Real Housewife Alex McCord Supports Fashion for Hope Tonight in NYC!

BREAKING NEWS from The Recessionista Sales' Radar System: Tonight, Wednesday June 29th, modaCYCLE and Lion'esque Media are sponsoring a charity fashion auction to benefit Gilda's Club New York City, hosted by Alex McCord at The Carlton Hotel. If you're in New York City, you might want to check this one out.  Alex McCord is one of the bright spots of the frequently dreadful, always full of cat fighting, Real Housewives of New York City.  This event is to benefit the Cancer Charity sponsored by Gilda's Club, named for comedienne Gilda Radner who lost her heartbreaking  battle with Cancer. If you would like to attend, you may RSVP via the Charity Happenings site up until 2pm EST. Admission at the door without an RSVP will depend on the capacity of the venue.

Dresses are being donated by Nanette Lepore, Charles Nolan, Tracy Reese, Chado Ralph Rucci, Araks, Malan Breton, Loris Diran, Nima Taherzadeh, Kaelen, and Tara St. James. They will be auctioned off during the event, with all proceeds going to support the charity.

Since opening in 1995, Gilda's Club New York City has offered a place where men, women and children living with cancer – and their families and friends – can join together to build social and emotional support as a supplement to medical care.  This is a worthy cause that just happens to offer some great fashion deals too. A winning combination.

Target.com Puts Calypso St. Barth on the Sales Rack

You knew it had to happen.  Calypso St. Barth finally went on sale on Target.com at 30% off of retail. Although it's been on sale in stores for some time, Target.com was still selling the collection for the original list prices on their website.  Seriously silly. Why not reduce in-store and online at the same time don't ya think? Although this collection was well designed with natural fabrics like cotton, linen and silk, consumers balked at the Tar-jay prices. I also think consumers are getting smarter. Buyers  are not going to jump any more at these budget designer collections, because there are simply too many of them.

Pictured : Big savings on Calypso St. Barth on their website.

If you are a fan of Calypso St. Barth check out the sample sale on their website. The price point on the sample sale is pretty close to some of the Target sale prices. Use the code SAMPLESALE to save even more. No wonder Target had to finally reduce their website prices.  Stay tuned,  the prices may still continue to drop...I have a feeling.

Girl Power: DKNY PR Girl Starts a Tumblr Blog

Forget about @LadyGaga, Guess Who Is The Real News On @Tumblr Today?? @DKNY!!!! #Tumblr #Fashion

dknyprgirl:

In case my blog’s tag line isn’t self-explanatory, I am a born and bred Twitter girl. So you might be asking yourself why now Tumblr? Don’t get me wrong, I’m really appreciative to Twitter for giving me 140 characters per tweet (really I have never edited copy so well), but once upon a time, some of my Twitter friends suggested that I start a blog. My initial reaction was oh sure, give me yet another place I have to check & thought purge in. But as I contemplated starting one, I realized that I might really enjoy having more than 140 characters to play with. So think of this blog as me powered by a ‘Grande’ skinny vanilla latte instead of a ‘Tall’. Go ahead, take a chance and RSS me (that means kiss me in Digital).  I am sure every post won’t be perfect, but you can bet my outfits are pretty close…
xo, DKNY PR GIRL

The Tweeps were buzzing today about a new Blogger in the Fashion World.  I'm talking about one of my favorite Tweeple, the elusive, anonymous and absolutely hilarious DKNY PR girl.  You can read her new blog at: http://dknyprgirl.tumblr.com. Forget about @LadyGaga, Guess Who Is The Real News On @Tumblr Today?? @DKNY!!!! #Tumblr #Fashion

I'm looking forward to following her adventures and learning more about DKNY deals from her. Not to mention being entertained. And forced to laugh out loud as I read her fashion prose.

PS: For deals on DKNY this week, check out the Macy's sale.

The Recessionista's Cheap and Cheerful Vino Picks for the Long Fourth of July Weekend

Pictured: Bring on the Reds! (photo: M. Hall)
It's only a few more days until the long weekend.  But whose counting the days? Well me of course! I can't wait to kick back, enjoy some BBQ and some great wines. I bet some of you are feeling the same way. We all need a little chillification, and what's better than a cheap and cheerful bottle of wine.  Recently, I attended a great tasting event courtesy of McCormick and Schmick in Beverly Hills and Learn About Wine.  I really think a special spot on the McCormick & Schmick patio needs to be reserved for The Recessionista.  There's no better spot to watch designer fashions (Louie Wanton aka Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes, Tiffany's and more) , people watch and sip great reasonably priced wines at their Happy Hour during the summer. It's a cheap and cheerful delight, click here to see their menu.

If you haven't heard of Learn About Wine, it's a great way to take a wine tasting class, have some fun and enjoy some wines that you may not be familiar with.  Look for discounts on Learn About Wine via Gilt City Los Angeles and Groupon.  Classes are taught by wine educator Ian Blackburn. Ian holds a black belt in the art of wine. More important, his classes and special dinners celebrate great wines and introduce attendees to not only new flavors but new people.  There's a great social aspect of fun to each class.  So, if you want to explore some good wine, and some food pairings too, do check out Learn About Wine.

