NYFW: An Interview with Designer Norma Kamali on her Spring 2012 Collection, Walmart and more

Pictured:  Designer Norma Kamali wearing pieces from her Walmart NK Collection. (photo M. Hall)
One of the highlights of New York Fashion Week for me this year was seeing designer Norma Kamali participate on Day 7 by showing her Spring collection.  In the past, Ms. Kamali has done more quiet events during fashion week, including a show at the Apple show and a show featuring  QR codes at her own store. Ms. Kamali was one of the first designers to effectively develop an online presence to connect directly with consumers, rather than with buyers and press who for years were the primary attendees of New York Fashion Week. Perhaps her innovative use of technology over the years, partially explains her reticence to put on a full, live runway show.

However, as a great admirer of her clothes, and owner of more than a few, I always want to see the designer out front and center.  Last year she revealed her philosophy on why she was not showing at New York Fashion Week,  "I'm a background kind of person, I'm better kind of not being noticed.... I want to do what I want to do, so I've never had partners, never had investors. For me to do it, I have to find a way to do it my way." said Ms. Kamali.

This year, the iconic designer found her way to New York Fashion Week after a long absence.  She presented her Spring 2012 collection in the form of a movie at the David Rubenstein Atrium near Lincoln Center. The movie was set to the tune of Imelda Day’s “All For You.”  Ms. Kamali presented the movie in 3D  repleat with the audience wearing 3D glasses so they could best view the presentation. Her collection was playful, part 1920s flapper and part Marilyn Monroe as we remember her in the halter dress from The Seven Year Itch.  There was everything from gold lame, to simple black and white to polka dots.   Following the presentation, I had the chance to ask the designer  a few questions about her return to Fashion Week and her Walmart collections.  Following is the interview.

Q1: I was glad to see you participate in NYFW this year! What made you decide to put on a show there, when in the past, you have done other things off-site?

I felt it was the right time to connect with more people outside of my showroom.  3D is a big innovation for us, especially the shopping pages and I wanted to show this to as many people as possible.

Q2: You’re always so innovative in your use of technology.  This year you are using 3D, what made you use 3D for your show and website?

Fashion and technology go hand and hand beautifully.  I was inspired by the documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.”  Once I saw the textures and colors of the clothing, I knew I had to use this to show my Spring collection.  What I really love about the website concept is that it brings 3D fashion into everyone’s home.

Pictured: A look from NK Spring/Summer 2012 (image courtesy of  Norma Kamali)

Q3: What is NK Spring 2012 all about?  I see everything from 1920s style fringe dresses to a Marilyn Monroe type gold lame look. What is your inspiration for the collection?

My collection is meant to be happy, colorful and appeal to women who enjoy being women, being sensual while at the same time remaining empowered.  I love when a woman is totally confident with how she looks and presents herself with disarming sensuality.  I was inspired by my friend Jack Feldstein’s neon animated work “Dance Girls,” and at the same time wanted to convey my own idea of a “Dance Hall Girl.”

Pictured: The classic swimsuit updated for NK Spring/Summer 2012 (image courtesy of  Norma Kamali)
Q4: My readers are wondering if you will continue to work with WALMART?   Can you let us know, please?  I see stock at Walmart.com, but it’s hard to find the line in stores sometimes.

We recently finished our contract with Walmart, which was such a terrific experience for us.  As for the future, we are working on new opportunities everyday!  STAY TUNED...

Q5:  Tell us about the 3D contest game that you are running online now? What is that all about?

We wanted to make the film even more interactive and playful so users have a chance to choose six items that do not belong in the film.  We filmed a few items throughout our 3D fashion film- so you should definitely watch it again to figure it out!  You can win a prize!

I like the hook of the contest and the prize to lure the viewer in to closely observe the fashion show. Ms. Kamali has always been something of a marketing genius, using technology to enhance the fashion experience along with incentives to bring the consumer into the notion of fashion as an entertainment. She clearly sees the opportunity to use the art of gaming to engage customer.  To see her 3D fashion show, watch the video here.

To view additional looks, visit www.normakamali3d.com.  In case you don't own a pair of 3D glasses, visit the designer's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/normakamali and request a pair.

