Announcing Marni for H&M for Spring 2012

The dust is still settling on the Versace for H&M launch, yet H&M is moving forward in a bold way with the announcement of the addition of Marni to the H&M racks in Spring 2012.  No offense to Donatella and her studded leather and fuschia rock star garb, but I am much more excited about being able to buy some affordable Marni.  Marni has long been a fashion brand on my wish list.  It's both whimsical and quirky, but always beautiful. In case you are not familiar with the line,  Marni is an Italian fashion label, headed by Consuelo Castiglioni. It is sold at Barney's New York, Neiman Marcus and other luxury retailers.  Occasionally you can pick up a piece on sale at the Barney's Warehouse sale or the Net-a-Porter end of season sale, but it's still usually $1,000 USD a piece.  Lower priced versions can be found on eBay. I expect that H&M will sell their version for several hundred less than the luxury retailer sale prices.

My spies tell me that the H&M line will feature Marni's signature prints and whimsical styles with splashes color. According to Women's Wear Daily the collection will be sold in about 260 H&M stores worldwide, as well as online (can you hear the website crashing now?)

"I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colors, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic adding sporty utilitarian elements," Castiglioni told Forbes.

Marni for H&M will be in stores on March 8, 2012.  This is one I am willing to wait in line for, what about you readers?

Starbucks 12 Days of Merry Deals

I'm traveling today, and as is my habit when traveling, I am refueling at the Airport at a Starbucks.  I always buy plane snacks and beverages at the Starbucks as it is cheaper than the many airport concession shops, not  to mention the food and beverage sold on the airlines.  Starbucks is frequently the most cheap and cheerful place to refuel at most local malls while shopping for deals. How many of you stopped in at Starbucks for a boost on Black Friday?  So I saw this little deal and thought I would share it with my readers. From Dec. 1-12, Starbucks is featuring a special deal each day.  Some  highlights include:

  • Dec. 1: 4-Pack Chocolate Crème Whoopie Pies - 1 for $3.95/2 for $6.00
  • Dec. 3: 16 oz. Holiday themed Cold Cup for $9.95
  • Dec. 9: Buy 1lb. of Christmas Blend whole bean coffee and get a 3-pack of Starbucks VIA® for FREE
  • Dec. 12: Buy a tumbler and get free brewed coffee during the entire month of January

These offers are only available on the above-mentioned days and only while supplies last.  If you're a coffee aficionado like myself you may want to stock up on the Christmas blend while the deal is on.
Don't forget to pick up the free iTunes music cards when you stop in.   Free music is another big Starbucks benefit.

Cyber Monday 2011 Deals and Safety Tips for Shopping Online

Tomorrow is technically the start of the shopping holiday known as Cyber Monday. This year I would say Cyber Monday is almost a "non-event." Why you may ask? Because so many of the stores started their online sales last week, at the same time as the in-store Black Friday sales. Today is really Cyber Sunday because so many stores already have their allegedly "Cyber Monday" deals online.  The artist formerly known as Cyber Monday is merging into all the other sale days of the year.

Having said that, there are a few things for you to think of before you start full-on Cyber shopping. The primary concern is safety. As a survivor of various cyber attacks and viruses, I can tell you first hand that you do need to be careful where you shop. The CyberMonday.org site recently provided some helpful tips for your consideration. Here's the 411 from Scott Silverman of the National Retail Federation and Shop.org.

Safety Suggestions:
  • Be sure to shop on reputable, trust-worthy sites such as CyberMonday.com and its retail partners
  • Just as you’re more careful when shopping in busy malls during the holiday, be more careful online as well
  • AVG offers free downloads of virus scan and link scan here: www.shop.org/shopsafely and http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Cyber Security Tips:
  • Look for the “S” for Security: Make sure the sites you are shopping from are secure and have “HTTPS” in the URL. The “S” ensures security. Also, look for the padlock symbol and research shopping sites at locations such as shopzilla.com and pricegrabber.com.
  • Stay Current on Security Software: Make sure you have the latest virus protection software updates from your provider before you start your holiday shopping.
  • Think Before You Link: Employ a URL scanning tool to ensure you’re not clicking on links that lead to infected websites. Free tool here: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
  • Keep Your Private Information Private: Make sure you keep your personal information private. Create a separate e-mail account just for shopping and use a unique password. Keep records of your online shopping by printing confirmation pages and e-mail confirmations.
  • Mix Up Your Passwords: Each e-mail, bank, credit card account should have a unique password. Write them down and store them in a secure location.

