQLO items that you are lusting for call their customer service number and place an order over this weekend.  In the US, the number is 1-877-486-4756. You can try to email them too at: customerservice@uniqlo-usa.com, but be forewarned, emails are not responded to as quickly as phone orders.

And don't try to order this stunning  +J Cocoon dress for $129.00 because it's already sold out!

Pictured: New +J Collection is in at UNIQLO.

The New Affair of the Necklace : Urban Outfitters Twitter Backlash for Copying

Have you checked out Twitter today to see all the conversations about Urban Outfitters? Big props to one of the Tweeps, @amberkarnes for shining the Twitter spotlight on the global problem of large retailers copying or knocking off  independent designers and then selling the goods as their own creation and reaping the profits while they don't even pay 1 penny to the original creator via something as simple as a licensing agreement.  That's called corporate greed in my opinion.   Here's what happened.  A talented independent designer, Stevie  Koerner of Esty shop Tru.Che had been designing and selling necklaces with US states on them as pendants. The pendants were very successful it seems, and retailer Urban Outfitters rendered one that seemed, er, let me just say, very, very similar.  The pictures don't lie. See for yourself.

Take a look at  one of Stevie’s “I Heart NY” necklaces via The My Aim is True Blog.
I heart NY Necklace

And Urban Outfitters’ ripoff “I Heart ____” necklace:

Urban Outfitters Ripoff Design

From Stevie’s tumblr post:
"My heart sank a little bit. The World/United States of Love line that I created is one of the reasons that I was able to quit my full-time job. They even stole the item name as well as some of my copy."
Thank goodness Stevie Koerner saw the copy, and blogged about it.  When you're being robbed, it's a good thing to be able to let people know, and social media makes this possible on a grand scale.  Following Stevie's post, the copy cat necklace by Urban began to be shared.  From what I have read, it was first shared by a reader on Facebook, and then most effectively by Amber on her Twitter feeds. Amber, I applaud you for waging this Twitter intervention!  To me, the mass copying is one of the saddest things coming out of the recession.  As the designers struggle, and sometimes can't mass produce things at a low costs, bigger chains come in and take their designs, outsource them and mass produce them for a low cost.   But they rarely work with the designers to cut them in on the deal, and give them a piece of the action.  How petty is that? Urban has a history of doing a little knocking off. Check out the article from the Village Voice on some of their past practices. Urban is not alone in this practice, they are just the ones that got caught today.   Coach and DVF have both raised issues with Target in the past.

The copycat syndrome has been happening for ages. It happens to blogs.  My blog has been knocked off repeatedly.  I know other bloggers who have had their pictures and copy taken.   And as Amber said in her original tweet on the Urban Outfitters, "That is not OK."   My hope today is that Urban Outfitters offers designer Stevie a big fat settlement agreement.  Even Miley Cryus is now tweeting on this one.  My recommendation to Urban, put this wrong right and quick. You have the means.   Do the right thing.

A Sad Return: My Christian Siriano Suit from Spiegel

Pictured: Siriano's modern two-piece black suit for Spiegel.

Back in early March, I blogged that Christian Siriano was launching a limited edition collection with Spiegel.
I was truly excited to have the opportunity to buy lower priced Christian Siriano garments similar to some of his Oscar fashions and New York Fashion Week runway collections via Spiegel. Unfortunately, I was not as excited about the suit once it arrived and I tried it on.  I promised to give you an update on the suit once I received it, so here it is.  The suit was not for me.  The jacket was a little too form fitting  (when zipped ) to be good business attire and the Peplum trim was jutting out on the bottom of the jacket, which I felt made my hips look bigger than need be.  The Peplum looks like a big ruffle hanging form the waistline of the jacket, in my humble opinion. Bottom line, I'm returning the suit to Speigel.  It took 2 months to get the suit from the time of order, and the special event I had planned to wear it for has already past.  Plus, for the total price of $171.00, I decided, I should be in love with this suit, and it should be in love with me.  Sadly, it's not, so I have to truck to the nearest UPS today and put a big fat return label on it.   If the suit doesn't fit, you must return and get your credit card charges refunded readers! :) That's the way it goes.

Has anyone else tried a piece from Christian Siriano for Spiegel? If so please leave a comment and let me know you thoughts.  The style and fit didn't work for me, but it might be a dream for someone with a different shape.  I do think Christian Siriano is a worthy and wonderful designer, so I'm sad this one didn't work out.

