Rent the Runway tells us what customers are renting for New Year's Eve

Rent the Runway just published some interesting fashion statistics on what customers are renting for the New Year's Eve festivities.   Looks like my lace and sequins predictions have been confirmed.  Most Rent the Runway customers are renting sequin cocktail dresses by some of my favorite designers like Milly, Nicole Miller, and Moschino.  Rentals of lace dresses and strapless dresses are a much smaller percentage. Milly's delicious looking pink dress with rosette skirt is also a top rental choice.  Click here to see all the detail on what's trending for New Year's Eve fashions. I don't see Los Angeles on the list, so I guess LA fashionistas are shopping the sales or their own closets rather than renting.

Pictured: Milly's Pink Almond Rosette Dress is one of the top NYE Rentals on Rent the Runway.

If you're interested in renting a special designer for 2012, check out Rent the Runway using my referral link. If you use my link, I receive a referral fee when you rent, and you can also refer your friends and receive a credit to bring the cost of your rental down.  Discount shopping and credits are some of my favorite savvy shopping tools. :)

Fashion Insider: First Look at Tadashi Shoji Rose Court Gowns

Pictured: The Tadashi Shoji Rose Court Gowns, white for the Queen, blue for her court.
How many of you watch the Tournament of Roses Parade from beautiful Pasadena, California every year?  Some people watch for the football, but not me.  Over here at The Recessionista HQ, we like to watch to see what the Rose Queen and her court will be wearing. Do we know who is playing in the game? Hell to the no!  It's all about fashion at the Rose Bowl.   This year,  renowned fashion designer and long-time Pasadena resident Tadashi Shoji,  is the official designer for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, creating custom gowns for the Rose Queen and the six members of her Royal Court.  You can see photos of the stylish gowns above, each with a stylish take on the one shoulder grecian goddess look.  Each Rose Princess will be wearing a deep blue, pleated chiffon one-shoulder gown, featuring a delicate crystal design at the shoulder.  The 2012 Rose Queen, Drew Washington, will wear the same gown in winter white, a Royal Court tradition (see photos above.)  “As a Pasadena resident for over 20 years, I hold the Tournament of Roses and Rose Parade very dear to my heart," notes Tadashi Shoji. "I love contributing to my city that holds such great traditions.”

Pictured: Look for this Tadashi Shoji evening looks on the year end sales racks for New Years & beyond.
What's does a savvy shopper like moi know about a high-end and sometimes pricey designer like Tadashi Shoji? Well I own several pieces and I can tell you all are very well made.  I have bought Tadashi Shoji  designs always at deep discounts via shopping clubs like Ideeli and special sales like Divine by Design.  Look for Tadashi Shoji on sale now at Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue on the year end sales.  Some of his designs would make fabulous New Year's looks, don't you think?  The Asymmetric Ruched Cocktail Dress is now on sale at Saks for $95.00.  Compare that to a Kardashian Kollection Sears dress priced on sale at approximately $60.00, and you tell me what the better value is.  For deals on Tadashi Shoji, check out their website sale until Jan. 31st.

Kardashians Kan't Save Sears, K-dashed Khristmas sales

Pictured: A page from an old Sears & Roebuck catalog advertising hats.

Early this year, I reported that American retailer stalwart Sears was in deep trouble.   They were on the list of brands not predicted to survive 2011.  Well, Sears is still in business but according to reliable source CNN Money, "Sears Holdings reported a sharp drop in holiday sales compared to a year ago, and said the results will force it to close 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores."  Despite reselling UK brand FCUK, LA's trendy discount fashion line Forever21and more recently the Krazy Kardashian Kollection, Sears revenues didn't move upward.   I never thought the the 80's inspired Kardashian disco collection would deliver Sears from disappointing profits.  Apparently even Black Friday sales of the Kollection were very low according to MSN Money.  I don't wish Sears any ill will, but seriously, shame on them for thinking that a cheap celebrity labeled line made in China full of items that screamed copyright infringement could fool shoppers.  With the Kardashian Bebe collection already long gone, can the Sears Kardashian Kollection be far behind?   Although it lasted longer than 72 days, I don't think the Kardashian Kollection will be on Sears shelves too much longer.   Despite a heavy advertising campaign, the Kollection is on sale, and I expect it to move to the clearance racks soon.