Pictured:  A fine selection of Oregon and Washington State Wines.

Now, here are some fabulous wines that I discovered from Oregon and Washington State.  The cooler climates there are perfect for growing full bodied and flavorful Pinot Noirs.  Here's my pick list.

Cougar Crest  "Anniversary Cuvee."   This wine, priced at $32.00, delivers big flavor at a reasonable price.  Fittingly, wine maker Deborah Hansen named this wine for her own Anniversary celebration. The “Anniversary Cuvee” is a delicious blend of  Merlot, Cabernet Savignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot.  The cooler temperatures in the Walla Walla River in Washington State provide the perfect climate and soil for the amazing Estate Merlots and magnificent Cabernet France from this small winery. If you like reds, you will want to check out Cougar Crest's current special on free shipping when you order six bottles.

Artisanal Wine Cellars  "Pinot Noir 2008."  This small winery (they make only 2,000 cases per year) produces an amazing 2008 Pinot Noir grown in the Chehalem Mountains of Oregon. Wine maker, Tom Feller buys his grapes from local farms.  He attributes the volcanic based soil and his "small batch practices" to the rich flavor of Artisanal's Pinor Noir.  The flavor is a burst of berries with a hint of spice/cinnamon.  Besides being delicious, the wines are reasonably priced.  Their Pinots range from $20.00 to $34.00 depending on the year.

WildAire Cellars, Pinot Noir Willamette 2008.  This is a wine I would never have found on my own, because the wine maker only makes 800 cases per year.   Because so little is produced, the wine maker Matt Driscoll, told me there is a "secret ingredient in the mix-- love." I can't describe this one better than the tasting notes, "Deep flavors of juicy cherries, dark chocolate, cloves, and vanilla, evolve into an incredibly long and beautiful finish.  Try this wine with grilled lamb or salmon."   You'll have to special order this one, but it's worth it I promise.

Alexandria Nicole  "Quarry Butte" Alexandria Nicole's delicious blend of Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc/Malbec/ Syrah is priced at a mere $20.00 per bottle and it's well worth it. There are flavors of dark berries merged with "hints of cedar and elegant oak-spice."   Check the winery's website for distributors.

My last recommendation for Summer vacation wine tasting and BBQs is from Santa Barbara's Bridlewood Winery and although, it was not on the Learn About Wine menu, I recently discovered it and have to share this great value.

Bridlewood Winery, Blend 175. Look for their delicious Blend 175 in grocery stores in California like Vons' and Ralph's priced from $12.00 to $15.00.  And despite its low price tag, Robert Parker scores the 2009 Blend 175 at 89 points "Abundant black currant fruit notes intermixed with hints of white chocolate, pepper and earth. It is a spicy, delicious, endearing, medium-bodied red with exuberant fruit as well as a boisterous personality."

Special Discount on Giorgio Armani Cosmetics from MORE Magazine

One of the hottest tickets at the recent MORE Reinvention Conference was the Giorgio Armani Cosmetics area with the free makeovers.  The area was packed all day.  If you weren't lucky enough to attend the conference, I wanted to share with you the special discount from MORE for  a deal on Giorgio Armani make-up.  Enter the code MOREGAB at checkout on giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com and enjoy 10 percent off plus complimentary shipping on your order. This offer is valid through June 30, 2011.  If you have make-up that is over a year old, this is a good time to perhaps restock. Make-up doesn't get better with age, instead it can house bacteria and become a breeding ground for all kinds of nasty stuff. Check out Sonia Kushak's excellent blog post on how long to keep various make-up items.  According to Sonia,  "When in doubt, through it out."

The Recessionista Reviews Ross + a $50.00 Gift Card giveaway

Pictured: Den of Deals, Ross in Culver City, CA
The PR team at Ross Dress for Less recently called me up and asked me to stop in their fine stores and check out the selection. They also offered me a $50.00 gift card, which I will be giving away to one lucky reader at the end of this post. So read on :)

Pictured: Jones New York at Ross Dress for Less.
I hadn't been into Ross for awhile before they contacted me.  I hadn't shopped there for a number of reasons.  First, most of the stores are really large in terms of square footage and it takes me a long time to sort through the wares to find values.  Second, I hadn't found great savings in the past on name brand fashions.  I'm pleased to say, that Ross has changed their stock and it's now full of treasures, although it might still take you awhile to find them.   I checked out the big Ross store on Venice in Culver City and found brands like Calvin Klein, Jones New York, Juicy Couture, Romeo and Juliet Couture, and Max Studio.  Of course there is still some junk too, but if you are willing to spend a little time, there digging, it's well worth while.  In addition to the clothes, there are some great housewares, furnishings, handbags, cosmetics, luggage and all kinds of little accessories to help organize your jewelery and clothing.  There is a dizzying  array of name brand cosmetics/skincare items, cooking utensils and even designer aprons for cooking.

Pictured : Vintage Aprons at Ross for the fashionable cook.
Pictured : Designer Handbags at Ross.
My final Ross tip is this, check out the jewelry counter and be sure to ask someone for assistance. You'll need to carefully inspect items from the case to make sure they are in top condition.  I found this amazing Juicy Couture ring, that reminds me of a Chanel Camellia  flower design.