Princess Bea's Hat Sells for 130k!

Pictured: Princess Beatrice in her literally "over the top" Royal Wedding hat. (photo: Mark Cuthbert/Abaca)

Last week, I reported that Fergie's daughter Princess Beatrice was auctioning her Royal Wedding hat on eBay for charity.  Frankly, I was a bit skeptical about how much money this one might raise.  But, when you're the granddaughter of the Queen of England, doors and bid are clearly open.  Fergie's girl's hat sold for 130k US.

Yesterday in a statement Princess Bea discussed the sale, and the high price of the winning bid. "It has its own personality, and I am so happy that we have raised the most incredible amount of money and can make an even bigger change for the lives of some of the most vulnerable children across the world,"  Beatrice, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Duchess Sarah Ferguson, said in a statement.  Clearly, someone has money to burn.  I hope the proceeds help children around the world via UNICEF.  Wonder if we will ever see this hat worn on anyone else's head in public? :)

Designer Savings Priced and Sized Right: 365Hangers.com

Pictured: A selection of designer dresses from the website of  365Hangers.com
If you haven't heard of the website 365Hangers.com, then you have been missing out on some great designer deals.  But it's not just the prices that make this site unique.  It's the way the clothes are presented on the site.   Items are presented by size, so you will see everything from Small to Extra Large, shown on models who are actually the size displayed for that category of size.  When you're used to looking at clothes modeled on women who are size 0, 2 or 4, it's a surprise to see the models on 365Hangers.com.  But it's also very cool to see women in all ranges of size and shapes showing off clothes that are styled for that shape.  The selection of designers is pretty amazing. You'll find brand names like Marc Jacobs, Trina Turk, DVF, DKNY,  French Connection, Tory Burch, Aqua, Tracey Reese, Vince, Ralph Lauren and many more.  Generally, the prices are about 70% of retail.  However, you won't see any one dress in a range of sizes.  So you won't find the same Marc Jacobs dress in sizes 2-12.  Instead, you'll see specific selections styled by one size.  The goal here is to inform shoppers via pictures of the clothes on models of different body types and sizes to give customers a visual of how it will actually look on them.  I don't know of another company doing this type of thing, at such reasonable prices.  Website MyShape.com helps shoppers select clothes by body type, but the prices are nowhere near as low as 365Hangers.   I had the opportunity to see the clothes from 365Hangers today at a fashion/spa event in Santa Monica, and the clothes are actually better looking in person than they are on the website.  Here are a few examples.

Pictured: Model in an Adian Mattox dress, size 6 priced at $93.00 at 365Hangers, retail price $310. (photo: M.Hall)

Pictured: Model in an Aqua Dress from 365Hangers. (photo: M.Hall)
If you're wondering why  I hadn't featured this site here before as a good deal, it's because I hadn't actually seen their merchandise in person. I always try to see the product or buy it myself before I write about it and tell readers that I consider it a good deal.

If you have a favorite designer, you can search for them in your size on the site to save time. The only draw back is that not all designers are available in all sizes.  However, for the prices offered, you can't really expect an unlimited selection.  After all, these are sample sale prices, so quantities will be limited, as they would be at a brick and mortar store.  My advice: bookmark 365Hangers.com and keep the site on your watch list. I think they have a winning value proposition, clothing priced right and sized to fit the shapes shown on their website.

NOTE: I am not a 365Hangers affiliate, and I don't haven't received any compensation from them for writing this post.

The Recessionista's Sixth Sense: The Sixth Derek Lam Dress for eBAY

Pictured: Almost as rarely sighted as a UFO is the sixth dress Derek Lam designed for eBay.
For some time, I've been looking for the above pictured Derek Lam dress on eBay with no luck.  I saw a picture of the dress in a note from eBay fashion showing off the dress on the screen of the eBay iPhone/iPod touch application.  But here's what I didn't know, until I did a few Google CIA type searches.  There is a sixth Derek Lam eBay dress in the collection (pictured above), but it is ONLY available for order via the eBay Fashion iPhone/iPod touch app.   This sixth dress is also the lowest priced dress in the collection, priced at $125.00 US.  That's way better to me than the approximately $300.00 US price tags on the other dresses in the collection.  I also like the cut and style of this dress. To me, it's a bit more sophicated than the maxi dresses in the collection, or the Chemise Dress/ Boho Chic floral print dress.  Here's some info about the dress from the eBay listing:

"The silk tee shirt dress features front placket, 6 hidden smoke shell buttons, hidden cotton cord drawstring waist tie, side seam pockets, topstitched cuffed short sleeves, topstitched detail on dress, and shirt tail side openings."