Pictured: Do you want to dress like these girls? Consumers say no. (image courtesy of Sears)

I'm glad to see American consumers passing on this Krap.   Seriously.   Look to Loehmann's, TJ Maxx, the online shopping clubs, and the after Christmas sales at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Saks, and Macy's to provide better made fashions, and better quality for price.

The RueLaLa Associate Sample Sale for Members is open, featuring free shipping

Online shopping club Ruelala is having a special insider sale today for members only.  I like to think of these after Christmas sales as shopping for the gifts you didn't get :)  The sale is open to members only and features killer shoes (Stuart Weitzman, Joan & David and Taryn Rose), menswear and a deal on a wedding package at Cape Cod's Chatham Bars Inn (in case you are getting married in 2012.) If you are not a RueLaLa member, use my invite here to join.

Note: In the interests of full disclosure, I want you all to know that I earn a small referral fee if you buy something at RueLaLa using my invite. However, I sincerely believe the sales is good value for consumers and wouldn't post here if I didn't.

New Year's Eve Fashions: Lace or Sequins?

Pictured: Quality for Price, Vince Camuto gold sequin top, fully lined, at TJ Maxx (picture: M. Hall)

Are you ready for New Year's Eve? Maybe you're planning a special party at home or going out? Either way, you may be looking for a little wardrobe uplift at a low price.  Two of the biggest trends this holiday season are lace (overlays on dresses and tops) and sequins (on tops, dresses and jackets.) I like both trends for the New Year, and have my eye on several fashionable choices for each depending on your preferences.

Pictured: Armani Exchange Rouched Sequin dress for $150.00

The Recessionista's Picks: Bling in the New Year with Sequins
Vince Camuto Sequined tops at TJ Maxx: This is one of my recommended Maxx finds for the New Year and beyond. You'll have to dig deeply through the racks, but the deals are out there.
Armani Collection Holiday Collection features lots of bling on tops, tuxedo jackets and dresses.
Nordstrom Rack: Love on a Hanger sequin tops for as little as $19.99
Jennifer Lopez for Kohl's: Lots of pretty sequined tops, although check the online reviews.  Several customers commented on the quality of the shirts, and note that sequins are apt to fall off.
365Hangers.com: Lots of sparkling dresses from top designers names in a variety of shapes and sizes, all deeply discounted.
Macy's Impluse: Giambattista Valli sequined T-shirt with Bow design on front, now on sale at all stores.

Pictured: White House Back Market Lace illusion dress

The Recessionista's Picks: Lacey Lines for the New Year

H&M synthetic lace overlay tops and dresses ala trendsetter Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge
Nicole by Nicole Miller for JCPenney.  Satin top with lace sleeves for $35.00
White House Black Market: Many dresses with lace details and overlay, plus tops too.
Max Studio: Lacey tops with nude lining at TJ Maxx and Max Studio online, as well as Macy's and Bloomingdales on sale.
Shop Style and Amazon.com: A variety of lace dresses in one shoulder, strapless and traditional styles. Designers from Milly to Tadashi Shoji have great lace dresses and tops for this holiday season.

What do you think readers?  What is your holiday choice for New Year's dressing?

QVC offers Kenneth Jay Lane's interpretations of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry

Pictured: No it's not the Krupp diamond, it's KLJ's ravishing beauty ring from QVC.com