Balmain Diffusion Line to Debut at Paris Fashion Week

Pictured: A screenshot from the Balmain preview video
Fashion House Balmain has announced that they will show a diffusion line entitled Pierre Balmain this weekend at Paris fashion week.  I have to wonder what the founder of the house, Pierre Balmain, who was all about classic, luxurious styles and dressed Ava Gardner would think of this news. Dedicated to producing elegant styles, Pierre Balmain said that "dressmaking is the architecture of movement."  When he said that, I don't think he was talking about a line of T-shirts and skinny jeans (like the new diffusion line) which will bear his name.

Today's announcement proves unequivocally what designer Karl Lagerfeld told CNN about his Macy's line. "Today in fashion the inexpensive line is as important as the expensive line," explained Lagerfeld when asked why he decided to work with Macy's when he is already busy working for Chanel and Fendi.  I always thought that designers should have affordable clothes for consumers, and that was my basic premise when I started The Recessionista in 2008.   When the House of Balmain gets into the game, you know the fashion industry is truly transformed as they embrace thrift as the new chic.

So if you like the quality of Balmain, what can you expect from the lower priced line?  Look for versions of the trademark tailored jackets and slim jeans.  According to The Cut,  there will also be T-Shirts and mini-skirts. Pricing will range from $174 for T-shirts and $944 for suits.  Right, what kind of T-Shirt is worth that amount of money?  There will even be innovative designs like "muscle shirts" for men. (insert sarcasm here) You can see a preview of the clothing in a video released by Balmain starring model Abbey Lee Kershaw and the band Our Mountain. According to Balmain's Tumblr page, the video is "inspired by the downtown cool, rock sensibility and international lifestyle" Kershaw embodies.   That's a long way from the "new look" of full skirts with cinched,  small waists designed by Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior after WWII.

Sponsored Post: Princess Katherine's Reiss Shola Dress Goes on Sale Sept. 30th

Some of you may remember awhile back when I wrote about the terrific looking Reiss Shola dress that Kate Middleton, aka the Duchess of Cambridge, aka Princess Katherine, wore when the Obama's came to London on a recent State visit.  The dress is definitely rich enough looking for a state occasion, but the price tag of $330.00 USD  is surprisingly, not quite as high-end as you might think Buckingham Palace would warrant.  Now Reiss has come forward with a cousin of the sold-out Shola dress which is entirely Princess worthy, called the Lola. The new Lola dress is marketed as a move on from the Reiss Shola dress.  Reiss describes Lola " as a timeless day through to evening dress in a vibrant lava red." Just like the Shola dress, the Lola has short sleeves, an asymmetric neckline, defined waistband and figure hugging skirt, making it perfect for the office or dinner date dress. Or greeting the Obamas. However, it is not a perfect dress for hugging the Queen.  No dress is a good fit for that one :)
Pictured: Kate Middleton meets Michelle Obama in Reiss's 'Shola' dress Photo:AP via The Telegraph
The newest Shola dress, the Lola  is available  in an elegant cappucino the same camel color worn by Kate Middleton.   So if you lusted after the sold-out Shola dress, save the date to shop Reiss tomorrow for the new Lola dress. On Sept. 30th, you can save 10 % when you order the dress or any item from the Reiss Autumn Winter collections. Simply shop Reiss from this link, no promo code necessary,  in order to receive the discount. Valid only Friday, September 30th 9am – midnight EST.

New Citibank Survey Shows U.S. Women Remain Optimistic Despite the Economic Downturn

A new nationwide survey issued by Citibank finds that although U.S. women’s expectations for the economy have declined, they remain hopeful that their personal economic situations will improve.  The impact of the financial crisis and the ensuing recession have profoundly altered their financial habits, in ways large and small. Witness the proliferation of  savings blogs like The Recessionista. Most interesting, the findings show that thrift really is the new chic.  Frugality is most definitely here to stay, with 56 percent of women asserting that their spending and savings habits have changed forever.  Yes we can!