Pictured : My favorite Ross Deal , this Juicy Couture Flower Ring.
Bottom line, Ross does deliver fashion deals and more, but it's not a quick trip.  I would recommend at least hour for a Ross shopping expedition. It will take that long to ferret out fashionable savings. Check Yelp and Yahoo reviews to find the best Ross in your local area.  Some stores have better stock than others.

Now to our Giveaway! I'm giving away a $50.00 Ross Gift Card to one lucky reader.  Simply leave me a comment or send me a TWEET telling me what your favorite deal is at Ross, or if you haven't shopped there, what you might look for there.    This contest will end at midnight PST on July 5th. Brands that Won't Survive 2012: American Apparel and Sears?

Pictured: An American Apparel Store,  Photo:  John Makely  msnbc.com file

Every year 24/7 Wall St. creates a list of brands that will disappear, meaning, they are going out of business in big way.  Puff! They are about to disappear.  That image reminds me of the wicked witch melting in the Wizard of Oz.  This year's list of sinking brands includes Sears, Sony Pictures, American Apparel, Nokia, Saab, A&W All-American Foods Restaurants, Soap Opera Digest, Sony Ericsson, MySpace, and Kellog's Corn Pops.  Upon reading this story, my first thought was, wait, what about the Kardashians bringing fashion to Sears?   Does this mean that a mass produced line of celebrity labeled fashion probably made in China or India won't be able to rake in profits? I'd actually be glad to see that.  However, I'm sad for Sears that they are on this list, although fashion may not be their strongest suit, they certainly do deliver consumer value with brands like Kenmore.

And what about American Apparel? Their stores are all over here in Southern California. According to 24/7, "the once-hip retailer, reached the brink of bankruptcy earlier this year, and there is no indication that it has gained anything more than a little time with its latest financing. " Sadly, I haven't seen anything lust-worthy over at American Apparel since Jennifer Hudson wore one of their dresses on her album cover.  I think the brand is simply being eclipsed by the proliferation of budget designer lines in the market from folks like Target and even Walmart's Norma Kamali.  Maybe they should look at being a brand within a retail store, rather than a stand alone store brand.  What do you think readers? Do you buy American Apparel? I'd like to see them stick around because they are made in the US, and there are so few brands especially in fashion, that provide jobs to Americans.

As for the failure of MySpace, that's not really much of a surprise. MySpace was once the top social media networking sites and it was one of the first in market.  It seems that Facebook passed them long ago, but I feel bad for the customers who have created strong communities on MySpace. It's time for them to start thinking about their migration strategy now.

Consumer Study: Are you ready for a "Mobile Wallet" on your Cell Phone?

Many researchers and savvy shoppers believe that Mobile shopping will be the next big wave of consumer spending.  This means you'll be shopping and buying from your mobile phone using new Apps just for shopping.  Some of you are probably early adopters, and are already shopping from your phone.  But how do you pay for goods when you shop on your mobile? That's the purpose of a new study that offers some surprising findings.  A recent Pulse study from Retrevo, a shopping and review site specializing in consumer electronics, surveyed consumers about their shopping habits and uncovered some interesting results.  The survey asked customers about the idea of a mobile wallet, and who they would want to provide such a thing.  Now, some of you may ask, what exactly is a mobile wallet?  Good question! The concept of the mobile wallet is that you could have all the stuff you usually keep in your backpocket on handbag, like a  bus pass, library card, insurance cards or ID, on your cell phone.  That would reduce the amount of paper that you would have to carry around, and for some of use, that would reduce handbag bulk. Mobile Wallets would work  using NFC ie: Near Field Communication.  NFC puts a chip in devices, like cell phones, that makes it possible to, not only to use your phone to make purchases in a store, but ultimately replace other pieces of paper you carry in your wallet.

So, back to the survey.  Retrevo asked cell phone owners what company they would trust to provide a mobile wallet:
  • 36% Said Google
  • 33% Said Apple
  • 32% Said Visa, Master Card or American Express
  • 26% Said AT&T, Verizon or their cell phone carrier
  • 33% Said none of the above
Google and Apple were top rated choices for mobile shopping. I don't know if the study asked about Windows as a choice for the mobile wallet, but it's certainly something Microsoft could deliver on their Windows phone.

Other study findings:
- 40% of iPhone owners are the most likely to want NFC (mobile wallet) compatibility in their next cell phone, compared with Android owners (24%)
- 75% of people over age 50 were not at all interested in a phone with a mobile wallet
- Men are more interested in a mobile wallet (27%) than women (15%).

I'm not surprised that Men are more interested in a mobile wallet.  That's because I don't think that Men really enjoy shopping at all. They want to do a quick hit and run buy. Women still want to go to stores and try things on.  However, I do think Women want to know where the deals are.  There are many shopping apps on the iPhone just for this purpose and Windows Phone Marketplace has a shopping app for tracking sales.   What do you think readers? Are you ready for a mobile wallet that you can keep on your phone?

Sneak Peak: Pictures of Versace for H&M

Pictured: A colorful print dress under the watchful eye of H&M's Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor.
Just in-- a few sneak peak pictures of Versace for H&M.  I'm posting pictures of  some of the women's dresses and the menswear so you can get the full 411.  See what you think readers. These are truly vintage Versace looks.  I expect the usual lines at H&M and quick sell-out.