I can't find any official announcement that QVC and Kenneth Jay Lane have partnered to recreate pieces from Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry collection, but if you check out QVC.com, the proof is there.  Looking through the  KLJ collection tonight online, I found the ravishing beauty ring which resembles the Krupp diamond, the KJL La Peregrina Simulated Pearl Enhancer with Chain, the KJL Pave' Girandole Earrings (similar to a pair Dame Elizabeth owned) and the "If it's Tuesday" tear drop earrings very similar to the Bvlgari emerald earrings Richard Burton gave to Elizabeth Taylor one Tuesday in Rome.  Reading through the product descriptions, there is no mention of Ms. Taylor, however it is noted that with proceeds from the ravishing beauty ring "the manufacturer will donate $5.45 from the sale of each item to amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research."  amFar was well known as Ms. Taylor's foundation to benefit AIDs, so I think we know whose style is being emulated here with this passing node to her charity. The description for the KJL Beloved Pear Shape Ring notes that Andy Warhol once said,  "It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a big ring on Elizabeth Taylor's finger." This pear shaped ring is a homage to one of her engagement rings from Richard Burton, although it's no where near as gorgeous as the original. The "I'm Sorry" Heart Shaped pendant can't compare to the Taj Mahal replica Cartier diamond heart pendant that Burton had made to give to Taylor, or the faithful replica of the Taj diamond that Avon did a few years ago sanctioned by Taylor herself.  But then, again, the QVC price is much cheaper than the Cartier or Avon price.

Pictured: The KLJ Duchess Feather Brooch was part of last year's QVC Royally Chic Collection and is now back in stock.
I haven't seen any of the new KLJ pieces, but I do own the KLJ copy of the Duchess of Windsor's Prince of Wales Diamond Brooch (QVC sent me one as a PR sample.)  The brooch was bought by Elizabeth Taylor from the Duchess of Windsor's estate auction.  QVC had it online last year and it was an immediate sellout.  It is now back in stock for $124.00 US.  I really like this QVC replica piece.  I've seen other copies of this brooch (see Carolee's version) and they are not as faithful or as striking as the QVC reproduction of the original. If you read the online ratings, other QVC customers gave the brooch high ratings for quality.  It's a faithful reproduction of the originals sans actual diamonds of course. Of course, everything in the KLJ La Liz tribute collection is made in China, but we can't all have a gorgeous husband like Richard Burton running out to Bvlgari, Southeby's or private dealers to spend millions on us, know can we?  At least I can't.  Look for more of KLJ on QVC this Wed, Dec. 28th at 5 am to 7 am EST.  By my count there are 18 pieces in the new KLJ for QVC collection that replicate pieces in Elizabeth Taylor's collection. I bet a lot of these pieces sell out.  With the dust still settling on the Christie's auction, QVC is very smart to bring their KLJ collection to market while Ms. Taylor's memory is still vibrant.   The public is still not over their over affair with those amazing violet eyes.

Overstock.com has also put out some Elizabeth Taylor replica jewelry on their site, including a Krupp diamond look a like. However, I think QVC has a better selection of pieces. In addition to the Krupp doppleganger, Overstock has a Taylor Burton diamond replica and a bow brooch from Cano. Meh.

Boxing Day and After Christmas Sales 2011: UK, Canada and US

With  some snow and storms around much of the world, many shoppers couldn't get to the stores pre-Christmas to finish their shopping. Tragedy, eh? Not really. Many retailers are going to keep the sales in full swing until Jan 1st to try to lure those thawing out from winter storms into the stores to buy. Let's see if it works. In the mother country, England, Dec. 26th is Boxing Day, the traditional day that servants and laborers (workers) were given their gifts. It was even a day when charitable contributions might be given. The goal was for the wealthy to give to the less well off. Today Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Greenland, New Zealand and parts of Asia. Interesting how Dec. 26th has evolved to include a wider circle of giving ? :) In Europe and Canada, Boxing Day is like Black Friday in the US, with many stores opening at the crack of dawn and offering specials. Here are a few things that have turned up on The Recessionista radar system.