This survey, conducted by Hart Research Associates, found that 71 percent of American women believe the economic downturn still has a ways to go before reaching the bottom, an eight-percentage-point increase since the start of 2011.  However, a majority (61 percent) remain somewhat or very optimistic about their own personal economic situation within the next year.  They also maintain a confident self-assessment of their track to success, with 84 percent of women considering themselves somewhat or very successful in achieving their goals in life.  Their top definitions of success: being valued and respected by family and friends (55 percent) and the ability to save and plan for the future (21 percent).

So what does it mean to be fabulously frugal and live well? Well, the survey shows that being financially secure means staying healthy (44 percent), having a secure job (42 percent), avoiding debt (32 percent), and having an emergency fund (20 percent).  Other things women like to feel financially secure are investing in a savings account (30 percent) and their home (24 percent) as well as being their own boss (30 percent).

When it comes to saving and spending, American women are making deep and permanent changes in their personal finances.  Forty-four percent are saving and investing more, 31 percent have changed living arrangements to save money, and 24 percent have decided to postpone retirement.  They’ve gotten savvier in their spending, with 77 percent using coupons, 64 percent cutting back on premium products like coffee and food for less expensive options, 41 percent shopping in bulk, and 36 percent using online offers from sites, e-mail, or Twitter.  Yes, use tools like Twitter and social media coupons via Facebook and other sites to save.  Bing and Google are also become good savings sources via offers and price comparisons.

To further help women get the most from their money, Linda Descano, CFA®, President and CEO of Women & Co., offers the following strategies:
·         Start budgeting.  Once you determine where your money is going with a budget, you can prioritize your needs and potentially identify expenses that could be eliminated.

·         Commit to saving. Automatically put a set amount—no amount is too small—of every paycheck in your savings account. Immediately deposit unexpected income such as birthday checks or garage sale proceeds. Aim to accumulate enough to cover three to six months of living expenses in an "emergency fund"—and only tap that fund in a bona fide emergency.

·         Watch transportation costs.  Save thousands on a new car by purchasing one that's just a year or two old and yet still has a warranty. Carefully consider whether to finance or lease it. The decision may dramatically affect your monthly expenses.

·         Cut down on "luxury" spending. If you only go snowboarding or skiing twice a year, it might make more sense to rent equipment instead of buying the latest model and watching it collect dust the rest of the year. Traveling off-season and shopping during after-holiday and clearance sales also are ways to get more value for your money.

·         Stay on an investment diet. Just as eating a wide variety of foods is necessary for sustaining a healthy body, selecting an assortment of investments can help you maintain a sound investment portfolio. Rebalance your 401(k), IRA, and any other investment accounts you have on a regular basis to keep it in sync with your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

These are all good tips, and I thank  both Women & Co and Citibank for sharing the official survey findings with us on The Recessionista.

NYFW: A Round Up of Spring Looks from Designers Nanette Lepore, Tracey Reese and Walter

Pictured: A new take on the Little Black Dress from Walter Baker's 2012 Spring Presentation
I'm still catching my breath after Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. It was literally a rush. I was on the subway, running in my track shows, hopping in cabs and ultimately enjoying being driven by the great team at Perry Ellis as I rushed to see all the events I was invited to.  This year's shows featured presentations across the street from Lincoln Center at the Empire Hotel as well as shows at the Metropolitan Pavilion.  Following is a round-up of shows from designers and brands that offer clothing that is typically well under the $500.00 price point, and sometimes in the $100 to $200 price point if you catch it on sale at an online club or a discounter.

Here's my take on some designers that offer some great fashions, often at a lower price point.  Each brand had a different take on the latest trends and styles

Pictured: A brilliant Nanette Lepore dress.
Nanette Lepore Spring/Summer 2012

This show was all about color. Each look just popped, popped off the runway.  I was blinded by yellows, tangerines, lapis blues, and strong pinks.   While the color palette was bright, it worked well. Pieces in the Lepore collection included button-up shirts with detailing, tailored knit blazers, full skirts, an easy striped dress and skirts.  The entire collection was young, but also crisp and elegant.  Some of the swimsuits looked like great updates on vintage Lily Pulitzer.