Now that we have that silly old security and safety stuff out of the way, let's talk savvy shopping!  Yahoo reports that the majority of shopping is for deals at Best Buy (157% more searches than the next), Wal-Mart, Amazon and Target.  Over those, Amazon is the only 100% cyber store without a brick and mortar component. Here are a few top picks.

Target: Over at Target.com, there is a Cyber Monday sale that will last all week. I hope they have increased their website traffic capacity, so they don't crash if they get too many orders. Deals include the typical electronic fare: TVs, cameras, video games, kids toys and cosmetics.  Looks like the few remaining Missoni items online are at last gone.

Macy's: The Cyber Monday deals are already online. free shipping on orders of $75 or more when you enter code CYBER at checkout. There's a lot of the Lagerfeld collection on clearance at Macy's , particularly the junior sized pieces.

Kohl's:  Get 20% off at Kohl's AND free standard shipping when you enter code CYBER20 at checkout.  There are already over 200 deals listed.  Look for some of the sparkly tops from the JLo collection on sale, although warning, the stuff is cheap and won't last.  Your money might be better spent on toys, jewelry, household items and electronics.

Bloomingdales: The Big Brown Sale is on until midnight EST Nov. 27. Look for the bargains on their website of 30-40% off.  More deals to come on Cyber Monday I am sure.   Free shipping on any order until Nov. 28 using code FREESHIP11. If you're a handbag lover, Designer Handbags are 30% off until Dec. 4th.

Ralph Lauren: Save 25% off until Nov. 28th and free shipping on online orders. Click on the sale section of the site to see the Holiday Weekend event price reductions.

JCrew.com: Mrs. Obama's fav chic n' cheap store is offering an additional 20% off holiday sale items with code YOURGIFT, plus free shipping on purchases of $150 or more.

Overstock.com: Savings in every category. And they ship almost worldwide, so everyone can enjoy the savings.

Ann Taylor: 40% off, code is THANKS.

DSW Shoes: Receive discounts on all items when shopping online. www.dsw.com Use code: CYBER.

Cashmere at Costco: Italian Designer Enzo Mantovani Hits the Discount Warehouse

Pictured: The Enzo Mantovani tunic cashmere sweater for $139.99 from Costco.
Back in 2004, by my reckoning, Costco started selling cashmere in their stores.   Once considered an item only attainable by the very rich, cashmere has now become fairly commonplace. However, not all cashmere is created equal. When buying, you have to consider the quality of the pieces and the ply of the cashmere.  Cashmere is made from the hair of goats, goats typically found in Mongolia.   The longest, thinnest goat hair has been said to make the softest cashmere sweaters. Consquently, shorter, coarse hairs make, well, a coarser blend. Which blend is Costco selling? I don't know yet.  The discount warehouse just stocked a line of cashmere sweaters by Italian designer Enzo Mantovani for the holiday season. This is the second year that Costco is selling the Italian designer's sweaters. Prices start at $59.99, and there is a nice variety of colors and styles for both men and women.  With a price range from $59.99 to $199.00 (for a men's cardigan) prices average about  75% off department store and boutique prices for what is advertised as "100% Cashmere."  Costco says the sweaters will be available only for a limited time, so check your local store or Costco online to see the selection.  I haven't tried one yet myself, but will be doing a review very soon. The designer's PR firm is sending me one for evaluation.  I'm anxious to see what the quality for the prices is.  When cashmere calls, The Recessionista listens! Stay tuned.

In the wake of the Black Friday in-store fiasco, some of you maybe interested in the Net-a-Porter online end of season sale.  Many luxury designers are featured for up to 50% off today, including some of my absolute favorites like Roland Mouret, Milly, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Missoni, Prada, Donna Karan, Rebecca Taylor, DKNY, Malandrino, Valentino, Thakoon, Derek Lam and Alice Temperley.  I still have some funds on my American Express prepaid card, and I am contemplating a great designer dress from the sale.  If you missed the Versace for H&M scrum, check out the real thing on sale at Net-a-Porter today.