United States:
  • Stein Mart Red Dot Clearance Event – Customers can find savings of 40-75% off already discounted prices. Check your Christmas day paper for a coupon for an additional 25% off all red dot and clearance merchandise valid only on December 26th and 27th.
  • Macy’s – 75% off designer clothing from Alfani, Nine West, Charter Club, Rafaella, JM Collection, Alfred Dunner, AGB, and Style & Co. Look for the passport savings in today's paper and online.
  • White House Black Market: 50% off winter fashions
  • DKNY.com: free shipping when you use code HOLIDAY plus sale items.
  • Kohl's- savings throughout the store and online
  • Chelsea & Camarillo Premium Outlet Center sales Dec. 26-Jan 3.
  • Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus discounts on select designer wear.
  • Check Loehmann's after holiday savings online and in-store.
  • Nordstrom: Half Yearly sale for men.
  • Reiss Boxing Day Sale 50% off sale.
  • Starbucks: Starbucks End-of-Year Sale: Up to 50% off holiday merchandise
US Shopping Club deals online (sponsored deals)
United Kingdom
Canada.
Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what else you find! I can't find them all, there are just way to many this year.

Sponsored Post: eBay Fashion Vault Year End Blow Out

eBay used to be the place you went to sell of stuff you had worn a few times, or that didn't fit you anymore.  But in the recession, all that is changing.  Now luxury brands sell on the eBay  Fashion Vault at deep discounts.  It's all good for consumers looking for good deals. Today's after Christmas blow sale features Missoni and Versace scarves, VIA SPIGA designer outwear and watches.

Pictured: The Mofra necklace on sale at eBay looks like one Kate Middleton wore.
There's also some jewelry that looks like a few pieces I've seen Kate Middleton  (aka, The Duchess of Cambridge) wear.  Check out the Morfra Designs Inc Cubic Zirconia Necklace, it's very similar to a necklace she was seen wearing around London during her engagement. The eBay price is $32.00 US, the retail price was $135.00 US.  That's over $100 in savings, which I would say qualifies as a good deal!

While you’re checking out the Blowout Sale, enter for your chance to win a NYC Shopping Getaway. You’ll receive an entry when you join the Fashion Vault In Crowd   Good luck and good shopping!

QVC Announces Los Angeles Designers to Create Budget Fashions for Spring 2012

Pictured: The QVC logo at their Oscar Party in Beverly Hills (photo: M. Hall)
A few of my favorite Los Angeles designers have just announced that they are heading to discount shopping channel QVC for spring 2012.  This is good news for fashion lovers around the world, since QVC is an international business. The LA based designers coming to QVC are Geren Lockhart, Rachel Pally, Cynthia Vincent and Karen Zambos.  I regularly buy Rachel Pally and Cynthia Vincent at sample sales in Los Angeles, so I am glad that now everyone will be able to enjoy their great designs for less.  Some of you may remember that Cynthia Vincent's shoe collection for Target was a complete sell out. I'm so excited to see these terrific Los Angeles based talents reach a broader audience via QVC.

Until the new designers join QVC, there is still plenty of fashion on the channel. I love the Marc Bouwer,  Issac Mizrah, the faux fur of Dennis Basso and Luxe by Rachel Zoe holiday fashions.  Sorry, I can't endorse the Joan Rivers or the K family stuff.  But do check out the Jacqueline Kennedy jewelry. I keep hoping that some of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry will come to QVC soon so we can all enjoy it! I wish I knew if they had bought pieces for reproduction at the recent Christie's auction.

Early Christmas Clearance Sales Dec. 23rd: Zara and Nordstrom Rack

Remember when the Christmas clearance sales used to start after Christmas?   Well, now a few retailers are officially jumping the gun and starting early.  That means it's possible for last minute shoppers to possibly get the best deals. ZARA’s semi-annual sale begins this Friday, December 23rd. My spies tell me the sale will feature reductions on fashions from the ZARA Woman, ZARA Basic and TRF collections. For men,  there will be deals on suits, trousers, shoes and jeans, plus leather accessories. The ZARA Kids collections will also be on clearance.  You can shop Zara online, but there may be end of season deals that you'll only find at the brick and mortar stores.