If you're interested in the dress and you don't have an iPhone or an iPad, allow me to share the link to the dress I found using the eBay Fashion iPhone/iPod touch app. :)  Click here to check out the bargain of the eBay Derek Lam collection, the Pink Silk Tee dress.

This dress is available is sizes 0 to 18 and eBay offers free shipping in the states, and Worldwide shipping at a cost of $19.99 US.  What do you think of the missing dress readers?

Carli Bruni Pregnancy Rumors Confirmed? H&M Shopping Spree

How do you know that the French first lady, Carla Bruni is really pregnant? Well, just check out HM France on Twitter talking about it, followed by French Magazine Voici and now The Hufffington Post. Here's the evidence  @hmfrance  tweeted: "Le magazine "Voici" dévoile le shopping grossesse de Carla Bruni chez H&M :  translated as "Voici magazine reveals Carla Bruni's maternity wear shopping at H&M."  Yes, Mrs. Sarkozy got her shop on at H&M for under $450.00 US and stocked up on supplies.  After all, why spend a fortune on designer threads that you will outgrow in a few weeks or even months.   And besides, H&M Maternity clothes are pretty great.

It's very cool that Madame Sarkozy went shopping herself.  In Europe, shoppers can order H&M online.  She could've stayed home and avoided the media. Go Carla.  Congrats to de future Maman!

Los Angeles: May 20 Grand Opening "The Market " at Santa Monica Place

Pictured: The Welcome Committee at the opening of The Market (photo: M.Hall)
Last night I stopped in at the VIP Opening Party for the new gourmet food mecca, "The Market" at Santa Monica Place (SMP).  Usually, I go to SMP for Fashion finds,  shopping the huge Bloomingdales or the White House Black Market store. However, I also love good food and wine, and in those areas, the new "The Market"  has much to offer.  From a gourmet cooking school to delicious souffles at the new Rockenwagner to amazing flowers at Magical Blooms, "The Market" is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.

Pictured: The fantastic pretzel dress at The Market by Rockenwagner. (photo: M. Hall)

The Market is officially open to the public today, Friday May 20th at 10:00 am, and if you are a foodie, you might want to be there.  If you are a fashionista out shopping, you might want to check it out for some lunch or a break.  Here are some of the highlights I discovered at "The Market.:

  • A Dining Deck, with six eclectic restaurants, including La Sandia, Ozumo, Pizza Antica, Sonoma Wine Garden, Xino and Zengo, and a modern, indoor-outdoor food court – all with ocean and city views.
  • Delicious baked Souffles and homemade breads at the new Rockenwager store.  This is a MUST try.  The manager Matthew exemplifies customer service, and the food is terrific!
  •  Wonderful cheeses, including homemade burrata cheese, at the  Norcino Salumeria Cheese Bar. There are also wonderful European salamis and cured meats.
  • Amazing chocolate at the L’Artisan du Chocolat including sipping chocolate and homemade chocolates with nuts and fruit.
  • Cooking classes at The Gourmandise School of Sweets and Savories.  I didn't get to try the fare, but I saw one of the classes taking place , and it looked like great + delicious fun.
  • Beautiful flower arrangements at Magical Blooms, delicious cookies at The Cookie Guru (served with cold milk if you'd like) and a coffee lover's treat, the amazing Groundworks Coffee.
In short, there is plenty to explore at "The Market."  Today's festivities will feature the world's largest lasagna cutting at the opening ceremony.  If you stop in, be sure to pick up the coupon book for bargains at all the stores.

It's the end of another long hard working week, and that means it's time to give it up to all my readers with some reader appreciation. Monday, May 23, is MORE Magazine's reinvention convention.  Get ready Los Angeles, as more than 600 women from across the country will gather for a day of interactive events, panel discussions, beauty makeovers, shopping, giveaways and more.  Tickets and group discounts are now available at www.more.com/reinvention.  One of the highlights of the convention, at least for me, other than the shopping will be the appearance of Rita Wilson.  She will be speaking on  a panel at lunch on Women in Hollywood Panel along with President of Fox Searchlight Pictures Nancy Utley, Entertainment Tonight/The Insider Executive Producer Linda Bell Blue and Kristin Patrick from William Morris Endeavor.   I meet Rita a few years ago at a private party in LA.  She is once of the nicest women in the entertainment industry.  If you can't make it to LA for the conference, check out the MORE website on Monday. Some of conference will be live streaming on MORE.com.