Black Friday Alternatives: Deals on eBay and Small Business Saturday

Pictured: Black Friday on eBay will have deals all month.
The news headlines on today's Black Friday shopping frenzy are dismaying to say the least.  A woman sprayed 20 other shoppers with pepper spray at a Walmart in Los Angeles in order to get the best deals.  Meanwhile, in another part of the US, shots were fired at a mall last night in Fayetteville, NC.   There were also several armed robberies reported.  Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but what is going on when people are shopping "competitively" with guns and pepper spray? Do we really need to hurt each other and be violent to get the biggest, cheapest TV or gadget?   Frankly, I am disgusted and I haven't been out to face this shopping frenzy.  I agree with the New York Times, article quoting Professor Etzioni, who teaches computer science at the University of Washington, “The bottom line is, Black Friday is for the retailers to go from the red into the black,” he said. “It’s not really for people to get great deals on the most popular products, ” notes Professor Etzioni.

So be safe people.  Here are a few alternatives for you to consider.  First, Holiday Deals at eBay.
eBay is offering deals all month long and you can shop safely from your computer.  Second, remember that tomorrow is Small Business Saturday.  Head out to local shops on Main street and sign-up for a $25.00 credit with American Express on your credit card to save.

And remember, Cyber Monday is just around the corner.  More online deals are coming very soon.  So be kind to each other.  Shopping is not meant to be a contact sport.

Black Friday Round-up: Store Deals and Doorbusters

Although the economy is far from robust and an overall wallet clampdown is still going on, many won't be able to resist the siren's call of Black Friday. Yes, friends a man-made monster is indeed on the loose and is coming to a city near you. Look out, its Black Friday, coming this Friday, Nov. 25th. This shopping catastrophe of in-store overcrowding is on the rampage. It will leave carnage in its wake and shoppers sleeping in their cars overnight. This year, many stores are starting their "Black Friday" deals tonight and even today, with stores open on Thanksgiving.  Some of you may have already read the outcry from store employees who have to work on their holiday.

The traditional contagion known as Black Friday takes over the mild mannered, luring them out to malls in the US at 4am and 5am, in a mad rush to get into the store early for door buster specials and promises like "the first 50 customers in the store will receive "...... fill in the blank.  I used to be kinda excited about Black Friday, but this year, I'm not so much.  That's because Black Friday seems to last for 30 days now, not just 1 day, and it's getting longer and longer.  I may just sleep in.  What about you?

Happy Thanksgiving and a Toast!

Pictured: An updated Wassail punch with Cranberries for holiday cheer (photo: M. Hall)
Happy Thanksgiving readers! I hope you are all enjoying a relaxing day at home with your families and doing a little cooking in preparation for the big feast.  Here at The Recessionista HQ we are in high-gear cooking a pumpkin pie and making the stuffing.  Last week I attended a fabulous party at Mrs. Beasley's in Beverly Hills featuring Cheryl's cookies and recipes from Rachel Hollis.  On this festive day, I wanted to pass along Rachel's recipe for a delicious holiday cider drink (pictured above.) The recipe reminds me of a drink that my English grandfather loved, called Wassail punch.  Wassail is a traditional  spicy cider drink served in the cold months to take off the winter chill.  Here in the states, it's a perfect kickoff to the holiday season, although the temperatures aren't quite frosty yet.

Pictured: The Recipe for Rachel's holiday cider sip
For this Holiday Cider sip, combine all the ingredients listed above (apple cider, brandy, and spices) and heat on the stove over medium flame for about 1 hour.  Then let it cool.  When the guest arrive, poor the mixture into a Champagne flute, and then fill the glass with 1/3 of the Wassail cider mix.  Top with the chilled champagne and garnish with some cranberries for a glass of holiday cheer.
Remember to take some time for yourself today, and don't fuss too much in the kitchen.  We're all working hard and need some me time.   Remember to skip the fussy and relax a bit.

Pictured: Some good holiday advice, skip the fussy.
Happy Thanksgiving dear readers.  Here's a virtual toast to all of you.  Enjoy the holiday.  And rest up for the upcoming Black Friday shopping fest, if you are strong enough to venture out to stores. Check out all the deals and listings here on the blog for details on coupons and shopping times.