I was surprised by how much I liked this collection, and I think it will look good on a variety of shapes and colorings. From blonds to raven haired Liz Taylor look a likes, I can see them all looking fabu in Nanette Lepore Spring/Summer 2012. Look for Nanette Lepore for less at Neiman Marcus Last Call sales, Bloomingdale's seasonal little brown bag sales and the designer's own website.

Pictured: Walter dress
 Walter Spring 2012
This collection was all about mixing textures and dimensions. The collection was shown in a presentation format on the roof of the Empire Hotel.  The mood was cool, hip and fun to wear.  If you watch The Real Housewives of New York, you would've recognized Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen on the red carpet at the Walter presentation. The suits from the Walter collection included hip jackets paired with sexy, sleek dresses mixed with prints in tops and shorts, as well as tweed jackets in bold colors that ranged from high to low back to high again.

Color blocking and pleats were a common stylish theme in this collection.
The dresses curve around the body in unexpected ways, with every piece holding a new element of surprise.  The designer’s eye for detail and cut is what makes WALTER unique.  Look for Walter for less on sale at Loehmann's and online clubs like Ideeli, Gilt Groupe and Rue La La.

Pictured: Tracey Reese dress
 Tracy Reese, Spring/Summer 201
The Tracy Reese show was alive with free flowing fashions in soft pastels plus a few stripes and floral prints. The entire 46 piece collection was romantic with lovely details and embellishments. There was nothing avant-garde here, just a great looking mix of frilly and sporty. A feminine yet relaxed mood is achieved through the juxtaposition of romance and sport, comfort and flattery. Subtle hues of khaki and blush mixed with pastel shades of waterfall, misty blue and aqua tears gradually intensify to deep saturated tones and neon brights, making a bold splash for the transition into summer,” says designer Reese.

Surprise! Target.com ships some Missoni items this week

Pictured:  My favorite piece Missoni for Target Space Dye Turtleneck - Pink
To my utter amazement I came home to find a shipping bag from Target.com at my doorstep this weekend.  Even more amazing, the items I ordered from the Missoni from Target line prior to the Target.com site crash were actually inside.  I had despaired that I might never receive my order, especially after receiving email from Target that my order would not ship until October.  I also had an email from them asking me if I still wanted the items, and to confirm or my order might automatically cancel. It seems that poor Target.com is still hobbling along after their site's crash.  Since changing to their own hosting platform from Amazon.com's eCommerce hosting platform, the Target.com customer experience still seems poor. I miss being able to sign-in to the site with my Amazon account and doing the one step ordering.

Several of my friends report that they also received there orders. So appears that orders from the Target line are shipping, and not too far behind the launch date.  After the debacle of a the site crash, it seems Target is working hard to fill the Missoni orders.

Overall, I have to say the quality of what I ordered is pretty good! My favorite item from my order is the above pictured turtleneck with the gorgeous patterns of pink, purples and white worthy of their high end line.  I also got the blue maxi dress, and it's a very good looking piece.  The dress is even fully lined, and fits beautifully.  For a $64.99 Missioni dress, this is definitely a deal. Of course, this is Missoni made in China, but if you've read the book Deluxe: How Luxury Lost It's Luster, then you may realize that most luxury goods are in fact made in China today, not just the discounted ones.

Margherita Missioni in the Target pieces from the August issue of Vogue

Of course, not everything from my order is good.  I'm not loving the sweater pictured above on Margherita Missoni in the August issue of Vogue in real life. The print panel on the front is completely see through and the flimsy material is not a good match with the knit sleeves and the back.  Just my opinion, but I'm not loving it and I'll be returning it to my local store. I also got the swimsuit, and I love the design, I'm just still thinking about whether or not I like that zig zag pattern on a suit.

Cruel Shoes: Missoni for Target Pumps

Last week some of you may recall that I was so excited to have found a pair of Missoni for Target Suede Pumps for sale at my local store. The coveted shoes had been abandoned/misplaced in the housewares section of Target.  Last night, my excitement turned to pain, as I wore my chic Missoni shoes out to a party.  Sure they look great.  But are they comfortable to walk in, or even stand in? The answer is a distinct no!  Buyer beware, if you see this shoes selling for inflated prices on eBay look away or check on M by Missoni at Nordstrom or on ShopBop for a better pair.  While these shoes are tres fashionable, and I received many compliments on them, I will be careful about where I wear them to next.  Perhaps a sit down dinner party would be a better fit for these cruel shoes.  Standing in them for a few hours is enough to make your feet scream for flip flops.  If you were sad that these shoes were sold out everywhere, and are still lusting for them, I hope reading this makes you feel better.  For forty bucks, there are good looking shoes that you can both stand and walk in at other stores.