Pictured: Versace for H&M sheath dress with studs.

Donatella modeled the above studded sheath dress at a recent runway show to stir up the excitement.  Very smart marketing by the House of Versace.

Red Hot! Versace for H&M Coming this Fall

Picture: Designer Donatella Versace wearing Versace for H&M  (photo courtesy of H&M)
Donatella is coming! Donatella is coming! You don't need to be Paul Revere to sound this fashion cry! Yes, darlings, I'm talking about Donatella Versace (the designer who is sometimes the butt of unflattering portrayals on SNL.) H&M has just announced that Versace will be their latest Fall collection. I have no words. But wait, I found some words, er, questions really.  Will they (the House of Versace) Will they produce the Hollywood Bling and Zing the brand is known for (think J. Lo and Liz Hurley's safety pin dress) or more mainstream pieces? Only a fashion fortune teller or Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M over in Sweden knows for sure.

Pictured: Donatella at H&M supervising a fitting

Here's what my spies tell me.  You can expect lots of leather, print, and colour in Versace for HM at affordable prices. The collection will include lines for women, men and selected pieces for the home (move over Missioni for Target).  The line will be available on 17 November in around 300 stores worldwide, plus...wait for it... on-line too.  I can hear the crash of the web server now :)  In addition, Donatella Versace has also designed a pre-spring collection for H&M which will be exclusively available in countries with H&M on-line sales from January 19, 2012.  Wow. It's Versace for H&M Part Deux before we even see Part One.  The sequel is already in the works, so they expect it to be big.

Donatella, please call The Recessionista hotline! We need to know if Madonna will be the face of Versace for H&M.

Target Announces New Designer Partnerships: Hat designer Albertus Swanepoel + jewelry designer Dana Kellin

Pictured: Wire wrapped earrings by LA Jewelry Designer Dana Kellin
The folks at Target keep signing up new designers all the time.  Next up are Hat designer Albertus Swanepoel and  jewelry designer Dana Kellin. South African-born milliner Albertus Swanepoel has been a constant in the fashion world since 2004, when he began collaborating with several prominent New York designers. His Target  collection will feature 14 colorful women’s hats, each priced at $19.99.

“I’ve enjoyed partnering with Target and translating my hand-crafted designs into a more affordable line,” said Albertus Swanepoel. “The collection is inspired by my South African heritage and features seasonal colors, leopard print and an array of fashionable trims.”

Los Angeles-based luxury designer Dana Kellin is widely recognized for pioneering the trend of wire-wrapped jewelry (see the picture above. )  Her Target range will be priced from $9.99 to $49.99 and includes an assortment of delicate necklaces and earrings.

“My collection for Target mirrors my distinctive wire-wrapping technique that is seen in my handcrafted jewelry,” said Dana Kellin. “By partnering with Target, I’m able to bring my jewelry to a much wider audience, while maintaining the quality of my designs.”

Both collections will be available for a limited-time beginning Oct. 30, 2011 at most Target stores and Target.com.  Congrats to both designers for landing these deals and going mass-market.  I'll be anxious to see their designs at Target, and of course review them.

Alert UK Recessionistas and London Touristas! The Harrods Sale is On!

Gemma Arterton Opens The Harrods Summer Sale 2011 (photo: Steve Finn)

Yesterday, British actress Gemma Arterton opened the Harrods Summer Sale. “Harrods has always been one of my favourite  London stores, so I’m thrilled they invited me along to open the best sale in the world. " said Ms. Arterton.  So, ladies and gentleman, all I can say now is get ready, get steady – shop!”  Excuse me Gemma, that's kind of a no brainer--who doesn't love Harrods? I shop there whenever I am in the UK, I just don't like the prices. The sale is is the only way to shop this store, as it helps to defray some of the shopping costs.

I love going to Harrods when in the UK , if only to browse, and then have lunch in the amazing food hall and pick up all my English foodie treats and teas.  So if you're reading from the UK, or if you are a tourist in London, here are all the sale details.  I have sent out one of my scout recessionistas to the sale this week, and I hope he can handle it.  But this particular scout is a "boy" so he might not be able to really shop it, especially since he is in London for business.  I'll have to turn to my fav UK blogger 00oo00 to get the "juju" or 411 on the sale.

Pre-Owned Designer Deals: Chanel and Armani

Pictured: Pre-owned Chanel on sale at Ideeli today.
In my constant search for the very best for less, I have to let you all know about some good deals I have recently come across on high-end fashions from two of my favorite design houses.   There are so many  poorly made, cheap celebrity fashion lines flooding the market now, with an endless parade of  budget fashion collections coming to big box stores, that I find the quality in general is deteriorating. In many cases, it is far better to invest my hard earned dollars in what I call "pre-owned"  or from my optimistic view point, "pre-loved",  high-end designers.  The overall quality is better as are the fabrics.  If you enjoy for quest of luxury for less, do check out online shopping club Ideeli's sale this weekend on pre-owned Chanel  handbags, jewelry, belts,  dresses and more.  Some of the prices are still quite high, but they are a fraction of the price of Chanel retail.  If you don't already belong to Ideeli, click here to join using my invite to shop.