Looks for more tips from Mrs. Beasley's cookies and Cheryl's after the holiday season, plus a $25.00 gift card giveaway here on the blog to help you get some holiday cookies or treats from Cheryl's.

Loehmanns.com Launches to Jump Start Black Friday

Some of us have been waiting for this news along time.  The wait is over. The savings at Loehmanns have gone online with a new ecommerce site where you can now order designer deals from your handy web browser. The site promises the same 30 to 65% off designer deals that the stores have always featured.  In anticipation of Black Friday, the site is offering 25% off select coats, denim, boots, shoes and cold weather accessories.  To sweeten the savings, shipping is free until Nov. 28th.  Areas of the site include Womenswear, Menswear, Accessories, Shoes and Handbags.   I find the site simple and easy to navigate. I also like that you can use your Loehmanns Insider card for savings, just like you would in the store.  So move over Gilt Groupe, Rue La La, Haute Look and Beyond the Rack, because the big dog is moving in, Loehmanns! What do you think readers? Have you checked it out yet? Loehmann.com offers another reason not to get out to the mail early on Black Friday.

I'm looking over the selection of goods tonight, and I see a few great holiday picks from brands like French Connection and Savoir.  Beyond traditional womenswear, there is also menswear, maternity clothing and plus size clothes.  In celebration of the launch, everything is currently 20% off, so this is a good time to check out the site to save.  Take a look and tell me if anything strikes your fancy.  There's no Roland Mouret, but there is one dress that comes close.

Versace for H&M: US Launch and I slept through it

Today was the US launch for the Versace for H&M collection and I was home asleep in my bed after a hard week of work. Do I like the clothes? Well sure. Can I face the lines? I could stand for hours and camp over night, but it's not how I want to spend my weekend.  I'll look at the upcoming hundreds of listings on eBay from resellers and store returns to see if I can pick up a piece. But as I said previously, while I love Versace, it's a little to flamboyant for an ordinary girl like me.  I'm not going to the Grammys or the Globes and I don't need all heads to turn to look at my plunging neckline (as J. Lo did), or bright pink dress or turquoise print leggings.  As my fellow blogger Lorna from The Fabulous Report tweeted, "I am sad that I didn't get my dress(es) from the collection but my credit card is happy."

I do still lust for the lovely little black dresses, but I'm really over the crowd scramble for budget fashion.  There's a new budget fashion collection about every month at this point, so I'll just wait and see what comes next that actually suits me.  What about you readers? Anybody get up at crack of dawn to shop?

Shop Small Businesses on Saturday Nov 26 and Receive a $25.00 American Express Card Credit

Are you tired of the traffic, crowding, and sometimes downright dangerous behavior at the malls during the after Thanksgiving sales, specifically Black Friday?   Then you might want to consider shopping small businesses, boutiques and markets in your neighborhood next Saturday.  You'll skip the crowds, and get some nice incentives from American Express if you are a card holder. American Express card members who enroll online via Facebook for Small Business Saturday incentives, and then use their cards at a small business that accepts American Express on Nov. 26th, (aka Small Business Saturday), will earn a $25 statement credit.  I did this last year, and I received the statement credit very promptly from American Express on my December statement after signing up in mid November, so I can personally vouch for the savings you'll receive from this program.

To learn more, follow the discussions on Twitter using hashtag #SmallBizSat or check out the Facebook group.  Props to American Express for supporting Small Business Owners.   They haven't had an easy time in this economy, to it's important to remember them during the holiday shopping season.  Many of them have great deals too, they just don't have the large advertising budgets that the big brands have to reach the mass market.

Versace for H&M Sell Out in Europe and the UK, Website Crashes under Demand

Well, I had hoped it wouldn't happen to the Versace for H&M collaboration, but sadly it did.  The H&M Europe eCommerce website crashed this morning under the demand for the discounted designer goods.

My spies in the UK tell me Donatella swept into H&M Regent Street  store in London for the premiere of the collection wearing the studded leather trench coat from her H&M line.  As she swept in, the clothes swept out.  I understand it's all sold out both in store and online.  Will we see the same thing here in the US? Probably.  Check my next post on how to shop the US sale Saturday.  Cheers!