Post Emmy Fashion: Sofia by Sofia Vergara Collection Launches at Kmart

Pictured: Pinup Posed Sofia Vergara in her Kmart Leopard Print Dress. (photo by Norman Jean Roy via Kmart)
Hot on the heels of the Emmy fashion red carpet parade, Kmart has announced Sofia by Sofia Vergara Collection.  You know you were waiting for the sexy star of modern family to come out with some reasonably priced lingerie, weren't you?  So what can you expect from this collection? A quick scan of Kmart.com shows me that the Sofia collection includes animal print T-shirts ($16.99), sweater-knit miniskirts ($24.99), a lace-sleeved knit dress ($36.99) and double-zip faux leather jackets ($59.99).  There's also an attention getting a leopard-print dress with corset style bodice  (pictured above on Sofia for $44.99).  It's all a bit tarty.  I'm not sure it's worthwhile as I haven't seen any of it, but the prices are in the lower range, (most pieces under $40.00.)

Pictured: Do you need the figure of Sofia to wear this stuff?  (photos via Kmart)
I think it's interesting that the line hits stores about the same time as J Lo's clothing line hits Kohl's stores. Apparently, you can't have too many discount TV diva lines for sale.   What do you think readers? Are you jonesing for some Sofia from Kmart?  If so, and you are in the New York City area, then you might want to drop by the Kmart store tomorrow at Astor Place. The Modern Family star, will be unveiling her new clothing and accessory collection at Kmart's New York City Astor Place location. The first one hundred customers to arrive will have the chance to meet Sofia and receive an autographed poster.

So if you want to meet Sofia , save the date of Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 1:30PM Kmart Astor Place Store, on 770 Broadway (between 8th and 9th St.)

If you go, leave me a comment and tell me what you think.

Donna Karan Emmy Dress Doppelgänger from Dalia MacPhee

Pictured: The look a like is in the middle, between images of Nina Dobrov in her Donna Karan at the Emmys.
If imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery, then I hope Donna Karan feels flattered by Los Angeles designer Dalia MacPhee strapless red gown. The MacPheee gown, pictured above in the middle photo,  reminds me of the Donna Karan gown Nina Dobrev wore to last nights Emmy Awards. The MacPhee dress has a Mermaid bottom, rather than a train with overlays like the Karan dress. The Donna Karan dress is a gorgeous creation, a custom version of Donna Karan Resort Look 50. Of course, it is also pricey (nothing wrong with that if you can afford it.) However, if you're looking for luxurious looking red gown for a bit less, check out Dalia MacPhee's Red Strapless Taffeta Mermaid Gown.  The MacPhee dress is priced at $328, click over to Nordstrom to check it out.  Looks like a great holiday dress to me for a special event.

NYFW: Interview with Project Runway's Althea Harper

Pictured: Designer Althea Harper (picture courtesy of Ms. Harper.)
How does a young, aspiring designer like Althea Harper make it from the the University of Cincinnati's School of Design  to showing at New York Fashion Week?   By working hard and coming to national attention by competing on Season 6 of the popular 'Project Runway' TV show. Although Althea didn't win on Project Runway, she won several challenges and guest judge  Tommy Hilfiger called her work as "genius".  Seeing her Spring 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week, I could see why Hilfiger and Tim Gunn  found her so talented as a designer. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to ask Althea a few questions about her collection and experiences as a young designer following her show last week.  I was so excited to learn that she went to the University of Cincinnati, since I grew up there.

Althea was in the Rowenta booth at Lincoln Center showing off their high-end stream irons. It's a simple, but sometimes overlooked fact, that a good pressing can make a  garment hanging in your closet look refreshed.  Taking care of your clothes with a simple steaming can extend their life and keep them looking their best.  Following is my interview with designer Althea Harper and some pictures of her collection.  I look forward to seeing her designs in stores next season.  Her collection was really beautiful and I'd love to wear the ivory dress pictured below next spring.