Supermodel Christy Turlington's film “No Woman, No Cry” will debut at the MORE convention.

Beyond the appearance of Rita and some shopping, one of the convention attractions will be the premiere of a new film by supermodel and activist Christy Turlington. I'm giving away four free tickets to the cocktail reception and screening of Christy's movie.  The tickets are for the Cocktail Reception and Private Film Screening of, “No Woman, No Cry” with Christy Turlington.  Click here to see the trailer.

The film shares the powerful stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world, including a remote Masai tribe in Tanzania, a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States.

But enter quick, because this contest will end Friday, May 20th at midnight PST.  The winners will be notified via email, and their names will be added to the guest list for the Premiere.  To enter, just leave a comment here on the blog saying you want to go along with your email address like so: susan at gmail dot come.

Ideeli's Summer Vacation Deals: Worth a Look!

Some of us plan our summer vacations far in advance, and others of us plan when we can.  I fall into the later category, traveling when I can and when I find a good deal.  I'm sure there are a few of my readers who are looking around for some good deals right now on Summer getaways.  That's why I have to tell you about some the vacation deals on shopping club Ideeli this week. Yes, this week Ideeli's best deals are not on fashion (in my opinion) but on travel. Ideeli travel is featuring deals at a 5-star Las Vegas resort, an eco-friendly escape in Costa Rica, a cool Montauk, NY boutique hotel, a Big Island Hawaii spa retreat, and a coolio West Hollywood hideaway—all at savings of up to 40% off the best rates on other travel sites.  If you're not a member, I'm inviting you to join now and check out the deals!  Click here to go to Ideeli.

Century 21 Online is Open for Business

This is a red level alert for savvy shoppers everywhere, New York shopping behemoth Century 21 is now open for business online.  I was in NYC last weekend, but I missed my trip to Century 21, so naturally, I had to check out the online store on my return. The model for the online store is very similar to shopping on Gilt Groupe or Ideeli.   There are featured designers and specials daily, and you can earn referral bonuses by inviting friends.  Current sales include Converse by John Varvatos, Steve Madden shoes and dresses from Spanish label RAASTA.  Look for Marc by Marc Jacobs coming May 23nd followed by Moods of Norway on May 26th. Just like other online shopping clubs, each sale last two days, and the hot stuff goes quick. To check out the Century 21 sales click here to use my invite to shop.

One thing is for sure, the website is easier to navigate, and less exhausting than the New York City brick and mortar store. But there is also less variety, and fewer styles to choose from.  But stay tuned. I wouldn't be surprised if the site expands and grows just as the brick and mortar stores have.

Viva La Recessionistance! QVC Replicates Marie Antoinette's Earrings

Pictured: QVC's Smithsonian Marie-Antoinette Simulated Diamond Earrings

In the midst of tough economic times, wouldn't we all love to adorn ourselves like a French Queen? QVC thinks so and has been selling a good looking copy of the original cake eater, aka Marie Antoinette's, pear shaped, ginormous earrings.  It just tickles me that in a period of high-unemployment, steep gas prices and extreme couponing,  the remnants of Queen Marie's ostentatious style are selling on the purveyor of all things fashionably and frugally priced, the QVC network.  This week, final quantities of the earrings are now available for just $63.94.   Even more remarkable, 91% of those who have purchased are very satisfied with these over the top gems. Apparently, despite the tough economy, channeling the style of the guillotined Queen is très important. Think of the tragic Queen, she probably wore these for state occasions like balls or presentations at court.  Perhaps a quiet dinner party at Versailles.  But now, everyone can enjoy the style of an aristocrat, perhaps for nothing more than a special party, night out or even trip to the store. Viva La Recessionistance!

Marie Antoinette's earrings are part of QVC's Smithsonian collection.  The collection fascinates me because it features reproductions of jewelry once owned by aristocrats and sometimes deposed royals that cost millions (in today's prices.) But now, in the spirit of fashion equality, anyone can enjoy them.  Check out QVC's Smithsonian Simulated Napoleon Diamond Necklace on sale for a mere $368.00.  The original necklace was a gift from Napoleon to his second wife, Marie-Louise when she gave birth to his much longed for son.  The women of today don't have to endure an arduous pregnancy to secure a dynastic line for their version of these gems, just dial-up QVC.