Verace for H&M: Shopping Rules and Limits

Pictured: Donatella Versace on the Milan runway in an H&M Versace dress (photo via H&M)
The Versace for H&M collection will go on sale this week. The sale will occur on Thursday, Nov. 17th in Europe and Saturday, Nov. 19th in the US.  To help shoppers in the UK and London, The Telegraph has published H&M's rules for shopping Versace.  The sale will be determinedly organized according H&M reports published in The Telegraph.

"There will be lines, and wristbands to tag shoppers.  Shoppers will have time and item limits for shopping in the stores.  shoppers will need to queue in advance to receive a wristband with an allocated shopping time on it. Wristbands, which will be given out on a 'first come first served basis' will be available from 7am on Thursday 17th, in anticipation of stores opening at 9am that day.

Shoppers will be allowed in stores in groups of 20, with a shopping allowance of just 10 minutes. Customers can only buy one of each item and only in one size to stop customers buying for their friends or bulk-buying popular styles to sell on eBay."

Pictured: How to shop Versace for H&M (via HM.com)
Clearly, the days where mongrel hoards of shoppers swarmed into H&M taking all the goods off the racks, as they did with Stella McCartney, are over.  Or at least H&M is taking precautions to try to make it so.  I will be interested to read the news from the UK to see how the lines and wristbands thing goes on the 17th.  The Telegraph  reports that H&M will reward early bird shoppers. According to the English paper and H&M online, "the first 280 shoppers at H&M stores will be offered a 20 per cent discount which can be used against the rest of the brand's collection (but not the Versace collaboration) and a sample of Versace's latest fragrance."  H&M has published guidelines on their site about how to shop the collection.   According to Fashionista.com " The rules will be similar here in the US, but stores will open at 8am instead of 9am. Wristbands will be given to ladies, but not to guys shopping." Is that discriminatory? Seems strange to me.  To read the complete set of H&M shopping "guidelines" click here.

Frankly, I find it all a bit daunting.  I like some Versace items, and then there are some that are way too flamboyant for my tastes.  Of course, it all depends on your individual taste and your willingness to give of your precious time to stand in line for several hours.  I'm not sure I'm up for it this year, what about you? Are you thinking of camping out?

Sponsored Post: Staying on a Budget with the American Express Prepaid Card

As some of you may remember, I've been evaluating the American Express Prepaid card. With $2,000 dollars loaded on the card, I expected to be on the way to my fashion champagne wishes and caviar dreams.  I have been looking for something I absolutely love, a true luxury item that I normally couldn't afford or wouldn't normally throw caution to the winds to purchase.  I truly expected to run over to the Chanel boutique like a drunken sailor on leave and use my card allotment on a big splurge.  But that is not what happened.  I have splurged on a gorgeous Chanel item, but I got a deal on it ($265.00 purchase price), and I have plenty of funds left to buy other things.

Pictured: My new true love, a classic Chanel sweater, purchased with my prepaid card.
Although this is a sponsored post, I am relaying my honest experiences here with the card.  The card has had an unexpected effect on me.  Because it is loaded with a specific amount, I found I am budgeting very carefully.  I like being able to use the American Express online tools to check the amount on my card and know where I am at.  For some reason, I have been more careful with using the money on this card, than I am making charges on my credit card.  Knowing that the card only has a certain amount on it, and that it will run out, has made me much more cautious with my spending.

The psychological effect of setting limits.
The dollar limit on the card is having a pychological effect on me and is making me fashionably frugal.  I have activated text alerts on the card so that I will know when I am running low on funds and when a purchase has gone through.  With the text messaging feature, I can ask the American Express prepaid service to tell me the balance on the card.  That's a great feature when you are out shopping, especially with Black Friday sales right around the corner.  The siren's call of a sale can be enticing, but with the prepaid card, you know you have a financial limit and you can check you card balance anytime on your phone to see how you are doing.