Pictured: Rack clearance starts Dec. 23rd.
Nordstrom Rack already has low prices, but they are saying there will be reductions up to 75% off tomorrow at their stores until Jan. 1.  The Rack has an amazing selection of designers including Vince, Trina Turk, Rebecca Taylor, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and more. They also have inexpensive gifts for under $25.00, $50.00 and even $10.00.   If you're still shopping, you may want to check out Rack tomorrow.
Pictured: My new Kate Spade gold Christmas bow ring found at TJ Maxx for $19.99
For always low prices, visit your TJ Maxx or Marshall's store.  I just picked up great stocking stuffers there and this super cute Kate Spade NY bow ring for only $19.99 (reduced from $68.00).  Most TJ Maxx stores are open until 11:00 pm Dec. 22 & 23rd and until 6 pm on Dec. 24th for Christmas eve.

Good luck with the last minute shopping!

Last Minute Gift Ideas for Christmas

Pictured: My fashionable Christmas Card from TJ Maxx
Are you ready shoppers? This is it, the final Christmas countdown.  There are 3 days left to go. I have to admit it, I'm a little stressed. I made the last priority mail shipping today with final gifts and Christmas cards, but I am not done yet. It's like an obstacle course at this point. I still have a few items to get for folks on my list. If you're struggling like I am, here are a few last minute gift ideas.

iTunes Gift Card. You can't go wrong with the gift of music. The recipient gets to pick their favorite tunes and you get to pick up a convenient and economical gift from the grocery, the drugstore or even online for sending via email. Its easy and a great way to avoid last minute shipping snafus.

Gift Cards. A gift card give you something nice to put under the tree or in a stocking. You can find American Express cards at just about any grocery or drugstore. The nice thing about the Amex card is it is fee free. That means if you paid $50.00 for it, your giftee gets to use $50.00 worth of your gift. There are no service charge fees added in.  Amazon Gift Cards are also readily available at stores or online.  If you give an Amazon card, you are allowing your giftee to select from thousands of great items are hard to beat  prices. Remember, if you have a credit card with a points program (like American Express Membership Rewards, you can cash in points for gifts online and print out the gift card from your PC to include under the tree or in a stocking.) Gift cards to shop H&MTheOutnet.com, Anthropologie, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, White House Black Market, Nordstroms, Gilt Group, Ruelala, HauteLook, Ideeli (see my top picks on the right nav for links) and other retailers also make great gifts. The money on the card will go farther at the after Christmas sales.

A Good Book. The holidays are usually the time I catch up on my reading. It's the perfect time to escape into a good story or a biography. On my reading list this Christmas is Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy.  This is the inside track on life in the White House with JFK.  Oh sure, it's not the whole truth, Jackie was way too PR savvy to tell all, she had to protect the Kennedy legacy.  But there are some great insights here on the mentality of Jackie as a 1960s er , career woman, plus her memories of world leaders.  For more book ideas, check the current New York Time bestseller list .  You can purchase good books anywhere this holiday, from the airport, to Costco, to Target.  You can gift a book and wrap it with a bow or simply gift a book certificate.

Make a Spa Stocking with items from the Drugstore, TJ Maxx or Nordstorm Rack for your favorite guy or gal.  A few suggestions that I like include items like Olay New Thermal Pedicure for women, or body wash for men. Other popular items include Burt's Bees lip balm, shaving lotions and moisturizers. Always look for coupons for Burt's Bees to maximize the savings. Nordstorm's Rack has both Origins and Perricone MD on special. Look for Molton Brown, Elizabeth Arden, and even Estee Lauder sometimes at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Charitable Contributions. It's a great time to make a donation to charity in the name of a loved one. Your gift is also tax deductible.

Affordable Luxury at Sequels Boutique Online and in Beverly Hills

Pictured: Inside the racks of designer deals at Sequels Beverly Hills
A short distance from the high-priced shops on Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard sits a little treasure of a shop: Sequels Boutique. If you live in Southern California, you'll find Sequels Boutique at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Charleville Boulevard, across the street from the Peninsula Hotel.  If you're outside of Southern California, you can check out Sequels online and on 1stDibs.com Owner Billie Jackson has an incredible collection of consignment designer goods and vintage finds.  Some people call consignment goods "pre-owned" but in the case of Sequels, I would call the goods "pre-loved." Most of the items (excepting a few stray pairs of shoes) have been gently worn and are in excellent condition.  Some of the gowns in the store last seen on the Hollywood Red Carpet, and perhaps were worn only once before their owner (or her assistant/stylist) passed them on for resale at Sequels.  If you're a lover of quality designer goods, some of them vintage, made before luxury brands were outsourced to China, then you should check out this store.