Would you pay to wear this hat? Princess Beatrice to auction her Royal Wedding Hat

Pictured: Princess Beatrice in her literally "over the top" Royal Wedding hat. (photo: Mark Cuthbert/Abaca)
Did you check out this, er, headdress/hat that Princess Bea wore to the Royal Wedding? Fashion critics were decidedly divided on the merits of Fergie's daugther's chapeau. Some even thought the shape a bit risque resembling a vi-jay-jay (as Oprah and Gail would say.) Now comes word from no less than People Magazine (my personal celeb gossip bible) that Princess Beatrice will be auctioning the hat on eBay to benefit charity.  The source of the rumor is the sometimes reliable influence peddling, Sarah the Duchess of York, aka Fergie.  "She's putting it up on eBay to auction it for UNICEF and for Children in Crisis," Beatrice's mother, Duchess Sarah Ferguson, said yesterday  during appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Even  more fascinating to me than the sale of the hat, and it's surely for a worthy cause, is what price this thing will eventually sell for.  After all, this isn't one of Princess Diana's fairy tale like dresses. I'll be watching for this one via Google Alerts to see when it goes on eBay, and what the bidding is like. I'm still waiting to see the knockoffs, or better yet, the auction of Pippa Middleton's amazing Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress.  Now that would be worth bidding on.

Update : As of May 15th, bidding on the hat on eBay is going strong.  The Princess Beatrice Royal Wedding Hat by Philip Treacy listed for charity has bids for GBP 10,200.00  or approximately US $16,532.16. Someone really wants that bloody hat! :) Wonder if QE II (the Queen is bidding.)  After all, not just  anyone can bid on this treasure, you must be a pre-approved bidder to try to win it!

The Recessionista's Weekend Update

Pictured: Antoni and Alison T-shirt from the Uniqlo collection.

Happy Weekend dear readers! Finally right? I thought this weekend would never get here.  There is a lot going on this week in the world of fashion and frugal finds, so I want to share what's on my radar with you.  Here's my weekend update.

  • Uniqlo has launched their designer invitation project, featuring Costello Tagliapietra, Charlotte Ronson + Vena Cava.  All the items are now in stock at Uniqlo stores.  I'm lusting for the entire series of dresses by Costello Tagliapietra.  They are gorgeous and look much, much more expensive than their $29.99 price tag.  Stay tuned for more from Uniqlo as they have just launched a collection of Antoni + Alison T-shirts that are simply adorable! If you're not in New York, London or Japan you can order by phone by calling Uniqlo customer service, listed on their websites.
  • Kate Winslet has been announced as the new face of St. John knits.  I'm so excited about this one, particularly since Kate is not a model, taking that to mean a size zero.  She looks amazing in the ad preview shots. Kate told Women's Wear Daily this about the ads, "They want to keep it looking like me and not have it look like me pretending to be a model wearing these clothes. I'm obviously not a model. I'm not the size of a model. I don't have the face of a model or the shape of a model."  I don't really agree with that. Kate looks divine in the pictures, and very healthy.
  • The new Alternative Apparel store in Venice, California on Abbott Kinney is having a special today. To celebrate their new collection in store today, if you buy 2 items you get 10% off, if you buy 3 you get 15% off.
  • Ann Taylor Loft has announced special savings at their stores today, via their Facebook page. Stop by a LOFT store today, Saturday, May 14, 2011 for their Summer Style Event and receive an exclusive invitation to enter to win one of FIVE $1000 LOFT shopping sprees.

Today in Los Angeles: The Divorcee Sale

Here's an interesting idea for a sale--get a bunch of women going through or preparing for a divorce together and sell off their stuff.  But not just any Divorcees mind you. This sale is in Los Angeles, so these Divorcees include socialites and Hollywood wives. These are not the women that Tammy Wynette famously wailed about in her country song D-I-V-O-R-C-E.  These are the women that Jackie Collins writes about. So, it stands to reason that their cast-offs, might be fabulous cast-ons for savvy shoppers. The Divorcée Sale  is happening today and runs through tomorrow, May 15th,  at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood.  My spies tell me that there have been sightings of Pucci, YSL, Tory Burch, Lanvin, and my beloved Chanel at last night's VIP preview. According to sale organizer, Jill Alexander, "Prices will range anywhere from $50 to $2500; the average price point in somewhere around $150-250."  That's not bad, but you have to consider the quality of each piece, and not just the designer name.