Everyone can use the American Express Prepaid Card.
Another benefit that I like about the card, is that card is for everyone, not just the wealthy. It's a fact that in this "great recession" some people can't get credit cards anymore. There are people who no longer have checking accounts, or if they do, they have no incoming cash to fill the account with.  This robs people that are already going through tough times of having a card to use as security when they shop for basic essentials. How many times when ordering something on the phone, or even trying to get a drug prescription at the pharmacy, is a credit card needed? You can't hold a room at a hotel if you are traveling without a credit card to use as a security deposit. You can't purchase a plane ticket without a valid credit card number. With the holidays coming, many people will be traveling to see friends or relatives, and they need a card to make travel plans.  If they have been denied credit, or if their cards are maxed out, it could be life saver to have a friend or family member give them a prepaid American Express card during this holiday time. With an American Express card, they will get to use the full amount loaded on the card. No fees are deducted.  Just remember to start early with ordering the card, so you have ample time to get funds transferred to it for gifting. As I learned, there can be technical gotchas whenever you use an Internet portal. So factor in some extra time for that.  I am thinking of ordering a card for my little niece to use for her Christmas shopping.  I think it will be a valuable lesson for her in managing money.

My fashion future with the American Express prepaid card
Because I got such a great price on my black Chanel sweater (with white Camellia flower woven into the knit) I still have plenty of funds left for the upcoming annual festival of shopping known as: Black Friday/ Cyber Monday. I am going to sit tight on the remainder of my funds, and look for more deals during the upcoming sales. I would  like to get another Chanel piece and some real gem jewelry.  I might even try to bid online at the upcoming Elizabeth Taylor jewelry auction just for the thrill of it with my prepaid card.  How cool would that be?

I don't know where the rest of my American Express prepaid card shopping journey will take me, but stay tuned as I will be reporting in after Black Friday/Cyber Monday on my finds.  I plan to check out Sequels Boutique in Beverly Hills and Adore in Cary, NC for designer treasures.  I will also go over to The Way  We Wore on LaBrea to see if they have any vintage Irene Lentz treasures.  With my prepaid card, the opportunities are limitless as long as I stay within my budget, and in a way, that's the real luxury.

Fashioning Fall with TJ Maxx Off-Price Bargains and a Special Giveaway

A cadre of The Recessionista's readers and top Southern California bloggers joined forces this weekend at my local TJ Maxx store to get ready for fall and cooler temperatures by checking out the amazing selection of sweaters, outerwear and holiday bling that is available at "off-price" bargain rates.  "Off-price" shopping means that the sale is on everyday at TJ Maxx with the same merchandise and top designers that you'll find at high-end department stores. The difference is that the merchandise will be for sale at up to 60% off the retail price.  Every price tag at TJ Maxx shows the retail price and the TJ Maxx or Marshalls price (if you go to Marshalls to shop.)  From personal experience, I can tell you that it is intoxicating to shop at either store, find designer deals and quality merchandise at deep discounts.   How do they do it? Listen up, and I'll tell it all.

Pictured: One of my favorite fall fashions, a Cynthia Rowley jacket with exquisite detail (photo: M.Hall)

TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores get over 10,000 new items every week.  That is in each store.  Can you even imagine what you might find, with that quantity of merchandise? The secret: continual digging for the best for less.  While buyers from major retailers tend to go out the season before the current one to pick the collections they want to stock by picking from the fashion week runways, TJ Maxx & Marshalls buyers are constantly negotiating deals with designers and manufacturers all over the world.  This translates to a real competitive edge, as the buying scouts for the company can pick-up fashions, jewelry, electronic accessories and even gourmet foods when buyers from other companies are not yet looking for stock.  That's how the company picks up merchandise from designers like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Jones of New York, Cynthia Rowley, Max Studio and Nanette Lepore.  During the fall fashioning event, I sighted deals from each of these fashion brands in the store.  Just check out the gorgeous red boiled wool jacket pictured above.  Not to mention the fabulous tweed jacket below. Both jackets are by Cynthia Rowley. For me, it was so exciting to see Cynthia Rowley at affordable prices after attending her high-end show at New York Fashion Week this year.