Pictured: A Vintage Travilla dress similar to one made by the designer for Marilyn Monroe.
Designers you'll find in stock at Sequels include Mr. Blackwell, Jean Patou, Gucci, Versace, Dior, Chanel, Missoni, Pucci, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and (William)Travilla.  Some of these designers, like Travilla, are no longer in business, so the only place you can find them is a store like Sequels. Of William Travilla, Marilyn Monroe said, "Billy Dear, please dress me forever. I love you, Marilyn."  Looking at the gold lame goddess dress he designed on sale at Sequels, I can totally understand her feelings.

Pictured: My new Chanel bag, purchased at Sequels after an epic quest. (photo: M. Hall)
I stopped into Sequels to shop using the remainder of my American Express Prepaid card funds.  I was determined to stretch the money ($2,000) I was given by American Express as far as I could to get the best value.  At times, I wasn't sure I would be able to find the item I had been lusting after for years: a navy Chanel handbag with the double CCs on the front.  Chanel handbags are obscenely expensive. They range in the thousands of dollars. Even more outrageous, prices for Chanel bags are about to go up in 2012.  It is estimated that Chanel bags will increase between 12% to 20% . With prices in the thousands, than can mean that a purchaser in 2012 will pay say, $500.00 or more over the 2011 prices for some of the bags.  The Chanel boutique at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills this week was full of upscale shoppers, presumably not on a budget shopping plan, buying their Chanel at the 2011 prices.  That's budget shopping Beverly Hills style :)

To my delight,  I found my Chanel bag for about $1,500 (a savings of over 1k) at Sequels. The bag has all the trademarks of genuine Chanel.  This was still a huge splurge, but with Chanel as with most of the designers on sale at Sequels, the value of the item will hold, and I can even resell it later if I want. I'd rather get my Chanel bag than buy 10 things from a Target Go Collection. The bag is an investment piece and a classic. I was glad I didn't blow my budget at the Black Friday sales. Sequels is part of the American Express Small Business Program, and I felt better supporting a small business, rather than a chain store at the mall.  If you're looking for some unique gifts this Christmas, do check out Sequels in store or online.  If you visit the store, you'll get hands-on attention and help from owner Billie Jackson.  You'll find the same luxury brands on sale over on Rodeo for far less. For affordable luxury holiday gifts check out the Burberry scarves, Juicy Couture bags, jewelry, sunglasses and some of the sweaters. There are two Hermes bags in the store right now, no wait list required, but they are not in the budget category, although they are considerably less than Hermes retail prices.

If you check out Sequels in store, or online, leave me a comment, and tell me what you think.

How are you shopping this holiday season? New research confirms that thrift is the new chic

Pictured: A holiday greeting card of the rotunda at Neiman Marcus, San Francisco
If you read this blog, then you are already interested in saving and actively working to maximize your holiday shopping budget and your year round fashion expenses.  Frugal is now for everyone. New market research confirms what I've been talking about for the past 3 years here on the blog: thrift is the new chic and shoppers are budgeting more carefully than ever. WSL/Strategic Retail recently conducted an Internet survey from November 18-25, 2011 on the current shopping mindset for the holiday. The survey included 1,500 respondents recruited from a national online panel. The findings show that consumers are trying to "recession proof their gift lists."

“A tough economy has suppressed shoppers’ holiday spending plans this season,” said Wendy Liebmann, CEO of WSL/Strategic Retail. “In an effort to recession proof their gift lists, shoppers are using up rewards points and gift cards, purchasing a little each week, and resisting the temptation of stores where they tend to overspend.”

Candace Corlett, President of WSL/Strategic Retail continued: “Interestingly, while shoppers are using smart budgeting techniques to buy for others, they are also “self-gifting” particularly in the categories of clothing, electronics and books. Shoppers have creatively managed to save more on others, and are now rewarding themselves and taking advantage of the great holiday sales to buy things for themselves that they had been putting off.”