The last thing you need to know about the sale, is perhaps the most important, a portion of the sale profits will be donated to  a good cause—breast cancer research.  That really makes the sale worthwhile in my humble opinion.  If you go, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

The Gap teams up with Goodwill for a Clothing Drive to give Customers 30% off

Three cheers for The Gap for announcing a partnership with Goodwill to recycle clothing and give customers a 30% shopping discount at their stores.  I love that the Gap is being so "mindful" but I am sad they let go the talented Patrick Robinson.  I hope he lands somewhere fabulous soon where his talents will be appreciated.  Now back to Gap and Goodwill.

Gap and Goodwill have announced a partnership encouraging consumers to clean out their closets for a cause.  From May 19-29, Gap stores in the United States and Canada will accept clothing donations in support of the Donate Movement, an effort powered by Goodwill to educate the public on the positive impacts donations can have on both people and the planet.

Here's how the partnership works. When consumers donate clothing to Gap stores during this time period, their donations will be given to Goodwill Industries and then sold in Goodwill’s more than 2,500 stores. In exchange for their donations,  donors will receive 30-percent off their entire Gap purchase, including regularly priced and sale items, just in time for Memorial Day shopping. I have to use this as an opportunity to clean out my closet by donating old clothes to the will, the Goodwill that is! I also have to check out the Gap and see if any of those dresses and tops clearly baring the Patrick Robinson stamp are worth snatching up for 30% off.  Have you checked out the Gap lately readers? Does anything strike your fancy?

eBay's Derek Lam Collection Now on Sale online and via iPhone App

Derek Lam's collection for eBay is now on sale at eBay, and eBay is pushing hard to get consumers to hit the "buy it now" button.  Adding to all the press and hype on the collection, eBay has launched a new mobile app for the iPhone to lure consumers in.  Will it work? I don't know.  The Lam collection looks good, but most pieces are just under $300.00, which to me at least, is a bit high.   Some of you may recall that Lam  unveiled a ready-to-wear collection of original designs at a presentation during New York Fashion Week in February 2011.

Pictured: The final five, Derek Lam for eBay Collection.

Following are the final selections with prices in US dollars. (pictured above from left to right above.)

  •  The Black Tie Dress – Black cotton poplin black tie evening dress | Price: $275.00
  •  The Boho Dress – Multi-color floral print georgette boho halter dress | Price: $295.00
  •  The Sun Dress – Indigo denim sun dress | Price: $195.00
  •  The Shift Dress – Black cotton poplin shift dress with peplum back | Price: $175.00
  •  The Chemise Dress – Multi-color floral print georgette chemise dress | Price: $225.00
The pieces went on sale on eBay on May 10th.  I really like the innovative idea of crowd-sourcing a designer collection via eBay.   Fashion should be for the end-user, the customer who wears the clothes to select, not the buyer from the department store.  With this collection, there is no doubt that the customers have selected what they want to wear.  I just don't think they wanted it to cost this much :) Wonder if this will go on sale, just like a department store collection?

Two of Princess Diana's Catherine Walker Dresses Sell for $276,000 in Beverly Hills

Pictured: Princess Diana's strapless Catherine Walker recently sold at auction (picture anonymous via USA Today)

Hot off the press from La La Land in the village of Beverly Hills--two dresses worn by Princess Diana have sold for a record $276,000 at an auction in Beverly Hills yesterday   From a news release, Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions, said  that a black crepe evening gown Diana wore during a state visit in 1992 fetched the higher price of $144,000. A light blue strapless gown with accompanying stole sold for $132,000 and was worn on three occasions, including at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.

The dresses were designed by Catherine Walker.   Sadly, the designer Catherine Walker recently died. I'm sure all the recent hype around the royal wedding helped to send the dresses worn by the late people's Princess in the the economic stratosphere.  Remember, Kate Middleton's mother wore Catherine Walker at the recent wedding, in a discreet tribute to the late Princess. While both Catherine Walker's dresses from Diana's wardrobe were exquisite, the style comes from the Princess herself.  The price tag is cheap for all the magic she possessed.