Pictured: The Beit T'shuvah Thrift Shop in Culver City, CA. (picture: M. Hall.)

Another high-end designer that I am continually searching and lusting for is Giorgio Armani. Armani is quite simply exquisite and I find the tailoring exceptional and uniquely flattering. Recently, I found a new source for Vintage Armani. Wait for it....it's hiding in a non-descript thrift store in Culver City right across the street from Sony Pictures at the Beit T'shuvah Thrift Shop on Washington Boulevard.  If you live in Los Angeles, or are visiting, put this place on your hit list.  This store is full of great designer finds, and many vintage Armanis.  I snapped up a Giorgio Armani black jacket for a mere $35.00 US as well as an elegant Armani Collection black cocktail dress for $30.00.  The condition of both items was pristine, and I wonder if they came from the movie studio across the street.  Check out the picture below of one of the lovely summer vintage Armani jackets from the shop.

Pictured: An Armani jacket on sale for about $30.00  (picture: M. Hall.)

Beit T'shuvah Thrift Shop features a whole designer section full of items from St. John, Armani, Donna Karan and other high-end designers.  If you have the time to shift through the large store inventory, do check it out. It takes time to separate the good stuff from the junk, but it's very worthwhile.  At the right thrift or vintage shop, your $35.00 can actually buy a wonderful designer piece, rather than a celebrity labeled piece of junk passed off as fashion.

Robert Verdi's Ultimate Father's Day Gift Guide. Really? I wonder...

Robert Verdi's Ultimate Father's Day Gift Guide from Robert Verdi on Vimeo.

If you're still shopping for Dad, you might want to take a quick second to watch stylist Robert Verdi's 8 great finds under $100.  In this video gift guide Robert Verdi makes gifts suggestions like Snapfish custom photo gifts, HeadBlade Sport Father's Day Kit, Brookstone Spy Pen, PatchNYC candle, Flywheel Sports spinning classes, BluePrintCleanse Juice 'Til dinner and the Sculptees T-Slim. The video also features designer shades ( wonder if they are the same one Robert wears on his head) and the brand new tech product the HP TouchPad starting at $499.

Not that I really care what celebs will be getting for Father's Day, but Mr. Verdi does! His Father's Day Gift Guide video features his gift picks for 10 celebrity Dads even Charlie Sheen!  Because you know Charlie's kids really want to get him something #winning, right? You might want to give this video a look just for the sheer entertainment value of it.  After you watch this video, which is not intended to be humorous, tell me if your Dad or Husband really wants a "Juice Tell Dinner cleanse" a candle, or er Carrea Sunglasses.  I don't know about some of these choices for Dad quite honestly.  Especially the  Sculptees T-Slim. Seriously. Would you buy that for your kids to give their Dad?  Personally, my Dad is not vain enough to wear a girdle type undershirt or starve himself on upscale juices.  My Dad wants to watch sports games on a BIG screen TV, get an iPhone, Windows Phone or an Android, and eat the biggest steak on the planet.  Pizza and hot dogs are also acceptable. Juice cleanse? Well, not so much. I'm not sure my Dad knows what that is.  He thinks a cleanse is about taking a shower after mowing the yard in the summer. But only after my mother screams at him to turn the game off :)

With all the buzz around the new iPad2 and the Blackberry Tablet, I do find the choice of the lower priced HP Touch Pad interesting.  The HP Touch Pads are probably in stock and orderable, whereas the iPad2s are not.  For more reality based Father's Day Gift suggestions, check my guide, based on things my Dad actually told me he wants.

The Kardashians Launch another Fashion Franchise with Sears: In Stores in August

The Kardashians are coming to Sears in August with a fashion collection. Surprised huh?  Well, you shouldn't be if you believe Kim's statements on her blog that they have always shopped at Sears and love it.  Right, that must be that big Sears store over in Beverly Hills, right? :) The line was announced back in Jan, but now it's getting ready to move to the Sears racks. Their incredible reality franchise continues to branch out by invading America's shopping heartland Sears and Roebuck. Amazing. My great grandmother bought clothes at Sears during the depression, and now, I can buy clothes from the Kardashians at Sears during the recession. How ironic is that?  But I'm sure the Kardashian line won't be offering simple house dresses.  A promotion page is now on the Sears website, so you can sign up and get all the details when they are available.

Pictured: No it's not a canteen with fringe! It's a K-Dash  for QVC bag from the Kardashians avec fringe and chain.
Personally, I don't agree that the triple K franchise is the apotheosis of fashion.  I wasn't bowled over by the previous Kardashian collection at Bebe, but there were a few good looking cocktail dresses that may have worked for you if you had the figure or daring to wear the thigh-high skirts.  To me the current K-Dash for QVC line is less good looking than the Bebe collection, and of course a lot less sexy.  It's also not cheap. There are so many amazing upscale, quality designer deals at Loehmann's and other retailers, that I'm not sure why consumers would want to pay over $100.00 for Kardashian fashions made in China with synthetic fabrics.  I expect the Sears collection to offer more of the same. Which begs the point, how many Kardashian inspired fashion lines, or reality TV shows for that matter,  do we need?   I'd hate to see any more of the K-DASH by Kardashian Lamb Leather Fringe Crossbody Bags on the market with a retail price of $133.00 (no on sale for approx $60.00).  I don't know if bringing the Kardashians to Sears will revamp Sears fashion.  What do you think?