Pictured: A terrific ivory dress from Althea's Spring 2012 collection (picture courtesy of Ms. Harper.)

Q. Tell us a little about you Spring Summer show last night?  What was the inspiration for the collection?
A. The Spring/Summer 12 collection is definitely one of my favorite collections that I have ever put together.  I was inspired by the super-natural but also by fabrication.  I wanted the fabrics to be unique and make a statement about the quality of the garments.  My silhouettes are always about fit and I wanted the clean lines of those garments to be enhanced through fabrication, and tailoring.  The prints were taken from  pictures of old film where errors in development were thought to be ghosts, we completely reworked them into unique patterns that reminded me of water.

Q. How did you prepare the garments for the show?
A. I brought my Rowenta Pro-Iron Steam Station with me to my backstage of my show.  I love it because it is powerful enough to guarantee a great steam, but also is an iron for the pieces that really need to be pressed.  We are also transporting our collection, shoes, rolling racks, etc so the less that we have to carry the better, which is another great quality of the steam station- two for one!  I also only trust Rowenta to guarantee the results that I need to make my clothing look flawless for a show.

Q. What fabrics did you use in the collection?
A. I used chiffon, silk, cotton, linen, and a few knits.

Q.)Would you recommend the Project Runway experience to others?
A. I would recommend the experience for young designers that really want to start their own business but need a push.  It is a great way to get your name out there, become introduced to some of the top professionals in the fashion industry and possibly win some money to help start your line!  I even feel that as a runner up it helped me financially start my business with the various projects, speaking arrangements, and events that you are asked to do from being on the show.  You just have to have a strong personality and realize that the sewing/ designing is the easy part- its the drama of living and working together thats hard!

Q. I’ve interviewed other Project Runway contestants who felt the show depicted them at their worst, self deprived and under pressure.  Did you feel that way?
A. I would agree yes and no- it definitely shows you at your most tired (least attractive) state, and everyone has stressful or "freak out" moments that they wish the camera wouldn't pick up (of course those are the ones that always do!).  However, I also think that it can show your passion, talent and drive for your craft.

Pictured: Black Mini Dress with Cream Sleeves from Althea Harper Spring 2012. (picture courtesy of Ms. Harper.)
 Q. Can you share some of your favorites with us from your Spring Collection?
A. I LOVE the black mini dress with the cream pleated gauze sleeves, the knit sweater and maxi chiffon dress...but that is just because those are the pieces I have had the chance to wear so far...I really love everything ion the collection!

Q. Finally, what are the staple pieces your recommend for FALL?
A.  I would say some great military inspired or slouchy boots that do not have too high a heel or wedge if they do- you can pair them with leggings or jeans and a tee and look effortlessly stylish.  I also think a well fit blazer is a great staple- it can make almost any outfit effortlessly chic.  An over-sized scarf is a must have as is an over sized sweater or cardigan!

Readers, keep your eyes on Althea Harper as a designer.  I think she has a great future ahead of her. If you want to see her runway show from last week's NYFW, go to her website altheaharper.com

NYFW: DKNY Resort Collection 2012 Show with American Express Closes Fashion Week

Pictured:  A great looking red dress at the DKNY Resort Collection show (photo: M. Hall)
Donna Karan closed out New York Fashion Week last Thursday with the debut of her  DKNY 2012 Resort Collection in a special show with American Express at Lincoln Center.  This show was a different kind of Fashion Week show because the audience was consumers, not just press, buyers (retailer stores) and bloggers like me. The other difference in the show was its format, this was not a pure runway show, it was a fashion entertainment show featuring an interview with the designer before the show and a musical performance from artist Lykke Li.  "This is probably one of the highlights of Fashion Week for me," said Donna Karan before the show. "Showing in season to customers. Really communicating with the customer, really talking to the consumer, really having one on one communication with the consumer to get her excited about a season that she can really buy now."   In an industry where the shows are really about the season to come, this is a novel concept.