So how are shoppers reaping the savings? Here's what the report findings show:
  • Resisting temptation.  To manage holiday spending this year, shoppers are resisting the usual temptations, with 35% avoiding stores where they are tempted to overspend, while 23% stick to buying affordable brands, and 18% are making fewer trips to stay out of the stores.
  • Finding new Internet inroads. The Internet is making different kinds of inroads with holiday gift givers bidding for items on eBay or other online auction sites (10%), using smartphones to help them shop (8%), buying deals on discount sites like “LivingSocial” or “Groupon” (7%), or checking for deals on their social networks or mobile device (5%). Check my page on Mobile Shopping for tips. For Spa Deals, be sure to check Spaphile.  For designer clothes, check out Gilt Groupe,  HauteLook, RueLaLa, Ideeli  and 365Hangers.com for holiday giving.   All the invites to shopping clubs are listed on the right side of the blog under The Recessionista's Top Picks.
  •  Using up rewards points.  The power of rewards points is stunning, as nearly 30% are using them to buy gifts this season.  Read my post on how I use my Membership Reward points from American Express and how you can maximize your spending power with points,
  • Tracking spending with gift cards. Shoppers (30%) are purchasing gift cards as a way to limit how much they spend on a gift. I did this when I trialed the American Express Prepaid Card, and found it very helpful  With the text updates, you can keep track as you spend.
  •  Paying-as-they-go. Shoppers (30%) are also practicing a pay-as-you-go method, buying a little each week before December 25th.
There is no doubt that the research shows that a tough economy has suppressed holiday shoppers’ spending mindsets this season. Yet, after a long year of being a smart/frugal shopper and practicing creative budgeting tactics it's no surprise that some of us are also shopping for ourselves.  You know, because we deserve a treat.  Here's what the research shows about " self-gifting."

Self-Gifting (sadly, this is my raison d'être).  While shopping for others this holiday season, 66% plan to buy something for themselves.
  •  For women, the top categories for self purchases include clothing (44%), beauty (25%), books (paper or digital) (23%), and electronics (18%).
  • For men (no surprise), the top categories for self purchases include electronics (34%), clothing (27%), alcoholic beverages (23%) and paper or digital books (17%).

Where you do fall within this study readers? Are you self-gifting, shopping for others, or doing both?

Sponsored Post: Tips to Help Job Hunters Dress on a Budget + a Giveaway from the American Express Millennial Program

Pictured: The White House Black Market Work Kit, stylish & affordable office fashions
One of the most heartbreaking things about this economic downturn, at least to me, is how hard it is for young adults in their 20's to find a job. After paying for an expensive college education, or even graduate degree, many graduates can't find work right away. This means that for this  generation of young people, the new "Baby Boomers" or the Millennials, many are still living at home with Mom and Dad or working at jobs for which they are over qualified.  According to Wikipedia "Economic prospects for the Millennials have worsened due to the late-2000s recession. Several governments have instituted major youth employment schemes out of fear of social unrest due to the dramatically increased rates of youth unemployment."  Witness the recent Occupy Wall Street movement to see signs of this "social unrest."   I think most of us are aware how tough the employment market is today, especially for those who are trying to enter the market without prior work experience on their resume. That's one reason I wanted write about the issues Millennials are facing finding jobs right now. It's hard to be unemployed. You still have to put your "game face" on for interviews and purchase a good suit or dress for a job interview. I've talked to several recruiters who tell me that even though the workplace has changed and more people are dressing casually, job hunters still need a good suit for an interview, or for women, if you don't have a suit, a good professional dress or matching jacket and skirt.