I'm more impressed with another fashion line by a group of sisters in the entertainment industry.  Check out Elizabeth and James from the Olsen sisters on sale at website Tobi this week.

Fashion and the Webby Awards: Geek Chic

Pictured: Anna Wintour and Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe at the Webby Awards.
When they first started, before they were hailed as the Oscars of the Internet, the Webby Awards were perhaps thought of as the ultimate Geek fest.  But now more.  Now the Webby Awards are one of the hottest tickets in the entertainment industry with major print media in attendance to cover.  There's even a red carpet preceding the festivities. The night just didn't belong to the Geeks last night, it was shared with the chic.  None other than Vogue's Anna Wintour graced the festivities to pick up the award for the "People's Voice for Fashion." Ironic as most People aspire to not only listen to the voice of Vogue, but also have her fashion budget. Picking up the award, the Vogue Editor in Chief said, "Sometimes geek can be chic."  Yes, in this digital age, it's more like geek is the new chic.

Also honored with a Webby last night for "Best Fashion Website" was the unique site Nowness. I like Nowness for both it's cheeky sense of humor and cool pictures.  The site is all about luxury, but it's great window shopping and good for a laugh. Especially the pampered pet stuff :)  The Nowness five word acceptance speech was a winner. "Nowness is the new black." Congrats to Nowness for such an impressive achievement and their win against more established players in the web space for fashion.

Finding Sarah Puts the Duchess of York Back in Fashion

Pictured: Sarah, the Duchess of York finds fashion. (photo: Danielle Levitt, courtesy Harper's Bazaar.)
As Oscar Wilde once said, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York is proof of that.  Like a phoenix, Sarah Ferguson is rising from the flames of her recent scandal to broker access to Prince Andrew in a new reality TV show on the Oprah network called Finding Sarah. What a tremendous second act for this recently disgraced Duchess.  Even more intriguing to me is Sarah's recent fashion spread in Harper's Bazaar. I love seeing a 51 old woman who has struggled publicly with her weight in a fashion spread in Harper's looking hot and haute. Click here to see the interview with Harper's and Sarah's fashion spread. The formerly ridiculed "Duchess of Pork" is having the last laugh in my opinion. She looks amazing.

Vintage Vogue: Everything Old is New Again

Pictured: A Beautiful Beaded Sweater on Sale at GlamAMOR.
Recently I had the opportunity to attend a great Vintage show in downtown Los Angeles called A Current Affair. There were some amazing finds on display that I want to share and let my readers know about.  And fortunately for you, dear reader, both of these finds have online stores. First, check out GlamAMOR in downtown Los Angeles and on Esty

Pictured: Owner Kimberly Truhler models her vintage dresses from GlamAMOR.
The owner, Kimberly Truhler,  has a great eye for beautiful beaded sweaters and brightly colored simple shift dresses.  This summer season seems to be all about color, and the timing is perfect for gorgeous teals, hot pinks and brilliant blues.  Kimberly acquires clothing from the 1950s and 1960s and most of it is in immaculate condition. Whether you live in Los Angeles, or shop online, you'll want to give GlamAMOR a look.

Pictured: This dress screams old Hollywood, from Debutante Clothing.
Another fashion find you'll want to check out is Debutante Clothing. Owner Sandra Mendoza Daly has an amazing eye and scours estate sales and auctions to bring customers incredible garments. The black dress about with the fur trim reminds me of an Adrian I saw once in a fashion book.  Check out Debutante Clothing online and at local shows in Los Angeles to take advantage of fabuless finds.  Sandra offers prices that are substantially less than some of the more upscale vintage shops in Beverly Hills and on La Brea. I keep hoping that she will turn up some more Irene treasures for me to buy.

My final Vintage tip is eBay.  I have a habit of regularly searching for items from the old Bullocks-Wilshire store. That particular search usually produces amazing finds.  If you have a vintage shopping tip, please leave a comment here and share. C'mon now, don't be selfish :)

Designer Lela Rose Releases Dress Collection for the LOFT

Designer Lela Rose is well-known for her upscale women's line and bridal collection sold at stores like Neiman Marcus.   Now she is the latest designer to enter the budget ranks of lower-priced clothing with a capsule collection of dresses on sale exclusively at the LOFT.  The collection includes three dresses  priced at $98.00 and one dress with beading priced at $118.00.  The designs are rather minimalistic including a strapless white linen shift dress and a simple floral dress.  Lela Rose for LOFT is sized for mass marketing with a range of sizes from 0 to 18 to appeal to many shapes and sizes.

Lela Rose previously did a collection of shoes for Payless, but this is her first partnership with a retailer to produced lower-priced garments. I'll be interested to see how this line sells.  I think the market is becoming over crowded with designers for less and the collections are loosing their distinctiveness and exclusivity.  Witness Calypso St. Barth, already reduced by 30% off at Target, because it hasn't sold as quickly as planned.  Matthew Williamson and Kinder are also on sale at your local Macy's.  I think buyers are starting to wait for these collections to go on sale to buy them, knowing that is they wait it out, retailers will have to drop the prices to move the garments out of inventory.