Approximately 1,000 people attended the show, almost double the size of most DKNY fashion shows. American Express cardmembers were able to buy tickets to the DKNY resort show and other fashion shows (the shows besides the DKNY resort show were only viewable from the American Express Skybox.) American Express has done well selling their fashion show packages which retail for $150 to $250 (depending upon seating).  I think it's a great idea to sell the tickets, although I do wish they were a bit lower priced, say starting at $50.00 to $75.00. A lower price point would make the shows truly more accessible to the consumers.

Pictured: The final walk at DKNY Resort 2012, photo courtesy of American Express.
DKNY's Resort Collection for 2012 was a different kind of collection.  Usually a Resort Collection features tropical, bright colors.  Not so DKNY Resort 2012. There were some great looking little black dress and some stunning red dresses.  In the interview segment of the show, the designer admitted that black was her favorite color, followed by red.  "Red and black are the same to me," noted Ms. Karan. That was clear when the models came out for the final walk and red and black dominated the runway.  I really liked all the dresses shown, they were on trendy, but nothing that will go out of fashion quickly.  The styles could definitely be worn for more than one season.

What do you think of the idea NYFW shows with ticket sales for consumers? Would you buy a ticket to see a show, just as you might a sporting event or rock concert?

Target Releases Statement on Missoni Orders via Target Website

On the day of the Missoni for Target launch I was able to access Target.com and place an order.  I didn't get much, since most of it was gone once the site came back online.   Since placing the order, I received notification that my order has been delayed until at least Sept. 27th.  This has left me and other consumers, wondering if their orders will ship at all.  Target has finally released a statement about their Missoni website orders.  I'm not sure if the statement answers any questions, but here it is:

"The nationwide launch of Missoni for Target on Sept. 13 was met by unprecedented demand, both in our stores and online at Target.com. This demand impacted our Target.com site and affected the shipment and delivery of select guest orders. Providing an exceptional guest experience is incredibly important to Target, and we have a team dedicated to addressing those guests who have been affected."

So there you go, the answer for now is that a team at Target is on it.  Maybe they can buy the stock back from eBay and fill the orders? :) Just kidding. You know that won't happen.  What's more likely is that the orders may not be able to be filled.  After all, with a major website crash like Target had, it's reasonable to expect that things will be messed up regarding Missioni inventory and availabilty for a while.

Sources at my local Target said there will be no restocking, so I do hope the Target.com orders ship so that consumers like me won't be too disappointed.  Some eBay sellers, with zero feedback, have priced the Missoni for Target items as high as the Missoni luxury line.  So there goes the idea of budget Missoni for all.   I hope consumers boycott these price gougers.  If the market won't pay the outrageous prices these carpet baggers are charging, then they will return the Missoni items to Target.

Perhaps the best comment is from Margherita Missoni via her Twitter account, "You guys! Very silly to buy #missonifortarget on ebay for three times the price!! For that money go out and get M Missoni!"

NYFW: Milly's Moderne Look at Spring/Summer 2012

Pictured: Geometric prints and color blocking lead the way at Milly SS 2012 (picture: M.Hall)
Last week  I received a sneak preview of the Milly Spring /Summer 2012.  The sketch looked a bit vintage with full skirts, cinched waist and fitted bodices.   Today, I saw the runway show, and while it was very vintage inspired in the design of the garments, the show featured  distinctive Milly prints that were very modern.  "My Spring 2012 collection is modern and geometric in cut and print, softened by earthy materials like wood and tortoise resin. Colors are vibrant and exciting- vermilion, tangerine, jade and azure are grounded by chocolate brown and indigo,” says Michelle Smith, Designer and Creative Director, Milly.

Pictured: Azure Blues at Milly complimented by browns and whites (photo: M. Hall)
The show's  runway backdrop illustrated the geometric design and the colors that the collection was built around. There were Jackie Kennedy like sheath dresses with distinctive big buttons for accent, printed skirts,  bright blues, emeralds and reds contrasted with traditional navy blue.   There was even a node to last year's  inspiration, Peggy Guggenheim, in the cat's eye 1960s sunglasses some of the models sported down the runway.   One dress was a scoop neck, short sleeved dress with this print of red and white circles, tweeted out in advance of the show.