Pictured: A simple, classic Brooks Brother black jacket, on sale for  $98.00, reduced from $325.00.
If you're shopping for a job hunter this Christmas, where can you go to get them an interview outfit to make a good impression? And where can you shop if you want to try to outfit them, say for less than $100.00?  Well, here a few tips.
  • Look for big designer and retail clearance sales this time of year. Then look for a coupon to further bring the price down.  Sites like CouponCabin, CouponMountain and RetailMeNot, can help you save.  The recent Divine by Design sale in Los Angeles featured suits from Brooks Brothers for 80 to 90% off of retail rates. I was next to a twenty-something job hunter filling his cart up with about 5 good suits at Divine by Design. If you're shopping for a guy, check out Overstock.com for deals on suits.  TJ Maxx and Loehmann's also sell suits and separates for work at great discounts.
  • Shop the consignment stores in your area for good deals on suits and good dresses. How do you find them? Check Yelp! for listings in your area. In Los Angeles, I've seen Armani suits at the Beit T'Shuvah Thrift store in Culver City for $100.00 or less.
  • Check out the Brooks Brothers online clearance sale happening now for 70% off. For women, Brooks Brothers has a lot of jackets for less than $100.00 on their clearance, that you can pair with matching slacks or a skirt that you may already have.
  • Shop the White House Black Market "Work Kit Collection."  WHBM has many great looks for the office for under $150, $125 and $100.00.  Check their sale/clearance section for looks less than $75.00.
  • Check the online shopping clubs.  Invitations are posted under The Recessionista's top picks on the right nav bar on the blog.  Right now, Ideeli has a Career Chic sale featuring fashions for work from Ellen Tracy, Calvin Klein and Vivienne Tam. If you're not already a member of Ideeli, click here to sign-up and use my invite to shop the sale.

The site also features Gen Y expert Christine Hassler sharing her best job hunting tips.

Holiday Shopping for the men in your life, it's not always what we want to give

Pictured: Gift for men, from a surprising source, Weight Watchers.
Now begins one of the most challenging tasks on my Christmas shopping list....the gift for the men in my life (the BF, my Dad and my brother). Every year I sigh, I really DID try:). Buying for men presents a singular challenge. There is an essential difference between what I want to give, and what they want to receive. Every year, it presents a conundrum. Here's how this typically works. Secretly, I want to upgrade their wardrobe :) And of course, they want none of it.  Weight Watchers put out a surprisingly accurate gift guide for men last year, and they got it spot on with a selection of tech gadgets, "toys and amusements."

At the holidays, I try to lovingly and sneakily (the two are not mutually exclusive) gift the clothing and fashion accessory upgrades. What dear reader might some of these fabulous items be? Well, I've got a little list.

What I like to Give
Here's a few of my brilliant ideas on gifts for him, that I am passing along as they many also be useful for your own shopping purchases:
  • Fabulous cashmere scarf (Macy's, Amazon, Loehmann's, Nordstorm's & others all have great choices.)
  • Cashmere or Merino Wool Sweater.  Check out the deals at Costco for the cashmere sweaters by Italian designer Enzo Mantovani.
  • A good watch or timepiece.  You can find these at Nordstrom's Rack, TJ Maxx and Macy's. Sometimes men can be a bit absent minded, so I find gifting a watch can be helpful to them and me!
  • Ted Baker shirts and ties.  They brighten up any wardrobe.
  • Good blazer or sports jacket.  Check Loehmann's, TJ Maxx, Brooks Brothers or Nordstrom Rack for good quality items. Online, check out Gilt Groupe for items from leading designers.

What they like to receive
  • A big ass TV to watch sports games, from football, to soccer, baseball to cricket whatever is on is just better on the big screen.  The bigger, the better when it comes to a man's TV.
  • Portable electronic gadgets: a Kindle, iPhone or iPad and their relevant accessories. These are the top toys for boys.
  • Tickets for sporting events or concerts.
  • Restaurant gift certificates.  Restaurants.com and Groupon are particularly good sources for deals. Restaurants serving BBQ, wings, steaks, ribs and burgers are particular favorites.
  • Bottle of wine, scotch or whiskey. A good bottle or wine, or some spirits always seem to be popular and easy to find.
What do you think readers? Did  I miss anything here on the list? Did you shop yet for the guys on your list?  For more gift ideas for all the men in your life, check out Gifts.com.  This site has a lot of great gift ideas, sortable by age and price range. I found it very helpful! Check out the results of a recent market research study below listing what men like to get as Christmas gifts.