Loehmann's is having a buy one get one for 50% off deal that is on The Recessionista's Radar system for Father's Day savings.  Have you noticed how when you go to buy a gift for any one,  you inevitably also end up shopping for yourself too? It's one of the pitfalls of shopping I think.

With Father's Day coming next weekend (June 19th), now is the time to check this deal out at a Loehmann's near you! :)  I am going today, because there is just a week left to get Dad a gift and then get it into the mail.

Summer Swim Suits : New Kamali at Walmart and Amazon Swim Shop

Pictured: The Latest Norma Kamali for Walmart One Piece suits
More mysterious than Sarah Palin's retelling of Paul Revere's historic ride, and perhaps more confusing, is trying to find out when Walmart will carry the amazing $20.00 Norma Kamali swimsuits. Let's discuss.   The NK suits at Walmart are pretty amazing, especially for the price and they are just now back in stock.   There are several one piece suits, including a keyhole bandeau and one shoulder maillots. There are also several tankinis in both prints and solids.  If you're looking for a great and affordable summer suit, check out NK at Walmart.com.  It's best to order online because, sightings of Norma Kamali in a Walmart Brick and Mortar store are becoming as rare as UFO sightings.  Why this has happened, I frankly don't understand.  The swimwear seems to sell out every season with little or no marketing. If you're looking to spend a little more on a Swimsuit, check out Norma Kamali's $98.00 high-end swimsuit Halter Bill swimsuit on her website at NKCollection for $98.00

Pictured: Amazon's Swim Shop offer suits for women, men, kids and even babies!
And speaking of spending a little more for your suit, StyleList is working in cooperation with Amazon.com for the 30 Days of Swim Sweepstakes. So, you might want to check out this contest to try to get lucky and score some swimsuit cash. Here's the deal, for the next 30 days consumers can enter for a chance to win a $150 Gift Card that they can use to purchase swimwear in the Amazon.com Swim Shop or towards millions of items on Amazon.com.  I really like the Amazon Swim Shop, they have a great variety of suits displayed by body type, including Pear, Apple, Small Busted and other shapely varietals.  They also offer everything from designer suits to slimming Miracle Suits.  The shop is definitely worth a look.

For a chance to win or to learn more about the sweepstakes, visit http://www.stylelist.com/30daysofswim/. I already entered! :)

Lulu Guinness to Collaborate with Uniqlo on a Line of T-Shirts

Pictured: A Lulu Guinness bag that may soon be a Tee!
When a favorite designer of mine announces that they will soon be making something affordable, my ears perk up! Yes, darlings, high-end handbag designer Lulu Guinness is about to partner with Uniqlo to make a line of T-shirts. This scoop was reported by our blogger chums at Fashionista.com.

I'm excited about this news for a few reasons.  One is I have been addicted to Lulu's handbags because of their witty sayings like "Put on Your Pearls Girls" and "The World is Your Oyster", however, I had to stifle my addiction because the bags are so pricey.  But the purchase of a T-shirt brings new affordable possibilities.  Lulu's bags retail for about $300.00 US, I expect the Tees to be under $30.00 US, although no details have been announced.  Uniqlo, please get eCommerce enabled on your  US website so we can all enjoy the forthcoming collection.   I barely got my Uniqlo Antoni & Alison Tee before long distance ordering was discontinued.  That ain't right! Uniqlo, please call The Recessionista hotline and share your plan for US eCommerce.  Operators are standing by :)

Christy Turlington's No Women No Cry Film, from Top Model to Film Auteur

2011-06-08-mhall-ctatmore.jpg
Pictured: Christy Turlington on stage at the More Reinvent conference with Nancy O'Dell and More Editor Lesley Jane Seymour. (photo: M. Hall)

Christy Turlington is one of the most recognizable faces in the fashion industry.  She has modeled for Calvin Klein and Maybelline Cosmetics. But soon, she may be the face of a more serious issue. That issue is maternal health care. Although I usually talk about deals and shopping here on The Recessionista, every now and then fashion and serious issues do collide.  In this instance, Christy Turlington is flexing her fashion clout to put the spotlight on an important issue. She appeared at the recent More Reinvent conference in Los Angeles to discuss and show her documentary, "No Women No Cry." To say that the documentary is an eye opener is an understatement. In this day and age we don't think that any woman would walk five miles to a hospital to get medical care to deliver a baby. Or that a woman would go to a hospital and not be able to deliver a baby because there is no doctor on staff who can perform a C-section or deal with pregnancy complications. But these are the types of stories that "No Women No Cry" shows. The film presents that shocking fact that every 90 seconds a woman dies from complications of pregnancy. Even more shocking, 90% of the deaths are preventable.