The Recessionista Reviews Daffy's New York

I'm in New York for business this week, so I had to take the opportunity to stop into Daffy's New York on Broadway between 58th and 57th for a little recreational shopping.  A while ago, Daffy's sent me a $50.00 gift certificate and invited me in to review the store.  However, the heavy winter snows prevented me from venturing to NYC until this Spring.  So it's now officially Spring, I'm in NYC and I wondered over to Daffy's.  I have to say, it was pretty good! To my surprise, Daffy's features name brand designers like Calvin Klein, Ellen Tracy,  DKNY and Anne Klein. But most welcome and surprising of their inventory is all the European designers in the store.  You can buy some great European brand at Daffy's and save yourself the airfare.  I saw Yuka, Ambiente (from Germany),  Moschino (Italy), and more.  In addition to clothing, Daffy's features swimwear, handbags, wonderful shoes, and even housewares.  There is clothing for men, women and children.

I have to honestly confess that the last time I stopped into Daffy's was years ago and I thought it was a lot of junk.  This time, I was amazed at how much great stuff there was for prices between $16.00 and $29.00.  Of course, there is still some junk too, so you have to be prepared to invest some time to sift through everything, but for the time spent, the benefits in quality merchandise are great.  I scored two great pairs of comfortable European shoes by Pink Studio and Guore for $29.99 each.  Suggested retail price for the Guore shoes was $210.00, so that was quite a good savings. Among the name brand shoes at Daffy's I spotted were very high end brands like Moschino, Alberta Ferretti and Calvin Klein.

Pictured: Shoes all in a row at Daffy's New York. (picture: M. Hall)
For just over $100.00, I can away with an amazing J Envie Sport Cardigan Sweater, two pairs of leather shoes, and a Yuca two piece sweater set.  I wish I had more time to spend at Daffy's as the values there were really great, especially for the prices.

Pictured: Daffy's delivers great European clothing without the cost of a trip to Europe (picture : M. Hall)
If you live in New York , or are visiting, and you're looking for high-fashion at a low price, set aside some time to visit Daffy's.  It on The Recessionista's Top Picks from now on! Read all review on YELP! and you'll be convinced of what I'm saying--it's worth a trip and some shopping.

Last Call's Twitter contest: Win a $100 gift card

One of the most interesting developments in the world of  Social Media and shopping is the proliferation of brands doing Twitter giveaways in order to gain followers. Hey, I've done it myself for contests I've run here on the blog and I think it's a win for all because it builds community, and helps you finds deals direct from the store.  So here's a heads-up about a contest Last Call by Neiman Marcus is having.   Last Call is hosting a tweetstakes and giving away one $100 gift card every week until June 30th, 2011. To enter the contest  follow Last Call Neiman Marcus on Twitter (@LastCall) and tweet with them Yup, it's that easy!  One tweet and you could be on your way to shopping a new dress, handbag, jewelry shoes, sunglasses and more!

I recently shopped Last Call and got some really high-end pieces, a Lafayette 148  top and black Romeo & Juliet couture slacks for under $100.00. If I had paid retail for the two pieces, it would've been about $300.00.  So do give Last Call a look in store and online.  They offer high quality goods for less than some pieces from Target designer collections.

Coming in Fall 2011: Missoni For Target

Here's some news that I find fairly incredible, and that reflects the changing face of fashion.  Yesterday,  Target announced their next designer via a Tweet from @TargetStyle. Wait for it, the new Target designer will be luxury fashion brand Missoni.  Yes, Missoni of the zigzig sweaters and knit dresses.  According to Target,  the collection will arrive in stores in the fall "September 13 through October 22."   But there's more, the collection will be a be a wide selection of items  offering much more than clothing.   There will be  400-plus Missoni for Target pieces. Like the new Calypso St. Barth Collection and Liberty of London before that, Missoni for Target will offer evrything from clothes (women’s, men’s, kids'), to bed sheets, to  dinnerware to set the table.  Everything will be branded with Missoni’s  trademark swirls, zigzags, and loud printed florals. “It’s been a fantastic experience," says Angela Missoni “one we are eager to share with families across the United States.”

To me this is simply a sign of the times.  Fashion houses are hurting, and budget collections for Target offer a great way to raise some revenue.  Will the average Target shopper know who or what the Missoni brand is? I think not.   We'll see how consumers respond and what type of quality Missoni for Target delivers.