Pictured: A close-up of a Milly print Tweeted by the Designer yesterday (photo MillybyMichelle Twitter Feed)

The French trained designer, Michelle Smith, updated her prints with uniquely American red, white and blue.   The collection looks very practical, yet spirited and upbeat.  These looks can take most women from the office to the cocktail party.  Look for Milly sold at Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, and MillyNY on Madison Ave. If you missed the show, look for the replay at MillyNY.com.

NYFW: Carlos Miele's Immersive Landscape for Spring/Summer 2012

Pictured: The final walk at the Carlos Miele show NYFW (photo: M. Hall)
New York Fashion Week is a wild mix of a little of everything. You have the quirky, the outré, the edgy, the classical and sometimes the exquisite. Now designer Carlos Miele introduces a new category of cool to the mix, techno fashion. His show Monday at New York Fashion Week was called the Immersive Landscape, born from the idea of immersive artificial environments. Imagine if you will, a fashion virtual reality full of "vivid colors in bright chemical tones."  This is Carlos Miele's vision of Spring/Summer 2012. And quite simply, the vision was breathtaking.  "I seek a dialogue between the artificial and the natural, modified beauty and organic technology and life," says Mr. Miele.   This dialogue translated beautifully into fluid lines, and tropical colors brought to life via the technology of digital prints.

Pictured: One of Carlos Miele exquisite gowns at NYFW (photo: M. Hall)
The color palette for the collection seemed to channel sunny Brazil via corals, tangerine, jade, turquoise, blazing hot white and bright summer prints.  Fabrics ranged from silk chiffon to crepes.  I could image the sea reefs and gold fish swimming all set to the tone of  the music of A Tonga da Mironga do Kabulete (translation Anywhere Faraway.)  The song was a terrific backdrop to this sunny collection, reminding the viewer of how fashion can literally take us away.

The Carlos Miele brand is sold at high-end department stores and boutiques. If you are ever lucky enough to see the dresses at a sample store, my advice is grab it with both hands.  Sometimes you can even find a piece on eBay or Rent the Runway.  The clothes are beautiful.  If this is virtual reality, give me more please.

Disappearing Act : Missoni for Target Gone in Two Hours

Pictured: My Missoni for Target finds (photo: M. Hall)
What's up with y'all storming the local Target stores like the French Bastille today and raiding the Missoni for Tar-jay?  Taking down the Target.com website too. Seriously people.  From 8 am to 10 am today, fashionistas seeking a bargain stormed their local stores, lining up before the stores opened.  The team members at my local Target told me that the store was out of most of the goods within the first hour.  After several "Go Collection" misses, the Missoni collection was clearly a hit.  I picked up just a few pieces, a pair of shoes, some plates and a hat.  Will they last a lifetime? Of course not! I don't think they will last long at all, but the prints are colorful and vibrant and the price is right.

Pictured: The leftovers, some pillows getting the once over. (photo: M. Hall)
Now, here's my question---did the good really sell to the final buyer, or did they sell to enterprising eBayers looking to resell them for a bit of a profit? A quick search of eBay reveals that there are several hundred items listed, some labeled as Missoni for Target, some just labeled as Missoni.  I didn't see too many bids on them yet.  Wait a few days...if they don't sell, they will go back to Target.
My local store said they would also try to restock some items by Friday, so stay tuned.

Readers, did any of you score any Missoni for Target? If you got it, would you resell it to pay some bills or keep it?

Update:  As of Sept. 14th early am, Target.com was back up and running with a few Missoni items for order.   Look for those to go quick, with Missoni mania in full swing.

Missoni for Target Topples Target.com?

Lusty  for a little Missoni for Target today?  Well, don't look for it at Target.com.  At least not yet.  The site is down.  I don't know if it is because of the new collection in stores today, or some other internal problem, but the site is not working at the moment. I'm headed to my local store after work to check on the collection. I saw the laptop carry bag at Target sported by fellow blogger, The Budget Babe, but I haven't seen any of the other pieces.  Target Addict reports it was selling out at her store.

Stay tuned, as I go in search of the goods.  More soon.