Look for showings of "No Women No Cry" on the Oprah OWN Network.  If you have the opportunity, do tune in to see this rare and interesting look at a subject that is not discussed often enough. To learn more about maternal health care, visit Ms. Turlington's foundation Every Mother Counts online. The foundation is a continuation of the work of the film, to show viewers and organizations how to organize to make a difference. "When people feel something, when they see a film, " notes Ms. Turlington, 'You need to help them figure out what to do about it." With her film, Ms. Turlington is definitely helping women figure out what to do about this issue.

Announcing Josie Natori for Target via Twitter!

I'm beginning to think that Twitter is becoming as important a PR tool for some (not all designers) as Women's Wear Daily or Vogue!  In the age of social media designers don't need press releases or splashy media kits to tell the world about their latest plans.  Check out the recent announcement by designer Josie Natori that she will be the next designer entering the Target "Budget Brigade", or maybe it's bra-gade in Josie's case.

"I am pleased to announce #JosieNatoriforTarget collection launching in Oct! Beautiful bras, panties, sleep, loungewear, chemises and camis!" said designer Josie Natori via her Twitter.  Love how she included the socially savvy hashtag #JosieNatoriforTarget in her Tweet!  There will be two installments of Josie's east west sensibility at your local Tarjay.  The retailer's first limited-edition lingerie and lounge wear collection, Josie Natori for Target, will be available at most Target stores and on Target.com in two installments. The holiday collection will be in stores from October 30, 2011 to December 25, 2011. The second installment will be available from January 1, 2012 to February 26, 2012.

I'll be interested to see what this stuff looks like and if Target can give Victoria's Secret a run for the money in the holiday lingerie gifting department. Not to mention the run to get ready for New Year's Eve parties. Target Australia has bought out designer lingerie collections with success, but I don't think that this has really been done state side unless you count the Liberty of London and Calypso St. Barth prints stamped on ladies lingerie that Target has done.  Josie Natori bras typically retail for about $50.00 to $70.00 US, so I would expect the Target collection to be about half that price. If you don't want to wait, check the designer's sale on her website.

10 Free Songs with a Frappucino at Starbucks

If you love coffee and music, as I do, then this is a deal for you.  Beginning June 6, when you buy any Frappuccino blended beverage, Starbucks will reward you with a free 10 Song Summer Mix on iTunes.
I love this deal! I've been spending some quality time at my local Starbucks lately enjoying the free wireless on my iPod and their lo-cal beverages.  There is even a low-cal Frappuncino for 100 calories I think.  So remember, if you stop by a Starbucks, ask about the 10 free song deal.

The Recessionista's Weekly Round-up!

Pictured: One King's Lane has an amazing sale on vintage fashion books going on this weekend.

After another long hard week of working, it's good to reflect on some fantasy fashion and shopping.  At least for me, I always find the escape a relaxing one.  Here's what's on my shopping radar this weekend.
  • Tesco UK announced their version of Kate Middleton's Shola dress from Reiss. The Florence and Fred Limited Edition bandage style dress will hit stores next month for the price of  £30.
  • Shopping club Ideeli is about to kick off a sale for Dads or new graduates (either high school or college).  On Monday, June 6 Ideeli will be offering a selection of gifts the newly-minted graduate or dear old dad in your life. Everything from Omaha Steaks to nifty gadgets to spa and restaurant experiences. Click here to use my invite to shop Ideeli.
  • One Kings Lane is offering a selection of fashion coffee table books on sale today. Top New York antiques dealer David Duncan is launching a sale of more than 250 exquisite books from his private collection on One Kings Lane which will run from Saturday, June 4 to Tuesday June 7. The sale includes many rare fashion titles -- all at discounted prices.  Fashion books are one of my favorite ways to pass a lazy weekend afternoon.  I'm lusting for the special edition book  on designer Poiret, but I wish it wasn't over $700.00!!  I was thinking of buying one of the books by Lady Diana Cooper (The Light of Common Day) until I discovered it was free for download on the Internet.
  • Derek Lam is still selling his collection on eBay, and I regret to say that I returned the sixth dress that I was so excited to find via the eBay Fashion iPod App.  I wasn't a good fit for me, especially for the $125.00 price tag.
  • Website Bluefly is having a designer clearance with prices up to 65% off.   There are a few good deals there on top brands.

Enjoy the weekend readers, and leave a comment if you have any good deals to share!

The Cut Gets the Scoop on Missoni from Target

Pictured: Missoni for Target via The Cut. Photo: Bauer Griffin
So here's a little budget fashion scoop: one of my favorite reads, The Cut has run an expose of the Missoni for Target line courtesy of some intrepid Paparazzi who went hiding and got the scoop via the above picture.  According to the article from The Cut  "Margherita Missoni, who will star in the campaign for the line, was photographed on the set of the Missoni for Target ad shoot. And there she is, wearing her affordable dress with her affordable headband carrying her affordable suitcase and affordable duffel."  Pretty funny that the Paparazzi got the scoop--it wasn't the bloggers leaking the news!  The bloggers were probably sworn to secrecy via an NDA (non-disclosure agreement.)

So the secret is out dear readers! What do you think? Are you lusting for Target by Missoni? Meantime poor Calypso St. Barth doesn't seem to be moving off the Target racks.  I keep waiting for it to hit the clearance racks.  I'm wondering if consumers are getting a bit tired of the alleged budget lines with over the $50.00 US price tags. :)