Here are some of the top Fall Fashion pieces that you can find at your local store:

  • Chiffon, silk and sequined blouses for work or play
  • Chunky knit sweaters and cardigans for extra warmth
  • Slim  and tailored trousers and virtually every style of jean
  • Tweed and wool jackets in a variety of styles
  • Faux fur gloves, vests and short jackets
  • Animal prints on shoes, blouses and short coats
  • Statement necklaces
  • Stylish dress in every shape and style

The Recessionista Reviews Harajuki Mini for Target

Pictured: Harajuki Mini on the Target sales floor.
Gwen Stefani's Japanese inspired children's line, Harajuki Mini, for Target arrived in stores today.  I didn't see any hoarding among shoppers at my neighborhood store.  This was no Missoni type shopping madness.   Target.com is not selling any of the items, which may be a necessary precaution while their site stablizes, so the range is available for sale on in store and on eBay.  There are hundreds of items on sale on eBay, but not the thousands that were on eBay after the Missoni for Target launch.

Pictured: A flashback to my Catholic school uniform. (photo from Target.com)
I didn't see the full collection, but what I did see was very unimpressive.  Some of the outfits (jumper  and the short sleeve sweater with tie top) look like my old Catholic school uniform pieces.  Maybe Sister Mary Agnes should start merchandising those old vest and ties we had to wear for Target.  The T-shirts with cartoon characters are very cute, but I'm note sure kids will clamor for  them like they do for Thomas the Train, Glee or High School Musical.  The girls dresses are very cute, but for $24.99. I didn't think they were that special.  Bottom line, I was disappointed.  I give Harajuki Mini for Target a big Meh.   If you saw it at you local Target store, leave me a comment and tell me what you think.

Chinese website offers Versace for H & M pre-launch

Anxious to get your hands on a piece of the Versace for H&M collection? A Chinese website called Taobao.com seems to have the entire collection on sale. What up with that? The official collection launch  is not due at H&M stores until Nov. 19th, but somehow these are being sold in China as "German Limited Edition"  Versace for H & M  pieces.  Fashionista.com received a tip about the site, which then tipped me off that this was online.  I have looked at the pieces, but it's impossible to verify if they are real or counterfeit as the site uses the same images as the H&M Look book for Versace.  An English translated version of the site called TaobaoSeek.com has the Versace pieces listed for sale by individual sellers, almost like eBay does.  The black dress (see above) that I wanted from the collection is selling on TaoboSeek for $318.00 US, a steep mark-up from the H&M price.   The whole thing looks a bit shady to me.  What do you think readers? Would you be tempted to order in advance and take a risk on these pieces being authentic? We know that Versace for H&M is sure to be a sellout within 15 minutes of the store openings on the 19th. Who is ready to camp out?

Marilyn Monroe's Wedding Ring from Joe DiMaggio to Go on Sale

Pictured: Marilyn Monroe along side her diamond eternity band.
In 1954, Joe DiMaggio gave Marilyn Monroe a platinum eternity band set with 35 baguette-cut diamonds (see above). Flash forward over 60 years, and that wedding ring is going on the auction block. The ring will be auctioned off,  along with Judy Garland's ruby slippers from the "Wizard of Oz",  at 3-day auction in December.  The ring (with one diamond missing) is estimated to be sold for $300,000 to $500,000 USD.  I find the continual selling and merchandising of Marilyn tragic.  She was a fashion icon, with her Chanel No. 5 perfume, her pearls, capri pants, oversized sweaters, Pucci dresses and her beautiful handbags.  It's too bad all those items were not left to a cherished loved one.  Instead everything she left behind went to her "estate" and periodically items are sold off to benefit the estate.

Although Marilyn left her acting coach, Lee Strasberg, her personal effects, which amounted to just over half of her residuary estate, she wanted him to "distribute [the effects] among my friends, colleagues and those to whom I am devoted."  That never happened.  Everything was put into storage and later, it was sold at Christie's.  Now her ring from the Yankee Clipper will be sold again at an auction. The ring is missing one of the diamond baguettes, but I expect it will still sell for a large amount. Her dress from The Seven Year Itch was just sold by Debbie Reynolds at auction for about 4 million. Clearly, there is a market for Marilyn.

Replicas of Marilyn's ring already are in market.  A company called Amoro Fine Jewelry is selling an eternity band very similar to the ring Joe gave Marilyn Monroe.  The Amoro rings retail for  $1,395 to $1,750. I'm sure they will be sold using Marilyn's image and likeness.  What do you think readers? would you pay that amount for a ring like Marilyn's?
